one trick i saw on another video is to use electric tape around the edge of the silver rims so when you put the caps on no silver will be showing. Also, you don't have remove the center circle. Thanks for showing how it looks. I just got the YLR and will do this very soon!
Thanks for the video! I did the same to my Model Y today. It looks great! I think the biggest advantage is that I can go for the all-black look if desired in the future.
Glad you like it. Check out my video that show how they held up through the winter. I added a red sticker to the center of hubs. Really like how it looks. Thanks for watching!
I have had plastidip on my jeep wheels for years and it holds up very well. My suggestion on tape is that you need to remove it within a few minutes of the last coat while it is still drying. Much better experience than letting it dry first. To be honest, if there was a little gap between the center and the rest you probably could have just sprayed it all and then peeled away the center part after it dried without using any tape.
Thanks. Check out my winter stress test video. I also put red vinyl stickers on the log on the center hub. Makes the hubs pop in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
@@iowatesla Yea its funny you mentioned that. On the painting video, I noticed the Tesla symbol indent, so I thought maybe I can cut out the symbol and paint it, but I saw your video of the winter stress test, and thought your vinyl sticker idea would make it a lot easier and cleaner looking than trying to cut out the symbol. I ordered myself some stickers from the etsy link below your video. Thanks again!
Thank you. Very helpful video but I consider also the Option of installing black Cover Wheels that protect perimeter. I have already some damages. In any case the Look of your painted covers is very good
I want to plasty dip my Volkswagen Jetta hubcaps but I'm not a painter I guess I can wing it but how many coats would be sufficient I'm not trying to do 15 codes like this gentleman is what just a sufficient amount of coats how many cans
Well he did the multiple coats of the plastic dip so it would not run or leave streaks. He did do one coat a little more aggressive and it did run on him a little bit. Sometimes painting we can get carried away. I paint plastic models for a hobby and you have to be patient when painting and what he did was a good technique.
Good stuff. I think I may use this method as well. My preference would be to do the entire cover and not leave any silver. I’m also curious how it will weather. Maybe do a follow up after 1000 miles?
I will definitely get out a follow up video. I suspect that winter is going to be hard on them. I might wait till winter is over. Depends on how they perform.
Not bad. When I get my Y, I plan to set the aero wheel covers aside (and not use) and plastidip the actual 29” Gemini rims themselves. They are pretty nice looking.
Thanks. That's exactly what I did. Take a look at my Winter Stress Test video. I cover adding the red stickers on the center caps. Thanks for watching!
They look nice. I think if you would've put the plastic coat around the tires and the edge of the rims meet, they would even look better. Also, paint the emblem ⚫️ black. My opinion of course. Overall, I think you did a great job.
The other common option is to have the wheels powder-coated black. There are shops that do it professionally too. Not sure how much heat the dip can take so I guess dipping the wheels isn't a good idea.
I know how you can fix that scrape just get a tooth pick and spary a lot of plasti dip on it while it’s dripping and place it meticulously on the part that you scuff the hub cap and it should fix it keep it mind it won’t be exactly perfect but it can cover the mistake and still look good overall
Good try Jim. I think spray the inner deeper parts real light first the hit the flat spots next. Maybe you used electrical tape for center masking, use painters tape.I personally want to put black gloss on mine nut want to see if the center logos pop our as I want red ones onboard. But each to his own! I certainly do NOT like that aluminum right around the tire. There has to be a way to do something with that? But basically a good try
I didn’t like the silver around the rim either. At the time, there was nothing we could do about it really. Today there are many aftermarket wheel covers that cover everything. That’s what I have today.
About 10-15 minutes between coats. Best advice I was given was to stick the can in a bucket of hot water between coats. Dry the can each time before shaking and spraying. Does seem to give more even coats. I've used the Rustoluem stuff and Plastidip and don't think there is any difference tbh. We get a brand called Full Dip here in the UK and I prefer it to both. Seems to spray on far more evenly. I've made less mistakes with it than I have with Plastidip.
I'm not a fan of the center being shinny especially for all the effort, looks cheesy to me. I'm ok with the outer rim only. To be honest, for less then $150 bucks I'll buy black caps off Scamazon and keep the original ones original.
The hub caps are just plastic. I don't see why not. You may need to do some prep on the caps and hit them with some sand paper to get the paint to stick. The Plasti-dip isn't paint so it kinda sticks to itself and creates a shell that you can peal off if you want. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. How did you decide how many coats to use? BTW, I saw another video where black electrical tape was used to cover the silver wheel rim. Apparently it worked well. Just fyi.
I'm sure spray paint would be much more durable. I wasn't 100% committed. With this, I can always peal it off. The roads are pretty harsh in Iowa in the Winter. I'll see how they hold up.
I painted the wheels of a previous car of mine and there was no visible damage after 3 years. The stuff is reasonably durable though ymmv if you drive on gravel roads, etc... It is removable though so if it gets beat up after a few years you can easily completely redo them; maybe try a different color, pearls, etc...
I can tell you that it wants to peel off. When I removed the tape from the center hub, it started to pull up. It acts very much like a thin coat of rubber. Thanks for watching!
I wasn’t sure how it would go so I wanted the option to peel it off if it didn’t work. Spray paint would be more durable but after a full winter, the plasti dip is holding up great! Thanks for watching.
Personal choice. Even if you paint the entire hubcap, there is still a silver ‘ring’ on the outside edge that shows the silver wheel under the hubcap. I also added a red Tesla logo sticker to the center hub that makes it look better. That’s covered in a separate video. Thanks for watching.

Thinking of doing a two tone Matt and gloss black finish similar to the silver/grey on the originals. Thanks for the vid

Used it on a Toyota front grill emblem 3 years ago and it has yet to scratch or peel off.

Great suggestions. Just ordered a MY for my wife and I’ll do this the next time around.
Great idea regarding the the center piece. Or maybe just a smaller piece of tape in the middle to speed up the dip peel off.
I like the idea of keeping the center unpainted! Compliments the silver trim very nicely!

What will happens to the hubcaps if you go thru a car wash?

It's a cool look! Definitely haven't noticed that center and circle design but it works well here. Kinda want to see it in motion :)
Thanks!

@@iowatesla How did they last in winter?
2 winters and still look as good as day 1.

Good idea. I would have done the center hub.
how long inbetween the coats did you wait for it to dry?
Not bad. When I get my Y, I plan to set the aero wheel covers aside (and not use) and plastidip the actual 29” Gemini rims themselves. They are pretty nice looking.
I do like the Gemini wheels as well. I wish they came black like on the M3. Painting those wheels would have been a lot more work.
how did this work for you? I would have done the same, but I hear the aero wheels improve your milleage
I didn’t know you could get 29” wheels, you must have to modify the bodywork to get them to fit 😉
Thanks for the video, I will be doing this in a few days. I bought 4 cans just in case lol
Thanks for watching and good luck! 4 cans will be enough. I used 3. I bought 6.
Looks really nice! I would totally do this as well.
Thanks! I like it. I think the factory caps look strange now. They are also holding up great. Thanks for watching!

Still look brand new to be honest.

Why do they even make them silver to start with.... This looks so much better!
No idea. With they just supplied the black wheels they is on the 3.

It seems like PlastiDip, even when cured, would be more susceptible to coming off versus plain old spray paint. Great video, though, sir!

You should wear a mask when spray painting. Love, Mom.
Might have been to cheaper to buy some
They weren’t available at the time. Plenty now.
That's not Plasti-Dip...
I understand that plasti-dip is a specific brand. This is they same idea. Spray on and can be pealed off later.
