I love your videos bro! They are funny, entertaining and extremely knowable. So thank you for continuing to make great content! I find I have a similar issue with the provided canon eon r adapter with both the C70 and Komodo with "lens jumping" So I'm sure it only gets worse with a speed booster.
Other than kipper tie, are there any other locking EF adapters on the market for a reasonable price?

    • @JustinPhillip

Thank you! Metabones may have some options over on their website. But, i think for the most part, you're gonna be hard pressed to find one. That Kippertie is actually about $200 cheaper than it was when the Komodo first dropped.

So the Metabones Cine Lock is firm enough when rack focusing? Does it compare to KipperTie in practice? In practice, not in construction (I got it that it's not all metal like Kipper). I suppose if you use FF cine lenses on that metabones that you're in business.

hey! I've been thinking on getting the Komodo for a big project and we want to change focus with a focus motor and my doubt came with... does the frame will move even if the lens is attached to rods?

  • @goodeggproductions

Here's my experience with the Viltrox reducer. I have a full set of the DZO Vespid primes which claim a coverage circle of 46.5mm. This SHOULD be plenty large to cover the full Komodo sensor, but yikes did this reducer give me issues. The 16mm had some pretty bad vignetting. The 25 was actually ok. The 50mm was horrendous, and the 75mm even had some. And the most bizarre of them all was the 125mm also showed some when stopped down to T/4 or smaller.
But worse than that, the Viltrox screwed up my infinity focus. The 50mm maximum focus (which is actually beyond the infinity marking) was about 8 feet. And the 16mm was even worse at about 5 feet. I want to believe that there is something seriously wrong with my copy of the Viltrox because I've been using MFT SpeedBoosters for years and never had the focus go so weird.
I immediately ordered the Canon 0.71x focal reducer and I'll be doing an in-depth video to show the difference a more-than-double-priced alternative can make. Fortunately, the DZO lenses all have barely dampened focus rings on them, so I probably will not have to deal with lens movement with a follow focus. Though, when my camera is rigged up, I will always use a lens support on the rails to mitigate any wobble.
I'm holding out hope that my copy of the Viltrox was just defective, and they now offer a "pro" version of this focal reducer with a locking mount. I just couldn't take the chance that I'll have the same horrible vignetting and infinity focus problems again.

@@JustinPhillip yeah I actually think they made better quality adapters around 2016-2018. When I purchased my e-ef and the first mft-ef they were built much better than the more recent versions. I own the canon adapter and did feel they did a really good job with the build quality and electronics. It stays on my camera with the 8 sinn cage and support

Don’t buy a Viltrox adapter. When camera manufacturer does a firmware update, it’s highly likely your adaptor will no longer work. I don’t have the same issue with Metabones adaptor. Been waiting over six months for Viltrox to fix mine and they have no idea when they will have a fix.

2:00 It does not increase your maximum aperture... A common misconception in those that don't fully understand what a focal reducer does.
You gain light, whether it's a stop or more, depends on the focal reducer, however that is akin to having a sensor that is more or less sensible to light at the same ISO.
The aperture of the lens stays the same. Example: your Sigma 18-35 at F1.2/F1.3 with the focal reducer will have the exact same depth of field as if at F1.8 without the focal reducer.
The major problem that makes this misconception of "bigger aperture" endure is the fact the F stop number on the camera changes to something greater when using the focal reducers.
A foolish mistake since F stop does not refer purely only to quantity of light but also other measurements such as depth of field.
As such, manufacturers should stop this already and simply treat it as if you were swapping to a camera that has a more light sensible sensor, like going from a GH5 to a Sony A7sIII for instance.
    No rant indented ;)

Sigma 18-35mm is APS-C lens, not Full Frame lens :-) Therefore you should not use it with speedbooster on Super 35 sensor. Such basic information you do not know and you make videos about it :-) It could work on Micro 4/3 sensor with crop 2x but don´t you see that terrible vigneting and picture deformatiom at the edges of frame on Aps-C Sigma 18-35mm + speedbooster + Komodo Super 35 sensor? :-)
