I like to think of Egg as one of the best kings (in terms of character / suitability / make up) whose reign came up massively short of his potential. His tumultuous reign was mostly due to factors beyond Egg's control - long winter , famine , numerous rebellions , considerable pushback on his reforms , disastrous betrothal situations with his children etc. With his life among the smallfolk / life experiences and reformist mindset , def a what could have been if Egg's reign would have been less eventful and challenging. Though very GRRM-like to put such a promising monarch in such a difficult situation.
With SH def many possibilities , as tinfoil as it is , as mentioned in this stream never know if there was a successful dragon hatching and the fallout came as a result / sabotage. And despite how GRRM-like it would be , would be truly heart breaking for Egg to have gotten that desperate (due to his challenging reign) especially resistance to his reforms and / or obsessed by prophecy to possibly be willing to sacrifice anyone / go to certain lengths with the SH process. I am doubtful with that as of now and despite some trying to sway Egg away from his attempts there may have been some poisonous counsel and sabotage at work with SH but tbd. Hope we can get more clarity there via GRRM sooner rather than later.
Didn't realize I was a few mins behind on the live, thanks robert and mods for another great one!!
Love this topic Robert! I'm so excited to see what will be revealed about Egg through the years
Another great episode!
You "spoiling" the videos you're working on just makes me want to see them :)
I know it's a little off-topic seeing as it's concerning Dunk not Egg, but I've been wondering about something: Do people think that Dunk was made a minor noble, or landed knight, before he rose to the kingsguard?
The reason for me wondering is Brienne. It seems fairly settled that she is a descendent of Dunk. However, there's a problem with this in that she is a part of a noble family. Having kids out of wedlock is a big scandal for nobles, if Brienne was descended from a bastard we would've heard about it. There are plenty of people throwing all sorts of insults at her, and plenty of people would be aware of a heritage like that. So why don't we ever hear it?
It seems to me there's only two possibilities:
1: Dunk had an affair with a noble lady, and to avoid a scandal (especially for Aegon if people knew his favourite honourable knight had done such a thing) she was quickly married off (probably to a Tarth) and her husband claimed Dunk's bastard as his own (or maybe even not knowing it wasn't his). As Dunk abandoned his own arms and shield to take up the white it would be understandable if they ended up in possession of his lover (in Tarth)
2: Dunk had a small moment as a legitimate minor noble, married and had a daughter. His wife then died, freeing him to take kingsguard vows. The legitimate child of a famous knight, especially if he had already made lord commander when she was due to be married, would be quite a catch for a family, even more so if they thought it would bring favour with the king. Dunks daughter, or granddaughter, would end up a Tarth, and as his only descendent would keep his shield in the family.
What do people think?
My thinking is that Dunk had a child (bastard or otherwise), who then married legitimately into the Tarth family. Its possible that since Tarth is an island, it has a low-enough population that smallfolk and nobles marrying is less uncommon there than on the mainland.
@@Magmafrost13 I don't remember reading that about the Tarths, any chance you could tell me where that idea comes from please?
In my mind at least, the population of the island doesn't matter that much these days. Maybe in the past it did when interaction with other places was more limited, but after the conquest the whole place was opened up. So by the time of the stories there's no reason why the Tarths would need to marry smallfolk, there's a country full of other noble families to pick from. And due to the others shunning smallfolk it's easy to imagine how they would feel about other nobles doing it, especially with Brienne where they'd use anything to insult her.
Also, bastardy is bastardy. Unless it's Dorne, no noble house would want the scandal of marrying a bastard. There's always the possibility that Aegon legitimised them, but (I may be wrong) that is only done for a bastard from a noble house to give them the house name.
And it's very recent that there was a huge scandal about the heir to the thrown marrying a low born, resulting in him being completely removed from the line of succession. Hard to imagine that just a decade or two later that anyone more than the most minor house would do such a thing.
Of course, like I said, that's what I have in mind, I'm ready to be disproven, which is the point of me posting :)
You have to wonder, while it may be tinfoily; whether or not Aegon V and Bloodraven had conversations about TPTWP. We know Aemon and Rhaegar do later on. If Bloodraven had surmised at this point that northern blood/Old God blood was needed in the line, they may have thought that the Blackwood line was "it" and they merely needed to fulfill the rest. Likewise, it may have been discussed that in order for this to happen, BR himself needed to be at the Wall, or already knew he had to go beyond the Wall to find the three-eyed crow of the time. If you start from the premise that this was part of the fulfilling of the prophecy, some of this could all seriously have just been a mummer's farce to get him there, all while having a fairly easy "resolution" to the Blackfyre issue.
Then you also have to wonder if Bloodraven arrived at Stark blood only after becoming the Three-Eyed Crow currently?
I love egg
This is sort of off topic, but what if Azor Ahai stabbing his wife with Lightbringer to access its “fire magic” is maybe a metaphor for the dragon egg hatching ritual.
Like the sacrifice of a loved one through fire(Khal Drogo’s Pyre for Dani, Egg’s children in Summer Hall for his attempt, and the original Azor Ahai’s wife with lightbringer ) to access some a fire power to end the long night(dragons and then that original flaming sword)
TLDR Lightbringer was a Dragon?
Baby Maegor is such a fascinating character. I like to think that he's Craster!
Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks for a fantastic live stream. Road tripping from Bendigo to Point Lonsdale (2.5hrs Aus) and loved ever min of the trip (care of IGD Live in car entertainment).
P.s Egg has an Obama stint, with that Medicaid not getting through congress, and Trump to follow 🤣😬
I always felt the apparent failure of summerhall was further evidence of the theory that after the Dance, the Maesters poisoned the remaining eggs. If you want an in-universe answer, anyway.
Ie, if Summerhall was done with the eggs that became Dany's, that were spirited away to Essos long before the Dance, they probably wouldve hatched.
Aegon Targaryen the 5th one of my favorite Kings because he understood that Aenys Blackfyre came peacefully and was killed for it thankfully first thing he did as King was make sure Bloodraven was punished but even at the cold end of the world the snake still slithering his corruption everywhere but he now looks the monster he always was.
Egg wasn’t a great king, but a good king-and honestly, that’s better. Maybe instead of kings like Jaehaerys who caused harm in the pursuit of greatness, the realm could have benefitted from unambiguous rulers who just wanted to do the right thing. In my eyes, that makes Egg the king the Seven Kingdoms deserved most.
2:10:00
Maybe not the lords, but the Maesters might have helped the Tragedy at Summerhall to happen.
I vote we continue to call it "tweeting". No reason the unserious man-child running the place should get to change how we talk as well! (re: 43:04)
I would say building space ships, electric cars satellite internet systems, and solar panels while building and running 6 companies is fairly serious. 😂

@@TommyBombadillio agreed! like him or not, he IS serious,
It always surprises me that George tries to get away with two successive generations of incest without making Rheagar, Viserys, and Dani demonstrably more insane than their father. Although, I guess the jury is still out on Dani.
Ummm there was more than two successive generations of incest in the Targaryen dynasty. The entire family, going back to the doom of Valaria, has brother marrying sister etc.
Targaryen incest doesn't cause madness. Only Aerion Brightflame and Rhaegel are truly mad. Aerys II's madness is caused by his horrific torment during his captivity at Duskendale. Before that he was only eccentric. Baelor the Blessed was a religious zealot. Maegor the Cruel was just plain evil.
@@julieloucalcote1368 not 2 successive generations of direct sibling incest in an unbroken line without any new genetic material introduced. This is clearly the most concentrated occurrence that I'm aware of.
@@Aewon84 possibly, but George hasn't confirmed exactly how much the rules of their genetics differ from our real world genetics. Typical GRRM, give us a taste and leave us guessing. LOL
