    Also Canon has their "official" speedbooster (made for the Canon C70 but works on the Komodo). Pricey but optically great and might allow for somewhat usable autofocus (compared to the Viltrox and Metabones) if that's something you want. Not that the autofocus of the Komodo is that great to begin with, but it's not the worst I've seen.

    Excellent video! We own Alexa Mini (non-LF) packages, Sony, Canon and other cinema rigs. We just ordered a Komodo last week for our underwater work in a Gates housing. This morning we were meeting and discussing what glass for the Komodo U/W rig and the image crop on our FF lenses. I mentioned a speed booster to make up for the sensor crop with the wide angle lenses we are planning to use and this definitely cements that decision. Another factor we have to deal with is the desire to shoot at 60fps U/W on the Komodo which puts us even further in the hole on RED's internal sensor crop to 4k. I did read a cheat/hack for that issue as well to at least get 50fps and still be in 6k using the full width of the Komodo sensor. Thanks for a very timely tech post!

I have a good budget and I am undecided which you recommend the Red Komodo or the Bmpcc 4k for a better price. It is also compatible with my Nikon lens for the camera I am in love with the color of the Komodo although both cameras have a good image.

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  2 роки тому

      Thank you!! Undortunately, it is not flush. It actually needs to be removed to even get the adapter on the camera, since the komodo has a bit of a lip on the bottom. But for me, it's no problem since I always mount to my baseplate, which gives it a few inches of clearance. Highly recommend the Bright Tangerine Left Field baseplate for komodo, it's rock solid

    In addition to what he says, get the Metabones T Cine version (exists in PL and EF) with 0.71 glass. The T Cine has a PL style lock and can be screwed into the camera plate. This way it won't move when you focus. The canon booster doesn't have the locking mechanism and will move based on my research.

  • @StringerBell2002
    @StringerBell2002 2 роки тому

    Solid math but one note: LF sensor is larger than FF. That’s why Arri deemed it LF (Larger Format aka Larger than FF).

  • @user-yx4wx4oq4g
    @user-yx4wx4oq4g 2 роки тому

    A speedbooster crops in which is why you're not seeing the vignette... it doesnt make your shot wider it makes it tighter, but...you're gaining about a stop, which is why the background is more out of focus. So you're not going "wider" full frame, you're actually getting a tighter shot at 0.71 of the original image size.

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  2 роки тому

      That’s totally a thing! It’s called an expander :) A speed booster, aka focal reducer, does give you a wider FOV 👍🏻

      @@LukeHolliday you're right it is the expander and it makes it wider. you're basically using the FF lens to its full potential. New generation RF lenses can be much superior to older EF speed boosted lenses. You'll pay less for better RF lenses, with better optics, and wider FOV's than if you used this focal reducer. It's like getting an adapter to make your car tires bigger, you're better off just buying bigger tires and selling the smaller and older ones.

    • @LukeHolliday
      @LukeHolliday  2 роки тому +2

      @@hufman9807 I totally agree that RF canon glass is better than their EF, but this video is mainly about having the ability to take existing FF lenses that can be EF (DZO Vespid, sigma art / cine, and pretty much any vintage lens adapted to EF) and use its full image circle, giving a large format feel. For example, the sigma art 35mm 1.4 I used for a lot of these tests ends up being equivalent to f/1.0 after it’s boosted. For a $300 adapter, it’s pretty cool what you can do!

      It is entirely different. A wider lens is capturing more information at the light entry point of the lens itself, but being rendered on a smaller plain which is why even though the lens is wider, it will still look like it’s shot on a smaller sensor.
      The speed booster increases the field of view that’s allowed to be rendered to the sensor, thus a wider image, but not optically distorted.
      This is why attaching a wide lens to an iPhone camera, will still not hide the fact that it looks like it was shot on a tiny sensor.

    That statement made me laugh. It's such a bold statement and so far from the truth.
    ARRI has tons of other advantages other than full frame covarage.
    if this statement was true, nobody would buy a v raptor too. do you really think that your komodo is equal to the raptor with a speed booster?
    This setup is still not like a real full frame sensor. Plus it probably color shifts the image. Yes, you can color edit extremely well with r3d files, but do you know how to? and do you even want to? These are key things to take in mind before investing in this setup.
    If you don't care that much about colors, why buy a red in the first place?

    Shallow dof is overrated, immediately when I see this my mind goes to lower budget/indie. Even though cameras like monstro, mini lf, Alexa 65, panavision dxl2 or even imax give a shallower dof at a given tstop/focal length, often they will shoot at T4-T8 for lens performance, and they have well designed sets. They don’t need to mask the background because it’s designed so well. Look at your next bond film and tell me how many shots are ultra shallow dof vs being able to make out the background. Tbh this is why the joker vs the dark knight, the joker looks much lower budget (also because it is) than the dark night, even though in theory, imax can give you the shallowest dof possible, but Nolan chooses not to
