I recently got my Komodo and I am absolutely in love with it. Being also my first Red, it took some time to process the concept of ISO as metadata yet essential for low light and bright scenarios, but once I grasped the concept I understood the true potential of the camera! Great and informative video! Thank you!
Please provide any videos that helped the over all experience I literally just bought it to!
The Komodo looks like a solid stand and deliver, all around production tool. The images look definitely Red, and certainly beautiful. You cannot beat Red's color science. I just wish I could get one at a 35% better price, but there it is. Quality has never been inexpensive.
its called the scarlet. heck even the original red1 holds up. even the bmpcc4k is really good!
@@user-zv7lm8uk7h I agree, but there's not enough resolution. I need at least 8K, I could see even shooting 12K for future proofing certain shoots I do. I'm seriously looking at the URSA Mini Pro 12K.
@@markjob6354 Do it. I have owned a few reds, and tested some blackmagic lately as I await komodo, BM is very good,
@@markjob6354 what do you "need" at least 8K for?
Thanks for the detailed review!
Awesome! I wandered into a public presser yesterday as it was set up to go. out of the 8 cameras 4 were white Komodos! Thanks for your pro channel!
bough mine yesteday... cant wait
Well done!
useful on the red system.
I own a Komodo and I absolutely love it. If there's MK2 for this body, I wish they put high frame rates w/out crop, better performance in low light, and 2nd sdi port. If I had budget, I would want 2 more of these
The Komodo is a fantastic camera! I use it quite a bit for me UA-cam content.
Thx. For narrative projects and at $6k it seems to hold its own perfectly well (image wise it seems to exceed in some situations) with the more expensive Red options. (Unless one needs high frame rates etc) Fantastic camera. (P.s. I like the way you say 'consider subscribing' rather than 'smash that subscribe button'!)
Thank you for sharing this video, I would love a dedicated video on exposing in different senecios with the Komodo!
We got our Komodo from CVP and 6 months later, it's really been an amazing camera :)
I love my komodo. LOVE. I'd also love a little more in depth video on your exposure process for it.
could you see yourself bringing it to travel with? the long startup time seems to be an obstacle
@@ryansulak if you’re asking me, yes I travel with it all the time. Is it longer to start up than a normal camera, but it’s only like 30 seconds I’ve never “missed a shot” because of start up time.
Mad CA on the studio shots, especially marco :O
The Milvus 100 wide open till around 4 has heavy CA! The bts stuff was shot on a mix of blackwing's and XEEN CF's. Jake
would be intresting to see the Dji Lidar system Vs RED AF. Not a deep dive just some overview. Ooh wrong Chanel.... :)
Love your content. Always looks top notch. Have you had a chance to use the tilta advanced power module? Hopefully I should have my Komodo in a week or so and was thinking about going that route. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Great video! Also spotted massive dead pixel at 1:00
This is exactly why I've fallen in love with the Komodo. The only thing I'm missing is high framerates. Really considering the v-raptor for that reason.
Yeah the frame rates the RAPTOR offers for the price are awesome! I do wish they could squeeze 48 fps in 6K out of the KOMODO! Jake
@@CVPTV you can in 2.4:1, but unfortunately some clients want 16:9 which forces us to 5k. My main problem is anamorphic which is capped at 40fps
Yeah I meant 17:9/16:9!
best content creator {CVP}
Great video. Please talk more about the Komodo and how you guys set it. Have you guys tried the Link Adapter with a smartphone? Is it worth? Not to worry about the SDI connection.
Great review. I'm curious with adopters you mentioned. Many of them have too much play, I know you did a video on this subject - in saying that, are you using the KipperRie Revolva series much? Seems like such a great adapter for quick high quality ND and lock down the lens. What not use this system as a main stay? Thank you!
Awesome stuff. What's your audio workflow to go along the Komodo? MixPre with timecode sync?
i had the red Komodo for 1 year. I just upgrade to the Red V raptor. its a beast love it !!! but the on thing is that its really expensive
Is it possible you guys make a video on how to edit R3D files and how to expose it correctly ? Also how to use redcine pro X
If I had the money, I'd buy the Komodo.
Have you tried some lenders to use on the black magic design studio 4k pro
In a weird situation right now. I have an FX6 on order from December at a premier cinema house in the U.S. I reached out this week and haven't heard back. I just heard that B&H now has an expected ship date for the FX6 as December 2022, which would be insane for me if my order is delayed a full year.
The Komodo looks great from the footage that you all have provided. I wish it used the new CF Express B cards compared to Cfast, but I feel like this camera would be a great replacement for the FX6 if the order is delayed any longer.
Thanks for sharing! If I was in the UK, I would have gone with you all!
Our backorders of the FX6 are crazy to. It's a combination of high demand and supply shortages due to the silicon shortage from Sony. I really do love our KOMODO, the FX6 is an incredibly versatile camera though if you do a range of work. I've seen some great imagery out of it as well Thanks for watching/commenting, Jake
@@CVPTV I see! I'm going to give it another month and see.
@@CVPTV Rip UMP12K preorders :X
I'm not really a red fan but I was curious about the lenses you were using I'm more black magic design fan
CVP does have the best skin tone on UA-cam. Maybe it's the camera. Maybe it's the post. Probably both
Thank you for the wonderful Komodo series videos. They were very helpful. Could you share which permeant solutions you ended up going with both for run and gun and for the studio?
Hey Eldad, glad our videos have been helpful for you! I will put together a list for you after BSC (an expo here in the UK) once we’ve got everything on order! Jake
@@CVPTV Great content and thanks. My question is if the Red komodo is an A cam then what should be a B cam? Please advice
Try using some of these really nice zoom lens on the black magic design studio 4K pro to see how it works do you know ways to make it work off the camera as a power zoom company nice really beautiful glass lenses can use for bobcats and Cinema I would love to see you do video on some of those and how do you the ENT lens to make it work correctly
🙌😉
Hi Jake! re: exposure @ 3:34 in the video. You monitor at ISO 250 and use the traffic light system to overexpose until the traffic lights go on then dial it back down until they go away and highlights aren't clipping. Are you using NDs to dial the exposure down? and are you usually recording at ISO 250 or ISO 800 - or are you using ISO 250 because ETTR makes the image too bright on the monitor to judge the image? Thanks!
Hey Jon, when shooting in our studio we normally use our lighting to control exposure. We are recording at 250 and often go below that in post. This results in a really clean image in post for the studio stuff we mention in this video! Jake
@@CVPTV Thanks a bunch! Keep up the great work.
How do you use the traffic light system to overexpose? Changing aperture?
Mix of lighting and aperture. Jake
what monitor are you using on the komodo
What zoom lens were you using on the red Komodo I saw a few of them what brand and how many zoom lens did you use
We've used a few zoom lenses with the KOMODO. Mainly a mix of Canon RF L series and DZO Pictors. How come? Jake
What is your audio solution?
We have on order a significant number of Komodos and Raptors. Great flexibility in various shooting situations.
Me too. I ordered 30 komodos and 18 red raptors. And 50 arri super 35s. And 3 sets of Leica Thalia lenses. And 20 sets of NIB Master Primes. Oh and 7 sets of Cooke S7is.
I wish Red would make an XLR module for the Komodo! That’s my only hold out and why I haven’t switched from my Pocket 6k Pro.
Hi There,
Please... Can you explain in detail (using what controls specifically), the statement: "We monitor at the lowest ISO possible (250), then use the Traffic Light system to over-expose until our highlight/traffic lights come on, and then we dial it back down so they go away and we're not clipping..."
So, my confusion is what are you actually physically interacting with, when you "use the Traffic Light System to over-expose..." ? I mean, if you have the ISO set to 250, then what are you changing to then push your exposure to the right?
Thanks for your immensely instructive videos, you have definitely contributed a great deal to my understanding and career! 🙂
Hey, I would suggest checking out this blog post on RED's www.red.com/red-101/red-camera-exposure-tools If you have any more questions let us know and thanks for the kind words! Jake
@@CVPTV Thanks, I'll check it out.
@jake - do you find the image from the new Raptor to be better than the Monstro?
They are very similar, but there are small differences. Are you looking at buying one or the other? Jake
@@CVPTV Just noticed Monstro's coming down in price significantly - to my eye has a slightly more organic image. Like the form factor of DSMC3 - but looks slightly clinical image wise.
the one thing I don't understand is this: seems to me one of the advantages of getting the Komodo, is that you could get super35 lenses and save some money over full sensor lenses. but everyone seems to be throwing the speed booster on there and buying full frame lenses. I don't get it.
How would you describe the colors the RED Komodo produces? To me, I would say there is a sepia tint to the footage. Additionally, shadows look crushed.
The colours are great, defo no sepia tint to my eye. What footage do the shadows look crushed? Jake
I was hoping you would talk about the Komodo in regards to working with clients.😕
Curious, since ISO doesn’t affect the traffic lights, why do you choose to set your ISO at 250 when exposing?
It's essentially a working method of "exposing to the right," giving the sensor as much light as possible for the cleanest possible final image. Setting ISO to 250 is essentially just a monitoring choice (when shooting r3d) that encourages you to give the camera as much light as possible, and then the traffic lights ensure you don't go too far and exceed the dynamic range of the camera.
By comparison, if you're monitoring at ISO800, the same amount of light would LOOK overexposed on your monitor-- even though the recorded image might be no different.
@@docbenway0 That makes sense, thanks!
would be really helpful if you guys could label the lenses used with the komodo during the cutaways too
99% of the shots with the KOMODO where with the Otus set / Milvus Macro we say about in the video. Jake
@@CVPTV It's a great set of affordable lenses! Have you guys tried it with the 0.71 speedbooster from canon? it's a potential setup i'm looking at for lower budget commercial work.
Yeah they work perfectly with them! We are going to be grabbing the Canon .71 booster asap. Jake
Some youtubers state that the Sony a7siii has better image quality than the komodo. Is that true? Which camera has the better dynamic range?
They are quite comparable dynamic range wise, but I would argue overall image quality and colour is better on KOMODO, but I have seen great imagery produced on both. The KOMODO will be much more expensive with the accessories you need to rig it out with. They are also two very different systems to use and I think that is more important to consider than the image they produce. Jake
I thought ETTR with RED was a no no?
Why’s that?
@@CVPTV Saw it here: ua-cam.com/video/2iRTzBOETKE/v-deo.html at about 1:18
It’s tempting, but not for me. :)
Okay so you use RED cameras for UA-cam videos.
Anyone else find that rather show-offy, or am I missing something?
