This was great! I bought my wife a S&W Governor (basically the same as the Taurus Judge, but with a built in laser sight) to keep in her night stand. We have shot a few different rounds down at the range to give her an idea of the difference. Knowing she wouldn’t be very good at reloading it and I agonized over the combination of the very ammunition you demonstrated. I would love for her to take a greater interest in her own security, but she seems to want to rely more on the alarm system and our dogs. For now the Governor is the best I can get her to do. Just a thought: I watch a lot of your videos, and am always impressed by your marksmanship and that great range you have. The focal length/zoom setting of the lens that John used for the close-in shooting makes things appear a LOT closer; at 3 yards, it looked like you were 3 feet from the target. It would be informative, I think, if there were distance markers for reference - the gong, the pig, ram, cowboy, tree, etc. so that we'd have a sense - particularly for something like this - of how to translate what we see on the screen to what we'd see in front of us, get a better feel for the drop that we can see when John zooms in on the hill and gong, etc. Just a thought, from a long-time fan. Perfectly 'scientific' hickok45! I've had my Judge for a while now and I personally love the versatility of it. I mainly use it as a 'woods walk anti-serpent' gun. Great for clearing out old deer or duck blinds/stands. With the specifically designed 'personnel defense' rounds I wouldn't hesitate to use it for that purpose either.
Hey I love your channel, im in the UK and we donot have the chance to own and shoot like yourself but still love to watch your videos. Came across this video while looking through them, and think a hand shotgun is very cool, great idea, did not know this even was made :)
Man I love me some Classic Hickok45! "I'd like to be able to say that doesn't happen often around here...but I can't say that" Lmao! We need some more zombie stuff Hickok! We need a throwback to the good ol zombie days! Also, I really like this technique of patterning and real world simple testing, I did then and still do now! As always, thanks for all you and John do!
I've got a 3"Taurus Raging Judge Magunum (shoots .454 and 3in. .410) and I must say, using the 3". Winchester PDX1 this gun is incredibly lethal. From 5 yards the 4 discs grouped within a 4" diameter. That's 4 .45 sized pieces of lead going right into you. Then, over half of the plated BB's landed on the approximately an 16". diameter target I was firing at. That means at 5 yards (larger than my entire apartment lol) you have a 2in. margin for error with the more lethal round, and an 8". margin for error if not MORE for landing a hit in general. That's a HUGE tolerance. I have no doubt that the 4 discs would be lethal and I know that I would NOT want to be shot by the BB's either. I Live in an efficiency apartment and I would certainly rely on this gun for my own defense. I would even rely on it when I eventually get a house, as there will be very few instances when I would be farther than 7 yards. This also doesn't take into account I can load my own .45s for the range or .454 in case I was ever attacked by a bear or a tank. Overall, I would highly recommend this weapon.
My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't shoot anything less than 00 buck through this gun. I was very impressed with the 000 buck and the PDX1 grouping. I might have to take a closer look at this little gun.
Thats one of the ones I want! Thats a badass gun, versatile for every situation.:) However I also want the Judge Magnum that can shoot .45LC, and 3" .410, but also has a seven round chambedr
It's always fun to watch an honest man like this. He's correct with all the facts he shares with us,puts in a little humor when he can. I truly enjoy watching his work. He seems to enjoy what he's doing. THANK YOU very much. i
I was always wandering about the .410 for home defense, and after watching this video I would definitely use this gun for it, loaded with some good ammo...thanks
Came here to post this. On a side note, I'm really surprised he actually hit the gong with it fairly consistently. I have one, and .45 LC isn't near as accurate for me, but I have the shorter barreled "Public Defender" (and I'm a worse shot...)
Lots of combinations are being packed into .410 casings including 0000 ,000, & 00 Buck all the way down to #6, 1" Flechette darts, 168 grain hollow-point slug, Bolo ammo, Dragon's Breath, and a really wide (and wild) variety of some accurate Sabot slugs. But my favorite is the Hornaday Triple Defense round. It is topped off with a 110 grain HP, followed up by two 65 grain balls, with a muzzle velocity of 745fps, or what a 45LC produces. Coinidence? The Judge also fires 45LC's with a similar weight of 245 grains and 745 fps velocity. You can also start off with a couple of rubber pellets followed up with some lethal buck if he doesn't get the message. Not my choice in a HD.
Shot a 6" model yesterday and was really impressed by the groupings. Even at 15 yards, all four pellets were on a paper plate. Amazingly, one or two usually hit the 10 ring. Really neat gun, might have to pick one up.
I have decided after some serious thought, that Mr Hickok is such an exemplary role model to all of us fans in the Gun community, role models being so important in our lives I have come to the conclusion he should be the new Dr Who!.
GuitarZombie it is "scientifically" testing the spread over distance of the different ammo's. that however is not telling the effectiveness of the round on a body.
I tend to think that many reviewers and shooters in general are looking at "The Judge" with the wrong perspective. Anyone buying one of these to replace their Glock, Colt or whatever state of the art defense gun will be disappointed. IMHO the beauty of the Judge as a short range/domestic defense weapon is the very thing so many seem to dislike about it, the lack of 1 shot lethal power with some or all .410 shells. I see this as the BIG plus for the Judge. Not all situations call for or warrant LETHAL/DEADLY force. I am not too sure I really want to kill someone for taking my TV, laptop or stealing my lawnmower.... This isn't some TV show. Killing another human being is not to be taken lightly and will probably give you some unhappy memories. Even Police often end up in therapy after justifiably taking a life. The Judge can be an excellent DETERRENT. For all the comments about penetrating ONLY 2.5-4 inches (or anything less than 12") I feel confident in saying that I cannot envision anyone taking a load of #5, #6 or #7 BIRD shot on their bodies much less exposed body parts/face without some serious consequence (aka PAIN) or immediate urge to run away. The Judge gives us that option with the secondary option of having a full bore .45 Long Colt round just 1 or 2 trigger pulls away... Remove the threat with a measured & justifiable response AND also you don't kill your neighbors with bullets flying through that nice thin drywall ! Some older folks may remember that shotgun loads of rock salt were sometimes used in the past. OUCH! Maybe 1st shot #4 or #5 birdshot, 2nd shot #4 or larger buckshot and remaining chambers defense load .45LC. Defense when possible. Kill ONLY if necessary. Just my .02 cents. T.
Actually, if someone breaks into my home and I have to shoot him, I would prefer to kill him because he knows where I live. If I shoot him and he lives, he may want revenge on me.
Well, you started off so good, then got SO stupid - and I don't mean to be offensive... If you point a handgun at anything smaller than an elephant, you'd BETTER assume it may kill him... If you DON'T intend to kill, use a slingshot and rotten eggs...
You're opening yourself up to severe civil and criminal legal trouble using less-lethal force in a justified-shooting situation, not to mention you're putting your life on the line. If you really think any of what you said is safe, real world or advised by the law, firearms for defense just isn't for you buddy. Maybe these comments will enlighten you a bit, I hope they do, but you're just so wrong it's a danger to yourself. Look into it a bit online, speak with a lawyer, local PD, shooting instructor, anyone.
Im a Desert Storm Veteran that recently purchased the Governor and wanted to know which defensive ammo to use, this video was extremely intuitive and helped me to figure out which ammo to buy and try in my weapon for my needs
Home defense is close range. 00 buck in that thing will do the trick but if an intruder grabs one of your kids you'll wish you had a single slug in the chamber to place the shot.
Another great video, hicock45. Very helpful and informative. I have a Taurus Judge and i've fired a wide variety of different ammunition through. Never tried the Federal 000 buck, though. Gonna have to pick some up. Seems to hold a nice consistent pattern.
Have a Governor.. 1st 2 rounds Winchester PDX1 .. last 4 Colt .45 .. suspect that will do just fine .. the .45 rounds fire very accurately at up to 25 yds .. excellent weapon
intelligent and focused man which leads to the important details and comparisons on 410 revolver defense in a No Nonsense ,helpful and straight-forward ,compact video, well done. I've heard a lot of people say a 410 is kind of a Wimpy round, I don't think any of those people have been hit by 410 triple buck at 7 yards though ,great vid.
One of my favorite videos. I was surprised at the spread from a 3 inch barrel compared to my experience with shooting full length shotguns. I'd like a comparison video of different barrel lengths. keep up the great work guys.
The spread on that damned thing is insane... Basically a gun you can only use if you live alone and know for sure no one except a robber is anywhere in the vicinity of the point you´re shooting.
my neighbors front door is 5 ft from mine. one major concern for me (and a problem for my 9mm and 12ga) is overpenetration. I'd rather pepper her door that pull through it. I've been wondering about the judge, was mostly told it was novelty. seems to me to be perfect for apartment defence. just my thoughts though. cant expect alot of spread control out of a 3 in barrel
these 00 buckshot loads are throwing the equivalent of four .32 ACP rounds, and have half the firepower of a low-recoil 12 gauge 00 buck. Not bad at all
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about. It's a whole lot more than JUST a "snakegun" or a "novelty". People who think that are definitely not very knowledgeable at all concerning pistols and self defense.
I don't own a gun, and have very little experience with them, but I feel that if anyone wants to keep a gun at home for defense they should take the time to learn how to shoot rather than buying something like this and just hoping they can put enough lead out there to get the job done. Once you fall back to saying, "Well, it's better than throwing a rock," I think you've pretty much finalized the review of this gun.
Ill stick to my handed down 60-70's Remington 870 Wingmaster. Reliable and when not shooting clay, its loaded with 3 bird shot and 2 buck shot. In case if the baddy doesn't get the point.
Jonah Patton LOL....I know what you mean. A buddy of mine fell for the gimmick of bump fire stocks and put one on his AK - after I specifically told him NOT to. LOL. He got it, installed it and called me over for some range time [he has a 90 acre farm]. Well, I'm a well practiced shooter [and have 2 AKs myself] and I STILL couldn't get it to work 100%. He couldn't get it to work at all. Man was he pissed...lol.
Jonah Patton I agree. Full auto is simply for keeping heads down...not littering a body with holes. You need accuracy for that and F.A. will not give you that. Controlled breathing and trigger discipline are what get the job done.
druid189189 and for keeping heads down a quick trigger finger can accomplish that too, i just find it so funny that libs are trying to ban full auto rifles and have no idea that out of every like 800 "assault weapons" only one can shoot full auto, or as they like to call it "900 rounds per minute" to give it that scary sound to idiots and even still a psycho with a full auto is less dangerous than a psycho with a semi auto. It just doesnt make sense that the people who know the LEAST about guns are the ones that want to act like they're the most knowledgeable on them
It seems like the Judge would serve very weel as a home defense or self defense gun. The 000 and 45 Colt would do the trick at 10 yds. If you're shooting at something 100 feet away you may need to retake the ccw course.
+Carlos Rodriguez One of the reasons I bought it, other than its being a really quality, functional car, is that the things have nice leg room and incredible head room. I could wear a cowboy hat while sitting in one of those things if I wanted. Now I have the Honda Ridgeline because it has the same head room. Who'd a thunk it!
+Carlos Rodriguez Elements are huge inside. Imo they're the best SUV's for a city dweller. You can hose out the inside and it's just a box on wheels so you've got space for days.
This darn Judge is one of the best handguns I ever shot on the range when wandering around America. It’s just Wo!W! What a BOOOM. It’s a real hand cannon.
I know you tried the Winchester PDX1 which has the 3 brass wads and 12 BB's, I was hoping that you might have also shot the Hornandy Critical Defense which fires a single slug and 2 - 35 caliber lead balls just to compare the different loads. This is a 2011 video so the Hornandy may not have been available just then. Do you have a video comparing the 2?
Donavon Armour no , hood means my neighborhood , its short for neighborhood you simple fellow you , my "hood" is my home or my neighborhood , your "hood" is your neighborhood you rocket scientist you , now Getto is the slums my "hood" is not in the Getto but im assuming yours is based on your attack on the word getto with such low I.Q feed back
I really enjoy your videos! You have a great personality and a great sense of humor. I will be binge watching. I also like that you connect & inspect. Not every vid does that but they should. You have won a new fan.
I was at the range yesterday and a guy was literally 10 feet to my left! Four (4) of his pellets hit my target?? If you use this gun for anything but home defense, get ready to be sued from people who are going to be ht from pellets that will scatter way out from your intended target.
Great video. I own one in stainless and it shoots lower, but I found your spread demo very educational. I don't shoot lower than 4, mostly the slug/ball/pellet type of hybrid which is very accurate with a halo around the main grouping. Thank you for doing what you do. Always fun and educational! @hickok45 is one of my favorites, and your non biased opinions are well received by everyone I know.
I was wondering, with all your experience, training, etc. have you ever been in a situation where you have drawn or used or nearly used your concealed weapon?
Damn. I think I'd rather have a guy steal my tv than risk putting holes into everything in my livingroom. I learned from my gramps that shotguns make for a lot of work when discharged in the home. Pretty interesting, and I know you don't have to use shells, but I think I'll stick with the Shield.
Yeah my ex wife shot thru the wall in my studio w/10g she had her finger on the trigger checking out a noise when she opened the door to clear the room she shot a hole in the wall.
filthyprankz Yep she was Cocked & Loaded in hindsight it is a bit funny Im just glad some kid wasn't walking by that side of the house & got hit back then we had lotta kids in the neighborhood & sometimes they would cut thru back yards , btw not a good idea.
We explain in every video at the shooting table where the gun comes from or if it's mine. Then we don't always repeat that in woods walks and such. In the first video with every gun, we give the source. Some guns I buy, some I already owned, some are loaners, and a few have been gift. It's in the videos.

Question of the day: is this gun overpowered? Ill let you be "The Judge" on that one. (sorry i had to)
Ba-dum tsss ...
+REDRUM Nothing is overpowered if you're an American.
+D3thM4sh33n Except Barack Obama.
+D3thM4sh33n im canadian
REDRUM That explains your murderous intent. IMHO we are worried about the wrong border.
After watching you Hit the Gong ..with 45 lc... You Had me SOLD !! Thanks for the Scientific Testing !!-
The fact he does MULTIPLE of each round, perfect testing
how therapeutic is that?! my friend, you must have the best retirement/hobbies ever. so envious. lolz!
+ta2joe13 I'll probably never retire; my new "job" is too much fun. :-)
+hickok45 :)
@33:56 you can see the .45 actually curving down and hit the target. That's cool!
I noticed that at normal speed. Then I started at 33:54 at 1/4 speed at it's much easier to see.
I saw it to WOW lol!
Came here to post this. On a side note, I'm really surprised he actually hit the gong with it fairly consistently. I have one, and .45 LC isn't near as accurate for me, but I have the shorter barreled "Public Defender" (and I'm a worse shot...)
Q. Why would you want a 410 pistol
A. Because sawn of shotguns are illegal silly
Late post, but there's this one called a Mossberg it's legal.
@@contentcreator8750 its called a shockwave, made by mossberg
@@SweeTea414 I believe they make a 12 gauge and 410 model of the shockwave dont they
i am unemployed 12 and 20
Plus they're thought of as effective for Pests. Birdshot 3 inch shell packs some serious pest extermination potention.
John, you're making my eyes cross with those fast sweeping close-ups of the 000 buck. Great videos! Keep up the good work!
I'd love to see a revisit on this with the new 410 ammo designed for handguns it really change the game with these revolvers
This man is a national treasure.
You are looking at
+Turbz turntablegod even a pedophile?
Shot a 6" model yesterday and was really impressed by the groupings. Even at 15 yards, all four pellets were on a paper plate. Amazingly, one or two usually hit the 10 ring. Really neat gun, might have to pick one up.
I have decided after some serious thought, that Mr Hickok is such an exemplary role model to all of us fans in the Gun community, role models being so important in our lives I have come to the conclusion he should be the new Dr Who!.
Agreed
Crazy, the last 45 colt on the gong you could see the bullet in flight.
Can confirm, would not want to be shot by that.
especially across the average room, even with bird shot.
I don't want to be shot with an airgun
You could tell how much fun he had with this ammo. He's having a hell of a time
13:23 "So we'll leave that for you to judge" what unintentional word play!!
Seems like science to me observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
GuitarZombie it is "scientifically" testing the spread over distance of the different ammo's. that however is not telling the effectiveness of the round on a body.
neverknows best
If I shoot him and he lives, he may want revenge on me.
lol
If you break into my home where my family live and sleep your dead period!
33:51
WHAT IN THE GODSMACK?!?!?!
the 45's can be seen flying through the air and hitting the large black metal target and the Ram.
Home defense is close range. 00 buck in that thing will do the trick but if an intruder grabs one of your kids you'll wish you had a single slug in the chamber to place the shot.
the spread is very overstated though. if you can shoot the head off a turkey with bird shot why can't you place a precise shot on a grown man?
Spread at ten feet is almost nonexistent but would you want to take that chance when the scumbag is using your child as a shield?
Another great video, hicock45. Very helpful and informative. I have a Taurus Judge and i've fired a wide variety of different ammunition through. Never tried the Federal 000 buck, though. Gonna have to pick some up. Seems to hold a nice consistent pattern.
'Three of them little wafers...' You're killing me! Keep up the good work Hickock45.
Have a Governor.. 1st 2 rounds Winchester PDX1 .. last 4 Colt .45 .. suspect that will do just fine .. the .45 rounds fire very accurately at up to 25 yds .. excellent weapon
My choice of ammo for this piece would be the .000 buck. Devastating.
Now they have a 3in model and you can get winchester 3in 000buck with 5 pellets in it.
Love this video, and I own a 3" ss judge, and I absolutely luv it!
intelligent and focused man which leads to the important details and comparisons on 410 revolver defense in a No Nonsense ,helpful and straight-forward ,compact video, well done.
I'd like a comparison video of different barrel lengths. keep up the great work guys.
when shooting the gong with the 45 colt ammo. the 5th round you can see the bullet fly and hit the target.
+D Perry "moves really slow" lmao
+D Perry i dont see anybody volunteering to catch one
I'm implying that 900fps isn't that slow for a Pistol especially one sending 225 grains down range
You're seeing the vapor trail
Joe Biliello Nice, could hunt small game with that.
Hornady Critical Defense 410 is the Best ammo for these Revolvers. a 41 cal tipped bullet and 2 ball combo. devastating.
the pan was like,
oh, Hickok is done shooting me, I will get out of the way!
The spread on that damned thing is insane... Basically a gun you can only use if you live alone and know for sure no one except a robber is anywhere in the vicinity of the point you´re shooting.
The 000 makes it safer in that respect, though. But I agree. And at it's current price of almost $500, there are MUCH better self defense options.
Jeremy J.
Monsterballs dont have kids and walls can be replaced so this works for me!
Monsterballs I´d much rather kill a person that has chosen to set aside his humanity to attack me and my property, than hurt a loved one.
my neighbors front door is 5 ft from mine. one major concern for me (and a problem for my 9mm and 12ga) is overpenetration.
People who think that are definitely not very knowledgeable at all concerning pistols and self defense.
coming back to these videos i grew up watching before i buy one.
"Let's shoot that again" -hickok45
Driving with ear-pro on, something's about to go down
Note to self: Dont visit Hickok in a zombie disguise.
These videos help to choose the best weapon for the need of each one.
It just doesnt make sense that the people who know the LEAST about guns are the ones that want to act like they're the most knowledgeable on them
druid189189 a 3 round burst m16 will do fine. a MP5 FA will shred anything that you aim it at, they were designed for more then keeping heads down.
It seems like the Judge would serve very weel as a home defense or self defense gun. The 000 and 45 Colt would do the trick at 10 yds. If you're shooting at something 100 feet away you may need to retake the ccw course.
How in gods green earth did you fit inside that element????
+Carlos Rodriguez One of the reasons I bought it, other than its being a really quality, functional car, is that the things have nice leg room and incredible head room. I could wear a cowboy hat while sitting in one of those things if I wanted. Now I have the Honda Ridgeline because it has the same head room. Who'd a thunk it!
+hickok45 nearly 2 million subs and still replying to 4 year old videos. 10/10 best youtuber
+Jonny Murray Damn right, i love it!
+Carlos Rodriguez Elements are huge inside. Imo they're the best SUV's for a city dweller. You can hose out the inside and it's just a box on wheels so you've got space for days.
***** +2 points have been added to your "I saw it first" account.
"Got my high capacity semi-automatic stapler out again " 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A range in your yard, unlimited ammo, unlimited guns to try. What's not to like?
I do like watching some of the older videos an this is a great exsample of how inportent it is to choose the right amo for your purpose
"Beats a sharp stick, right?" lol Good ole kickock45
I bet people who don't know what a judge is saw the target at the beginning and were like "What the hell!"
Would be interesting to see flechette ammo fired from this gun.
Ditto, was thinking about purchasing this gun specifically for flechette rounds.
Lachlan Hamilton dragons breath would be very intimidating , also , you could fend off an entire getto
Or dragons breath.
Donavon Armour no , hood means my neighborhood , its short for neighborhood you simple fellow you , my "hood" is my home or my neighborhood , your "hood" is your neighborhood you rocket scientist you , now Getto is the slums my "hood" is not in the Getto but im assuming yours is based on your attack on the word getto with such low I.Q feed back
Donavon Armour Donavon, Clean your room and stop playing games all day. and FYI white shoes are a bad Choice
I really enjoy your videos! You have a great personality and a great sense of humor. I will be binge watching. I also like that you connect & inspect. Not every vid does that but they should. You have won a new fan.
2:24 those rounds look like Energizer Batteries lol
Can you review the semi auto staple gun.
"Beats a sharp stick" That"s funny LoL
Damn. I think I'd rather have a guy steal my tv than risk putting holes into everything in my livingroom. I learned from my gramps that shotguns make for a lot of work when discharged in the home. Pretty interesting, and I know you don't have to use shells, but I think I'll stick with the Shield.
Coyote Bongwater I find it kind of odd you have a fox as an avatar but your name involves the word coyote
Yeah my ex wife shot thru the wall in my studio w/10g she had her finger on the trigger checking out a noise when she opened the door to clear the room she shot a hole in the wall.
Watchman4u no offense but that's pretty funny that she shot at nothing
filthyprankz Yep she was Cocked & Loaded in hindsight it is a bit funny Im just glad some kid wasn't walking by that side of the house & got hit back then we had lotta kids in the neighborhood & sometimes they would cut thru back yards , btw not a good idea.

You guys have the best camera work of any UA-camr
0:10 know thats what i called "Drive by"
hickcock do you pay for all of your guns or do different sponsors like send you the guns to feature on your channel
We explain in every video at the shooting table where the gun comes from or if it's mine. Then we don't always repeat that in woods walks and such. In the first video with every gun, we give the source. Some guns I buy, some I already owned, some are loaners, and a few have been gift. It's in the videos.
I have a couple questions, what kind of gauge are you using and could you use a slug
Clorox Bleach he was using 410ga and I don't think
