I shared this same comment in a recent video of Derek Trucks sitting in with Phish. But wanted to post again to reiterate what so many commenters have written below about Derek being a great person.
Way back in 1996, I was a guitarist in a band, and we had the chance to open for a 16- or 17-year old Derek Trucks (with his band) at some tiny coffee shop in New Cumberland, PA. And let me put it this way: my band was not going to be lighting the world on fire. And that’s being kind. And of course even back then, Derek was a phenomenal talent. Clearly in another league. But this dude made a point to sit down and listen to us play and clap for our songs. At such a young age, he had already played with some of the best musicians on the planet (and now he is one). But he still took the time to listen to us and support us. That’s a kind soul right there. I’ve seen him play a dozen times since then throughout the years and am always swept away by how he makes his guitar sing. But that coffee shop in 1996 is my strongest memory of him. A class act.

Awesome story! I seen an interview of Derek when he was about that age and he was the same as now, thoughtful and egoless. He talks about how his dad told him not to get a big head like other young guitarist during his time, what an important lesson. Just feeling moved from music is more then enough and that's what artist should strive for imo.

He said "Well D... that's about as good as I've ever heard it, I mean that." He acknowledged Derek as one of the greats, as one of the masters of blues guitar. But it isn't sports, he's heard other foundation setting masters before Derek (BB himself for instance). Soul and emotional power is what is evident. As Dickey Betts said once "it ain't a sport, we're not keeping score".

Rick, you are making history interviewing the greatest musicians of our time. Not only that but you ask relevant questions, due to your immense musical knowledge, instead of the regular repetitive run-of-the-mill questions that people from corporate media do once they land these kinds of interviews. Derek has been one of my favorite players for a while and it was great of you to make his introvert self comfortable with your well-informed questions. I agree with you 100%. He is by far the best interviewer of musicians I have ever seen. With his experience and knowledge of the music industry, the way he is able to dig deep into the technical side of what makes the artist they are. From how they compose, what keys they use to breaking down songs and identifying elements, discussing how they came to be on a technical level. You can tell with this interview and also with sting that they appreciate and enjoy every second, not having to answer basic cliche questions that have been asked 100x before. And also for the viewer, gaining valuable insight. He should conduct all music interviews.

Amazing guitarist, passionate, joyful, humble… And the nicest guy ever. I’ve been watching him since he started opening for the Allman’s… then playing with them… then his solo stuff… then with Susan. So many of my favorite moments at concerts have had Derek on the stage. From tripping my balls off the first time in public at a Bros show where he opened at like 13 years old, to transcendental moments of Greg, Derek and Warren that make atheism impossible, to feeling the first drops of a passing storm on my face listening to Susan and Derek covering Rain as a tribute to Greg just days after he passed. His music and the music scene he’s spent his whole life immersed in have been one of the miracles in my life for sure.

As a 62 years old musician who has met literally thousands of artists in my time, the greatest, and experienced live shows that to say the least were epic. But experiencing Derek live last year, and watching him dance around musically on stage with Susan and his band, that has to be one of the greatest musical moments I’ve ever had. You can throw around a lot of slide players names as being one of the best, but Derek IS the greatest. And he’s one of the most humble, connected people I’ve ever seen.

Derek is the only artist who, when I last saw him, received a standing ovation in the middle of the first tune of the night. It went like that for the entire show. It was the third time I'd seen him but the people I was with had never seen him before. There was one "Oh my God!" after another from them the entire evening. I need to see him again. Soon.

I really love Derek Trucks. He's probably one of my fav. guitarists. Unfortunately I don't really like the Tedeschi-Trucks band. All their music sounds super "samey" to me. They really do a good job of making one of the most exciting guitar players in the world sound boring. It sucks. I honestly wish I could get into it. That being said, some of his live solo performances are my favorite of all time. There's a live version of him doing the solo from "Midnight in Harlem" and it's a religious experience, no lie.

I try to watch and listen intently to every video I run across that features Derek and/or Susan, or best of all, both of them together. I can honestly say that I've never seen another video with Derek so animated, visibly happy, and wide open to taking the conversation in any direction it just flowed into in this vid. He and Susan are so NOT pretentious, or competitive in their playing. Everything with them is about going wherever the music takes them when playing, or wherever it just naturally flows to when doing sit-down interviews, and how willing he is to give so completely of himself and the "Inside Baseball" narratives sharing info that most people have no idea how much depth people of his musical prowess simply have to possess to bring the listening audience along with him so that we feel as much as is humanly possible like we were there the night the Colonel died on-stage, or how much he really thought about the ABB family and on and on and on, while never boring the audience to tears or getting bored himself and just going through the motions. The dude just took us on a ride that only he and a handful of other people in the world know about from such a personal perspective.
I want to thank Derek for even doing this interview. It was one of the funnest times I've watched/listened to an entire relatively long interview where I wasn't tempted at least once or twice to bail before it was over, or skip a segment here and there or whatever. I sat here watching and listening straight through from beginning to end and had so much fun and smiled so intensely that I would've still been listening if it lasted 2, 3, 4 or even 5 times as long as it did. My only regret is that I can only like it once. It deserves more than that in my case anyway, and I seriously doubt I'm the only one who felt as strongly about it as I do. Well, gotta git. Time to take my mutt out for his last unloading of the day and night. Y'all take care and I hope all y'all enjoyed that at least half as much as I did, 'cause if at half-way, it should still make for a great way to end a day. Peace Out, Blues

I've sent this link to everyone I know. The thing about true masters coming across as humble normal people. I keep seeing that in really great ones. Hendrix was like that. In the classical world Hilary Hahn is like that. Totally approachable. Its like they get it that what they have is a gift to everyone and they share in that communion with joy which allows them to be truly transcendent artists. Doc Watson was another one. I sat across from Derek's Uncle Butch as we sat in a circle and passed around a couple of joints and talked Music. The best music channel featuring the best living musician. Rick's interviews are the best. He's simply a fan that brings no ego into the mix. He hands the musician the reins and gives them the space to open up and create a thoughtful exchange of ideas. The bar has been set. I will watch this again and again.

I've never heard Mr Trucks speak before. What a humble gentleman! He has that Stevie Ray Vaughn sort of energy. A real human being who also happens to be an outstanding musician. Such an inspiration, especially when the world is so full of self proclaimed geniuses and "voices of their generation", who are suffocating in their own hot air.
