@@taniele84 Hi, this song came out in 1978. They were still putting 8 track players in cars although cassettes were more popular by then. Internet did not exist so there was no Sirius, Pandora or You Tube. The number 1 way to listen to music was radio. As a 22 y/o dude in '78 I listened to a couple of the local FM rock stations. When Dust In The Wind came out it fit into multiple categories and was played on multiple stations and played and played and played some more. DITW is a very good song and I know that people love it. I'm a pretty big Kansas fan but prefer the long epic proggy tunes more. Those were not radio friendly in '78. Sorry for the rambling.
Same. I tend to find myself skipping this song when it comes up on my Spotify thinking it's old hat. It's been a while since I've really appreciated it.
As someone who grew up on a steady diet of classic rock, it was incredibly entertaining to see this. Fresh ears really help me reflect on how amazing this song actually is.
My high school sweetheart bought this album for me on my 16th. Birthday. We were together through high school and beyond until Hunningtons desease took him from me. Thank you for a awesome reaction and the memories ❤
This is why I like watching reactions from guys like you. You take a song I've probably heard a thousand times and made it fresh again. Your energy and enthusiasm for this song is infectious.
You guys were born in the wrong time! The 70s were so musically diverse in the rock genre, with so many phenomenal people, I'm still digesting it all, 40 years later.
Technology doesn't replace creativity or talent. Kansas was from Lawrence. I bet they know the club they are referring to. Having gone to KU I know I do.
I have said it before and I will say it again the 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were a veritable cornucopia of musical styles and genres and some great bands that refused to be pigeonholed..
Carry on my wayward son is played as the intro to every season finale of the TV show Supernatural and also in the 200th episode they do a Supernatural Musical that plays this song in a new and interesting way.
I say this almost every time, and I'll keep on saying it. I get so much joy from watching you guys appreciating and enjoying music that, for many people, we've heard all of our lives. I love your open mindedness, love for great music - no matter its roots, and willingness to stretch your musical tastes. Thanks, again, gents. So much fun. Well done. 🙌 The Jeffersons!! 😂
thank you Kerry , to me this an homage to my son who left home when he was 16. He was extremely rebellious and ran away. I miss him so much and have nothing but love for him. I hope he finds the love that's all around him that's recognizable to every one but him. Nicholas, you are loved...always remember that
This made me cry. I have a 16 year old son. I can't imagine not seeing him every day. Have you spoken to Nicholas, do you know where he is? I hope so much that he comes back into your life soon, whole and happy.
Rob Taylor There is always hope. My wife has a saying in our kitchen that says “not all who wander are lost”. Sometimes that’s just the journey people have to take to find their way back home. Hang in there.
I know this is classic rock, but I feel like you guys haven't done much Metalcore and definitely not Hardcore. Metalcore August Burns Red - Majoring in the Minors or Mariana's Trench Killswitch Engage - Fixation on The Darkness or Life to Lifeless Parkway Drive - Breaking Point or Five Months As I Lay Dying - The Sound of Truth or Within Destruction All that Remains - Six or The Air That I Breathe Stick To Your Guns - Bringing You Down or Where The Sun Never Sleeps Hardcore Coldworld - Refuse to Lose or Cold World Bad Seed - Real Rain Pours or Through My Hands Biohazard - Black and White and Red all Over or Business Trapped Under Ice - Jail or Pleased to Meet you Turnstile - Can't Deny It or New Rules Dead End Path - Stay up Stay Alive or End on End Have Heart - Armed With A Mind or The Machinist Thank you
Steely Dan is a band you've got to check out. Their songwriting is superb, their attention to detail is unmatched, and their roster of session musicians is the best in music. Peg or Kid Charlemagne are both good first choices.
Wow you guys got to this song so much faster than I expected, and at the beginning of the video when you mentioned how you were waiting for a classic rock banger to hit you I thought "just wait until the end of this song" haha. Great video, I'm glad you guys seem to love this song as much as I do. This was the main song I wanted you guys to get to for classic rock week but I've seen some other people mention "Chicago - 25 Or 6 To 4" and "Deep Purple - Burn" so I just wanted to say those songs would be great for classic rock week as well. And of course I'm going to leave my main suggestion for when you guys do metal again. "Cult Of Luna - Nightwalkers" is probably going to be instant playlist material for you guys.
A fellow "Wheathead" here, I'm soo glad they enjoyed it as much as they did. I agree on your other suggestions too! Hopefully they will (and others) explore more Kansas, as they were soo MUCH more than their "Hit Singles" and were an epic "Progressive Rock" band.
I scoped it out. Sorry man, but that Cult of Luna song is pretty repetitive, slow, and dis-interesting. I'm not sure it would be for them, but hey I'm not them. Just my unsolicited input
Robert Fripp tends to have a problem with their stuff being posted by other people (even if it's just album covers) so it might not be a good idea for the channel. If they do decide on King Crimson, I'd like them to do 21st Century Schizoid Man to just to see if they recognize it.
The intermet is a weird place . This os a somg i have had in my life since i was a baby . To hear you guys get joy from it is just a good feeling , even though i onviously dont know you guys hahahah .keep up the good work fellas !
As a Supernatural fan I really get emotional hearing this song. The show is on the last season and normally is played as the opener for the season finale. Which means, the next time I'm going to hear it in the show is going to be the final episode. Yeah, it's great song, although I think the changes in tempo occur a bit too frequently but that's criticism on a very high level. It's a near-perfect song. And Steve Walsh's clean and clear vocals are just incredible. You hear him sing Carry On My Wayward son without any instrument and the song immediately comes alive in your head. It's catchy, it's funky, it grooves, it's emotional, it give you everything you'd want in a classic rock song.
this song got renewed life as being the season finale song for pretty much every season to many fans this song is the real supernatural theme which is great got my daughter into the song as she became a fan through me as she started watching it because of me and fell in love with the song lol
My late father was a Vietnam Veteran and this was a very introspective song for him. The lyrics meant a lot to him and said that at times they described his feelings upon returning home.
There are a TON of amazing bands from Lawrence, KS. Ironically, "Carry On Wayward Son" is sort of the theme song to the TV series "Supernatural", and the main characters of the show are from Lawrence.
One of the members of the band was fe Lawrence Kinda sad that his only memory of Lawrence and going to the Martin Logan factory was Bada Bing. Lawrence is a kick-ass town. Greatest Lawrence band ever was Blue Riddim Band
Love watching your rock and metal reactions. I've heard many of the songs a thousand times before, but you help make it fresh, like I can experience it again for the first time along with you.
Steve perry, bruce Dickinson, Ronny James dio, rob halford, king diamond, Mikael Akerfeldt, those are some of my favorite and in my opinion the best singers in rock/metal
This song was written in one night. Even though they have been a band for quite a while when this song was made, it was actually their first hit record that took them to stardom.
I almost envy you guys for being able to REALLY listen to songs like this for the first time. Keep up the good work and give Savatage a listen, Hall of the Mountain King.
Some Thoughts -I agree, Song for America, anyone? But, don’t you agree Kansas is more of a blues ock band with long songs than a prog band? Kansas is so heavily influenced by melody and the blues end of rock that I have never really thought of them in the same place musically as King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, Marillion, or even Rush.
I have heard people compare Symphony X with Kansas and from a point of view I understand them. There is these time signatures going on and some of the keyboard sounds are a bit similar eh?
I love seeing the reactions of first time listeners to songs I have known for so long! It brings a renewed appreciation for tunes that I have known so well for so long. I dig it, it's like watching someones face as they unwrap a gift. PS You may want to pull your mics in and down so they could be pointed at your mouths when you speak toward each other, which of course you do, since you are talking to each other :). Right now when you speak to each other your voices go right past the mic instead of "into" it. In other words, pull the mics in and down (so they don't block your faces) and point them up and slightly out and you audio will be more consistent. Right now your voice levels drop out as you turn your heads to speak to each other. Dig the show. Enjoy the music!
Man, love how you guys have an authentic response to great music! I've been a Kansas fan since 1976 (the year Leftoverture was released). Their music doesn't age, it's SO timeless. @@kevinlay4745 I can't hear it without yelling "You're my boy Blue!" Lol
Kevin Lay Overplayed? I had to find it all on my own. Never knew of it at all. And had to play it all on my own just to hear it ever since then. Guess it depends on your generation.
George getting the holy spirit at 16:20 is the best reaction since Ryan's freakout over Rooster. This whole video is super fun.
Lost In Vegas: We're waiting for a banger
Kansas: Hold Our Beer
I miss read it. My bad.
😂
When you have heard this song a million times like myself you truly forget how 🔥🔥🔥 it is. Timeless!
That's exactly what I was thinking. I take so much for granted when it comes to the music I grew up with.
Yes this 👆 I prob heard this when I was 10, no clue what it was about, just sounded good.
Awesome assessment of our precious, time period!
It STILL surprises me the breadth and the depth!
Back when we had straight up Rock and Roll . Something we just don’t have now days.
For real though😎
Well done. 🙌
The Jeffersons!! 😂
Hey Amy!!
When I was younger I got to see Kansas in concert. The concert had Heart as their opening act. One of the best concerts I ever saw. great choice.
Damn. Incredible duo. Heart is awesome too.
I have seen this band 3 times. Absolute musical genius
I have seen this band 3 times. Absolute musical genius
Wow, would love to see that
Was that at the municipal auditorium in downtown Nashville in the late 80s?
thank you Kerry , to me this an homage to my son who left home when he was 16. He was extremely rebellious and ran away. I miss him so much and have nothing but love for him. I hope he finds the love that's all around him that's recognizable to every one but him. Nicholas, you are loved...always remember that
I left home around that age. I was gone for good while. I came back! Good luck!
Prayers that he returns soon❤️
This made me cry. I have a 16 year old son. I can't imagine not seeing him every day. Have you spoken to Nicholas, do you know where he is? I hope so much that he comes back into your life soon, whole and happy.
Bless you, Nicholas.
Rob Taylor There is always hope. My wife has a saying in our kitchen that says “not all who wander are lost”. Sometimes that’s just the journey people have to take to find their way back home. Hang in there.
I'll keep it rolling.. Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' For You or Fire of Unknown Origin
I know this is classic rock, but I feel like you guys haven't done much Metalcore and definitely not Hardcore.
Metalcore
August Burns Red - Majoring in the Minors or Mariana's Trench
Killswitch Engage - Fixation on The Darkness or Life to Lifeless
Parkway Drive - Breaking Point or Five Months
As I Lay Dying - The Sound of Truth or Within Destruction
All that Remains - Six or The Air That I Breathe
Stick To Your Guns - Bringing You Down or Where The Sun Never Sleeps
Hardcore
Coldworld - Refuse to Lose or Cold World
Bad Seed - Real Rain Pours or Through My Hands
Biohazard - Black and White and Red all Over or Business
Trapped Under Ice - Jail or Pleased to Meet you
Turnstile - Can't Deny It or New Rules
Dead End Path - Stay up Stay Alive or End on End
Have Heart - Armed With A Mind or The Machinist
Thank you
Thin Lizzy, rainbow and T Rex
Burning For You is their best!
Hot Rails to Hell
God damn I want them to hear this!
Love your understanding of music!!
Great song!! Every Supernatural fan has a special place in his heart for this one 😁
For sure!!
Yes!! High school and Supernatural!! ❤❤❤
Yes indeed! ❤️
George: Why don't they relax?
Kansas: Cocaine, George. Cocaine
We don't do much Coke here in Kansas
😂😂😂😂
Steely Dan is a band you've got to check out. Their songwriting is superb, their attention to detail is unmatched, and their roster of session musicians is the best in music. Peg or Kid Charlemagne are both good first choices.
truly, they're on another level.
Reelin In The Years, Don’t Take Me Alive, Josie...so many good choices!!
no static at all
Deacon Blues
no no, please do Aja
“Night Moves” Bob Seger if you haven’t already heard, you are welcome.
One of my all time favorites
Just going through all the songs that show up in supernatural
Have always loved this song! Incredible musicians, vocals and transitions!!!
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Great song from one of the best rock bands ever.
You should do a prog-rock week too dudes.
Definitely Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4. I remember playing that in pep band in high school
"Burn" by Deep Purple will melt their heads. Fingers crossed!
Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 Live at Tanglewood. Everyone is blown away by this one!
I scoped it out. Sorry man, but that Cult of Luna song is pretty repetitive, slow, and dis-interesting. I'm not sure it would be for them, but hey I'm not them. Just my unsolicited input
The band “Triumph”. Either “fight the good fight” or “lay it on the line”
Magic Power is really good too
Anything Triumph !!!!!
Both great choices!
@@asiavassos9649 one of my favourite songs from my teens and still one of my all time favourites
“Lay It On The Line,” definitely. “Spellbound,” second choice.
Leftoverture is one of the best recordings in the history of music. Iconic band.
This album is a master piece man, Kansas is my favorite band of progressive rock EVER!
Masque is awesome too.
@@sorgism i finally got leftoverature and masque on vinyl, it's just too good
I love every song on that album.
"Court Of The Crimson King" by King Crimson
Oh man, they might not dig the lyrics, but the Fire Witch can wait...
Robert Fripp is gonna be pissed
Robert Fripp tends to have a problem with their stuff being posted by other people (even if it's just album covers) so it might not be a good idea for the channel.
If they do decide on King Crimson, I'd like them to do 21st Century Schizoid Man to just to see if they recognize it.
If your a supernatural fan then you know this song by heart!
👎 👎 👎 👎
you'll also know it wasn't their original theme song.
Don Davi yea I know that. But they play that song almost every time there’s a season recap
I don't know, I saw some teen girls try to karaoke this song and didn't know the lyrics to any of the parts that aren't in the Road So Far recap.
The Patched Vest there are a few exceptions 😂 but trust me most supernatural fans are legit rock fans as well
The intermet is a weird place . This os a somg i have had in my life since i was a baby . To hear you guys get joy from it is just a good feeling , even though i onviously dont know you guys hahahah .keep up the good work fellas !
This song came on the radio daily when I was still living in Wisconsin back in 2012.
Kansas - what you get when musicians really know how to play their instruments!
Jethro Tull - Thick as a brick!! A progressive folk rock classic!
I like a lot of tempo changes. I also like time changes
SAME!!!!
this song got renewed life as being the season finale song for pretty much every season to many fans this song is the real supernatural theme which is great got my daughter into the song as she became a fan through me as she started watching it because of me and fell in love with the song lol
I listen to this when I'm packing up the salt, stakes and lighter fluid in the trunk of dad's Impala....
From Lawrence KS here. Loved the shout out. You guys are humble and hilarious.
I would say Kansas is Progressive Rock. Definitely.
"25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago!!!
Y’all have the ability to take songs that I’ve heard thousands of times and give me new appreciation for their artistry. Bravo, gents.
There are very few perfect songs but this is one of them. Everything about it is a journey, mirroring his own personal quest. A true gem in music.
I love the way this song toes the line between prog rock and a more commercial arena rock sound. It really is the best of both worlds.
If Boston went Prog...
John Douglas Racing Video I think Foreplay / Long Time is pretty prog too.
I honestly never thought of this song as prog rock, still can't see it as other than arena.
My late father was a Vietnam Veteran and this was a very introspective song for him. The lyrics meant a lot to him and said that at times they described his feelings upon returning home.
Exactly. Me too.
There are a TON of amazing bands from Lawrence, KS. Ironically, "Carry On Wayward Son" is sort of the theme song to the TV series "Supernatural", and the main characters of the show are from Lawrence.
One of the members of the band was fe Lawrence
Kinda sad that his only memory of Lawrence and going to the Martin Logan factory was Bada Bing. Lawrence is a kick-ass town.
Greatest Lawrence band ever was Blue Riddim Band
I'd say The Get Up Kids, but to each their own. 😃
Love watching your rock and metal reactions. I've heard many of the songs a thousand times before, but you help make it fresh, like I can experience it again for the first time along with you.
Im sure you've heard Dust in the Wind , huge hit for them
It's a good song, but damn man is it cheesy.
@PstScrpt you're my boy, Blue!
Absolutely love that song!
"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly
Anapurnah PLEASE
A must do
They have to do the full version with all the solos lol
Steve Walsh definitely had one of the best Rock voices in the business back in the day! That guy could sing! Incredible!
Vocal harmonies don't get much better than Steve Walsh and Robbie Steinhardt.
Steve perry, bruce Dickinson, Ronny James dio, rob halford, king diamond, Mikael Akerfeldt, those are some of my favorite and in my opinion the best singers in rock/metal
@@joeyhammer6702 I would add Robert Plant, Glen Hughes, David Coverdale, Paul Rodgers and Lou Gramm to that list
Great list guys, but any list like that is incomplete without Brad Delp.
@@Lightningclad1 let's not forget Ian Gillan!
This song was written in one night. Even though they have been a band for quite a while when this song was made, it was actually their first hit record that took them to stardom.
One of the greatest American rock songs ever.
“Long Train Runnin” by Doobie Brothers is another great song with a lot of moving parts
And China Grove
South City midnight lady!
Definitely up-vote for the Doobie Brothers. Great band.
Jesus is just alright
thank you - i've been requesting this!
I almost envy you guys for being able to REALLY listen to songs like this for the first time. Keep up the good work and give Savatage a listen, Hall of the Mountain King.
Yeah! Savatage! Definitely! Hall of the Mountain King, Gutter Ballet. Then check out Trans Siberian Orchestra.
They were a semi-prog rock band. And, the drummer was one of the most "relaxed" rock drummers of all time. Very funky dude.
Jimi Hendrix puts the CLASSIC in classic rock
Purple Haze
Hey Joe
All Along the Watchtower
Now Molly Hatchet - Flirting with Disaster, another funky Classic Rock song
Yes!!!
Yeahh ! But I think One Man's Pleasure is funkier
So many people forget about this band and this banger of a song
@@huntercarter2073 Agreed!
I feel like I want to hunt a ghost after hearing this.
They even shout out Lawrence 👀💀👻
Ass-butt...
Lmfao
@@anonimuso that was one of the funniest random moments on the show.
@@chaost4544 and salt that bitch Sammy
Kansas is more of a hard rock/ prog rock combo. They balance the two very well.
And just a little bit Southern Boogie/Bar.
No. They are satanic brutal death metal.
Kansas definitely has other songs that are a lot more “prog” than this one! This is a classic though. Great song.
Some Thoughts -I agree, Song for America, anyone? But, don’t you agree Kansas is more of a blues
ock band with long songs than a prog band? Kansas is so heavily influenced by melody and the blues end of rock that I have never really thought of them in the same place musically as King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, Marillion, or even Rush.
I have heard people compare Symphony X with Kansas and from a point of view I understand them. There is these time signatures going on and some of the keyboard sounds are a bit similar eh?
Tee Jay Are agreed!
Early Dream Theater has a lot of Kansas influence also.
Now, yes, I would agree, but in ‘76 this was very progressive. Nobody was doing what they were doing.
I had a troubled childhood and my dad made this my ringtone when I called him. It inspires me to this day.
True musicians and artists. This was my first time seeing one of your music review videos and I must say, I'll be back for more.
Normies: That's a cool song. I like.
SPN Fans: *sobbing uncontrollably" They will never understand this songs true meaning!!!
TRUE!!!
Keep cryin
Exactly!!!! Shout out to Lawrence!!
Last season 😥
Facts 😂😂
That song plays on the season review at the last episode of every season of Supernatural, the TV show. If you've watched it, you heard it.
"Dust in the Wind," is sitting there waiting on a fire reaction from Lost in Vegas
YAaaaaasssss!!!
I WAS JUST THINKING THIS
Ain't no lie!!!!
Much slower song but phenom.
There’s a cool documentary about this band called “Miracles out of Nowhere”. I caught it in TV randomly late one night. Being familiar with their hits, I found it interesting.
Love this song, hits me everytime I hear it on Supernatural.
Styx- come sail away
Styx- blue collar man
Joe Walsh - Rocky Mountain Way
🎸
Yes, please do this one!
Good call. Hotel California (assuming they haven't heard it before) would be another "classic rock" must.
anything by James Gang
Agreed 👍 this is right down their alley
I grew up on great bands like Kansas, Boston, Chicago,, ect all these bands are the essence of classic rock!!
