20 New PROG Album Recommendations! (2024 Q3 Round-Up!)
I have already pre-ordered The Lamb box set. My favourite Genesis album!
Marillion's This Strange Engine media box set just came out also
Everyone is excited about Opeth (with good reason) but both the Kyros and Stop.Drop.Rewind releases are great hope this gets some folks listening!
Nospūn have announced a new EP.
Cant wait, their debut was insanely good.
Hi Nathan Some great things coming out. Hope my Opeth box set arrives next week (Ian Anderson on it ) Have a great weekend
Thanks Nathan!👍😎
The YES albums are masterpieces to me. Just amazing.
Kansas yes!!! Nice to see a young man into prog 👊
Yes, Falling Into Infinity is so good! One of my favorites. I would pick Dream Theater's strongest five album run as Awake - Train of Thought, because the production quality got a lot better after Images & Words. And James' singing as well, he has some wailing high notes on I&W which I'm not fond of. Transatlantic, Haken, Frost* and Porcupine Tree would make up the rest of my top five. (I'm not sure about the order).
My #1 would be King Crimson, and as a run of 5 has to include Larks, Starless and Red, I would extend that to include Discipline and Beat, but I think they have a solid run all the way up to their last studio album of Power To Believe. My #2 would be Riverside. I think all their albums are amazing so that's a run of 8. My #3 would be Porcupine Tree. For a run of 5 I'd go Stupid Dream to Fear of a Blank Planet, but I could extend that to 8 with Signify to Closure/Continuation, or even to 11 with all of their albums. My #4 would Gentle Giant from Acquiring the Taste to Freehand for 6. My #5 would be the first 5 albums from Camel. Just missing out would be Pink Floyd with Meddle to Animals, Genesis from Nursery Crimes to Trick of the Tail and Rush from 2112 to Moving Pictures. Though Yes have some fantastic albums, they do not have a solid run of 5 for me. I did not include fusion, but if I did it may mix things up, but a lot of my favourite fusion bands/artists don't have a solid run of 5.
Can't argue with with your top 5. If you had 6-13 I think you'd agree wiith King Crimson, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Moody Blues, and Supertramp (IMO they're proggy enough) PFM, Camel, Strawbs
How about Acquiring the Taste, Three Friends, Octopus, In a Glass House, The Power and the Glory, Free Hand and Interview? Oh wait, that's seven!
Genesis went downhill after Trespass !
Interesting take! Obviously I don’t feel the same but cool to see the love for Trespass!
Are you joking?
He is joking. They didn't really hit their stride until Calling All Stations.
@@daneng3641 Well, the reason I ask is that there are, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, people who think Yes lost "something" when Steve Howe came on board. And, as for me, I think Genesis would probably have been just as good as we know them to have become, if Ant had stayed, anyway. Hackett's role is over rated by almost everybody.
@@coltonbeatty6117 Include me in almost everybody.
Not even honorable mention for Gentle Giant? Suprisingly. First seven albums are bloody masterpieces.
Definitely a big oversight as I’m a massive Gentle Giant fan…I would probably have said Three Friends to Free Hand…but I love them all ❤️
First eight.
Gentle Giant loses "something" after Three Friends.
@@coltonbeatty6117 yes, I agree, especially production-wise
‘YES’. 👍🏼 🎶❤️🎶
Too sporadic !
That's a good list! Off the top of my head, I think my top 5 is 1. The Dear Hunter: Act 1 -> Act 5 2. Coheed and Cambria: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 -> The Afterman (counting this double album as one) 3. Dream Theater: Scenes From a Memory -> Systematic Chaos (though it hurts to leave Awake out) 4. Alcest: Les voyages de l'ame -> Les Chants de l'Aurore 5. Steven Wilson: Insurgentes -> To The Bone Honorable mentions: Genesis: Nursery Cryme -> A Trick of the Tail Porcupine Tree: Stupid Dream -> Fear of a Blank Planet Opeth: This one is hard to cut. But I think (and a lot of hardcore Opeth fans would probably disown me for this) I'd have to go Watershed -> In Cauda Venenum. I love Oldpeth. I just like Newpeth a little more.
Excellent list! Love all of those choices!
@@NosyEyeMusic Dear Hunter has migrant and color spectrum in the middle of acts. But still pretty solid run.
@@gabrielmekler4757 You're completely right, I forgot those. In that case I would go Color Spectrum -> Act 5
Terrible for Opeth and for cutting out Alcest's best album
@@YannickTMessiah Well, as of today, Opeth probably goes Heritage -> The Last Will And Testament for me, because so far I like TLWaT better than Watershed. :P
I saw these guys on TV back in '72 or '73 and was amazed at this song. I went out the very next day and bought "Moving Waves", the album this was from. Ended up buying many more of their albums through the years and fell in love with all of their jazzy and classical-inspired and softer prog stuff, too. They were all tremendously talented. Thanks for the reaction to the studio version - check out the 6:00 version of it live from "Midnight Special" TV (there is a 4:00 version, but hold out for the full one!) You'll love it.
Being a huge Tull fan I think they had a run of 13.Nektar from Journey to the Center of the Eye to Recycled.Gentle Giant first 5 albums
Difficult to argue with the top two. I would include Moon Safari - no surprise there 😂
Should have mentioned them!
Kite parade are at 3 can they go for 5. Iq from subterranea onwards
Uriah Heep, their first five Albums are incredible. My favorite: Salisbury and Look at yourself
Heep rules got to see them 4 times with Byron and Hensley feel very fortunate
You missed the incredible 5 album run from Pain of Salvation. From "Entropia" to "Be".
I don’t consider that good 5 run I love pain of salvation I’m not fan of anything before be except perfect element
Good call!
Kansas: their first SIX(Monolith too) albums(seven if you count the live album Two For The Show) RIP Robby Steinhardt 🎻
You're doing great work, good sir!
Thank you!
The moment when Phil hits those drums gets me every time. Even after 40 years of listening.
Loved this song, bought it on a "7 single. So atmospheric and uplifting, with Annie's excellent vocal and the arrangements. Brings back such happy memories. Especially love the false ending with the drums kicking back in.
Great ranking list! Mine would be very similar, but so many albums would fluctuate depending on the day and how recently I've listened to the album. Loved your comments on everything and agree wholeheartedly! Thank you for introducing me to such an amazing artist!!!
You’re welcome!!! So glad that you’ve been able to find as much joy from his music as I have! 😀
AFTER MY 6TH PLAY , THIS WILL BE MY ALBUM OF THE YEAR, THE STAR ON THE ALBUM IS CHRIS RILEY , I WAS THINKING HIS VOCALS REMINDED ME OF THE VOCALS FROM MOON SAFARI ( MY ALBUM OF THE YEAR FROM 2023) THE TITLE SONG IS MY SONG OF THE YEAR ❤
Renaissance are forever being left out of prog rock discussions, history, etc etc. DAMMIT! Northern Lights is a great song (from a great album), but if you want the real prog vibe you need to go earlier. Try "Black Flame". But not if you're feeling low...
Ah ha- takes me back. Still have the album and also a solo album of Annie's.
What is the best month to see the northern lights? Best months to see them. The best months to see the northern lights are September, October, March and April (not in any particular order).
if you ever thought a giutar wouldn’t make you cry, this song surely does
I looooove Renaissance. Since 1976. The Earth moves for me too every time I hear them. BTW, there are lots of west coasters that are regulars on CttE. Mostly from the Bay area.
Seems a bit bizarre how a great single when I was a 12 year old chart music lover is featured on your great channel Nathan. I can see it spinning on my uncle's gramophone deck now , and remember it on TOTP !!! What memories ! Fantastic , those spine chilling vocals from Annie Haslam really takes me back. 😍🎵🎵🤘
hola desde Argentina, creo que estamos en presencia de uno de los mejores trabajos del progresivo del milenio, es simplemente espectacular!!!
THanks,guys...more Renaissance please.. :-) T
Where go you live? I was just wondering what state/city the earthquake happened.
We live in Southern California, about an hour east of L.A.!
This is really a pop song by a prog band, very similar to Yes' "Wonderous Stories". BTW, the other reason you'll never have a Prog Cruise to Alaska is that it would have to depart from the west coast, and as we all know they are no prog fans on the west coast. They're too busy hiding under tables during earthquakes. 😉
Ha! Good point about the west coast!
Great earthshaking review! Here is a second version of the song from the vaults that is even more poppy... ua-cam.com/video/7W9V6Jm1nkk/v-deo.html
Annie Haslam singing?! Yes please.
As far as singles are concerned, Renaissance were a one hit wonder with this track being their only UK hit reaching number 10. It is far from their best track though. The albums didn't fare much better in the UK charts with A Song For All Seasons reaching number 35 (and Renaissance and Azure D'Or being the only others to reach the lower reaches of the chart for one week). Surprising considering how good their run of albums in the 1970s are.
True, but they also did *just well enough* to sustain a contract with their label that allowed them to record and tour. Sort of like Gentle Giant. As Steve Howe once said, "Bravo the 70's". 👍
Hi Shufflers. Dave from The Smoke here. Like James Bond's favourite Martini cocktail, you were shaken but not stirred! A lovely melodic love song from one of my all-time favourite bands. The only hit they had in the UK, but it boosted their album sales at the time. I also like their follow-up single The Winter Tree - quite similar in style.
My first time hearing the song too. I really ought to check out more Renaissance. That was simply lovely.
Annie Haslam is the best female artist in Rock music that I've ever heard. Her tone is perfection.
Music that shakes your world.
You presented this really well, it was very interesting to hear you talk about Neal's music. I would also place Jesus Christ the Exercist last for the exact same reasons, and I was also glad that the Joseph albums are more proggy and, well, musically interesting. I'd place The Restoration way higher though. My number #1 album is Innocence & Danger though, which is quite different from your ranking. And my number #2 would be The Great Adventure, which I think is way better than Similitude (I know I'm alone in thinking this). Two near perfect albums in a row (2019 & 2021) and they're so recent, but I really think they're the best of his catalogue... barring Transatlantic's stuff maybe, but that's not included here anyway.
What I like about Beardfish is that they don't take themselves too seriously.
Why are Beardfish not more well known?
Hey Nathan! Thanks for another awesome episode. I agree with the comment about Wakeman. Great interview, actually i sent it to Scot. Can't go wrong with Rick and Rick!!!👍🎹🎹🎹😎
The Rick Wakeman video is excellent. So many interesting stories.
A really good interview.
Agree! Rick is awesome!!!👍🎹😎
