The original owner of the museum was a pilot and we have a few cases of shell piston engine oil. You can use any oil that you would put in an automobile. It's all better then the stuff they had 100 years ago. Andrew from blacksmith tools on Instagram introduced me to a gentleman who is an expert on hit and miss. I learned more in one day than I have in the past year! He told me that these engines are far from precise and never were. The tolerances are much greater when compared to a modern engine. Cant wait for November!
Awesome! I've been using non-detergent 30w oil for all my old engines. I'm not sure it makes a large difference, but it has been recommended to me several times for use on the antique engines.
I am glad that you include some easier restoration videos. It reminds us that we can all find something that needs a little love and bring it back to life again.
It does my heart good seeing you keeping this stuff alive. The days of user serviceable items is almost gone. Its hard to get the newer generations to understand how much more environmentally friendly, not to mention cheaper in the long run, it is to buy parts that can be serviced and rebuilt. Yes, it takes a little time and effort, but it is sooooo much more worth it in my eyes. Thanks for another great video.
I have a suggestion for you that was told to me by an old pre-ww2 aircraft fitter. Take lead (I used old lead weights from tire shops) and melt them in a large tin can. Pour the molten lead into an old, unused frying pan (or similar container) and let it harden. Then dump the 1/2inch thick (or more) out and use it to use as a backing for you hole cutters or other such cutting, punching, seating jobs. Its soft, so absorbs any shock and can be resurfaced by simply heating it up. Works a treat.
C'mon, am I the only one who half expected Justin to say "Release the Shmoo!" when he dumped the old oil? Great job, can't wait to see more of those old engines chugging away.
man one of the channels i want to watch every video of and keep tabs on and youtube shoved it away and wasnt giving me any notifacations despite me having the bell on.
Gorgeous oiler there. Have just found an old 'carding machine' used for carding or teasing out fibres like wool, horse tails, flax etc. in order to prepare it for making string or rope... This will be my project after Easter next year...Hope to be allowed to show some pictures of it during and after restoration to working order as it will be on display at the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum here in Queensland Australia. Only have the courage to accept this project because of the inspiration of your restoration videos. Will try to reach teh heights of quality and care that you show us every time...
I bought a box of "junk" at a barn sale. There were 2 of these in the box. One of them someone replaced the broken glass with a section of an old soda bottle. I wish there was a way to share a photo of it. It's pretty cool.
I was looking for some small oilers at the last flea market I went to. I want to mount on my lathe. There were plenty of the around but they were very expensive. Nice job as always.
What an awesome oiler . I was wondering what that wire loop thing was, that was hanging down inside the glass bowl. Then when you added the new oil, duh ! wont be looking for that cap in the future. That oiler was made to last indeed. Great video, I enjoyed watching as usual, and look forward to the next one, thanks for sharing...ken
Great rebuild/restoration. FYI; If you can't find proper gaskets, the first gaskets were made from leather. Yes, it's true that modern gasket material is so much easier to work with. But, in a pinch...
Justin: I just rescued a Novo Vertical hit & miss out of a barn. Can you do a walk around video of the one in the museum collection ? It would help me out.
Well that scrubbed up nicely there Justin....I've got a stash of old oilers & greasers myself... If you do any more of these though please wear some disposable gloves won't you....as old oil can be carcinogenic...😉
@@TheGoodoftheLand They are nice ! I use micro fine glass beads in my cabinet and they work sweet for carbs or clock, gun, tool, fishing reels or any parts you want to clean off rust or oxidation or discoloration without damaging the surface material. You can pick up a good used ultrasonic on eBay from time to time I have a couple L&R ones and all I can say they are the best.😁
It came back to life beautifully. How soft is that wire wheel that allows you to put you finger against it? Instagram? Didn’t know you were on it. Only see your link for FB listed in the dooblee-doo.
So satisfying to see a restoration like that. This event in November is it open to the public or is it just for UA-cam? I would like to fly over from the U.K. to come see your farm in person but obviously I wouldn’t if it wasn’t open to the public. ( just turn up uninvited 😂 )
+mavos1211 Its open to the public and kids get in free. The date is nov17 st the Old Mill Pond Museum In Lindale TX. We will have more info on visitlindale.com in a few days.
Wow, nice thick glass on that, they don't make them like that anymore! (at least most don't) Cleaned up right nice! Ain't old user-serviceable stuff great? Actually made to be serviced!
Beautiful! What oil did you use?

The Good of the Land Nice restoration. You should pu gloves though. Some oils of that period where not cancerproof.

Love to see old equipment and tools brought back to life .... they were built to last if taken care of.
😮what a beautiful oiler
CRC is awesome for helping the Mill. Keep that old stuff looking and running like new
Another quality product brought back to life. Thanks for bringing us on the journey

Love to see the old machines put back to work, other wise they become dust catchers and refuse for our landfills, lost and forgotten.
Awesome. Job I did 2 a couple years ago that really turned. Out nice more videos
Well done!! Good job!!

Nice job on the oiler. Looks great. Hint on gasket punching, punch on the end grain of a wood block, much cleaner and better gasket.
Thank you! Great tip!
That, Randy, or I use a piece of UHMW. It makes a really clean cut. Great job on the restoration!!
Great video Justin
Looks so beautifull

The comment is not loaded semantically, but only supports the video and the author of the channel.
love this stuff.
That’s gorgeous. Hoping we can make it out there in Nov.
I am planning on attending the fest, it will be great fun.
VERY COOL!!!!
Thanks Marla! November 17.........
It looks great! You do so many fascinating things. I particularly liked you checking the gaskets and making the new one. (hi from us, as well!)
Awesome
Arm and Hammer Complete Toothpaste works very well cleaning brass. Not too abrasive.
Nice!
Good job Justin the next time you punch out a gasket try using the end grain if the wood you will like the results
Thanks Roger! Great tip!

Oh, a "complete loss oiler." Nice!
I wish I lived just a bit closer. I'd donate my time just so I could get my hands dirty working on those old machines.

More likely to give you dermatitis. Voice of experience. :-( Yep, wear gloves, or at least use a barrier cream.
ASMR for mechanics... cool to watch sometimes without hearing any speech.
You need an ultrasonic cleaner and a bead blasting cabinet makes life a whole lot easier.😁

If you left all them brass parts soaking in white vinegar over night they would of came out beyond shiny and clean!

I might be missing information but where are you located as far as state?
Was that a Real McCoy?
That oiler sure was dirty as heck! When was it last cleaned or do you even know?
Thumbs up
Enjoyed!!
My guess, twenty years.
Impressive work on your part, however I could have done the same work using just one hand. :)
Is there a web page I can go to so I can check out The Good of the Land Fest?

This is not an oiler. It is a bourbon dispenser hiding out for the mechanic.
