Great review and that Lucid crossover scene was incredible. I know there’s air drag benefits, but have to think a better looking car would sell more than the range gained from saving .0002 on a drag coefficient.
At the asking price of this vehicle to have so many downsides from a brand that is known from excelling at those same categories in a line of cars that is ment to represent the best of their products, I think Mercedes butchered this one pretty bad.
It has to be intentional. They want the S class to be better to make sure traditional S class buyers keep buying them and make Mercedes better margins. This hopefully attracts new buyers away from other EVs while not eating into S Class sales.
@@twiincentral8780 It's far cheaper than the S class. It has about the same starting price of the S class, which is unheard of for an EV powertrain, which often costs as much as $10k more. (A bit unfair IMO) You save time by not going to the gas station once every week or two, its turning radius is amazing, the available HEPA filter is a big deal in the city and states like CA. Throttle House got some of their points wrong. They didn't mention if the car had the double paned windows option when mentioning the road noise. They claimed that you needed the top trim to get heated rear seats, but that option is actually available on all trims. The biggest issues with this car are the weight, the rear seat length and roof height (assuming tall people will be using the rear seats), brake feel, and ability to canyon carve that all buyers won't be doing anyways. It's the only true BEV luxury car on the market, unless you count the Lucid Air that currently costs significantly more.
@@updlate4756 I would still rather have an S-Class, because it's a nicer car overall. I agree with Twiin Central, this is made to pull EV buyers from other automakers, not to shift S-Class buyers within the brand. That not only covers their EV quotas, that also keeps their cash cows funding everything.
What makes the S class astonishing is not just how good it is, but also how it takes an antiquated technology (ICE), and makes it nearly as refined as an electric motor. That is truly an engineering marvel.
Thanks guys! A fair and realistic perspective. I can't see spending S Class money on this iteration but do hope it is just the beginning of what MB will ultimately do in the EV space.

Test drove an EQS and it’s certainly amazing inside. Gorgeous in fact. All I could think was how stupendously expensive it will be to fix all this tech when it breaks out of warranty. With the recently announced pricing plans to upcharge for horsepower unlock, I see the EQS values cratering after 3 years. But that’s the business plan- just buy another one I guess.
I’ve been seeing this car now for several months on the screen and I have to admit that the styling grows on me. It does not look that bad anymore to me, still I have not seen it in real life where it probably also will be much larger that I expect it to be.
I work at a Mercedes dealership and after seeing a couple up close and driving them for a bit, they are pretty large. Similar to a Model S length wise but more bulbous. Some atrocious panel gaps like Tesla too on the ones I’ve experienced. I largely agree with TH’s opinions on the driving experience as well.

I think current Mercedes interiors will date sooooo fast. These cars will be worthless in about 10 years because of the interior. Mercedes products of times gone past were timeless pieces of design. This, even compared to the lucid, is the exact opposite. I do really appriciate the fact that your reviews are critical where it needs to be while still being light and fun, makes me feel like i can trust you guys.
Best thing since, James, Richard, and Jeremy. I love y'all's videos so much. It's so refreshing when things don't feel forced, ie American Top Gear....
I wonder if some of the choices made was on purpose so that the S class buyers keeping buying them while hopefully attracting new customers who like this. Great review btw!
As always an entertaining review. The front end of this is too much Honda looking. It lacks presence that I’d expect from an expensive S class level Mercedes
6:15 Mercedes EQS 580 4MATIC is rated 610 km WLTP range in Europe by the way and Model S LR 585 km WLTP range. EQS 450+ rated 640 km WLTP range, Lucid Air rated 630 km WLTP range.
Nice review. Your comments on the body style are spot on. Mercedes design folks failed miserably with this one. The interior seems cool...I do like the dash. But "Hey Mercedes, fix this piece of crap". Lucid completely outclassed you here.
It is crazy how much better the Lucid is in almost every way and it's their first car. Merc does have some real benefits (dealer network, parts availability, resale if Lucid goes under) but Merc should be able to put out a better EV than this.
Mercedes isnt oblivious. They're purposely trying to push conventional cars as long as they can while also technically jumping into the inevitable electric powered future. They also know electric car buyers don't necessarily want something that looks too conventional, which this very much doesn't. This is them doing their toes in the water with a decent first attempt. This is the electric luxury sedan for those willing to go electric but not quite willing to go for a vehicle from a start-up automaker. But please, please, don't let any of this distract you from the fact that the Cincinnati Bengals still don't have an indoor practice facility!
You're blind af Eqs has way better range way better materials way more luxurious cabin way better chasis I could go on on. If the eqs is crap then the Lucid is worse than crap
I have nowhere near the disposable income to buy an S Class or this vehicle, but I love watching your reviews. I feel like the issue is that an electric power-train adds so much cost it is hard to keep the cost where they want it and provide all the luxuries that an S Class should have.
I would think that is a temporary problem, as an EV uses only 1/5 the parts of a conventional car, once the manufacturing capacity has increased, they should be able to make them cheaper than ICE cars.
@@sv650nyc7 I agree with you, but it doesn't change the fact that if you are comparing this to an ICE car today that you can get more stuff for your $ with an ICE car than an EV. A consumer would need to value the EV technology over the luxury to buy it.
Love the subtle ‘supercar blondie’ reference you slipped in there, lol. Not a fan of the car, but the tech is super cool. Another great video, thanks 😊

@@eventusvantos1905 That's not something you can explain... it's just a feeling... Can you explain why you like chocolate? Why you don't like That's nonsense.
I think the reason I'm so drawn to this channel is because I mostly think and agree with everything. Immediately I started this video, I thought, "That's not a very nice looking Mercedes". I really don't like how it looks, and the guys literally just said that and did the thing with the Lucid air. I loooove this channel
Other channels have put quite a bit more effort into reviewing this vehicle, e.g. Bjørn Nyland. He has measured the interior noise and has found the car to be exceptionally quiet. He also tested its range which is well beyond the weird US EPA range in real life. In Germany the car had no problems to go the entire way from Munich to Berlin ( ca. 360 Miles) on the motorway at a speed of ca. 75 mph on a single charge.
The thing is when Nyland is driving that car on the highway you can hear the road noise when he saying how quiet the car is. It's not quiet enough for it not to make a bunch of racket in the middle of his video. Also he criticizes the headlights on that vehicle. I don't think Throttle House gave this review short shrift at all. When they have to fly out to a city for a hosted demo event the automobile manufacturer limits their time which did not happen in the case of Mr. Nyland. I don't think he did a more thorough review at all and perhaps wasn't quite as honest with his criticism.
There's always one thing that confuses me about Mercedes talking about their reasoning for the EQS' shape. The Model S Plaid for reference, looks like a normal sedan, yet can have more range, while still being equal in drag coefficient numbers. EQS: 0.2 Model S Plaid: 0.208
This is a thing i dont understand. The EQS has a range rating of 483mi with WLTP. No Tesla comes even close to this in real world driving conditions. Only in the US EPA rating mercedes chose to under report the range by a lot.
That 0.08 difference is the equivalent to the difference between the drag coefficient of a fighter jet (0.021) and a Boeing 747 (0.031). So what Mercedes has done to achieve that number is incredible. Factor in that the luxury inside and things like rear steering add on so much weight compared to the spartan interior of the Tesla and it all makes sense why they placed so much effort to achieve the range they did.
Interesting that the EQS brakes were underwhelming. That's the same complaint some Model S Plaid reviewers had. Tesla now offers a carbon ceramic brake kit, but it's still disappointing. For EQS it sounds like part of the problem is how they blended regenerative braking and friction braking, a concern Tesla avoids by simply eliminating brake pedal control over regen braking. I'm happy to see 3 contenders in the large luxury EV sedan market, all with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Thomas and James…you boys are so entertaining that I find myself watching all your car reviews when I really don’t even care about the car that’s being reviewed! Bravo 👏🏽
I went to rewatch that section of the lucid video again. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Your creativity is just top notch. Nice intro too. Cars may be out of my league but the videos are still fun to watch.
I think the key takeaway here is that even though compared to the current group of EV’s this might feel like a step up from an interior and refinement perspective, it can’t hold a stick to 50 years of refinement of the current gas S-class. Their key disappointments always stemmed from the comparison to what a S class meant to them, not what it does compared to say a Tesla or other new EV startup offerings that offer something new but lack the refinement of the other established brands.
Why are German automakers determined to make the least desirable vehicles on the road? BMW's design department hates cars, Mercedes didn't bother to style the EQS at all and VW obviously cost cutting. This is going to be the malaise era 2.0, but in Germany?
@@davidestate this is their first full EV with a dedicated EV platform. Their first EV (more like a compliance car) was a modified version of the first generation A class with electric motors.
@@davidestate It isn't just the EQS. All German cars have been going downhill including the petrol ones. The new S class looks like a big A class and it doesn't bring anything significant. BMW is making the most offensive looking cars on the road and VW products are feeling even lower quality. I suppose that with the VW group products the lack of interior quality now matches the shitty engineering.
@@eventusvantos1905 What is desirable in the EQS. All I see is a large sedan which looks like a generic future car in a low budget game which has poor rear seating with 1950s overboosted power steering.
The most frustrating thing about this otherwise well produced review of the hyper screen is that you miss the innovation embedded in it e.g. the zero layer AI technology that learns how you use the system and adapts over time to bring up what you use all the time etc. You missed all the little conveniences that sum up what luxury is. For example, the car senses occupants and when you do things like reach for the screen to adjust seats it will make your seat appear larger on the screen so you can hit the target easier. Etc etc etc. All those little things amount to the one thing about luxury cars in that they focus on making things easier and effortless above anything etc. You only have to move from driving this to a Honda for you to realize what a big difference those things that may not stand out as wow features make. So am finding a lot of what actually separates this car from other EVs is missed in the EQS reviews. But hey it’s all about the shape right?
I’ve seen a couple of these on the road recently, and I gotta say this is a truly disappointing looking car. The fact that it isn’t all that nice inside, especially in the rear seat, and doesn’t drive well when pushing on, basically is 3 strikes. A good luxury car should look elegant but interesting, drive effortlessly and quietly at speed, and have an oasis of an interior dripping with leather, wood and metal and artfully integrated technology, and this misses in just about every way. Mercedes C, E and S sedans these days are almost aggressively generic and next to indistinguishable, but my friend whispered after seeing it, “that looks like a Kia. How much is that?” I told him, and then his head exploded.

@@updlate4756 I like everything you said except for one thing. A Mercedes lasting 15 years 😂 def not common
The production quality and attention to details here is just top notch.
Hats off to ya'll.
What makes the S class astonishing is not just how good it is, but also how it takes an antiquated technology (ICE), and makes it nearly as refined as an electric motor. That is truly an engineering marvel.

So what do we actually know about the Lucid. Just some figures. I would choose the EQS over the Lucid any day.
@@hermanstokbrood What are you talking about? Throttle House did a full drive review on the Lucid in December and so did Doug Demuro, as well as a bunch of other magazines. We know just as much about the Lucid as the EQS, Rivian, etc.

But the interior is so plasticy..
you should only lease these, 36 months max.
Great production - great writing. You guys keep pushing the envelope and you’re getting close to old school Top Gear levels.
The front quarter POV makes this look like the evolution of a 2007 Civic.
I’ve been seeing this car now for several months on the screen and I have to admit that the styling grows on me. It does not look that bad anymore to me, still I have not seen it in real life where it probably also will be much larger that I expect it to be.
I’ve only seen one on the road so far it was 580 in that brown color they offer now, it looked pretty massive to me
I feel the same way about the Tesla Cybertruck. Can’t wait to see one in person.
it looks bad when compared to eqxx which looks stunning and is more efficient
I work at a Mercedes dealership and after seeing a couple up close and driving them for a bit, they are pretty large. Similar to a Model S length wise but more bulbous. Some atrocious panel gaps like Tesla too on the ones I’ve experienced. I largely agree with TH’s opinions on the driving experience as well.

That cut to RS7 was fantastic! You guys really put in the effort and bring an extra car just for that joke. I really admire you for these small big things
A car is not properly reviewed until you guys review it. Seriously great stuff without holding back criticism when it is deserved.

After seeing one in person, actually think it looks really good
I have nowhere near the disposable income to buy an S Class or this vehicle, but I love watching your reviews.

I really don't like how it looks, and the guys literally just said that and did the thing with the Lucid air. I loooove this channel
*The intros gets me everytime* 🤣👌🏻
He's my go to guy for ev car reviews.
There's always one thing that confuses me about Mercedes talking about their reasoning for the EQS' shape. The Model S Plaid for reference, looks like a normal sedan, yet can have more range, while still being equal in drag coefficient numbers.
EQS: 0.2
Model S Plaid: 0.208
The Lucid Air has more range and exactly the same drag coeffcient as the eqs and is way more gorgeous than the eqs
This is a thing i dont understand. The EQS has a range rating of 483mi with WLTP. No Tesla comes even close to this in real world driving conditions. Only in the US EPA rating mercedes chose to under report the range by a lot.
Tesla never reach their EPA range. That should ring a bell......
Wrong yet eqs has a way higher range than the Plaid
Finally the eqs from the best UA-camrs/reviewers. Amazing vid 😄
Love this channel. You guys review interesting cars in a very fun way... Great format!

12:56 "if we had long blond hair, we would do a video on it".... omg that was a gem... I almost spilled my coffee... hat's off, that was brilliant 😂👍
Seems closer to an E Class than an S Class.
The EQE is coming...that would be closer to the E class than this price wise and size wise.
One of the best show’s on UA-cam period not just cars
Why are German automakers determined to make the least desirable vehicles on the road? BMW's design department hates cars, Mercedes didn't bother to style the EQS at all and VW obviously cost cutting. This is going to be the malaise era 2.0, but in Germany?
This is Mercedes First EV. If not your cake, just wait for the rest of the line to come out.
Speak for yourself. This is very desirable except to blind boomers
@@eventusvantos1905 What is desirable in the EQS. All I see is a large sedan which looks like a generic future car in a low budget game which has poor rear seating with 1950s overboosted power steering.

Great review. Everything about this car looks tacky! From the plastic grill, exterior design, and hyper screen. This will look so dated in 5 years.
In an uncertain world, it’s comforting to know that vehicular voice command stays consistent.
Luv ur reviews :) plz review the LC 500 Convertible! Thx
Yeah, it looks like a Hyundai.
I might buy one in 3 years when it's about $12k.
Just when I think you've completely mastered the editing game, you drop the 12:00 RS7 bomb. Well done chaps.
