    ***** About Venison for Dinner *****
    Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
    We put out a new video every Wednesday morning! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

    Flip your milk jars upside down when you put them on your shelves, then they will be clean when you need them. That's how do it with my canning jars.

    Would love to see a "spend the day with me" type video where we get to see all the tedious things like getting cows up and washing machine etc. I know it would be a long video, but very helpful I think.

    My husband was just saying that he wants to see your milker in full, and then you posted this!
    Also, our cow is about to give birth: discharge for several days, bagged up, but she just keeps eating --- the dang cow just won't pop! (We're also on extra pins and needles because she's beyond enormous and her last pregnancy was twins that aborted.)
    As always, thank you so much for all the teaching you offer to us newbies!

    We bottle feed all calves-beef and dairy for the first week then pail train them. We also start them off with a handful of straight oats at a week. By 2 weeks we switch them over to calf mana and hay along with getting pail fed milk from their momma until 12 weeks then they are weaned.

    If you fold your inflation properly you won't lose suction in your machine.
    Hook your plug chain over one of the other inflation vacume lines ( on the one is closest to Jessa's bum teat inflation) this way you have it attached no rolling around on the barn floor
    We milked during -25° we place a hand towel dipped in HOT water and squeezed over the pulsater

    What do you do with the calves? I know you mentioned you wanted bull calves to raise for meat. What would you do with bull calves you didn't want? What are the options? Also what will you do with your new heifer calves? And what are the options there?

    • @VenisonforDinner
      @VenisonforDinner  9 місяців тому +1

      If we dont want them we sell them to someone else who bottle raises. We are raising the heifers to keep until further notice.

    White house on the hill channel had a cow that had so much trouble getting pregnant. One of their wonderful viewers,some expert on cows came all the way from another state and picked up their cow and kept it a long time until she finally got pregnant. It didn’t work artificially with semen but it finally worked with a bull. I don’t know if they found out why the cow had so much trouble but she just had a calf this week.😊

    This is all such good information, but how did you learn it? I've been following you for a few months and literally watched all your past videos, you have so much knowledge, where did you get it? Trial and error? Internet/research? A mentor?.....?

    • @VenisonforDinner
      @VenisonforDinner  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. I've learned from all of the above. I got my first chickens when I was 12, pigs shortly after that, then my first cow at 14. I've always been a bit of a sponge for knowledge. I'm not afraid to ask questions, seek out mentors and while I don't like to make mistakes, I've certainly learned a lot from the ones I've made.

    Are you on septic? Doesn’t the bleach kill the bacteria in the septic system? I was told not to use bleach in my septic. I am getting ready to begin milking this year and Zi am sure cleaning with bleach might be easier/safer. We only dump bleach water outside when I clean animal waterers.
    Just wondering any suggestions. Thanks

      we have a lagoon which is kind of like a giant open septic tank? its less sketchy than it seems and perfectly legal...anyhow you do want to limit how much you dump down the drain BUT i flush enough other things that feed the bacteria that I'm not worried about it because our lagoon is huge

    How do you deal with garbage removal so rural?

    • @VenisonforDinner
      @VenisonforDinner  9 місяців тому +1

      We have a garbage dump about 20 minutes away. That's where the free store is too!

  • @CameoFarmer
    @CameoFarmer 9 місяців тому

    Are you on septic? If so how do you handle food waist in the drains? I just moved rural, have septic and have been washing my sourdough starter jar and baking bowls in a bucket in the yard because I'm afraid of it going down the drain and clogging. But it's getting cold doing that outside...what do you do?

    • @VenisonforDinner
      @VenisonforDinner  9 місяців тому +1

      We have what is referred to as a lagoon system. It's very common practice in Northern rural areas. You have to have a minimum 5 acres by our bylaws to use the lagoon system.
      I do the best I can to scrap out any bits from bowls and jars etc. Use hot soapy water and that's it. We've never had issues. I've lived on properties with septic systems all my life and never had an issue with it clogging. However we'd had other issues and had to use a drain snake to fix it!!

      Our milking machine has been cobbled together using a
      De leval bucket and a Nupulse claw. It works well for us.
