Chechnya is Russia’s achilles heel. In 1991, the comparatively small mountainous constituent republic, situated in the far South of what is now the Russian federation, broke away from the Soviet Union and the then Russian Soviet Socialist Republic, and after beating back Russian forces in the first Chechen war from 1994 to 1996, would become defacto independent until the year 2000.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the prospect of Chechen independence was disastrous for Russian geostrategists. Were Chechnya to gain independence from the Russian federation, it could trigger a domino effect of other nominally Russian republics with their own distinct cultural and ethnic identities declaring independence from the Russia.
After the second Chechen war, Russia would put an end to this domino threat, retaking control of Chechnya and keeping the conflict under wraps ever since.
However, despite relative stability in the North Caucasus in recent years, and particularly in the context of events in Ukraine, were an adversarial state to stir up trouble in Chechnya, it could cause Russia real problems.
You shouldve also talk about billions of rubles which Russias spending on Chechnya just so it continues to be loyal

Hi, I'm from this region (can't call it Chechnya). I will use a translator as I don't know English well.
People in the comments are mistaken, thinking that we are now on the side of Russia, but this is not so. You cannot speak out against Russia, Kadyrov and his lies.
This is a place where you can literally be tortured to death in the most cruel and humiliating ways. This is a place where if you refuse to go to the front in Ukraine, they can send your older relatives (father, uncle).
Kadyrovtsy is a kind of punitive detachments, rather than soldiers for combat operations. Ramzan promised 10,000 soldiers to Ukraine, but in fact withdrew the majority in case a riot starts here. Another reason is that in the first days of the war, at least 60 soldiers who were considered among his best (fought on the side of Assad in Syria) were easily killed by a Ukrainian UAV ( You must have seen how bayraktar destroyed a convoy with trucks, there were Chechens). Tushaev (his general) died the same week. [Edit: Tushaev is alive, but he's not in Ukraine anymore]
The civilian Chechen "volunteers" (who were in prison) are sent to the front lines like cannon fodder. When Russian artillery and aviation clear settlements, Kadyrov’s best fighters enter there, with the modern rifles, best equipment, American Obscure helmets (lol), to show off on camera for propaganda (for Ramzan’s PR), pretending that the losses are minimal and they are the most superb.
The supporters of Ichkeria are fighting for Ukraine (three battalions as more of our soldiers died in the second war). Two of them have been there since 2014.
For us, the biggest problem is that if we start an uprising, we will not only fight with the Kadyrovites, but also with Russia, which means that we will probably again lose a large part of our population from Russian aviation and MLRS
During the first war, the West did not help us, but considered this war "Russia's internal affair." Therefore, it is ridiculous to read comments about how our fighters fought allegedly because of the West lol. The West helped the Russians with humanitarian aid while we were starving because of the war.
What is the problem if Chechnya remains with Russia?
Russia will lose in Ukraine and then collapse to many parts. And Chechen Republic of Ichkeria will be free, sovereign state
@@royvirafayet6687 Don't think that you would want to be a part of a country that killed hundreds of thousands of your people in last 30 years and even more in past few centuries

Try to find logic with these muslims
Because there's two faction, sectarian radicals Salafism and Whababist fight on Ukranians' side Kadyrov switch sides after he realized the West was using them to divide and conquer them.
this guy doesn't do a particularly good job of describing Chechen politics vis a vis Russia, but there's essentially two groups in Chechnya: those who are pro-Russia and those who are anti-Russia. The Chechen Wars were as much a civil war between these factions as they were a question of Russian occupation.
And many Chechens fight for Ukraine
there are also Chechens (and Belarusians) who chose to side with Ukraine against Russia
It’s also important to note that recently, the Ukrainian government has recognized Chechnya’s independence from Russia following backlash against Putin’s “partial” mobilization among the Caucasus people.
And? Did anybody else has recognized it's independence? Did Russia recognized current Ukrainian goverment as a legitimate one?
So what you're basically saying is that some clowns, backed up by NATO, did some clown move, which wasn't approved by any of the real NATO members, not to mention other independant countries. Why is it so important then?

Да да да маленькая Чечня напала на Россию, именно когда России нужен был повод для реванша, как удобно вышло😂. Давай ещё расскажи про нападение на Беларусь и про то что Украина собиралась напасть на РФ, даже это менее бредово звучит.

Chechnya is completely surrounded by Russia and relies on federal subsidies from Moscow for 80% of its budget. It buys all its food from Russia, and sources it’s water from Russia. It has zero chance of independence
Also Russia could obliterate Azerbaijan with a few missile strikes, non-nuclear. It uses old Russian air defence systems.
It seems Northern caucasus states will gain their independence thanks to Ukraine and it’s allies 👍

Just a small correction. It was RSFSR Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic. That's why Chechnya was a republic under RSFSR as an ASSR (Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic). Just to make it cleaner

When Russia launches a new offensive, that would be the perfect moment for these republics to snatch independence from Russia. Not saying it’s going to happen or there are any plans or galvanized movements ready to act on this opportunity, but I wish there were. Chechnya, Dagestan… Russia would have real trouble handling so many conflicts at once.
Russia would just bombard them to oblivion and I dont think they want independence while living like in stone age

Thank you. That was very well written and to the point.
Russia started with its empire building by grabbing Chechnya then and is continuing.
You mean, it was interfering with empire building of the USA that is continuing since 1945. Latest feat is sabotaging the energy supply to Germany.
Chechens agreed to stay in Russia in exchange for more autonomy. Their leader openly denounced the US for funding Al Qaeda and other jihaddist militants who wreaked havoc in Chechnya

@@sketchingdown9710 That's just deflecting what Russia is doing.
Ukraine is an independent country, as Russia and USA and Ukraine all decided in 1991. Russia decided to conquer Ukraine in 2014, and again in 2022. By definition, Russia is imperialistic.
NATO currently doesn't allow Ukraine to join because it's at conflict. If Ukraine choose to stay independent from NATO, that's their choice, just like Switzerland, Austria or Serbia. By definition, it's not imperialistic. in fact, Sweden and Finland seek to join NATO because Russia is imperialistic.
Automatically repeating what Putin is accused of, against Putin's adversaries, just makes you a narcissist. It's a psychopathic trait and you should get that checked out with your doctor.
Are you sure Ryukyuans want independence? Why should you decide over them?
The weat didn't support Chechnya cause they are Muslim... think abt it.
When Iraq invaded Kuwait USA helped them. The West saved Kosovans from genocide by Serbs. Also West was helping Kurds - so what are you talking about? It has nothing to do with religion but interests. Nobody cares about some small unimportant republic in Caucasus and nobody will risk a direct confrontation with Russia
No the west can’t do nothing about it since Chechnya is a part of Russia & if the west intervened with the war then Russia would respond

Now's the time to break away Chechnia, while Russia's concentrating on other things ;)
There are still about 60.000 russian troops located in Chechnya. Tons of military bases. How can Chechnya fight them off on 15.000 km2 with no weapons and help?

I see a lot of people calling Chechens heroes just because Russia is invading Ukraine rn.
And while I don't support Russia, people must understand that when these 2 wars were ongoing, the Chechens were literally committing terrorism. Not against military targets, but civilians, theatres and literal schools resulting in the deaths of over a hundred school children.
When Chechnya was somewhat independent, it committed many acts of terrorism, funded rebellions in other places and was effectively led by warlords, while persecuting and expelling Russian citizens leading to Chechnya's industry and businesses effectively collapsed. Russia is by no means a very good country politically, but Chechens should not be seen as heroes just because they fought against Russia.
