As a 6 year old in 1969 - got to see the Senators that summer - with Ted Williams as manager - the stadium had just been re-named to 'RFK' a few months earlier. Then that fall - got to see the Skins - with Vince Lombardi as coach. Sonny Jurgensen was QB and was already an 'old vet' - but at the top of his game. Lombardi really brought out the best in him - and the team. The franchise had its best record in more than a decade - but sadly, Lombardi would die of cancer the next summer.
At one time, in its glory days of the Gibbs era, it literally rocked. And I'll always remember the CBS NFL Today open during that era, with Brent Musburger exclaiming, "You are looking LIVE at sold-out RFK Stadium in our nation's capital! Sold out for the (fill in the blank) consecutive time!"

Joe Gibbs and the Redskins just beat the hell out of Dallas and I swore RFK Stadium was going to collapse from the fans jumping up and down and screaming like I never heard before. I won tickets to a playoff game back in the early 90s Skins vs Falcons was like 33°and rain and sleet sold out and like you said literally rocking was also my first NFL game of which I've been to over 30 now between Atlanta and Charlotte but no game ever topped that experience.

I got to go to many Nationals games at RFK before Nats Park was built. Sure it was a dump, but because it was a dump tickets were cheap and beer prices were reasonable, so many good times were had!

My favorite baseball memory happened at rfk. Andruw Jones breaking the braves single season home run record, then watching chipper and andruw go back to back in the 9th off Chad cordero to pretty much sew up their 14th consecutive division title. 9/11/05. Good times
I"m 65 and I've been going to RFK stadium most of my life. My favorite baseball player when I was young was Frank Howard. For the Redskins, I remember watching Sonny, Billy, Larry, and Charley. When they tear down RFK stadium, it will be one of the saddest days of my life.

Fans in RFK were so loud rooting for the then Redskins, the team would get penalized yards because the opposing team couldn't hear their quarterback's signal calls.
True enough. I managed to snag a couple tickets for a game or two each season and I ALWAYS ended up coming to work on Monday with laryngitis. I can't begin to tell you how many beanie hats, sweatshirts, and tshirts I had back then. I think half my wardrobe was burgundy and gold!
this is a great series. keep em coming. i was in minnesota for work and drove by the stadium the day they tore down the metrodome. with the roof collapse its probably a good story also. and the saints stadium would be good just for history with katrina and i think there was even murders during the hurricane inside .
I loved watching Redskins games at RFK. It leant a certain gritty virtue to the DC team. Guys like Earnest Byner, John Riggins, Gerald Riggs, Sonny Jorgensen, Mark Rypien, the Hogs, Charles Mann, Wilbur Marshall, Art Monk, and Darrell Green always made me feel like the Redskins were a bit of a federal, all-American team.
I'm a cowboy fan and I remember in the 80s when that stadium was deafening. All of those Washington players you mentioned were really good and more of them should be in the Hall of Fame.
1983-1984, the Federals moved to Orlando in 1985. That last year of USFL, I rooted for the Baltimore Stars who played their home games in College Park.

RFK rocked. Just off of the BW parkway, easy to get to. An awesome football atmosphere. Great for concerts as well. Easy to get to from the Maryland suburbs.

All pro sports owners should have to pay for any stadiums, so they won't leave like they do. Taxpayers should not be stuck with the bill and teams move to another city, state.
It's been 25 since the Washington Football Team (formerly Redskins) played at RFK Stadium. Their last game at RFK was on Dec 22, 1996. I have a copy of the playbook titled "Fairwell to RFK"
UA-cam is full of 3 and 5 minutes videos that were quickly put together and just meant to get as many views in as short amount of time possible. It's refreshing that this series dives deep and tells the complete story without taking any shortcuts or hiring a cheap narrator.

Use to watch the senators play there when I was a kid. Was an usher during the. 70s, saw Peles last game there. Played the national 16 yr old Jamaican soccer. team there, before a diplomats game. Great memories and nothing better that a 50 yd line season ticket when the cowboys came to town.
I watched the Eagles play the Redskins there in December 1981. Redskins won 15-13. I will never forget that game or the energy in that crowd. Great time.

My dad would pack us up and take us to the game(s) every time Washington played a double header. Unlike today, you only needed a ticket for the first game and it was good through the second. We'd bring our own popcorn and peanuts and we'd get hotdogs and sodas there. (We didn't have a lot of money and dad managed to get a lot for his dollar back then!) In fact, if you came in late (after the start of the 3rd inning I believe), you could get in for $3.00. My memory is a little foggy on that but I think that's right. I remember every time I walked into that stadium and saw that green grass for the first time, my heart would race. Also saw the Beatles there in '66. I'll never forget that wonderful night. So many great memories of that place.
Saw some great concerts there. They know how to party in D.C. I’ve been to concerts all over the country and the fans there were the most enthusiastic by far.
I saw the Stones there in 1994... I swear there was noooo rules in that parking lot, no security or cops in sight, and therefore... uhh yeah, I'll stop there.
When I was 16, my friends and I went down there to see a NKOTB concert, and we had a blast! We literally caught the last train out that night, and I have a picture of the whole Belphi-Park Posse piled three deep on top of each other because it was so crowded. Great times, and I wish they could just renovate it instead of building another. There’s a Metro stop right there so we don’t have to fight the DC traffic, too. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take the public transportation than fight the city traffic!
I know in the video I said we didn't need to have a national stadium but I still think it would be so badass to have a 100,000 seat patriotic themed stadium in DC. Just badass. Can you imagine going to a 4th of July concert there like wow.
In the early 1900s, baseball, cricket, and soccer were major sports watched by more people in person than attend any sporting event now. Those are the only 3 I know of that meet that criteria, but I'm sure there are others. Sports were a big deal back then, it's ahistorical to pretend otherwise.

I grew up going to RFK only for soccer games. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out it was initially for the Redskins let alone for the olympics. It was a great stadium and I know for a fact that it would be a success now a days if it weren’t for the fact that it was in the ghetto part of the city. No one would metro there, meaning you had to drive there. And in those days before 295 went all the way across the Anacostia, the traffic was ridiculous, especially since most games were held during the week at rush hour times. And parking prices were wild. Overall, the location is what killed RFK.
I worked construction in DC and knew and worked with many who worked on the 'RFK' stadium. In fact I worked with the man who was the lead man on the project. He told us how difficult it was to get all those cement curves correctly laid out and built.
I saw Jerry Garcia play a couple of tunes with Sting as an opener to a Dead show there. That was one of my unforgettable moments in life. EDIT* - the date was June 26, 1993. That was a HOT show. Not temperature, but jammin'. Bruce Hornsby was sitting in on keyboards for the show.

I was also raised as a Redskins fan since I was born in Virginia and a lot of my family was from there but I was born in 1985 so I can just barely remember their last Superbowl victory. 1999 was the last season where I felt really proud of the team and my new one became the Titans since I grew up south of Nashville.

I WAS a die-hard Redskins fan. Never got to see a game at RFK, once stood in the parking lot with cash in hand begging for someone to sell me a ticket at almost any cost.. Finally got inside to see a Nats game in 06'. Given the way things have gone, the artists formerly known as The Skins should have just moved to another city and changed their name when they left RFK... oh wait.
I live less than a mile away from RFK -- bike past it all the time. You know it's there and remember why it's there but it's kinda just faded into the background. Only time I venture down there on purpose is to check out the Sunday farmers market and to compete in the occasional crit lol that said, I do think the city entertained plans recently to bring the WFT back to DC

Used to watch the Senators and Skins there when I was a kid. Good times. It was almost impossible to score tickets to any Skins game. They had a massive and years long waitlist for season tickets. So seeing a game was a BFD. Last game I saw was Wash VS the Vikings in the playoffs. It was insanely cold that day, like once every ten yrs cold. First play of the game Riggins took the ball through a solid wall of purple and emerged on the other side dragging a few of them. He picked up about 15 yards or so but the die was cast. He ran for 185 yards that day. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year if I am not mistaken. The good old days. That being said, its a small and very old stadium. A great place to watch a game, but owners demand massive facilities these days.
I was at the last game at RFK. I was one of the people that rushed the field and took our seats and pieces of the grass. I was a Senior in High School. I miss that Stadium. A piece of the Sk(Football Team almost slipped) died when we left that stadium. It was one of the TOUGHEST places to play in. the bleachers literally moved and rattled like they were gonna collapse the whole game. Ask ANY Cowboy player throught the Triplets era (Aikman himself will say that). Also grew up going to the annual O's game in RFK. Saw a bus crash into old Saab right at the Subway entrance in 92' (you will never forget seeing crazy accidents like that, bus ran a red light like and idiot)
Why can't they renovate it? I just dont see why it has to be torn down when it can be renovated instead. I mean look at the Superdome for example. it was built 46 years ago and with renovations throughout the years it is pretty modern. In fact its currently under another renovation as we speak. The Superdome is a prime example that you dont need to build a new 2 billion dollar stadium, when you can renovate an old stadium to become modern.
This lost me when it stated mentioning sport and the US in the same sentence. At best the US indulged in pastimes that could provide a distraction between the advert main events. Now it's been the instrumental at almost destroying sport completely.
Unfortunately, The Washington Football Team has not had the same success at FedEx Field in Maryland as it had at RFK. Although they made the playoffs a few times in the past 25 years, they've not been to the Super Bowl. There is a rumor they are looking at land in Northern Virginia for a new football stadium
Since the land is federally owned, you can bet that anything major that will be done on that site will take at least 10-15 years to come to fruition! If the WFT is planning to move to a new stadium here in 2027, they're already too late!!

I drive past RFK every night on my way to work at the Capitol and have seen it slowly fall apart. They supposedly have a $2M budget for upkeep but clearly none of that $2M goes to buying even a gallon of paint. The flaking exterior with bigger and bigger rust patches seems to grow daily. The WFT will NEVER return to DC, not while Dan Snyder owns the team. He will never return the team to anywhere inside DC lines because then the DC council will have say over the team. They are arrogant enough to think they had a say a few years ago when the name controversy happened because the team had Washington in its name. What do you think they'll try if the team was actually located in DC? Dan Snyder is one if the worst team owners in all of professional sports but I can't fault him for not wanting the DC council to have any say in his team.

@@nothanksguy thats pure fantasy, with multi-purpose stadiums you cannot have the best sightlines for both sports, RFK is also too small to allow for adding a club level, restaurants and luxury suites not to mention its seating capacity is way too small. Completely inadequate for a modern stadium.
All pro sports owners should have to pay for any stadiums, so they won't leave like they do. Taxpayers should not be stuck with the bill and teams move to another city, state.
It's been 25 since the Washington Football Team (formerly Redskins) played at RFK Stadium. Their last game at RFK was on Dec 22, 1996. I have a copy of the playbook titled "Fairwell to RFK"
UA-cam is full of 3 and 5 minutes videos that were quickly put together and just meant to get as many views in as short amount of time possible. It's refreshing that this series dives deep and tells the complete story without taking any shortcuts or hiring a cheap narrator.

Use to watch the senators play there when I was a kid. Was an usher during the. 70s, saw Peles last game there. Played the national 16 yr old Jamaican soccer. team there, before a diplomats game. Great memories and nothing better that a 50 yd line season ticket when the cowboys came to town.

I watched the Eagles play the Redskins there in December 1981. Redskins won 15-13. I will never forget that game or the energy in that crowd. Great time.

My dad would pack us up and take us to the game(s) every time Washington played a double header. Unlike today, you only needed a ticket for the first game and it was good through the second. We'd bring our own popcorn and peanuts and we'd get hotdogs and sodas there. (We didn't have a lot of money and dad managed to get a lot for his dollar back then!) In fact, if you came in late (after the start of the 3rd inning I believe), you could get in for $3.00. My memory is a little foggy on that but I think that's right. I remember every time I walked into that stadium and saw that green grass for the first time, my heart would race. Also saw the Beatles there in '66. I'll never forget that wonderful night. So many great memories of that place.
Saw some great concerts there. They know how to party in D.C. I’ve been to concerts all over the country and the fans there were the most enthusiastic by far.
I saw the Stones there in 1994... I swear there was noooo rules in that parking lot, no security or cops in sight, and therefore... uhh yeah, I'll stop there.
When I was 16, my friends and I went down there to see a NKOTB concert, and we had a blast! We literally caught the last train out that night, and I have a picture of the whole Belphi-Park Posse piled three deep on top of each other because it was so crowded. Great times, and I wish they could just renovate it instead of building another. There’s a Metro stop right there so we don’t have to fight the DC traffic, too. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take the public transportation than fight the city traffic!
I know in the video I said we didn't need to have a national stadium but I still think it would be so badass to have a 100,000 seat patriotic themed stadium in DC. Just badass. Can you imagine going to a 4th of July concert there like wow.

In the early 1900s, baseball, cricket, and soccer were major sports watched by more people in person than attend any sporting event now. Those are the only 3 I know of that meet that criteria, but I'm sure there are others. Sports were a big deal back then, it's ahistorical to pretend otherwise.

I grew up going to RFK only for soccer games. It wasn’t until I was older that I found out it was initially for the Redskins let alone for the olympics. It was a great stadium and I know for a fact that it would be a success now a days if it weren’t for the fact that it was in the ghetto part of the city. No one would metro there, meaning you had to drive there. And in those days before 295 went all the way across the Anacostia, the traffic was ridiculous, especially since most games were held during the week at rush hour times. And parking prices were wild. Overall, the location is what killed RFK.

I worked construction in DC and knew and worked with many who worked on the 'RFK' stadium. In fact I worked with the man who was the lead man on the project. He told us how difficult it was to get all those cement curves correctly laid out and built.
I saw Jerry Garcia play a couple of tunes with Sting as an opener to a Dead show there. That was one of my unforgettable moments in life. EDIT* - the date was June 26, 1993. That was a HOT show. Not temperature, but jammin'. Bruce Hornsby was sitting in on keyboards for the show.

I won tickets to a playoff game back in the early 90s Skins vs Falcons was like 33°and rain and sleet sold out and you could actually feel the place rocking when the fans went nuts was also my first NFL game of which I've been to over 30 now between Atlanta and Charlotte but no game ever topped that experience.

I went to/worked at a lot of concerts there. The pictures from the Tibet Freedom concert brought me back, some girl got hit by lighting on one of the days. The last event I was there for was working at the 911 concert, that was thrown together so quickly after the attack, it was a very long day.
Raised as a Redskin fan as a kid. Thanks to my father. Changed teams over the years, and been a Seahawk fan for over 35 years. (Kingdome, hint hint..LOL) ...Will absolutely admit watching Redskin games in the 80's with my late father, nothing like it. That stadium was such a great one. Great vid!!
I was also raised as a Redskins fan since I was born in Virginia and a lot of my family was from there but I was born in 1985 so I can just barely remember their last Superbowl victory. 1999 was the last season where I felt really proud of the team and my new one became the Titans since I grew up south of Nashville.

The stadium also hosted two US women’s teams matches (1999 quarterfinals v.s Germany, 2003 group stage North Korea) and probably others.
The 1999 quarterfinal was at FedEx Field.

It was classified by the American Soccer Pyramid as the top-tier level, Division 1 professional soccer league in North America from 1968-1984. In a nutshell, it was that time-period's equivalent to the modern day Major League Soccer organization.

my brother and i drove down from philly to go to the Chocolate Jam all day concert at RFK Funkeldic was the headliner with Bootsy, Raydio,Mothers Finest, Rick James, and i cant remember the other groups.... i do remember the fireworks in the afternoon heat and humidity of a DC summer. cherry bombs being thrown off the top deck and the noise was deafening.. that was 1970s fun, today the bomb squad would be called in. lol..
I WAS a die-hard Redskins fan. Never got to see a game at RFK, once stood in the parking lot with cash in hand begging for someone to sell me a ticket at almost any cost.. Finally got inside to see a Nats game in 06'. Given the way things have gone, the artists formerly known as The Skins should have just moved to another city and changed their name when they left RFK... oh wait.

I live less than a mile away from RFK -- bike past it all the time. You know it's there and remember why it's there but it's kinda just faded into the background. Only time I venture down there on purpose is to check out the Sunday farmers market and to compete in the occasional crit lol that said, I do think the city entertained plans recently to bring the WFT back to DC
I’m from Albany, GA it was once called the good life city. It had many factories like Cooper Tires, Bobs Candy, Miller Brewing, P&G etc. Most of which are now abandoned due to companies opting for cheaper labor. Might be a source of content. Maybe not lol

Used to watch the Senators and Skins there when I was a kid. Good times. It was almost impossible to score tickets to any Skins game. They had a massive and years long waitlist for season tickets. So seeing a game was a BFD. Last game I saw was Wash VS the Vikings in the playoffs. It was insanely cold that day, like once every ten yrs cold. First play of the game Riggins took the ball through a solid wall of purple and emerged on the other side dragging a few of them. He picked up about 15 yards or so but the die was cast. He ran for 185 yards that day. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year if I am not mistaken. The good old days. That being said, its a small and very old stadium. A great place to watch a game, but owners demand massive facilities these days.

I was at the last game at RFK. I was one of the people that rushed the field and took our seats and pieces of the grass. I was a Senior in High School. I miss that Stadium. A piece of the Sk(Football Team almost slipped) died when we left that stadium. It was one of the TOUGHEST places to play in. the bleachers literally moved and rattled like they were gonna collapse the whole game. Ask ANY Cowboy player throught the Triplets era (Aikman himself will say that). Also grew up going to the annual O's game in RFK. Saw a bus crash into old Saab right at the Subway entrance in 92' (you will never forget seeing crazy accidents like that, bus ran a red light like and idiot)
Why can't they renovate it? I just dont see why it has to be torn down when it can be renovated instead. I mean look at the Superdome for example. it was built 46 years ago and with renovations throughout the years it is pretty modern. In fact its currently under another renovation as we speak. The Superdome is a prime example that you dont need to build a new 2 billion dollar stadium, when you can renovate an old stadium to become modern.

Unfortunately, The Washington Football Team has not had the same success at FedEx Field in Maryland as it had at RFK. Although they made the playoffs a few times in the past 25 years, they've not been to the Super Bowl. There is a rumor they are looking at land in Northern Virginia for a new football stadium
Since the land is federally owned, you can bet that anything major that will be done on that site will take at least 10-15 years to come to fruition! If the WFT is planning to move to a new stadium here in 2027, they're already too late!!
My Brother in Law was living there and was a sports fan there for many year's and visited a lot of those sites.
The landscape is going to be different when they tear the stadium down. Unfortunately, I only relocated to the DC area in late 2019 from southern California so it feels good reading all the comments from people with treasured memories of RFK

It should be a contemporary amphitheater, or a giant modern walk thru garden like in the movies or even a huge outdoor movie theater.
I drive past RFK every night on my way to work at the Capitol and have seen it slowly fall apart. They supposedly have a $2M budget for upkeep but clearly none of that $2M goes to buying even a gallon of paint. The flaking exterior with bigger and bigger rust patches seems to grow daily. The WFT will NEVER return to DC, not while Dan Snyder owns the team. He will never return the team to anywhere inside DC lines because then the DC council will have say over the team. They are arrogant enough to think they had a say a few years ago when the name controversy happened because the team had Washington in its name. What do you think they'll try if the team was actually located in DC? Dan Snyder is one if the worst team owners in all of professional sports but I can't fault him for not wanting the DC council to have any say in his team.
The "WFC" thing will prove to be the death knell of the NFL.
