I can’t count how many times I was told to never blend my charcoal with my fingers. My instructors were great but you are a true artist. What a lovely drawing!
My two cents on the topic has always been that it’s all good to blend w/fingers if it’s integrated into the process, and you’re not going for a highly refined finish. The issue is when you’re working on something like a cast drawing, it can create different levels of absorbency in the paper and cause darker patches in areas meant for an even tone. But for most circumstances isn’t a problem as long as you’re methodical about it.
Thanks for sharing this awesome drawing and process! Really cool to see how you balance simplification/complexity, and the big decisions like leaving those trees out. It’s hard to see the forest through the trees when you’re in it. ;).
I absolutely adore this video. Thank you so much for your instruction and inspiration. Your piece is beautiful. I love the subject matter. Happy holidays! Diana
Thank you for sharing, really love this piece and agree totally perfect without the trees, really inspiring, I’d love to see more videos of how you do charcoal, really helpful ❤
Oh, I am sharing this video with my young art students. Your teaching is beautiful and you are an inspiration. I am going to do some exercise drawings, to experience your fun techniques. I am so grateful, that I've found you, when typing 'charcoal drawing'. I've subscribed. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous drawing.
Hi Andrew, I really appreciate your charcoal work, whether you use water and casein or not. I like seeing the different techniques and tricks you invent to make your tools perform at their best, so much so that in some parts they look like anything but charcoal. Some of these works remind me of good chalcographic engravings in which you find bold blacks, total whites and a whole range of half tones. Thanks for the videos you share. Martha
You are the first artist ive see using the straight edge blade to make narrow blades of grass. THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIP! Great piece of charcoal art my faviort medium. looking forward to your next charcoal piece😊❤ watching from Huachuca Arizona
Yet another amazing and beautiful drawing! So interesting to watch you do this. Glad you left the trees out; they are really lovely in the photo but agree the drawing works better without them as we’re not distracted from your amazing forgotten gate.
I found you through the Sketchbook Challenge group. I've done very little charcoal work but this piece has inspired me to do more! I love the way your piece is as much about removing charcoal as laying it down. Lots of inspiration and much food for thought! Thank you for this.
Very beautiful. You've made the right decision to leave the trees out. Arches makes great papers I actually use their paper made for oil painting and really like it. Anyway this painting has a nice mood.👍
I really liked how you used the "pencil" type eraser ... It's so effective in creating white spaces in pastel and colored pencil also ... This drawing Is real gem !
Hello buddy how are you? This was lovely to watch,, really great tonal work with your charcoal.. great drawing.. the gate looks amazing and the whole composition just great 😊..another brilliant video.. all the best buddy 😊
Hi Andrew. I’m Christophe from Paris. I subscribed quite a time ago. I love your drawings. I’m very much impressed by the large range of medias you are able to practice (watercolor, oil sticks, pastel, charcoal, oil painting …). Your are a very talented artist. I must say one of the most talented I have ever seen so far on internet. Highly professional work, also full of creativity and sensibility. Not surprising to have been promoted by the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Your UA-cam channel might be also a very usefull guide to guys like me trying to produce some masterpiece in their living room ! May I also tell you that I love your dog Basil (he seems to be the happiest dog of the world) and also (from this side of the channel) your so lovely british accent 😊. Best wishes from Paris and long life to your channel.

that was an amazing demo! Beautiful drawing! i was wondering if there is an issue with the craft blade cutting through the paper. would a credit card or modelling tool work too?
This one was exceptionally beautiful, Andrew! As always thank you for sharing your work... But I'm curious concerning all those light touches of charcoal. What is your process and the product to permanently fix it to the paper? Just a regular fixative? Brand? And how many coats?
Thank you so much Reese. Fixing the charcoal is a real dilemma. I usually give them 1 very light spray and then frame under glass. If they aren’t framed they get several light layers but if I overdo it they go too dark
I have a question; another Charcoal artist uses Acetone, and I'm wondering if the Acetone would compromise the Archival properties of the piece . . . do you know? I did like the actual marks left behind after it evaporated.
Hi Diana I'm not sure about acetone and the long term archival properties. I know and have seen other artists use it and I love the effects. It is always a risk using solvents - but sometimes worth trying
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thank you Andrew for giving me your take on the Acetone. Even more thanks because it's Christmas there in Cornwall.. I loved Cornwall. It was very magical I believe. Happy Christmas from Waldport to the Oregon Coast!

Maybe it’s because of the oils in the skin? I love using my fingers - a great natural tool we have at our disposal

The way you've achieved that vintage look is incredible. Could stare at it for hours.
Thank you very much indeed
Wow!!! If I didn’t see you make it, I would think it’s a black and white film photo 😊. I missed Basil ❤
Thanks Barbara. Basil was enjoying a day at home with my son and daughter 😃

Thank you. Yes I would have to frame behind glass. Charcoal drawings are so delicate

Thank you very much
Did you draw that with your imaganationn??
I had some photos to help me but I used an element of artistic freedom
Amazing art. Thanks .. want to know what kind of paper to use ?

I would try Fabriano Artistico. It has a light tooth. I prefer smoother paper rather than heavy texture

This is an amazing landscape!! Please what kind of erase is the one you use at min 4:28? Thanks!!
Thank you very much
It was either a putty eraser or a Tombow hard eraser
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks Meredith
How did you get the really thin white lines? Ive never been able to get an eraser that thin. Love it.
Thank you Samantha
I think I used a Tombow eraser and possibly scratching with a blade for thin lines

It is called a Tombow eraser
Good move not to add the trees behind the fence.
