The Mercedes EQS is the first of a whole line of fully electric sedans and crossovers from the German automaker. On the surface, it has all the goods - powerful dual motors, a long-range battery, and an entire dashboard made of LCD screens. But in a lot of other ways, it misses the mark for what we're wanting from a German EV.

Ha Ha, Toto killed it. My neighbor seems happy with his, I haven't had a chance to drive his yet but it is nice, I like it. I have an S-Class and I can't say I would change that for this but an actual electric S-Class would be very nice. It's interesting that you compared it to a CLS because that's what his EQS replaced, a CLS AMG. If I were to go out and buy an electric car right now I would probably lean towards the e-Tron GT, that thing looks mean.

@@TheSmokingTire If redesigning the brake pedal, I always thought that including a detent somewhere mid-travel to indicate the end of regen and the start of friction braking would make the most sense. The current trend of fixed regen braking levels make as much sense to me as fixed steering increments or fixed throttle levels. There is already a pedal for stopping, so why not task it with modulating all forms of braking? By avoiding the detent and friction brakes, you could learn to drive in the most efficient manner. You'd also retain the ability to coast and not need to constantly keep your foot controlling the throttle pedal outside of cruise control.

The looks are there for sure, but the fact they screwed up the chance to make it ride like silk is the real letdown. Someone probably cooked the brakes, when Zack slammed on them, that’s obvious they are glazed BADLY.
EV acceleration is turned down for comfort no doubt, 600+ lb.ft is still no joke but they are completely out klassed here in every way except the perception of interior durability.

Definitely not an S-class in any stretch of the imagination, in my mind at least. The styling lacks all the grace of the S-class. Why not just make an electric S-class? Seems more sensible, less R&D, no need to include yet ANOTHER model in the portfolio (as if Mercedes needs any more models).
That said, it’s Infinitely better than a Tesla. This car will actually feel like you spent $100,000.

    • @Wised1000

Because an S class cannot fit enough batteries to give it more than a 50 mile range. Futhermore, its drag coefficient, which happens to be a huge factor in highway speed range efficiency, is like a brick in comparison.

Hey guys, love your videos. I am a Taycan owner. I have to say that the Taycan has the same "issue" with the variable brake pedal during regen. However, it is much less noticeable because Taycans have no regen paddles. But when using the adaptive cruise control or regen button, it is definitely there. So you are calling out a trend in German EVs broadly - not just the EQS.

Just bought the entry level 450+ amg line without the hyperscreen. All i can say is i have 0 regrets. Ultinately people need to understand that buying a car is so subjective. To be honest i do not give a darn abt speed and honestly i felt that even with the single motor its faster den a regular s class as i own the s320 as well. My purpose was a confortable luxury family car and this beast did more than that imo. Seats were so comfortable and futuristic as i got the cream color. Changed my wheels to the 21 inch ones and grille to the eqs 53 grille which made it look sportier. Ride was so smooth comfortable and honestly i am not a v8 engine kinda guy either. And tbh being one of the first few to drive it in my country i get head turns everywhere i go. The build quality on my car was near perfection unlike the tesla which has loose ends everywhere and taycan which very oftenly breaks down the latter especially. So ultimately its perspective =) the porshe taycan / etron gts / tesla / bmw were all in my cards when i test drive to find a new ev and honestly none of them could compare to the comfort and experience the eqs could give. Well maybe the bmw ix could but even so the price is way pricier and seats still are not as comfy. Well if you are a family guy or someone who prefers comfort and luxury over speed this wins any sport brands hands down. U can fit 3 strollers in the boot =). A surf board if you want as well. But if you are a taycan kind of guy well obviously look elsewhere =)

Rear Steering clarification: In the US, the car was origionally supposed to come with 4.5 degree standard and 10 degree optinal, and some of the first thousand or so pilot build cars only have the 4.5 degree (some seem to not have any at all) but they decided 10 degree would be standard, along with ventiullated seats, before regualar production started but after some of those early builds had already been built. So yeah, a little odd. If your vin ends 2000 or later, you almost certainly have 10 degree, but a decent chunk of the less then 2000, especially less then 1000 vins have 4.5 degree, and a few of them even have a $1300 credit for said missing standard.

Interesting comment on the driver warning; could it be your seating position? From everything I was taught you look far away from the steering wheel and somewhat low. I believe you're supposed to sit close enough to be able to rest your wrist on the top of the steering wheel at a light stretch, and adjust height until your eyeline is around the mid point of the windscreen.
I'm sure you'll say you're comfortable as you are, but you'll get used to however you sit over time...

    • @Ramkumar-cn7cx
      @Ramkumar-cn7cx 2 роки тому +1

Yes. His position is a problem. He sits too far back and that's why he gets the warning

No wrong. It is height adjustable. You have go to the quick settings to access it.

Lucid manages a 280 liter frunk right on top a 600 hp front motor in a 25 cm shorter car, Merc gives you none even in a RWD car. And NOT EVER a heat pump, so winter range is the worst relative to EPA/WLTP of any brand.
Sadly the Lucid Air somehow has to have a silly letterbox sedan boot. Which customer ever wants that over a lift gate or estate boot? And no wagon version for ANY of the EVs out there of course.

    • @Mgoblagulkablong

No heat pump? That is a deal breaker and incredible, Mercedes relies on fools buying their cars just for the badge.

H-m-m-m-m. Have owned & driven many luxury brands over my life. Love @ first sight on the EQS! Purchased the EQS580 and must affirm (like all of the new tech cars) you need to use it, spend the time understanding it & in my opinion you will be a pleased motorist. After 4 other EVs from Tesla Model 3 & Model Y’s to Genesis GV60 this car is wow!
In your commentary, at least compare it to the Model S which is lacking in many ways to this car. Tesla has great tech, super-charging, but after that still not upper level luxury.
EQS580 has the speed if you need it, the ride comfort & quiet interior with many standard features is superior to many other brands I have demoed. Price, not in my budget….CPO Mercedes most definitely is!
Braking has not been an issue in any mode from no regenerative to strong to all versions of regenerative.
Hey Mercedes has been exceptional & their beta AI IS REALLY A HOOT.
Just another view point, but realize that like most reviewers, your job is to (in a short use case) to describe issues before longer use.

The steering wheel adjustment warning might be why Tesla made that knight rider steering wheel? So the top won't obstruct the sensors, no matter the wheel height.

Matt knows! This is totally a CLS. It's just called an S-Class because it was the "first". That's disappointing, because the CLS has been a pioneering vehicle since it was conceived of. That brake pedal configuration is actually contra to how SBC brakes were configured. That system could tap the pad against the disc to prep the brakes for rapid application and dry the discs in the rain. Also, why is the driver sensor not with the rear view mirror any more? It's trying to stare into your soul! Riddle me this one. Does the electric BMW 7 series have significantly less range than this? Is it otherwise a lesser vehicle? I do hear it's heavy. Which of these two is the more appealing, assuming this does represent an electric S-Class for now.?
