your artworks are simple yet beautiful . I love how every materials and strokes creates different textures and harmonizes as one on the canvas. Hope you don't get tired on shooting and uploading youtube contents, your channel is such a gem . Your creations are masterpieces to my eyes. I'm also a charcoal artist and I hope I can be as good as you.
Hi Andrew. It was great to see your experiment with the casein paint and charcoal. I will definitely have to try it out. It looks like they worked really well together. Have a great weekend! 👍
Thanks Justin. I have just ordered some liquid charcoal which I am looking forward to trying out. I will let you know how it goes. Have fun with the charcoal and have a great summer
Hello Andrew, I love all your demos, and this one combining charcoal and casein in such an expressive way is awesome! I have two questions about your materials: I think your Fabriano paper is hot press? I have that and it always seems too smooth for charcoal and particularly for lots of layering, but that does not appear to be an issue for you. I guess you find it has the right amount of tooth? My second question is about that jumbo charcoal stick you’re using. Is that Nitram? Thanks so much, ~Dawn
So good! Really nice to see you doing this. And the commentary really help to understand your process. Keep on uploading art Videos ! You art is amazing!
Thank you - Casein paint is made with milk. Pigment is mixed with milk casein (milk protein), and is a fast-drying, water-soluble medium used by artists
Thank you Bill, how's Seattle? Jimi Hendrix was from there wasn't he? For this drawing I used a sheet cut from FABRIANO : ACCADEMIA DRAWING : ROLL : 90LB : 200GSM : ACID FREE : 1.5X10M I also paint onto this with oils although I prime it first with gesso. Hope this helps. All the best - Andrew
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Amazing! was worried at first with the amount of water that you used, but the paper hold pretty well. I love this drawing. Did you ever tried liquid charcoal or graffiti that's also watercolor?
@@Ppzinha Thank you - I was very impressed by how well the paper withstood the soaking. I haven't tried liquid charcoal - is it fun to use? I do use water soluble graphite and I really like that
Thanks for watching. It’s a paint made with milk protein as the binder. With oil paints it’s usually linseed oil but casein uses milk. It dries fast and is permanent when dry
I loved watching your process. I tend to tighten up so much when painting but using charcoals and graphite like this is a great loosening up technique for me. The casein paint was interesting. Do you make it yourself and would you consider doing a short video of the process in the future? Did you mix white pigment with it? Your paint looked a bit transparent so I’m wondering if you can mix to your own preference?
Thank you for your comments. I use Richeson casein ready made in tubes. I think the process of making it, is time consuming and I’m not sure how long the paint would last? Maybe if I used casein for all of my paintings it would definitely be something to look into 😃
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt oh great! That makes sense. Yes I looked at a recipe. Not difficult but defs easier to buy a tube and get to experimenting. Thanks for replying.
This is really informative and cool to watch! Great painting 🎨 Do you think this technique would work well with acrylic? I want to try experimenting with water and charcoal like in the video!
Hello! I loved your drawing and I learned some new techniques I can try! I got so inspired by a black and white drawing by Chris van allsberg at the beginning but i had no idea how he could put so dark color and white at once in a drawing. I tried some pencils but still i loved the extreme(?)darkness charocol can give but wondered how can we control the charcoal when we need to draw such a details. Then when I saw your drawing experiment, i came to know that we could add water to charcol and use white directly on it. I love it how the rough marks from Charcoal pencil disappears and become like a background when you added water...have you tried drawing something with very much details like grass on the ground or leaves?
Thank you very much for your comments. Another technique is to use masking fluid (like watercolour artists use to keep the white). You carefully peel it off at the end. I haven’t drawn grass for a long time but if I did I would just suggest a few blades in amongst many tones
Learn to speak 100 times less but using the right words. The real job of a real designer is to learn to put in less and less, not more and more. My eyes hurt to see such a shit. The work of a mason, like the workers who put tar on the roads, no delicacy, nothing big! it sucks!

Very inspiring to watch all the different types of mark making there, dry charcoal, watery drips, fine marks with the rigger - really lovely.
Thank you Sarah - it was great fun
Hi Andrew love how you experiment with different mediums, very inspiring. Thank you❤

You feel your way around and within the paper with this expressive style approach marvellous 🤩
Thank you so much Sam 😀
Beautiful.
Thank you so much 😊
hello, nice work- love your subjects, will you then Fix this with a spray fixative?
Thank you very much. If I spray fixative on it will be very lightly as it alters the finish. Usually I leave it and frame under glass
Very helpful to see you work, am sort of moving slowly into charcoal😂
Thank you very much Susana - I used to hate the 'feel' of charcoal. Didn't like the dryness of the sticks but now I'm over that I love it
this is really inspiring for me - I'm really trying to get 'looser' with my work - esp charcoal - I love the idea of 'art out of chaos':)...
Thank you Robin. I used to illustrate books which required realist type of paintings and drawings so it's been quite a challenge to loosen up my work.
Just came across this video. Loved it.
Thank you Robin. I love charcoal - just wish I had more time to experiment with it
Great technique. Are you working on watercolor paper?
Thank you. I’m using a hot pressed heavyweight watercolour paper for this one

The giant charcoal is Nitram. I don’t like too much texture in the paper so this Fabriano Academia works well for me 😃

Hello andrew, quick question, can i use white acrylic in the same manner that you use casein in this painting instead? Iam a big fan of your work!
Thank you for contacting me. Yes white acrylic would work well instead of casein 👍🏻
Nice one mr.Andrew, i liked and subs, will follow you. Thanks for share your work. Salut u from Turkey mr

Loved this combination and your free style too. How would you seal this surface? Thanks!
Thank you Kathy. I might try a light spray of fixative and then protect under glass if framing for display
Perfect

Hi, do you and how would you mount this onto a wood panel?
I would probably put a window mount around the edges. It would need to be mounted on a wood panel before starting drawing
