Thanks a lot for yet another brlliant video! I cannot imagine how much it would have meant to me, had I had access to information on this level, when I turned my back on the Jehovah´s Witnesses, more than 40 years ago, aged 14.
It is probably impossible for those brought up in secular and non-fundamentalist environments to fully grasp how it feels to be within a fundamentalist setting (be it officially religious or ideolgical - if it´s extreme enough it´s really religious in nature), and what it takes to fully break free.
Many of my apostate contemporaries broke down under pressure and either returned to live as covert hipocrites or were crushed by shunning-policies and/or the installed fear, ending up as broken human beings.
Normally I doubt everything and have done so since leaving the sect. But I have NO doubt, that you are saving lives!

Ever since that time, Islamic and Roman Catholic terrorists have been trying desperately to commit genocide against the Jews and steal their land. Yest, despite outnumbering the Jews 6-to-1, they have never defeated Israel in any war they've ever started. Why not? One of the questions gave me pause: what creation myth do you value the most? I haven't thought about that in years, but it would definitely be the cult of Ptah, who created the universe by speaking it into existence. I also like that Ptah is not depicted as an angry god; his form is rather pleasing, and he tends to value knowledge above all else. Not like Odin, Zeus, or Yahveh at all. I could see his worship being revived to some extent in the present century. If we have to have a god, Ptah would be a good candidate.

In response to the question at 1:30:15 about zodiacs in synagogues: I have thought about this, and I think that it is meaningful that synagogue is a Greek word, meaning to speak together, and that throughout the new testament, it makes distinctions between synagogues as such and Jewish synagogues. I think that a first century synagogue was a kind of conventionally Hellenistic town hall meeting place that many communities had, and some of them were Jewish, while some were not. By the first century, Judaism had been imposed upon the local people of northern Israel for less than a century, and so the population there were coerced into being Jewish and would have a very blended, synchronistic, cosmopolitan culture. Like, if it was totally Jewish, why was there a herd of swine around for Matthew 8:28-34, and archaeology shows that swine did exist there as a staple at the time. So, the Northern Israel area was probably not as totally Jewish as we suppose. Would love to learn more if anyone can add to this or correct me. Thanks!

I concur, these belief systems have been used as taproots for the new age and all together are used to justify all manners of imbecility and anti-human, ascetical behavior. That they haven't undergone as profound an attack as Christian fundamentalism has in the US and in Britain is a sign of partiality and a vulnerability.

Buddhism was particularly deadly in Japan during the War, with all major sects fully endorsing it and even providing seas of ink justifying it. Buddhist monks trained soldiers so they’d be more effective in battle and temples did fundraising activities to buy war material, including planes.
The Chinese front, in particular, was heavily promoted with batshit notions of “purging” China from “impure” Buddhism.
“Zen at War” covers the whole thing and it is truly chilling.

It'd be an interesting topic to dive into. But I doubt Derek is going to. Certainly not anytime soon.
His experience is with christianity and the fundamentalism that emerges as a result of it within a US context. He deals with judaism and ancient Greco Roman beliefs because they inform christianity. He even deals with islam infrequently because these are related belief systems and there is growing overlap in how they interact. His scientology stuff seems to mostly exist because he has a friend who relates to it.
Buddhism and hinduism are basically non concerns in the US. While I'm fairly skeptical of so called "philosophical buddhism", it's even less of a problem relative to other things. We're talking about maybe a hundred thousand people in the US practicing these things. In a country of over 350 million. It'd be a big shift for the channel as well as a massive learning experience for Derek, all for something that affects a teeny tiny fraction of the audience. There are almost certainly many people subscribed to this channel who don't know any practicing hindus and some who may never even meet one in their lives.
If someone feels like this is a subject that needs more eyeballs and that they have some experience with it in order to lend credibility to their criticisms, then they should start a channel and start talking about it. I'd be interested in hearing from such a person. But I don't think it's reasonable to ask this of MythVision. I don't know if you've noticed, but Derek is already pretty busy as is.

Hi Jill.. that is a great question. Like the traditional philosophers, the Christian martyrs faced death without fear (at least to some extent) due to their various beliefs that they would survive death. This tradition extended back to Socrates’ confident/noble death. Ignatius in some of his writings did express confidence that he would survive death.
Here is what Socrates’s disciple (Plato) wrote of him:
Socrates concludes that the soul of the virtuous man is immortal, and the course of its passing into the underworld is determined by the way he lived his life. The philosopher, and indeed any man similarly virtuous, in neither fearing death, nor cherishing corporeal life as something idyllic, but by loving truth and wisdom, his soul will be eternally unperturbed after the death of the body, and the afterlife will be full of goodness... Socrates grows aware of their doubt and assures his interlocutors that he does indeed believe in the soul's immortality, regardless of whether or not he has succeeded in showing it as yet. For this reason, he is not upset facing death and assures them that they ought to express their concerns regarding the arguments... Socrates pauses, and asks Cebes to voice his objection as well. He says, "I am ready to admit that the existence of the soul before entering into the bodily form has been ... proven; but the existence of the soul after death is in my judgment unproven.”

For the record the Bible is the most studied, the most sold, the most influential book in history. If there are any fantasies in the world its atheism which denies reality. Wish Derek and his atheist friends would do a deep dive into atheism and its implications. That would be an eye opener for so many people.

    • @TheDanEdwards
      @TheDanEdwards Рік тому +4

The obvious is obvious: Derek was a Christian so his channel is about his adventure leaving Christianity, and the result of that is highlighting a great many scholars who illustrate how fundamentalist (and all orthodoxies) misunderstand the ancient literature. If you are interested in philosophical discussions of atheism there are plenty of channels that do that.
"... deep dive into atheism and its implications" - I'll tell you one implication: atheists who have worked their way out of religions are less likely to be caught up into end-times religious cults. Tell me, how many people recently starved themselves (or were murdered) in Kenya in a Christian group who thought they were doing what Jesus wanted? Maybe it's you who needs to explore the implications of your own blood-cult.

Still not worried by time secular historic clups that forgotten ”We will take a simple little verse and show you why it is not addressed to the natural man, Ecclesiastes 3:15: “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.” The “natural man” cannot grasp that, for to him reality is based only on the evidence of the senses. The man of reason could justify the verse’s end, saying if it has any meaning then the writer must mean recurrence. The sun comes every day and the moon completes its cycle and the seasons come and go. If we took a picture of the universe today, the scientists can compute how long it will take to return to this point in the picture. So the intellectual man could justify the verse; but that is not what is meant, for it is addressed not to the man of reason or the man of sense, but to the man of Imagination. What is it all about? “That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been, and God seeks what has been driven away.” (still can't cure your time only truth limitations your good farmers till timless challenged with Imagination a weak one your imagine thinks )

The Bible is unlike any book. It’s inspired by God’s Holy Spirit, therefore it requires God’s Holy Spirit to understand. Without this prime element you have this type of driveled, incoherent commentary! Proclaiming yourself to be wise, you expose yourself as a fool(Romans 1:22) albeit somewhat amusing.
