“What’s the name of that college town in Kansas?”
Me, an Australian who has never left my country and never even met someone from Kansas: Lawrence. It’s Lawrence.
The hometown of the Winchester brothers. I swear, half my American geography knowledge comes either from the show Supernatural, or fanfic about the show.

    The lyrics are so intense....
'Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
    I was soaring ever higher
    But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming
    I can hear them say'
    .....
'...If I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know....'

When Kansas was in the recording session for this album, it was the night before their last day to close it out and I don't know if Kerry had this melody come to him or the lyric, the dude was VERY prolific as a writer of both lyric and melody. But it came to him so he wrote the lyrics down that night along with the basic melody for this.
He came in almost bashful about it saying he had an idea for one more song. This is the last day of the session. They worked this out that same day. The musicianship of this is amazing, vocals outstanding, guitar, drums and keyboard work all works of art. You listen to any element of this song, any piece of it and it's excellent. They recorded it that evening and that was a wrap. This song made them, and it happened in the last day of the session for this album, from Kerry's thoughts the night before.

We were given full access, and had the joy of actually meeting and talking with the band. Believe me when I tell you that they were the most genuine, humble, and kind people you could ever hope to meet. Being a fan, since I was a boy, in the 70’s, and then meeting them, only to realize what truly great guys they were, really reinforced my love for this legendary band.

@@taniele84 Hi, this song came out in 1978. They were still putting 8 track players in cars although cassettes were more popular by then. Internet did not exist so there was no Sirius, Pandora or You Tube. The number 1 way to listen to music was radio. As a 22 y/o dude in '78 I listened to a couple of the local FM rock stations. When Dust In The Wind came out it fit into multiple categories and was played on multiple stations and played and played and played some more. DITW is a very good song and I know that people love it. I'm a pretty big Kansas fan but prefer the long epic proggy tunes more. Those were not radio friendly in '78. Sorry for the rambling.

As a Supernatural fan I really get emotional hearing this song. The show is on the last season and normally is played as the opener for the season finale. Which means, the next time I'm going to hear it in the show is going to be the final episode.
Yeah, it's great song, although I think the changes in tempo occur a bit too frequently but that's criticism on a very high level. It's a near-perfect song. And Steve Walsh's clean and clear vocals are just incredible. You hear him sing Carry On My Wayward son without any instrument and the song immediately comes alive in your head. It's catchy, it's funky, it grooves, it's emotional, it give you everything you'd want in a classic rock song.

Some Thoughts -I agree, Song for America, anyone? But, don’t you agree Kansas is more of a blues
ock band with long songs than a prog band? Kansas is so heavily influenced by melody and the blues end of rock that I have never really thought of them in the same place musically as King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, Marillion, or even Rush.

I love seeing the reactions of first time listeners to songs I have known for so long! It brings a renewed appreciation for tunes that I have known so well for so long. I dig it, it's like watching someones face as they unwrap a gift. PS You may want to pull your mics in and down so they could be pointed at your mouths when you speak toward each other, which of course you do, since you are talking to each other :). Right now when you speak to each other your voices go right past the mic instead of "into" it. In other words, pull the mics in and down (so they don't block your faces) and point them up and slightly out and you audio will be more consistent. Right now your voice levels drop out as you turn your heads to speak to each other. Dig the show. Enjoy the music!
