I was in high school when I first saw Kansas in 1975....they opened for Aerosmith.....I was a die hard Aerosmith fan and had never heard of Kansas. Well that all changed because Kansas blew Tyler and his crew off the stage that night.
Carry On Wayward Son" is a song by American rock band Kansas, released from the band's fourth studio album Leftoverture (1976). Written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, the song became the band's first Top 40 single, reaching No. 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1977. The song has since remained a classic rock radio staple and a signature song for the band.
Kansas came out of Topeka, Kansas. They were the third iteration of a band named Kansas - all the others got left behind. Look for music from Proto-Kaw, a band Livgren formed in the late 90s early 2000s - they were the guys from the second iteration of Kansas who got left behind. He managed to put most of them back together and they were fantastic. Unfortunately they had problems - Dan Wright went into rehab, and Kerry Livgren suffered a massive stroke - but they still managed to put out four amazing CDs. The guy with the moustache playing the organ and providing vocal leads was Steve Walsh, arguably the BEST male vocalist of his time. The guy with "the hair" was Robby Steinhart, who also did vocals and provided violin in the group. The front guitarist is Kerry Livgren, who also played keys. He did a bulk of their writing during their heyday. He still runs a music studio in Berryton, KS just south of Topeka.
This song was written about the PTSD that soldiers return home from war. Specifically, the Vietnam War. Think about all the chord progressions, the violence, passion, fear, hallucinations, drugs, and anger, insomnia that it represents. Then link it to the words." Carry On My Wayward son. There'll Be Peace When You Are Done. Lay Your Weary Head to Rest, Dont You Cry No More" Some in the band say it is a " spiritual" trip.....yeah from the insanity if war. Really hear the lyrics....and tempo and chord changes. It will speak the truth.
Went to a STYX/KANSAS concert, with the thrill of seeing STYX. I left in awe of KANSAS and how fantastic they are live....holy crap!! STEVE WALSH never stopped from the time they started....to the very end......INCREDIBLE!!😱❤❤
I was born in Nov. 1959, so I was 16 when this came out. It was all over the radio. Steve Walsh is a beast playing the keyboards *and* the bongos *and* singing! RIP Robbie Steinhart.
I was in high school when this song came out. That and a ton of other great music that’s now “classic rock”. It’s a deep rabbit hole you’re going down. Enjoy the ride.
Kansas was my favorite group when I was in high school. This song is from their 4th album, Leftoverture, which came out in the latter part of 1976, maybe October. It’s the album that put them on the map. I saw them twice before this album, in July 1975 on the Song for America tour, and on February 22, 1976 on the Masque tour (at Villanova University). Saw them on this tour, at the Tower Theatre, on 12-30-1976. Saw them at the Allentown State Fairgrounds on 8-5-1977 and one final time on the Point of Know Return tour at the Spectrum on 12-16-1977. Steve Walsh is one of the greatest vocalists in rock, and I was a big fan of the drummer, Phil Ehart. Robbie Steinhart on violin and vocals, and the genius behind the band, who wrote most of their songs, played guitar and keyboards, Kerry Livgren. Great live band. If you get a chance, check out the live version of “The Pinnacle” from Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.” Steve walsh on the keyboards and vocals is at the top of his game.
New sub, old hippie from the 70s here. I was about ur age when this came out, some great memories. They were a garage band that everyone fell in love with and now span decades with great music. Much like many bands from the 70s. Back then we didnt have cable, internet, social media, cell phones, etc. If u wanted to follow ur fav bands u had to literally follow them. So we lived for live concerts or live performances Saturday nights with Midnight Special, Soul Train, etc. Thanx so much, nothing rocked like the 70s. Take care, Peace
Obviously Prolific Musicians They were considered one of the most "TECHNICALLY" Talented bands of the time....Beloved by many...I saw them in 1983......Wonderful performance......Steve Walsh's lead vocals, and piano is just amazing
I saw them in 1981. They were amazing. I was able to meet them. Awesome dudes! The guy with long hair never wears shoes when performing. He also plays the violin beautifully! Released in '76.
Lead singer, electric keyboard, congas is Steve Walsh. Guitarist with straight blonde hair, also plays piano in this song is Kerry Livgren. Kerry also wrote the song. The hairy guy was their violinist, tambourine player and backup vocalist.
Kerry Livgren wrote this song *in a night.* He almost didn't pitch it to his band mates because they were finished with the album. The drummer says that he remembers he was breaking down his drum set when Kerry said, 'hey guys, I eh, have another song.' They said that when they got the record back from production and they listened to the intro to this song, they knew they'd done something special. This song rocketed them to fame. They were professional musicians long before they did this song but basically nobody knew them. AFTER this song, _everybody_ knew them.
Just as an aside, the blond guy playing the Strat is Kerry Livgren, and he lives about 5-ish miles SE of where I live. Kinda cool. My nephew likes to tell people I have jammed with members of Kansas but that's not true. I have jammed with people who probably jammed with members of Kansas, though, for what that's worth. :)
I saw them live on Long Island years ago. The singer with dark hair was showing off by doing hand stands on the keyboard while playing upside down. He was fit and he was talented.
Six members of the band: Robby Steinhardt (great hair, beard, and moustache): vocals, tambourine, (also he was a classically trained violinist) Steve Walsh (Energizer bunny): lead singer, keyboards, conga drums, and...well, everything Phil Ehart: drums, (and offstage he was the leader of the band) Kerry Livgren (blond hair): keyboards, guitar, songwriter (He wrote this one in basically one night. Right before they went into the studio to record it.) Rich Williams (white tuxedo): guitar Dave Hope (very cool old fashioned moustache): bass
The guy with the tambourine, also plays violin- back-up singer. The guitarist with blonde hair wrote most of Kansas' songs, check out their " Leftoverture " album it went 4x platinum
Saw this band live in the early 80s as a teenager. They sounded exactly like this video. Amazing. Still one of my favorites. Dust In The Wind should be your next reaction.
Kansas was two bands combined. This was a monster hit in 76. Played by HS marching bands across decades when the football team is behind. They had only one other smash hit Dust in the Wind, more subdued.
I love these guys. This song is a Timeless Classic!! Robby Steinhardt had the most Awesomest hair. I'm sure tons of girls wanted to run their fingers through it. Lol. Robby Steinhardt was a great vocalist and played violin, viola, tamborine. Sadly, we lost Robby in 2021. RIP Robby.
Had to be around 77 because high school was on fire 🔥 with some great rock and I definitely remember being zoned out after skipping 4th period and listening to this 😊
They came from Topeka Kansas, which is about half an hour from where I live. In fact one of my roommates in college when I first got there had some of Kansas' hand-me-down band equipment Incorporated into his massive stereo system in our room, lol. They have so much great stuff. Mid-to-late 70s prog rock.
One of prog rocks top bands, but often forgotten. Saw them live in their prime. A then unknown Cheap Trick opened up for them . An amazing concert! The facial hair guy is Robbie Steinhardt, now passed (RIP) Brilliant harmonies and a mean violist. Im an identical twin too btw!
🔥🔥🔥So happy u younger guys r discovering the masterpieces that came out of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s! Soundtrack of them good ol’ days! Please check out as much as u can. U won’t be disappointed! I’m in my 60’s now but not a day goes by that there’s not some kind of music in my house! And now my son and granddaughter r accomplished musicians! I love most everything!
They're darn good for one thing. This is my favorite song. As a fellow curly thick hair person, this is how it looks when you brush it out. When wet it's in ringlets. I thank God I'm not a man with a beard as well.
The lead singer's name is Steve Walsh. One of the most powerful, controlled and pitch-perfect voices in rock history. Hard choice between him and Tommy Shaw of Styx. The guy on the tamborine usually plays violin but since there's no violin in this song... If you want to hear a phenomenal piece of music by Kansas with powerful lyrics, multiple instrumental segments, signatures changes, fantastic keyboard and guitar work, plus one of the best drum solos you'll ever hear...check out: "Incomudro - Hymn to the Atman" from their Song for America album.
They are from Kansas, hence the name. Songs to checkout are Questions of my childhood, Song for America, Miracles out of nowhere, Point of no return, What's on my mind, The Wall
They are from Topeka Ks. I'm from Hays Ks. They used to play here often in the 70s... They Got their BIG BREAK in Ellinwood Ks at The Town Hall building one night...The Big New York Call...
Miracles Out Of Nowhere is one of the best rock band documentaries. I highly recommend it for an insight into how a band was discovered and the creative processes behind the evolution to major success. They were literally a band traveling around west Kansas in a bus.
KANSAS, "CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON". The 1976 monster hit, that 47 years later is probably one of the most iconic songs ever performed. Actually if you would take the time to listen to the whole album. You would realize what gem, that "LEFT OVERTURE" Album was, and is in my mind. Yes they are from Kansas. I listen to this song every time I see a new reaction, and a smile is brought to everyone who experienced this magnificent Masterpiece.
My favorite song when I was 16 years old. Spectacular.. I didn't know the lead singer played 2 instruments. Very talented band. I'm nearly 64. We didn't have internet or technology..so I didn't know until this day lead singer played 2 instruments. Still loving this song . nearly 47 years old. Your right the song never goes out of style. Stood the test of time.
You guys do great reactions. You are really missing out by sharing the earbuds though. You should have your own sets of headphones to really appreciate the music. Keep rockin!
The band you're listening to is called Kansas, but many call it Kansas III (for a good reason). Two of the key members of the band, Don Montre and Kevin Livgren, were originally in a band from Topeka, KS called Reasons Why. They left that band and joined with Lynn Meredith and Dan Wright to form a band called Saratoga. They then changed their name to Kansas (Kansas I) and added some local talent from a rival Topeka band called White Clover, Phil Ehart on drums, and Dave Hope on bass. This iteration of Kansas didn't last long, with Ehart, Hope and others deciding to take off and reform White Clover. Kansas I, meanwhile, replaced Ehart with Zeke Lowe, and Hope by Don Mikinski. This group was known as Kansas II by many, and eventually folded. Meanwhile, White Clover under Ehart and Hope, added Steve Walsh, Rich Williams, Robby Steinhardt, and others (including members of Kansas II), and eventually got a record contract, changing their name to Kansas (Kansas III), which is the band most know as Kansas...😏
I'm thankful for young people like you two who get into this music and appreciate it, keeping it alive. The 60s/70s/80s were the golden era of music. Being born in the 60s I luckily got to grow up with it all. So lucky!!! I think it's obvious that most music today is objectively way worse, lol (yes, I'm biased, but it's true, lolo)
The song reminds me of the Netflix series Supernatural, it is used a few times...Supernatural has an EPIC Musical soundtrack...I bet you guys would love that series. 2 brothers fighting supernatural evil.
They are from Kansas. You'll find that most bands that name themselves after specific places, are from those places. Boston, Chicago, etc. This song came out in 1976.
From what guitarist Rich Williams said this entire song was recorded in one take. It most likely wasn't the first take, but it's a single cut, start to finish. They had no looping gear, no tape over, no synthetic instruments or autotune. They could only afford a straight up studio. Nothing fancy.
Kansas were from Kansas, sometimes considered a Christian Rock Band. They were America's answer to Britain's YES AND ELP. They were a Progressive Rock Band. They were from the farm country, nonone was ever going to discover them. Someone got word to some record execs in New York and they decided to go to Kansas. The band thought if they come out here in see these little rinky dink crowds they play for they would leave. So the band rented a hall the night the execs came into town, they charge everybody like 25 cent to get in with free beer......they packed the hall, the record execs were impressed and signed them thinking they were quite popular, most of the people at the hall were there for the free beer!
If this really is your first Kansas keep going. They have many great tunes. And don't forget to check out Styx, and Boston. And that only scratches the surface of 70s and 80s music.
Growing up as a child in the 70's, this kind of music had a profound effect on me.
Same here..
I loved it and still do 😊👍!
Me too !! The best time of my life ☮ and 💜 friends

Play free bird the greatest classic rock song of all time!!!!!!!!
@@davidnorris3124 What do wrestlers from the 70-80's have to do with anything 🤔? JK 😂
Classic rock sucks. But this doesn't because it isn't classic rock, it's prog.

They are well known as the unofficial theme to the TV show Supernatural.
They 70s and 80s were rich in talent. Way more than today
Of course you know nothing about any of the rock bands of today. But you are an expert. If you say there aren't any you are ignorant
Many of us grew up in this era in music history. It will never happen again.
Not really. You're just displeased because music continued to change and grow. You and Don McLean.
For sure, all you need now is a look and a gimmick. They can make you sound good even if you’re tone deaf.
@fridaylong2812 today's artist's are standing on the shoulders of giants.

You can not go wrong with the raw sounds of the 60s and 70s.. PURE talent like nothing out there today
The group turns 50 this year. You might do probably their best known song "Dust In The Wind" next.
in a cool era of music. Kansas, Styx, R.E.O., Journey, Rush, you get it, good times.
We have a ton of Rush on the channel! Check out the playlist!
Still the greatest music era ever 👍

You need to do the whole album, Leftoverture. It's Kansas's Dark Side of the Moon.
Sorry, you "need to" meant as a suggestion, not a demand. 😅

Take a listen to “Dust in the wind “ Great song! There is also a documentary about Kansas on UA-cam 👍🏻
Will be reacting to this song soon!!
Way back when it wasn't called a playlist, it was a mix tape. When I put this song on a mix tape I always included the next track "The Wall".
70's classic rock, I grew up with this. It don't get any better!!

From what guitarist Rich Williams said this entire song was recorded in one take. It most likely wasn't the first take, but it's a single cut, start to finish. They had no looping gear, no tape over, no synthetic instruments or autotune. They could only afford a straight up studio. Nothing fancy.
Pure Raw Talent!
In those days it was not unusual to name the Band for where you all are from.😊
Most songs have a ‘hook’, this song is ‘all hooks’!!
This album was made and released in 1976
You guys should listen to freebird and simple man by lynyrd skynyrd. The 70s Lynyrd Skynyrd with Ronnie Van Zant! Great music!
Love those songs; another great one is "Call Me The Breeze"! Can't go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd!
Kansas was great. Epic. Along with Styx, Foriegner, The Moody Blues and Boston. They sold out arenas all over the country.
Kerry Livgren branched to Christian rock. Bands like us noticed!
His guitar work on the “Rejoice” album by Second Chapter of Acts is incredible….
The group IS from Kansas, and the first time I heard it was 1975-1976.
They got so many more good songs y’all are in for a treat
Yup,it's a banger! Rock on!🤘😁
If this really is your first Kansas keep going. They have many great tunes. And don't forget to check out Styx, and Boston. And that only scratches the surface of 70s and 80s music.
Kansas: Miracles Out of Nowhere | Full Documentary.....this is on UA-cam. A REALLY good docu on them.
Back in the day we had “bands”. Every musician was amazing and the live concerts were often better than the studio version.
Listening to this great song with little earbuds?? That's like watching 2001 on an i-phone.
1977 I was in 7th grade saw them in 80 and 2009 Alaska
Have you heard their song Dust in the Wind?
Reacting to Dust In The Wind this week!
