I'm a 50 year old Israeli woman who has been crying on and off since last Saturday and in rage towards my own government at the same time. These 10 minutes lifted my spirits out of the Apocalypse we're in. Hoping for better days and better leaders on both sides. We deserve better leadership.
I hope that at some point in the future Israelis and Palestinians will be able to let history be history (like the Poles/Ukrainians/Lithuanians did). I hope they realize also that it is an imperative for the future of their children. The path which both sides are on only leads to one end: the holy land being a nuclear wasteland (that technology proliferates more and more). That is an end in which no one wins. I hope you all can reconcile someday in the future. Most of the world has the same hope. There is no joy in you all killing each other, endlessly.
Israel stole their land and systematically try to erase them. Like in Gaza they are in the biggest air prison in the world. It is not really surprising that these people that got their land stolen and ethnically cleansed and imprisoned, now desperately look for radical leaders to stop this. Now they bomb Gaza even more. I know it's a complex situation. But if you just look at the land distribution and how their land shrunk and shrunk. Every rational mind knew this will backfire. And the victims are ok both sides. But 10x more on the side of Palestina. It's fucked up. But Israels actions over the last 100 years were creating this madness.
@@SV-nv7jq I lost my home and cried on and on but I had to make a new life in order for my children to forge a new life and future. I didnt want them to spend their lives crying on and on over a home that was taken from me. Terrible for me and I was wronged, but my children needed to forge a new life without my rage and hatred. Its hard for God to place blessings in your hands if your hands are clutching rage and hatred over what someone took from you. If its meant to be restored, it shall be restored in Gods time and in His way.

Most important piece from 7.30. Having a strong leader who builds power by dividing the nation for own political gains may appear tough initially but is the biggest curse for a country.Hope many countries including mine (India) learn from it.
How our leader is dividing the nation? Some would say this exactly is how the leader has divided the nation for power when one subjective opinion like yours is countered, but we know this not division but democracy. Even though he had full majority to build the Ram Mandir he went the Constitutional route not like Netanyahu who wanted to strip supreme court of Israel to save his corruption! Most of the Arabs have built the power by dividing the nation into Sunni and Shia and then driving the Shia out, but they have been successful. Dividing the country also has been done by Erdogan he is successful term after term. Harari is speaking about his own country. Do not extrapolate just because you can.

Its subtle narrative building doesn't have to be in your face like Israel or Arabs, we can be like China slowly but surely brainwashing the entire country. That first step - taking responsibility - is the crucial step to peace and one dodged by many politicians, where they are apt to blame or claim only the victim position. Harari speaks about holding both things together victim and perpetrator. These are lessons for all humanity.
Even if as you say the Palestinians took responsibility, Israel would not dismantle one illegal settlement nor allow for an autonomous Palestinian state nor return to pre 67 borders. Neither would Palestinians be compensated for the loss of land in 48. Taking responsibility yields nothing...thus violence.
So you want to play the 'we were here first' game? Should all the middle eastern states dismantle their countries and give back land to the Jews deposed of it in antiquity? The only mistake Israel made was having Gaza exist at all as an independent entity. Hamas and their followers are barbarians. And anyone claiming 'zionist occupation' in the wake of this tragedy have condoned these actions. You should be ashamed.

If you want to have productive conversation, here are the key questions in front of you: 1) Support for the Oppressed: Are you with the oppressed or with the oppressor? The conversation can only continue if you are in support of the oppressed. 2) Right to Defense: Does a person have the right to defend themselves if they are attacked? (Regardless of which side you support) 3) Equality of Human Lives: Are all human lives equal in your eyes? Are innocent civilians on both sides seen as equal, or is one life valued more than another? 4) Proportionality of the War: Has this war been proportionate, or has it been disproportionate? This one aims to highlight the imbalance in power and suffering in the conflict. 5) Media Fairness: Has the media been fair in their coverage of the conflict? (I personally thinks it's not but curios to hear your thoughts)
All good but I differ on your “proportionality” query. In the law of war, proportionality refers to the force required to achieve the objective. Not a tit-for-tat ratio. So a tactical nuke to take out an operational center would be disproportionate. But the deaths involved in striking a legitimate target using the minimally required force are not. Hamas’ use of “lawfare,” embedding it’s operations underneath an entire region with the aim to maximize casualties creates a hellish new reality. They have potentially turned the entire territory into a legitimate military target. International law has not caught up with this horrific challenge.
What a genuine human being and intellectual you are, Mr. Harari! Humanity needs opinion leaders like you to avoid self destruction. My understanding of the human nature and modern world got much more clear thanks to your book Sapiens, thank you and toda!

Both the communities should understand that and do the necessary to look for peace and inprove themselves.
The Hamas PR guy (rough job) actually gave away the saddest part. They have no intention of coming anywhere near "winning" anything... They're just trying to "fight" because they've completely given up. He said they'll "either win and live in dignity or at least die with dignity." ... It was intentional suicide. But with the intention of dying "in a fight" being seen as having some sort of "honor," regardless of the crimes committed and the violation of Islamic law, and the fact that they're hiding behind civilians they intend to drag them into suicide with them, etc.
hamas fight is not winning fight, the problematic the zionist army keep pushing and random shot people on each year and keep attacking on gaza when ramadhan comes... like if you keep pushing them... im not suprise thats how hamas retaliate.

Like many other places, it has a rich history. What you say is true, but what Harari says is true as well. What matters most is that it is now inhabited by Lithuanian majority within Lithuanian republic. Even though it was once inhabited by Polish majority, trying to make it Polish now by force would be both stupid and atrocious. Unfortunately, a lot of people prefer to ignore presence and future for the sake of history. That's what it was all about.
I agree with Noah. This parallel between Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine which overcame their difficult, often tragic past, could also work for Israel and Palestine.
Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine are a different situation, though. Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine share cultural roots in the vast Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth AND they are predominantly of the same religion. Further, they all suffered under the Soviet yoke, so they were not one another's oppressor.
Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine were never apartheid states committing genocide against the native people of the land they have colonized as Israel has done to the Palestinian people.
Arabs and Jews also share cultural Abrahamic roots. I don’t think each sides pays to much attention to God’s commandments at the moment. There were hundred of years of bad blood between Europeans and we are healing our wounds in peace. So will Arabs and Jews.

If you want to have productive conversation, here are the key questions in front of you:
1) Support for the Oppressed: Are you with the oppressed or with the oppressor? The conversation can only continue if you are in support of the oppressed.
2) Right to Defense: Does a person have the right to defend themselves if they are attacked? (Regardless of which side you support)
3) Equality of Human Lives: Are all human lives equal in your eyes?

I al from Sri Lanka, we suffered a similar war for 30 years just because of the mishaps of the British when they left.
Like in palastine the brits didn't consider the implications of out of the blue policies land and power distribution among ethnic communities.
This jew vs arab problem was created by British.
Both the communities should understand that and do the necessary to look for peace and inprove themselves.
Out of curiosity, what would you have advised British authorities to do differently during the Mandate period to prevent this conflict?
Don’t you people know who this man is???!!!
yeah.. a nazi? the right hand of evil klaus?or the man who wants to transform humanity into machines?
He is a sociopath, a zionist.
He's Klaus Schwab's lap dog talking with a woman who only escaped the rape gangs of Tarhir Square because they mistook her for a menstruating camel.
This is a person without any morals, WEF stooge
The Hamas PR guy (rough job) actually gave away the saddest part. They have no intention of coming anywhere near "winning" anything... They're just trying to "fight" because they've completely given up. He said they'll "either win and live in dignity or at least die with dignity."
... It was intentional suicide. But with the intention of dying "in a fight" being seen as having some sort of "honor," regardless of the crimes committed and the violation of Islamic law, and the fact that they're hiding behind civilians they intend to drag them into suicide with them, etc.
Evil weaves its own tragedy.
@@checkthestachethe interesting part is that your comment’s direction is ambiguous and can be taken as referring to either side, or both.
Dignity for terrorist, how do you remember the 9-11 terrorists, do you celebrate them ?
Harari is Israeli
hamas fight is not winning fight, the problematic the zionist army keep pushing and random shot people on each year and keep attacking on gaza when ramadhan comes... like if you keep pushing them... im not suprise thats how hamas retaliate.
He could just as easily been talking about Gaza. But because he’s Israeli he gets to do this on prime time.
Because he's a genius, not because he's Israeli...
Vilnius, the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Lithuania, after declaring independence from the Russian Empire, claimed the Vilnius Region based on this historical legacy. With all due respect to Poland, Vilnius is Lithuanias'
If you can hold onto it. But judging from the past, I doubt that will happen
Of course, it is. How can this historian make such an ignorant comment.
LOL yeah right ....
Why did Jews leave Europe in the first place? Christianity is so peaceful isn't it !
Arabs and Jews also share cultural Abrahamic roots. I don’t think each sides pays to much attention to God’s commandments at the moment. There were hundred of years of bad blood between Europeans and we are healing our wounds in peace. So will Arabs and Jews.
@@tobehonest7541 Yeah, religions tend to be punitive and authoritarian. You know the idea -- "heretics" killed, "apostates" killed, murderous pogroms, jihads, and other examples of religions' concern for tolerance and humanity.
VERY Well articulated and Balanced view by Dr Harari..just Starting with A simple Sorry something to get to the negotiating table..but Hamaa is very intractavle its ALL their way 100% NO compromise .SAD!
Its really bewildering that Yual Harini is discussing about Natanyahu's politics of diving people of Israel but not coming to the core point of the Freedom of Palestine. Amanpour referred to it and I thought there was going to be discussion on Palestinian self determination and dignity, but alas...they then drifted away. This is what I see in all Israel - Palestinian discussions. People talk about everything - Hamas. Hizbollah, Iran, US and everything else - but they do not talk about the core issue of Palestinian Freedom.
Occupying Palestine does not make a person Palestinian. The original Palestinians were Jews. These are common Arabs from the region, placed there to screw with Israel. There cannot be peace or they would have no reason to stay there. Israel should never again return captured ground to these animals. Send them back to their countries. In plastic bags if necessary.
1. When was the country of Palestine founded and by whom?
2. What were its borders?
3. What was its capitol?
4. What were its major cities?
5. Name one Palestinian leader before Arafat.
6. What was the language of the country of Palestine?
7. What was the religion of the “ancient country of Palestine”?
8. What was the name of its currency?
9. Choose any date in history and tell what was the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian monetary unit against the US Dollar, GB Pound, Japanese Yen or Chinese Yuan on that date.
10. Since there is no country of Palestine now, what caused its demise and when did it occur?
11.Why did the “Palestinians” never try to become independent until after the devastating defeat of invading Arab countries in the Six-Day War?
Note: Anyone able to answer any of the above questions should certainly be commended for their creative and imaginative writing.
“Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas,” Netanyahu told his Likud party’s Knesset members in March 2019. “This is part of our strategy"
Very well said.
One can feel Yuval's sorrow in his tone.
He is hurt. And it hurt watching him today...
Really.
Thoughtful substantive interview. 🙏🏽
Lol!
you can't justify genocide, no matter what!
Indeed, one can be absolutely dumbfounded, repulsed and aghast at atrocities, and at the same time, take a very clear-eyed view of what has led to all of this.
I am afraid that "saying sorry" is an admission of at least some guilt. netanyahu will NEVER do that.
Nor will the Palestinians for that matter.
@@krishnamurtichandrasekhara2187Hamas is not the Palestinians

@@Wayoutthere I don’t think that most Palestinian people who voted for Hamas are extremists. Clearly, Palestinian people are still unhappy about the situation in Israel. And when you’re unhappy you make irrational decisions sometimes. There haven’t been elections since 2006. But you simply cannot keep the Palestinian people in control of a terrorist organization and leave them on their own without still trying to find a solution. It will most likely be considered as a big failure of the Netanyahu government to risk the lives of innocent civilians because you are unwilling to resume negotiations. Many innocent civilians have been killed in Israel’s constant counterattacks whenever Hamas fired a rocket. Terrorism in all forms is evil and it’s infuriating, no matter the scale of the tragedy.
@@texwilson2453 of course, I don’t lack compassion I possess an ability to be realistic. All lives lost is tragic. Unfortunately, evil in the world is irrational, it’s cold and cruel. Havin an emotional “pollyanna” perspective doesn’t solve anything, it doesn’t help anyone. This is not simply a land dispute, despite the narrative. The Israeli’s didn’t provoke the current conflict-Hamas caught Israel sleeping and they took full advantage of it, indiscriminately invoking a campaign of terror, not against the military, rather on innocent families in a way that was as brutal and barbaric as possible--these are the facts of the matter and it must be dealt with. Unlike Hamas the IRE goes out of its way to target the terrorists as much as possible. Unfortunately, collateral damage happens in result.

Gaza elected hamas as their government. So what is about to happen to them kinda requires them to look into a mirror when finding the culprit to their misery
Stop the settlements, land grab, stop west interfering in isreal. You will see muslims and jews live peacefully together. They have more than a thousand years of history. Unlike Europe and America that has always hated jews. They still do

He is supposed to be an advanced vipassana meditator. As one myself, I'm shocked at this man's inability to see the situtation for what it is. Totally caught up in his own sectarianism and so clouded in his vision that he can't perceive that this is a direct consequence of Israeli brutality and heartbreaking violations in gaza. The fact that he spends 30 days a year meditating in silence so he can purify his mind of defilements to emerge more compassionate and clear thinking is not very inspriing considering what he's spouting these days.
Very informative interview. Really important things he has to say.

This invariably happens everywhere : when you don’t want to negotiate a real solution with the moderates, then you encourage the extremists.
Negotiations with normal humans do work but not with a particular community that has been infected by a perverted cult leader and his book. They are sort of brain-dead zombies to such an extent that their sole motive is annihilation of non-believers through any excuse & opportunity.
The only way to deal with these perverted monsters is to never ever lift your boots from their neck.
