One of my earliest reading memories outside of Dr. Seuss, Berenstain Bears, and Watership Down is D’aulaires’ Norse Gods and Giants. My best friend and I kept checking it out from the school library and would trace all of the drawings. When I was a teenager I found out about the Edda. Familiarity with the general narrative helped with getting through what seemed like strange poetry. The Nibelungenlied a few years later in my reading was absolutely eclipsed by the stark Edda.
