People forget how important the Astrodome was. Elvis performed there. Muhammad Ali fought there. Selena gave her best concert there. It’s a place soaked in history and to see it so neglected is truly one of the biggest heartaches of any true houstonian.
i’ve never heard of this structure until today, and I truly think that it should be preserved. It is a beautiful piece of architecture from the 60s in my opinion, and the US needs to learn how to restore and preserve buildings lol
Which was the greatest demise!
That didn't save the historic Deauville in Miami Beach
Nothing lasts forever and there becomes a time when you can't fix old infrastructure for people to be inside safely.

I'm a Houstonian and the Dome is seriously embedded into our love of this city. It's sentimental more than anything else and I would love it if they utilized however they see fit. As long as they keep some of the bones
Hey, how about we do a Museum to the Legend of the Astrodome? I mean it has the history the mayor used to live there, the games, the first game, the history of the AstroTurf. It would be better than it deteriorate like its doing.

I grew up in Houston, this is a historic landmark. Just as Astroworld was, until it’s demise in 2006. It’s funny to look back, the memories will always be in our hearts. I no longer live in Houston, but I can still hear the passing cars from the XLR8, the Texas tornado. The smell of the funnel cakes and hamburgers. The feeling of being a child again, if even for a brief moment.
As a kid i could never remember the name XLR8 and then one random day, it dawned on me... Like an epiphany haha
Yeah the Astrodome was so important to you you left it!

Selena Quintanilla Perez performed there 3 years in a row to sold out crowds. She actually always dreamed of performing there. So it helps a little to know that some of her dreams came true. The fact that she never saw her dream of the English language album realized before her death breaks my heart so a least she got to Rock the Astrodome. Ya know.. 🌹
@@samanthataylor1230 I hate it when people say her name wrong. She used to get aggravated when it happened too..
My idolo SELENA QUINTANILLA : )
She dreamed of performing there because she saw Michael Jackson perform there during his Victory Tour ❤️
@FullyFocused 11 Well aren't you in a great mood. But to answer your question.. Yes, the fact that Selena spent her life wanting to make an English album and when she finally got to, she's murdered before it comes out. Yes that breaks my heart. You know what else breaks my heart, well other than things like 9-11, covid, aids, cancer, etc... Is people like you. Just looking through old comments, looking for hate to spew. Sheesh!! Get a life!! Now have a beautiful day and leave me alone. 💋
The sad thing is Selena is really remembered because of the Jennifer Lopez movie about her.
As a Miami Dolphins fan, I totally understand the Houston fans. My heart broke the day they tore down the Orange Bowl. I lived just a few blocks from the stadium and I have never felt the excitement ever again.
I was a Marlins fan growing up, so I was excited about the new stadium. I was still too small to understand why the Orange Bowl was so important, but I'm grateful my brother took me to a Dolphins game before demolition.
Now as an adult I'm actually a Dolphins fan more than I am a Marlins fan. I was at the game when Tua got hit. It was a nasty moment for all of us.

What a lot of people don't understand about the astrodome, is that it is synonymous with the city of Houston. It's more than just memories. It was a grand design that represents the spirit of the city. It is a symbol, although a decaying one, of our grand dreams. It's a wonderful place and should be kept standing. If I had the money, I would restore it, and hope to make something of it again. Those who saw events there know of it's awesome power. It's more than just a structure. It's a symbol of awe and wonder.
Very well stated!!!!
You can't "restore" everything unfortunately.
@@beyondthedetails it can be though
@@g-mancollections5264 if it “could” it would have.
@@beyondthedetails they've had plans to to do it multiple times. But the investors always pulled away at the last minute because they couldn't see the profit in it. It's just so big that in order to do it, it's going to cost a ton of money. It absolutely "can" be done...the real issue is that it probably "won't."
i grew up asking my mom about the Astrodome all the time, since i wasn't alive when it was functioning aside from Katrina. i love hearing about the stories she tells about the NBA games she'd go to, it sounded so lively and exciting and i wish i could've seen it. thanks for making this video, even now in Houston the Astrodome is such an important piece of history, it had such an infuelnce that i often see people bond over it. amongst all the new buildings, i can't help but stare at it in awe, there's something special about the Astrodome that no other arena in the city has, and its not even in use.

I had relatives that lived in Houston and was a very small boy when we once visited there when the Astrodome was brand new. Went on a tour. I can remember how proud they were of their state of the art stadium back then. Sad now.
I really miss the Astrodome, it’s a shame they didn’t try to update throughout its lifetime so that there wouldn’t be such enormous repair costs. I’ve seen many Astros games there, monster truck shows, and concerts. It was a really cool stadium.

@@ki5aok I don't think so, maybe it was but they're still using both of them.
The real shame here is the loss of Astroworld, which in its heyday was a first class theme park. Modeled after Disneyland, Astroworld was a beautifully landscaped family park with great rides, shows and eateries. Had the city worked with Six Flags, it could have updated and expanded its facilities, including adding a water park. Furthermore, the architecturally significant Astrodome should have been have never been replaced by the generic NRG. Instead, the iconic stadium should have been refurbished and its unique historical value preserved. Investments in the Astrodome and Astroworld could have been complimented by adding hotels, shopping districts and a convention center. The entire complex could have been connected via monorails and sky rides, making the facility easy to navigate and ensuring guests spend their money within its confines. This development would have created one of the country's premiere entertainment destinations, generating millions in revenue and thousands of jobs. Because no leaders had any vision, we are now stuck with the boring NRG, and not much else. Without other unique attractions in the immediate area, there is no reason for visitors to stay and spend. Houston really lost out on this one.
Add a waterpark? Astroworld built a waterpark (Water World) that opened in 1983 on the same property. In the mid 90's the two parks became a one ticket park.
@@geotek1000 Water World needed to be torn down and a real water park added. Apples to oranges.

The Astrodome went from The Eighth Wonder of the World to a Section-Eight Stadium.
@Delusional Surfer Bob Altman did a terrible job with "Popeye." It was a can't-miss character, and Altman screwed up, big time.
@Delusional Surfer Bob Robin Williams had a bad story. They got everything wrong! Popeye loves spinach; in the movie, he had to be force-fed. I think Williams tried very hard to nail the character, with all the mumbling ("I'm no doctor, but I'm losing me patience!") But it wasn't his fault the script was bad.
Being a Houston native, I really loved and agreed with his final comments. The city has a long history of not utilizing the money in a smart way.
There's no fucking urban planning and public transportation is left to die
He just read that somewhere . He didn't even know the dome originally had natural grass
@@ActuallyRocatex dude I know. City planners have gone on record saying that they will not construct a subway due to the high cost of maintenance and high chance of flooding during and after construction. They say they will just double down on trolleys/busses on rails.
@@caboose22320 to be honest the best way to go would be an elevated train system similair to Chicago, that way space can be better utilized and you don't have to worry about flooding.

I spent weeks in Houston after Hurricane Katrina as a volunteer with the Red Cross. Everyday bright and early we would be at the Astrodome and hundreds of busses would come and thousands of victims most with nothing but the clothes on their back would line up outside in the blazing TX heat. We spent entire days and nights just handing out water and food to the ppl in line, reuniting families and loved ones, giving medical treatment, checking people in, handing out supplies, preparing meals, setting up cots like mini shelters for them etc. I distinctly remember one day where I simply stopped for a moment and just took it all in. Cots as far as the eye could see, organized chaos going on all around me and armed National Guard troops stationed everywhere. It’s all so very surreal to think back on now. After one of the worst natural disasters in US history that facility was a literal lifesaver for countless people and that’s how I will always remember it. For just a sports stadium it has had quite a diverse and incredible history.

not sure why they could of just put the budget into the existing Super-dome i am sure with the budge they had they could of made it top notch. Like your little brother on sim city placing all his major building on one street and ask why traffic is so bad in the area.
They did it so they astros and the Texans could have their own spaces to play since the Astrodome was originally a baseball stadium
It makes sense if you know all the facts. There are numerous other buildings on the same site that are still in use. The Houston Rodeo uses other buildings on the site and needed a new stadium for the main events.
Actually, that happens quite often. I still think they should have rennovated the Astrodome though.

So much history in this building..Selena...The bad news bears...part of my childhood
This stadium is so iconic. Selena performed there 3 times and breaking attendance records each time she did. Sucks that the city of Houston won't make an effort to renovate it to its former glory.
Astroworld was NEVER called "Six Flags Houston", it was known as "Six Flags Astroworld" while under the management of Six Flags.
Though literally everyone still called it Astroworld
It opened as astroworld and was later bought by six flags. SIx Flags Houston sounds like board room talk. contrary to what people say...it wasnt closed because 'gangs'...it was closed because of six flags mismanagement lead to the company downsizing. Astroworld was probably its smallest park and had no room to grow, so it couldnt be profitable in the long run. Six Flags looks like they about to do the same thing again...
Someone at Six Flags thought they could demolish the park and sell the land for development at a premium and later found the land wasn’t as “premium” value as they expected it to be. Now it’s a dirt/gravel parking lot.
I had season tickets there for years! The Texas Cyclone was a badass coaster.
It was ONLY known as Astroworld. No one ever called it Six Flags anything, lol.

To be frank, most people probably know more about Selena because of this video than they did before. To suggest that one of the world's most famous buildings is only known because a young singer had a concert there is borderline ridiculous 😅
In defense of the young lady I don't think this is ridiculous it's really just a matter of perception.
Events that happen in our own lifetime tend to take on predominant historical importance and it's just human nature to perceive that thru one's own generation, mankind has at last "arrived".

I'm from Houston, TX, and 44 and this was Definitely a stroll down memory lane. I Was Disgusted to find out that Astroworld was Demolished, which was a part of my Best memories from childhood. I've been to the Astrodome a few times too. Saw Nolan Ryan pitch. Thanks.
I felt the sane way about Memorial stadium in Baltimore MD. Where I saw Johnny Unitas play . Nothing lasts forever.
The Astrodome is still standing!
@@teeyanaramsey2576 yep, and I'm glad.
The XFL Houston team should move their instead of playing at a college stadium
True American unfortunately it’s full of mold and asbestos. :( not the best place to breathe in.
@@strosfan02 Mold and asbestos? Sounds like just the right level of "EXTREME!" the XFL should be going for
@@TimmyTickle One of the funniest and best comments I've ever read on UA-cam, and I've been coming to UA-cam for more than a decade.
Thats what i was thinking! they should remodel it first before they use it though
@@TimmyTickle xfl is better than the nfl. So keep talking out of ur ass
As a Texan, though I may not be from Houston. I thank you for covering such an iconic piece of Texas history.
Keep up the good work!
My dad sent me a postcard from here once and I’ve always been curious about the theme park and the dome so thank you
The Reliant (NRG) stadium looks nice and it has a lot going for it and the design is decent but it doesn’t hold a candle to the Astrodome design
I'm from Houston & I've been inside the Astrodome for it's 50th Anniversary.
Matthew Carrizal I pass by it every day on my way to work remembering the last rodeo that was held inside.
That's cool.
I saw Selena perform here in 1995! Hard to believe the dome is abandoned now!!!
By the way, her last name is pronounced "KEEN-tuh-NEE-uh".
So your a gg allin and selena fan lol
Ivan Gutierrez oh you should see the music I have on my phone. GG Allin and Selena are just the start. 🤣
@@KingTriton1837 that's cool man really diverse musical tastes.
Ivan Gutierrez absolutely! I love music of all kinds!
@@KingTriton1837 my kinda person my musical choices are quite varied as well.
Thank you for doing this one . I’m a huge Selena fan and was curious to know more about the Astrodome🌹💜
I miss it, Astrodome, Astroworld. Waterworld...all of it. Memories for me that I just wish I could relive with my kids today. Very special place
I saw the Astrodome and I clicked so fast
The_Gay _Raccoon same. I always voted against demolishing it. It’s an icon that changed how sports arenas are built.
Same
Me too. Its painful to see the Astrodome the way it is now.
I didn't. I ended up waiting until the next day. 😞
Lol very cool, The_Gay _Racoon
I love how he cant even stop his laughter at the fact they didnt use the astrodome and instead built a 350 million dollar stadium next to it
He barely laughs
No NFL team would want a stadium that seats less than 60K people among other things.
@@Iwannarock79 Reliant Stadium only holds around 70k people
Was that a dick move?
@@surferbri5346 it was kind of a waist of money
Great vid! Thumbs up! I remember driving by while it was being built in '65. It didn't see so massive from our vantage point. But once it got built and I started attending events in the Dome, I could see how massive it was. I saw one Astros game there (wasn't into baseball but went as a favor to my cousin), numerous Oilers games (LOVED MY BLUE!), a handful of concerts, several rodeos and, in 1992, the Republican National Convention. My heart holds very dear memories of the Dome. I'd prefer not to see it torn down. My idea for its usage would be to house animals in need. Like a HUGE SPCA facility with other features besides what SPCA already does, such as permanently housing some animals.
Man as a wrestling fan, I envy the people who were there in the Houston Astrodome for the GREATEST WRESTLEMANIA OF ALL TIME. WRESTLEMANIA X7. 👏
My city! H-Town!🤘
It's so sad to see it just sitting there...
Thanks for the love!
My uncle bought a section of seating at the auction several years ago. He uses them for a home theater!
Isnt becoming a park garage
Sitting*
I liked the video but was sad that as a 12 year old i witnessed the finest wrestlemania ever(2001) in this very stadium with my dad and my best friend(sadly passed on 3rd december 2018)i would ive anything to feel that again
Lucky! You witnessed a golden piece of wrestling history!
Damn bro your friend was young rip to him what happened to him if you don't mind me asking
Car crash I'm afraid
@@BoyleJr thanks
For your time may he be in a better place
Sorry man..but you'll apways have the memory
That was awesome. So much history at the astrodome.
My first time at the Astrodome was a pre-season game between the Bears (with Gale Sayers) and the Oilers. Saw lots of Astro's games and Oiler's games over the decades. Most memorable was a weekend series at the end of a season in the 70's when Cincinnati's Big Red Machine came and played a series that would decide the division. Astros won the first two games but lost on Sunday (with the obligatory controversial call at home plate). Still haven't been to a game at Reliant/NRG, though I did use to play flyball with my dogs at Reliant/NRG center in the same parking lot. It's unlikely now because I have moved across the country. I hope the Astrodome finds a new purpose going forward.
I was in the Astro dome less than a year ago, and it’s now a storage facility. I was able to walk to the center of it and imagine a rock concert and it was still pretty mesmerizing.
Its crazy how Bright Sun Films doesn't have 1 million subscribers after making 47 episodes of abandoned.
fantastic channel
Went there as a 12 yo kid in 1967. We took a guided tour and then saw the Dodgers play. Sandy Koufax pitched. Also went to Astro World. What wonderful memories.
Saw my 1st major league baseball game there in early 70's. What an experience!
Jake: Astroworld
Me: starts to here the beat of sicko mode
??
Y4123 Travis Scott released an album awhile back called Astroworld, the name paying tribute to the theme park he loved going to as a kid, him being from Houston. One of the songs in the album is called Sicko Mode
@@TSO_Persian oh
Learn grammar please and thanks
Beat King Made Astroworld 1st. Travis Scott did it 2nd.
*Houston city:* mhmh, the Astrodome is being called 'dated' yet they still love this place. We have all this money, what do we do with it?
*Anyone with common sense:* Why not remodel and update the Astrodome to be more appealing.
*Houston city:* Build an entirely new stadium literally on the backdoor of the Astrodome? PERFECT!
*Anyone with common sense:* Wait, no..!
*Houston city:* I am a genius let's do it!!
The problem is that the people who vote for these big ignorant decisions are fair - weather Houstonians. They only recently moved here and after they make a good enough profit will leave, but will add to the destruction of Houston with their input.
@Scoobie yep
@Scoobie I heard that it was never paid off completely, don't know if that's true or not,
Just an eyesore from 610
@capacitance-rca1981 Smells can be dealt with. You've heard of baking soda and such?
If you can clean up a murdee scene with rotted corpses, ANYTHING can be cleaned.
Asbestos? Yeah, also no major. It's covered up (on purpose) to keep it intact or torn up entirely every day. There's all kinds of people who do that for a living.
Normally, you leave it and keep people away from it until it's unavoidable. If you don't fool with it and it's intact, it's 🙂
The stuff from the early days is almost completely indestructible. Your grandmother probably still has it in her house if it wasn't remodeled.
Armstrong put it in flooring right up until 1984, I have an email from them saying it flat-out...even tho we knew it was dangerous 100+ years ago.
I have still have the certificate that was given to me when I attended the last game at Colt Stadium in 1964. It's got a cheesy b&w aerial photo of the Astrodome with "Goodbye Colt Stadium, Hello Astrodome!" in caps. Colt Stadium was hastily built in 1961 for the Colt's 1962 debut. The Colts were one of two new NL expansion teams that year. The other team was the NY Mets. The Sportswriters predicted the Colts would wind up in dead last (10th) place that first year. They actually edged out the Mets and the Cubs and finished in 8th place.
Our beautiful SELENA performed there. She set world records for three years. Now the silent all you hear not SELENA'S BEAUTIFUL VOICE. HER DREAM CAME TRUE TO PERFORM THERE.
Ugh I miss Astroworld. It breaks my heart every time I see where it use to be.
Same! A part of my childhood is gone.
I remember taking Coke cans with the coupon printed on the side so that I could buy an entrance and get a entrance for my friend for free. 🤣🤣

I’m from Minnesota, but went to college in Texas. My roommate was from Houston & grew up right by the Astrodome. I believe in the 5th ward area. I remember going home with him on a break from college & driving right by the Astrodome, I was in amazement at how cool it looked! Wish I could’ve went inside it…
