***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out a new video every Wednesday morning! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I'm remembering one of the first ig posts I saw from you showing your empty house on salt spring. You'd never seen it empty before bc you bought it from horders. As an ocean lover, I didn't understand leaving the seemingly majestic island, but I get it now. Seeing your family grow from the little cabin at your sister's to this large homestead! I'm excited for whatever is next for your family! Blessings!!!
I still love the ocean, but I also love our life here.
I grew up on the ocean and now can deer and turkey hunt from the dining room table. I get it. 🙂 I've enjoyed watching your family grow and have learned so much from you. I am praying for a quick sale on your homestead.
Thank you for being so kind and sweet God Bless you and your family
I love watching your chore’s videos! Your kiddos are so adorable! Congratulations on your new home. Very happy for you all.

Love this video! I’ve watched it at least twice and I’ll probably watch it again when I get a milk cow.
Wow thank you for your kind words!
You have a big adventure ahead of you! I love your house & property but if the next home will provide more opportunities, go for it. God will always lead you in the right direction. Keeping you in my prayers for a peaceful transition!🤗❤🙏❤

Congratulations! I'm excited to share your journey via youtube! How is the family taking the move? I hope you have a garden space waiting for you 😁
Thanks. Everyone seems really excited about the move! Might be too late to plant anything this year sadly!
Thats funny, 4 on the 4th of the 4th month. Happy birthday gorgeous girl.
Gosh Amos is getting such a big boy, so cute.
An advantage of milking into those taller buckets is less dirt can get kicked into the milk when the cows move their feet.
Yes, Amos is not a baby anymore.
Very true about the taller buckets!!!
Hi Kate. Love your videos. Could you please leave an Amazon link for the reusable coffee filter that works it the gallon jars. Thank you so much
Sorry, this was an old coffee filter that we had in the house. But I think it's a fairly standard sized one. I would suggest measuring the span of the gallon jar before going on Amazon. Or you could go to the thrift store?
Happy Birthday Rowan. Congratulations on the new property. Hope all goes well with selling this home.
Thank you!
Wow! You are fast! It takes us an hour to milk…. From the time we grab the pot to the time the milk goes in the fridge.
Well remember Jessa is a three teat milker 🤗
Congratulations on your new place! ❤Prayers your house sells quickly!🙏🏼🙏🏼xxoo
Thank you so much!!
Congratulations and God bless.
Thank you!
Wow, nice!! Congratulations 🎊! I'm 6 months in on my offer and loan process..... island time!! 😂😁 you surprised us all with that bombshell!! Super excited to see this all happen! 👐
Also, (if possible) can you please cover the essential needs to start keeping a dairy cow. Has that changed much since you last video, in regards to the soon to be banned antibiotics in June. Thinking ahead on what I may need before it's unavailable for usda new regulations. Thanks so much for all your informative vlogs!! You're appreciated, Kate!!
Thanks! We are excited too.
We got out of the farm stuff but I miss that sound of the milk hitting the milk bucket 😊👍🏼
All we farm now is cats and they are too hard to milk🤣jk
Hahaha yes I love the sound of the milk hitting the bucket too!
Happy birthday sweety my birthday was 2 days later I wish I was a child again congratulations on your brilliant news is the land bigger for more animals I wish I could do this but in Birmingham UK no land just a little garden n but got 4 rescue cats and a puppy grow veg in tubs and fruit plus salad god bless you all
Happy birthday! Sounds like you have a lot on the go yourself! Thanks for joining us here.
Wow! That's big news!
wow You should go into making the spreadable cream cheese can't get dairy land here anymore And I and I need it to make my cheesecakes 'cause it's only the best Island farms crappy
We also use 5 gal pail
No time to take two trips from barn with stainless pails
Totally!
❤ I love your videos! Are you doing any more mugs? I love the hoe your own row! Looking forward to the next video!
How many time it takes to milk ?
What hormone is present when milking the animal?
It’s takes about 5-10 minutes to machine milk. Oxytocin is the hormone that is present.
No garden this year? That will change how your family eats. I have heard that all mortgages in Canada are on a variable interest rate. That would scare me.
Yes it will be crazy not growing anything!!! You can get a locked in mortgage rate in Canada.
How do you not have a ton of mice eating your grains or seeds? We have mice in our barn. I put everything in tin trash cans. My cats don’t do enough culling. 😂😂
I think our cats are great hunters. We don’t set out traps and (fingers crossed) we don’t have a ton of mice around.
Where do you get your Redmond salt and loose mineral? What is the brand name of mineral? I live in Nova Scotia and can't find either one?
We get our Redmond salt from local feed store. For minerals you would have to find a locally formatted one. Maybe at a local feed store they have some information on it?
does she produce less because of 3 teats
No she produces as much as she would with four working teats
I know you can feed cow milk or whey to the pigs and chickens can you give it to goats and steers too?
Ive heard of whey to bottle calves (not to replace milk but supplement) but not others
Do you pasteurize your milk??
No we consume ram
You all seriously need some large gravel for the road by the barn!
Yes, but we would need a lot as "mud season" just sucks it all in
I'm curious: why are you storing eggs in the fridge?
I live in England and we don't store eggs in the fridge here.
I understand that commercial eggs in the US/Canada are washed so they do have to be refrigerated - but - aren't these farm-fresh eggs with the bloom intact?
We store the eggs in the fridge if they are dirty and we have to wash them. The clean ones go in cartons and into our Coolroom.
I'm curious....what do you do in England to help the eggs stay clean? We regularly change the bedding in the nesting boxes but the chickens are out scratching in the grass, dirt and muck and track it into the coop.
@@VenisonforDinner Ah yes. I understand now. Thanks.
I can only really say what I do. I can't speak for other people. Personally, I have my (4) hens confined to a 2.m * 2.5m * 2.5m covered area at the moment (we've had intermittent confinement notices from APHA warning about avian influenza H5N1 from migratory birds for the last couple of years so it's become a routine). They have a nesting area where they lay their eggs. This is 5-6" deep with pine shavings. On the whole, the eggs are clean but we will get a few that have a little soil on them if it's been raining heavily (I'd love to know if anyone has had any success training chickens to wipe their feet before laying). I just put those eggs to one side and eat them myself. They're never very dirty so I let it dry and wipe them immediately before use.
I also have ~40 quail and their eggs are smaller but often get dirty. These are more of problem. Since I am the only person who eats them in my family I just try to cycle through the dirty ones asap and water glass the clean ones. I'll get to these when they stop laying over winter.
Do you have a new Homestead?
Almost. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
Hey first here I think.
