When we first saw the new AMG GT63 on display at the reveal, we were immediately disappointed that the stunning, cab-rear, two-seat sportscar had been replaced by, essentially, a hard top version of the SL, which we are not big fans of. Fortunately, AMG has worked some true magic into this car and the GT feels like a completely different, and much improved, everyday sports tourer.
Mercedes provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

Shifting from competing with Porsche to Bentley and Aston Martin is a good insight. This really is a GT, the first generation was trying to compete with the 911. No more. It is what it is I guess. Still seems a bit too heavy!

This new GT from AMG is simply what its named: it's a GT. Period! It's a Grand Turismo, but not a hardcore sports car.
And in 2024 of course this means, that it's a lot heavier than sports or GT cars from 10 years ago, because it is full with the best technology.
And Mercedes-AMG compensates its weight with even more technology. So much of tech, that trashtalkers like you simply don't have any points for critizism. It just destroys a lot of much lighter sports cars, but it's also much more daily drivable as a GT.
This new AMG GT is bloody fast and it drives just perfectly, and due to its AWD system even in winter. This is something the predecessor AMG GT simply couldn't achieve.

Seeing this new generation has made me appreciated and realized just how great the old GT was. It may not be the fastest but it had all the character and charm with its front-mid setup and transaxle transmission.
Still one of the best reviewers out there!

Funny the systems put in place to manage weight add more weight. Either way it's certainly quick and for majority of owners putting around town in nice days and to car shows on weekends it will be great.

@@craiganderson8569 Agree 100% on the buttons, but I am an actual buyer of these cars and as much as I love Aston, they are well into the $300Ks. Same with Bentley. Merc is competing with the other GTs very well and staying around $200K. Then all the silliness begins: if you are so rich why can't you afford $300K... these choices are all part of a much bigger financial picture. But, yes, I hate screens too.
@@eastbaystreet1242 I agree with you. I would actually never buy a brand new Aston. A Vantage after two years will have depreciated to a point that it will be the same price, or cheaper than this Merc. A 911 is the only one I would buy brand new (of this level and price point).

The target demo of this car aren’t be driving it in a way where the weight make a difference. Between the looks, sound, and cargo area, this is for the King of the Country Club.
100%. My AMG is EVEN heavier than this, but it is an S Class, full four seat cabriolet and it is surrounded by late model S63s and SLs at our country club. There are also a lot of Porsches, a few Astons, several Bentleys, a handful of Rolls - probably a fairly representative mix of the high-end car market. Mine weighs a whopping 4,800 pounds, but who cares - I am not racing teenagers at stoplights (not racing anyone, actually). But when I want some phat pickup, it is there. When I want some snap, crackle, pop I can just push one button for sport mode.
As long as they keep the 2 liter milk carton of an engine out of the gt it should be alright. The biggest issue with most of the past amgs has always been traction. It's been better in a few instances and glad to see it's good here.

Such a beautiful design. It's unfortunate Mercedes went with a big screen, no buttons. For that kind of money, I want actual buttons. The less digital display/screens the better.

Well for a sports car it is - this is not a sports car. It's a real GT and they are now all in this weight range.

Sports cars used to make me enthusiastic and fall in love with cars in general, back in the 90s when I was a teenager... Even my mother's car, a Honda-engined Rover, the first car I ever drove, had more soul than this Merc. Today's cars are disappointment, they fail to make you dream about them. No wonder the newer generation has no interest in them...

The party trick is that the rear seats fold flat. Its more practical than any of the competition.
We have come to a time where some sports cars weigh more than a pickup with a V8 that sounds like a V6. Mercedes please remember what SL stands for. This is like bringing a trailer on a hiking holiday.

I don't think I've ever been LESS interested in a sportscar than this thing...
This car makes me appreciate the previous generation quite a bit more.
As a racing fan, I can not accept this. The AMG GT3 is absolutely amazing and still is competitive. I can not think about ANY way this car can be a GT3 entry. Since the GT was the only viable option I don't see how Merc does go differently than Aston did a couple of years ago and completely vanish from endurance racing. This would be so awful!
Well, maybe I am wrong, but this really is not what I wanted and now I would not buy (haha, even if I could, I'd still pick different brands, I am too loyal in that way) any of the current cars ...
Yes, the GT was probably a lesser 911 for most, but it was something different and at that quite unique. I liked to strike the AMG GT as the German, still modern, Viper since the SLS is no longer with us. Long hood with a big engine (even if it is the "same" as in any other 63 model) and made stuff work on the racetrack it probably shouldn't.
But as you can see, I am absolutely not the targeted audience and it likely is the best choice for Merc.

4000lbs is pushing it these days. 4300lbs is overboard. We all threw a fit about the M2 and M4 weighing within 100lbs of each other. Are the days of the middleweight high performance sports car far behind us?
It's a GT, not a pure sports car. The point is to combine luxury and performance, and luxury features add weight. Almost all GTs weigh over 4000 pounds.

A 90s sl weighed right around 4000lbs this has so much more tech than one of those cars and awd and is only a couple 100lbs heavier. It’s not that bad by Mercedes standards they’ve always been heavy
@@jpl8878 True, but as a fully fledged GT (2+2 config) it weighs more than several notable cars in its class by a wide margin, even with the rear seats removed. The AM DB12, Vantage and Ferrari Roma all clock in below 2 tons and are of similar proportions. Other notable entries like the Bentley Continental GT and BMW M8 Coupe are well beyond the range of sports car as their weight (5000lbs+) makes them more comparable to saloons and estates that are available today.
One might attribute most of the added weight to the AWD system. With the refinements made to the previous gen AMG GT, though, it could be argued that the original formula made for an equally capable car without the need for such technologies. But the 992 Turbo S also showed us that AWD doesn’t have to mean Added Weight Distributed, coming in at ~3700lbs.
Not withstanding the top-of-the-line GT63 AMG E Performance, weighing an additional 500lbs due to the hybrid system, making that car almost as heavy as a Taycan Turbo GT. You get power, but you can only put so much lipstick on a pig.

The extra weight is like strapping a Harley Davidson Fat Boy to a Porsche 911 Turbo. Where does Mercedes hide all that weight?
possibly the chassis itself, since it is based on the SL, and convertibles need a really stiff lower chassis to compensate the non existent roof to comply with safety regulations, and also the V8 itself weighs more than a flat 6.

This new GT being so distant from the old one i believe the previous gen is going to be an enthusiast car in a few years wich is crazy to say but its mercedes fault for revolutionozing the car instead of evolving it .
Would like to see a comparison between this and the old gt on track to see if technology can overcome the old gt lightness

The competing Aston Martin DB12 has the same Mercedes engine but with 90hp more and weights 600 pounds less whilst being just as big and luxurious. How is that possible?

People complain about weight never buy nor track this car. This is a very sporty GT car and nails that while looking beautiful.
I’ve spent a lot of seat time in the car. It’s spectacular. You want a light sports car get the last cayman around otherwise that story is over.

You shouldn't have mentioned the weight, it gave the poors an excuse besides the price to hate.
It also "fixes" all the things that definitely didn't need fixing from the previous AMG GT, like the silhouette and the weight.

I honestly wasnt expecting any praise after the SL review, mildly disappointing they shifted markets with the car since I love the first gen AMG GT so much, but hey, I cant afford one either way

It's a nice car no doubt, great even, but it's so derivative looking; Aston Martin One-77 from the front, and 911 Carrera from the rear. Now I realize the SL/GT needed an update, but I still wished they went more 50s 300 Gull wing like the older iconic GT then what they got. This car, although handsome, doesn't yell Mercedes Benz to me. Only the front emblem tells you that. And the weight! Oh well. Good review as always Matt!
I dont know why someone would buy this over a 911; MB’s are all heavy and feel it when driving. Also, they burn through tires as a result.
I really like how they grafted a Porsche rear end on it. Works well with the lines of the car 😅 I do like how it looks though. Nothing that sticks out. Just a sleek, coherent design with no over styling. Me gusta.

Interior is deal breaker. I have the w222 S63 AMG coupe and it has usable rear seats for adults. It is still the Best GT car for daily driving. Porsche 911 turbo is better sports car than this any day.

It’s a SAD time at Mercedes. The AMG GT WAS the 911 fighter. Not anymore. And the SL is the SL, it should always be its own legendary vehicle.
Thank you governments around the world for forcing changes that have caused vehicle to balloon in weight. I feel so much after knowing the vehicles around me are double the weight they were twenty years ago.
