It truly makes me really sad what happened with them so much that I am really wishing that AMD steps it up and makes something competitive against nvidia so I can go with them. For funsies I crunched the numbers and, IF the added cache improves the 7950X to the same extent it improved the 5800X, then we can expect the 7950X3D to yield 20-25% more frames than the 5800X3D in games where the 5800X3D is currently in the lead.
      But there are a lot of unknowns. In addition to the scheduling issues, im not sure how the cache will be able to handle the extra voltage and heat. The cache made the 5800X3D a very cool and low wattage cpu that you cant manually overclock. The 7 series cpus are hot and high wattage cpus that... i guess also cant be manually overclocked because they essentially auto-overclock. Im not sure how they're gonna pull this off, it seems... incompatible? I have faith in team red, but they likely got a serious challenge to overcome.

      I'm going to bet the gap in the lineup (no 7800X) is where they'll put the X3D part. I always thought the 5700 and 5800 were too close, this makes the lineup 6 core, 8 core, 8 core with 3d cache, 12 core and 16 core. A clear difference in each part, which I quite like over a slight freq bump.

    That boot tuning should be done with a progress message on screen showing what it's doing. Because as the CPU designer, they should be able to reconfigure the IO chiplet to drive RAM at the different speeds while keeping the temporary BIOS state somewhere else (like the cache).

    Hey Jay! I don't know if you see this, and I hate to have to write this down before even watching the video - but could you add sandbox/physics games to your benchmarks? I know Besiege and Scrap Mechanic would easily overload these CPUs, and I'd be curious to see how V-cache would affect performance in these types of games. (I'm running a 3700X right now, and it struggles a LOT in most my games.)
    Edit : so, I know that the frequency at which a game gets updated is important for benchmarks. The rarer, the better, in this case (though, I'd love a few more performance updates for Scrap Mechanic, especially a fix for the awful performance hit when you've explored too much in survival mode). So, since Scrap Mechanic rarely gets updates, it would be an excellent, stable game benchmark for years (sadly) at a time.
    Also it seems like I'm top comment (not anymore lol), so thank you all for helping this comment being seen! Oh and, Jay, if you need benchmarks for the games I've proposed, I can probably create a set of benchmarks creations to put a load on the CPU. One thing which would be VERY important to do, though, would be to always use the same creation - and mention that FPS without a heavy creation loaded in and being active doesn't really matter. For example, a CPU with 400 FPS when there's not a lot going on (let's call it CPU A) would look a lot better than one which only has a hundred FPS (CPU B). However, if CPU A only has one or two FPS under heavy load, and CPU B over fifteen (doesn't seem like a lot, but trust me, it is in Scrap Mechanic and Besiege) then CPU B must scale up much better under heavy load on a single core. And I know I'm repeating here, but V-cache tested on these games would be EXTREMELY interesting and useful to know about for many gamers' next builds.

They realized that it would be better to lower the clock and voltage, but I wonder if the Zen 4 reverted to HALT/C1 since you told it to lock the clock. About AVX-512, I think it also depends a lot on what specific instructions of it you use. There are some instructions that are only half the width, but allow you to do some stuff in a single instruction instead of using multiple. In those cases even the 2 step AVX-512 can be a significant upgrade and AVX-512 on AMD seems to have no performance downside like it does on Intel. Phoronix has some great benches for that topic. Sometimes it adds only a few percent of perf, sometimes it quadruples it!

    • @NJRoadfan
      @NJRoadfan Рік тому

      @Lurch7861 Alder Lake doesn't support AVX-512 at all thanks to the E-cores. It would be interesting to see Cinebench on Zen 4 with AVX-512 disabled to get a more direct comparison of IPC. Zen 4's AVX-512 is a bit of a compromise design, so it may not be faster to use vs. AVX2.
      As for overclocking, mainstream CPUs have been doing turbo boost and bouncing off the TjMax thing for awhile now. In regular use I doubt it will be sitting at 95C all that much. Tests like Prime95 and Cinebench are "worst case scenario" and don't reflect real world usage patterns. The reality is most of the time the CPU is idle. Way back in the dark ages before SpeedStep, CPUs ran at 100% power all the time, even when doing nothing!

    I recall a lot of ppl saying the AMD Phenom series CPU's were garbage. I had a PC with an MSI 990 series chipset MOBO and a Phenom 2 975 (3.6Ghz) quad core black series. With a 180 watt TDP CPU cooler I was able to get stable clock speeds of 4.25GHz with idle temps in the upper 20s and load temps in the mid 50s peak temps never exceeded 61C. I was also running 2 MSI HD 7980 GPUs in crossfire and 16GB of Corsair Dominator Ram in dual channel mode and 2 Hitachi 10K rpm 380GB HDDs in raid 0. If the chip is still pulling 220w, yet the shaving allows the heat to escape faster, its dumping the same amount of heat in the room, just faster. Since you're clearly taking a jab at the CPUs, there is generally an end goal to having a CPU fully loaded. If Zen 4 and Alder Lake are at the same wattage, yet ADL dissipates its heat faster, and takes 40% longer to complete the same task, which one is actually worse for the human sitting in the room with it?

I plan on staying with this setup for another year or so (I was a day 1 adopter of Ryzen 7 1800x and x370(first asus board didn't have a BIOS so I swapped to a Crosshair VI), and it had a lot of teething issues).
