Like you mentioned it’s for range. The hubcaps are for aerodynamic purposes. I kept them on for that purpose. They could’ve at least had the hubcaps in black. I plastidipped the hubcaps bc I was too lazy to prep and do the rims. But seeing the finish on the rims again makes me want to do it now. Great job n great finish.
Not quite $30 anymore:) just finished doing mine and thx for the help here. Couple notes: getting the inside of the wheel is very challenging without removal or over spraying the spokes. Make sure to do this outdoor I did this in my parkade and got some nasty comments from the owner where the exhaust for the parkade is. Lastly wear a mask of some sort the fumes are strong. Hope this helps next person that tries this. Overall happy with outcome but I’ll have to do some touchups to edge of rims and insides when I changeover to winters
Thx for the video: I just finished doing mine this weekend and have few notes and concerns. 1) Don't try this on street, better to find place where any wind or air circulation isn't (f.e. garage). 2) Keep in mind if for some reason tomorrow you need to take off our your tire for flat tire jobs, and need to remove caps - you'll damage your paint. 3) Concern: aerodynamic purpose. Is that right to remove hubcabs? 4) order 1 extra plastidip, for sure you need to patch up your job every 1-2 months. Final conclusion: So far it looks better than before, but I'll think twice if you are going to do it :-)
BTW, is there any risk of rims cracking in the future. My neighbor, who saw me painting my rims said that he had some cracking on his rims coz of previous paint. Not sure that this make sense, but better to ask, than guess.
Dip Your Car makes the plasti dip. They now make Shadow Black HyperDip Wheel specially for rims. I got 5 cans of the shadow black (glossy black black black) microfiber towel, dip release to wipe down the tires, and 4 brake masking bags for $76. I’m excited to spray those rims. Yours look great.
@@DriversOnly To follow up on this question, you never had to do any touch up work during that time? All you had to do was spray once and it lasted all that time?
LOVE it!!! Just what I was looking for too. I’d seen this in other videos but this definitely threw more light. You’ve earned a permanent subscriber👍🏾🙏🏽
I believe I saw a test where it was found that the hubcaps on the Model 3 increased range by about 10% or about 30 miles. Tesla puts those $10 hubcaps on all cars to increase their EPA range rating. They probably don't care if you throw them away after purchase.
Thank you for this video. That looks really good! I'd like to think that I'm going to do this... but honestly, I lose interest in a project if it takes longer than 30 minutes! lol Question: How does plastidip do when you take your car through the carwash?
great video! you could use that blue painter's tape on the tires, to keep your black paint from getting on them.. but like you said, getting the black paint on the tires isn't a big deal either!
Dude! Thank u! My model Y is here in a few weeks and we regretted not upgrading the rims. This will save tons of money! We r down in Frankfort by the way. Thanks for the vids
I've done this myself before, and my OCD kicked in watching you do this. My recommendation is to take the wheels off the car, clean them thoroughly, use index cards to shield the tires from the wheels, then spray both the front and back sides. I don't want to deal with any overspray and by removing the wheels from the car and doing them away from everything else, it mitigates the risk. I'm fortunate to have a large garage and plenty of space, so if you do to, I'd go the extra step. Either way, I can also attest that when done correctly, this product stays put.
Thank you much... my MY is coming in next Monday, same wheels and I've ordered the plastic dip along with the caps. For me, the low profile tires, ride, and cost were deciding factors to go with the standard Aero wheels.
People have tried wheel covers versus no covers, and you lose about 1% range without hte wheel covers. Some people remove the covers for everyday use, but put them back on for road trips.
George! I've been watching you for over a year on cryptosrus and I'm getting a model Y in 3-7 weeks. Found this video by chance and saw it was you. Keep up the great work on both channels. 😀
The hub caps increase the range. It sounds crazy, but they do. Our Prius came with them too. Didn't mind because, well, it's a Prius. I eventually cracked one and pulled it off. Wheels look much nicer (they're also alloy) but we lost about 2mpg average per tank. Not sure the cost of replacement is worth it, but anyway, there it is.
There are shops that specialize in powder coating wheels like these. I got estimates for about $600 which includes sandblasting and baking. The do-it-yourself plasti-dip is a popular alternative through.
I’m not a big black wheel fan. I just removed the aero caps and added the wheel centers and lug nut covers for $30. When i drove from NewEngland to Florida, i put the caps back on and then took them off when I arrived.
4:00 I wonder how these wheels would look in black in between the spokes. I think that would add some nice contrast to the design of this wheel. I personally like two-tone silver & black machined wheels so I would maybe just get those instead. But I wonder how these wheels would look with black pockets to give it a more distinctive look
Looks great! I'm getting a LR Model Y. Was looking for ideas. Do you think the Plastidip would look good on the hubcaps as well? I heard that hubcaps are good for range
Interesting method. Looks good to me. it is July 2023 and items you list in description are still readily available. Seems like some of those other snap on RIM protectors are only for 20-21 inch wheels and also ones that do work, they are very expensive like around 200-300 dollars to do all 4 wheels. I am going to be purchasing the Model Y Long Range with 19 inch wheels/tires in the very near future. Doing a test drive during this week. Then decide what to do to protect the so called RIM Rash people call it Thanks for this information. Take care.
Wow that’s great looking wheels. Does this make any difference in the EPA range if you get removed the caps? Can you rub off the the black later on if needed ? Does this change void any warranty ?
You should have used Plasti Dip Glossifier provides a gloss UV protection on Plasti Dip coated items otherwise it will not last long, and yes the wheels look fantastic VS the hub caps.
Model Y looks nice! So much cleaner look goin with black rims than keeping stock wheel covers on. Consider getting calipers powder coated? White calipers would be 🔥🔥
Yea thinking about that as a future mod. Surprising the dual piston calipers up front looks pretty good stock but in some sort of color they would look even better.
Nice ride! Why not take the whole wheel off, maybe two at a time and spray them that way? I would've gotten some over spray tape sheet as well for the tires.
Thanks! I kind of feel like Tesla did it on purpose as a marketing tactic. If the stock wheels were exposed or even black I think many would not upgrade.
plastidip now $14.75/can as of 3/2/23 (Amazon). Good video tho. May try this. Looks great. How did it hold up over time now that this video is a couple years old?
I was going to do something like this but now that I've got my Y, I notice that those hubcaps aren't nearly as bad looking as the aerocaps that the model 3 came with, so I think I'll just leave them on for now

| Plastidip - amzn.to/36riH82
Fun tip: rub dish soap on the tires before spraying. Once the plasti dip is dry just wash off the soap and your tires will be overspray free
Looks good. Good move to keep the standard smaller wheels. Better range and better ride and less expensive.
Nice !!! Beats spending an extra $2,000 for the induction wheels
Yup! And lighter too.
Nice! Is the ride softer too compared to the induction wheels?
@@edwardstavick1272 yes it is
Eh the induction wheels look better though. Love them on my model y

That's one of the things that had cross my mind, in order to avoid paying the extra $2000, you just showed me how to do it. thank you
Glad I could help! :)

did this to mine too!! after seeing another video of like tips and accessories for your Y/3 I was dumbfounded that these were under there 😎
Nice! Yea don't know why these beautiful wheels are being covered up!
I honestly don't mind the white wheels but the black wheels are with white paint are amazing.
I agree!
@@DriversOnly Your Y looks like something that would be from Starwars.

Looks amazing. Did you consider using Plasti-Spray on the hubcaps?
I was thinking same thing - that way you wouldnt lose the little extra range, much easier application too off the car.
@@juantana7 Since this posting I have been urged to avoid plasti-spray. Seems it isn't durable.
Thank you for this great tip man...you got it right a lot of people on here are painting the ugly hubcap for some reason

They look badass with that black coating. Totally doing this to mine

Thanks!

Tesla should ship the Gemini rims painted/powder coated black instead of the basic silver. Would that be too much to ask?
Great idea. Black is great
This is the best fix yet!
I agree!
Will this hold up to a tire shop doing a tire rotation?

Once you apply the Plastidip, does placing the hub caps on and off damage the finish?

Super video! How about PlastiDip-ing and/or painting the Gemini hub caps?
Great idea!
There are shops that specialize in powder coating wheels like these. I got estimates for about $600 which includes sandblasting and baking. The do-it-yourself plasti-dip is a popular alternative through.
The wheel transformation is genius

Nice! Yea its real easy to pop on and off the covers for trips :). No sure I can do that with the dip though.
Great looking car with the black on white.
Did you notice a decrease in range once you took off that hubs?
The hub caps improves the efficiency/range by about 5%
Heck of a job. Perfect!
how about just putting plastidip on the hubcaps? to keep the better range
Thanks, it looks really nice although I was hoping it was dark color wheel just like the Model 3 without the wheel cover.
They make gloss back hub caps identical to the Gemini wheels that look fantastic. They don’t cost $30 but try peeling that stuff off after a year. Lol
What about over spray? Would you recommend removing the rims and properly taping off the tires and inside the rims?
No need, the plastidip just peels off wherever you oversprayed. Wish they would of showed that in the video

Matching the black trim on the car is the way to go. It also makes the wheel gap less noticeable.
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Good video and the wheels are a plus. I would like to see how red or gold would look. I think I would pull the wheels off to spray them

The hop cap is for the air to blow easy more just the things can’t blow
I wonder what it would like like if you treated the hub caps?
How is the plastidip holding up after almost a year?

Looks good. I’d likely add a glossifier to make it pop even more

Taking off the wheels will be better and don't forget to protect the tire from the overspray too.
