This is why people like Jason. Simple, honest approach. I like hitting the river bank sometimes myself. Some of my best walleye fishing has actually been off shore on small tributaries in the fall. Awesome video.
I certainly appreciate your authenticity Jason. This also reminds me of my childhood fishing the shorelines and culverts. Thanks for keeping it real. Scheels is a great place to shop for the whole family.
Agreed that’s how I grew up fishing was on the shores of Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River. Very nostalgic for me, and when I do a video about it I always love editing it👍🏼
When I was working in minot during the boom I hammered the eyes and pike in the Souris River no matter where you fished on that river even right in downtown minot... I think people would be surprised by the size of eyes in those rivers
Youre blessed to have such a tremendous walleye fishery. Especially walleyes that go up small rivers like that. Here in southern ontario that just doesnt exist for walleye. Post spawn steelhead yes. Keep it up.
my local small rivers offer some fantastic shore fishing in spring and fall. alls you need is some 6lb mono an 1/8 oz jig head and a mister twister tube or a paddle tail bait. the real secret is a hand tied bucktail jig
man. can't wait, here in Arkansas the walleye run is about to start. we do best on the usuall soft plastics. like white mister twister, swimbaits and the biggest are almost always caught on lrg sized cranks. love to catch walleye, almost always catch a few catfish and think I've hooked the state record...lol
Another great video Jason, thanks for putting them out, they're greatly appreciated. You have the best demeanor, delivery, and content in the fishing biz in my humble opinion. Keep up the good work & we'll keep watching..!
Well done Jason I just got back from fishing off shore today. Eckroth Bottoms Missouri River Was a memory from childhood when my grandpa started me fishing in the Mouse River as a kid. Keep it simple....
I am going to be in Winnipeg, Canada, this summer, probably in June. It looks like there are a number of potential riverbank "spots" in the near vicinity. Since I'll have limited time, no experience fishing for walleye*, no specific gear*, and am fishing for table fare**, I am thinking my best bet is probably locally purchased nightcrawlers or minnows. I DO have some weighted jigs (hook plus weight only) both painted and plain lead. Will there be good numbers of walleye in the rivers at that time & location? Any further pointers? *No walleye in my home area (too far south.) **I'm not worried too much about deep hook sets as I am fishing for table fare. Thanks!
There is some excellent walleye fishing around Winnipeg. Basically every tributary or river that flows into Lake Winnipeg will have a walleye population. There will be some fish in the rivers in June. On small rivers, focus on any spot below a dam, lock or rapid. The Assissiboine River is excellent. I would check in with the bait shops.
Assume many of these fish come out of Ashtabula but there has to be some fish that live in the river all year especially when the river was high. Might be different this summer as low as the water is.
Question: are Walleye bottom feeding types (meaning swim baits and jigs only?) or will they go for top-water lures as well like Whopper Ploppers? Most of my tackle box is tailored to Pike (because here in Saskatchewan, pike, some walleye and the occasional perch are all we get.)
Does jig fishing work in muddy water? My local lake Upper Lake Mary, Flagstaff, AZ, is very rocky & has a permanent visibility of about 1ft-to-chocolate milk... walleye & northern pike, primarily. They say there's some trout, crappie & a few bass in there too, but I've never caught any. So far, I have caught all my fish(pics on my channel community page!) on crankbaits, minnow lures & spinnerbaits. Caught a walleye about as long as my arm 2 days ago on a spinnerbait in about 4ft of water. I grew up bass fishing in Oklahoma, so walleye & pike are a new thing for me. I am trying to learn all I can.
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors yeah you'd mentioned that in the video. Looks like a fun river, you get into many smallmouth and pike in there? Granted things change over the years.
@@jonc.5310 when I was a kid, the river was really low so we mostly caught suckers, bullheads, perch, creek chubs and pumpkinseed sunfish but we did catch some small pike and a few walleyes. When the river started running higher, we started seeing more walleye. I know people that get a few smallmouth today out of the river. They just started stocking smallmouth in Darling when I was a kid.
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors thanks for the info! Heard word of some big pike on the Souris between the dam and town, will hit it with the kayak once we (eventually) ice off. I really dig your channel, watching the Audubon smallmouth video right now, loving it! Take care and tight lines.
Some of my better walleye (22-25 inch fish) have come from fishing from shore. Mid summer bite off a point just wadding out a little with a Mr twister. Can be tough but get decent fish when you get them.
I’ve been fishing for at least 2 hours and haven’t caught anything in the last 3 days. Done every piece of advice for onshore fishing since I don’t have a boat. It’s really starting to annoy me since I feel like I have a really good idea on fish migration and places to go. Just no bites. I love fishing but what’s the point when no fish bite? Got at least 20 different jigs and colors too.
@@JimmyGambles-t5u no this river is in ND but the rivers that dump into places like Green Bay and Saginaw Bay are full of walleye and offer great shore fishing.
I fish the river by me all the time or the Pier. The river I can hide under the bridge if it rains and there are not a lot of fishermen their. I use a 1/4 jig and a swim bait or a ring worm. Don't catch much but I enjoy the relax time.
I try to keep in mind where the sun will be. If Im shore fishing in the hot summer Ill try to side on the side of the river with the shade. Some spots are only good in the morning, others only in the afternoon. Buy a cheapo cooler bag from the dollar store and bring frozen bottles of water.
Awesome video never did walleye before because we don’t have many of them here but it looks so fun they fight good where we live it is more bass and trout still really exciting though😊
It can be an expensive form of fishing due to the fact that lose bunch of jig heads and lures on the other hand i caught a 39 inch Walleye not long ago from shore. Fun times
Cool video, I did get a laugh though. You don't need expensive boats or electronics, but seeing as most of the river is on private land you do need to be a land owner!
You do need permission on private property but there are many property owners to ask. Just like getting permission to hunt, be respectful. There are also some great public locations especially below some of the dams and you can also canoe or kayak.
Caught my first walleye today
Hell yeah dude. What’d you use? Im just getting started w Walleyes
I've never caught a walleye but I Caught my first sand bass today:)
Hell ya! Congratulations (belated) hope you’ve caught some more since!
Congrats. I can’t wait till I catch my first Walleye

Love catching walleyes from shore. Thank You for sharing
Was out today caught a few, Bobby and minnow in an eddy always does the trick
Grew up near to lake darling and the mouse river..the number of walleyes I’ve caught from shore is 100x what I’ve caught from a boat in this system

We have caught a few walleye over the years on top water by accident fishing for smallmouth but most of the time, they are on or near the bottom.
All I can catch while shore fishing is big cat fish or small any other fish. Any tips?
Love the shout-out to Minot!
This looks similar to the area by the abandoned bridge neer Cooperstown. Odd that UA-cam suggested a video so close to where I am.

We find that jigs work well in dirty water and often have the best luck with either bright colors like chartreuse or really dark colors.
