Rick is the best musicians interviewer there is in my opinion. So balanced and sincere in his interest for his own curiosity. Brings out the best in the interviewee. This one’s great, Warren is the man.
That Allman Brothers 1990 album was right after I became a quadriplegic at 21yrs old. I listened to it regularly and it fed my musical itch. I started playing harp with a neckbar and composing with my old Mac. It led me to a lot of good times and mental healing with many a fun blues jam in my home and random bars. That album introduced my ear to Warren and I absolutely love Gov't Mule. Saw them live once right after 9/11. Security sucked but they were outstanding. Great interview as usual Rick.
I thought I broke a personal record with how fast I clicked when I saw Rick interviewed Eric Johnson... but I just smashed a hole in my keyboard for Uncle Warren!
Great interview! I went to high school with Warren and I remember him growing as a musician and quickly surpassing the local talent pool. He was the fixture at an event called “Monday Night Jam” at the Brass Tap in North Asheville NC in the early 80’s. Local talent would show up and play great music until the wee hours. Really special time in my life. Watching a legend develop into a master. Hats off to you Warren!
Warren has taught me to be a better musician. When I first started with slide I got a great tutorial from Stephen Bennett. Then I bought Warren's books and jam tracks. Truly epic. We saw him last year do Dark Side of the Mule at Red Rocks and it was crazy insane good. He broke out the firebird and brought the place down. Laser light show was the best since The Wall at Nassau Colluiseum with Floyd! Warren is fast becoming my mentor and my favorite to listen to. Tedeski Trucks too.
I had the pleasure to drive Warren and Gov't Mule, many times on tour....great guy,big heart. You are genuine Rick, and i can tell Warren really enjoys this.
Warren is one of the all time greats. He has mastered the trinity of writing, playing and singing, all while staying humble. A true role model for up and coming musicians.
First time I saw Warren, he opened for the Allman Brothers with his solo band, then came and played the three plus hour Allman Brothers set. I have seen just about every thing he has done for thirty plus years. Got to meet him for my 50th birthday, i think he remembers something about every show he has ever played. A true Gentleman and world class musician
It's criminal really how underrated and under appreciated Warren is.. having seen him play with both bands it's a sight to behold when he goes into a solo...🤘❤️🤪 A true master of melodic sonic aggression
He’s not under appreciated by the ones who matter. I’m not sure Warren was meant for the mainstream. Just like past masters, his music is for a particular audience (of which I am a lifelong member)
Warren Haynes, a true national treasure! ”Every guitar player should listen to singers and drummers” - so true! It is hard to believe, but every time you think ”this was the best interview, ever”, there’s one even better!
Love Warren. Love Asheville NC. I’m a 62 year old NYC guy and the Brothers were always my favorite band. For those of you who haven’t- go spend some time in Carolina. It’ll change you. ❤️
Warren Haynes is my favorite guitarist alive or not! I ve seen him over 100 times with Mule, ABB, Dead, symphonies, WHB and solo. He never disappoints and is a very humble man. Great work Rick! Much appreciated brother!!

Please Rick bring out videos like that as long as you possibly can :) Here is someone who can't help but sucking it up like a dry sponge

22:13 "I call my action too high for lead, not high enough for slide". You've just described my life for the past 4 decades Warren. Glad to know I'm not alone. Absolutely love your playing and singing, always have.
Had the pleasurer of meeting Warren in the mid 90's outside 'Toads place' in New Haven Ct. He had just finished playing there that night (It was their depute album) and I was walking out of the place, stepped on the the side walk and there he was staring right at me. He put his hand out and greeted me like an old friend and thanked me for coming. I told him I was a big fan! He smiled and said Thank you!..., A true Southern Gentleman. I'll never forget it .
Saw my first ABB show in 78 and have seen many ABB shows, Mule shows and Gregg shows since then. Grew up in CT so I've also seen many, many shows at Toads...but not that one. Great guy! Great bands!
I've never seen Warren interviewed before. He is more talkative than I expected. He also has such a great insight into music and can express his thoughts in such an articulate manner...kind of felt like I was taking part in a music history seminar. Great job Rick!...you have the ability to get the most out of whoever you interview.
I agree. This was nothing like the average UA-cam "what's your rig?" Rick gets it started and just sits back and lets the guest say what they want to say. Warren was just himself. No wonder he has so many friends in the music industry.
I love how many truly great musicians spend so little time actually talking about themselves. They still get excited by their influences and experiences and love to share that. Warren seems to be having a great time.
Hayes and Trucks as a duo, their call and response is an absolute master class and on par with any other legendary guitarist pairing you could possibly name. Absolutely a beautiful mesh of tone, style, and phrasing.
About 32 minutes in Warren expands on what the meaning of "what you don't play" is and absolutely blows my mind. That is something that applies to every collaborative enterprise ever and should be taught in schools.
I've seen Warren a few times when he comes to the UK. One time at the Roundhouse, in Camden, the sound was so bad I had to leave the gig. Some weeks later at The Stables I spoke to Warren about the sound at the Roundhouse and he explained that they tried everything to get the acoustics to work but to no avail. He was very apologetic and obviously does not want his band to be compromised by the auditorium. Another great thing is you can download the gig you were at from his website! A true gentleman.
The classical teacher's name Warren couldn't recall was Jerry Young. Jerry started about every classical player in the Asheville area years ago. He was also a skilled Atkins player. He briefly taught Brian Sutton though even in high school Brian was so advanced Jerry didn't think he had much to offer him. Jerry sadly passed away several years ago. And that's the trivia that doesn't matter and no one cares about. 😊
Listen to Warren's solo in "Back Where It All Begins" from Allman Bros "Second Set" live. It's the first solo. About a minute 30 in. 3 or 4 minutes of sheer face melting genius.
What I love about your channel is that it introduces me to the “person” which makes me want to go listen to the “musician.” Especially when they are musical historians,
Yes, indeed! And especially when you might have had just a taste before you heard the interview. It seems that many musicians like Warren really are known for their live shows, often collaborating with “better known” artists. But they don’t need to be compared with anyone. They’re giants on their own terms.
jevans u should chec out theses Dickey solo cd s . Collecters vol .1 . .2002. i think they are great Dickey music . i believe he wrote n produced them .
Someone said this already but these interviews should be in the Librery of Congress and I say at El Prado Museum too. The stuff legends are made of for sure. Every one is like travelling through music history. What a great dude Warren is so humble and respectful, the way he talks about Sco made me completely emotional. Truly a musical legend. Just like you Rick. I probably said this as well but It's like a sacred moment in my home for every new interview. The smell of fresh coffee the silence before it, and then just like you just arrived and sat in my living room with another incredible artist.... If anybody told me this 20 years ago I would go: That is impossible. Nobody, not even the likes of Letterman could do that. Well here is our pride as musicians. Mr. Rick Beato.
I had an opportunity to meet Warren, I was able to hand off a rough mix/master of my solo album. I told him it was my way of saying thank you for what his influence did for my playing! It meant the world to me, and he’s and Mule have been a driving force with me since innocently buying “Dose” in 1998! I’d do anything to open for Gov’t Mule one day, but just meeting Warren meant the world to me! Thank you Rick for this interview! Andrew & Heavy As I
I saw Warren Haynes with the Allman Brothers in 1993, at Humphreys by the bay in San Diego, California Jeff Healey was the opening act. Such an incredible band and such an incredible show.
Allman brothers is a guitar lovers band. Simply some of the best playing ever. Its a shame we all have to get older and we begin to lose those greats we loved to hear.
I saw the Allman Brothers in 1973 and was fortunate enough to meet Dicky in 2000. Warren has done a great job in maintaining that band. Thank you, Warren.
There is no one else that can do an interview like Rick Beato. His is great at it as he is a very accomplished musician himself. Although I’ve always really liked Warren Haynes guitar playing, I didn’t know anything about him. He appreciates where he’s been over the years and where it’s brought him. He gives credit to so many of the music greats past and present. Very humble is what I see. I hope to see you in person someday.
What a humble and inspiring gentleman, wow, thank you Warren for being you, and inspiring us. Thank you Rick for introducing me to Warren. I love this interview and program! It inspires me and makes me a better player when I see someone like Warren speak about his journey. No one will ever hear me play, that is not my journey, I love playing and an interview like this makes me feel like I am doing alright stumbling through for the joy of playing.
This is one of those times where someone you hugely admire is being interviewed...and you hope that the interview doesn't let you down. Here, Warren lived up to and far beyond those hopes and expectations. Massively knowledgeable, lively and engaged, and as humble as can be. Gave me a tingle when it was all over.
Living in Asheville in the 90s and hanging with the Old Guard of dudes that grew up w Warren, you could not shake the vibe of Warren and the Allmans. What a great guy, and musician. Incredible singer, guitar player and historian. Intelligent, thoughtful and you can't find anyone to say anything bad about him.
I got turned on to Warren because he covered so many of my favorite songs.. the guys a master I absolutely love him..probably the most underrated guitarist I've ever heard✌🏻
@scottlove931 he's awesome. Tim Haden was my teacher at UNCA, and Mike Barnes teaches there now. Both amazing players. Tim was a great dude. He was a character. I had immense respect for him and I learned a lot. There's some bad MF in Asheville still to this day
@davidmccall4776 I'm not sure. I live in Chattanooga now. Asheville has changed a lot due to 25 years of steady tourism commercials. I tend to stay on the outskirts when I go back to visit. When I do go back though I have to get a Highland Oatmeal Porter and Beefalo Calzone at Barleys. There's a bunch of great players. Barnes and McDaniel are terrifying. They worked at Musicians Workshop [recently closed to retirement].
There wasn't a better band on the planet than 1994 & '95 Allman Brothers! If you're not hip to it, do yourself the favor and dig up those live shows. Just crackling with energy, spirit and unbridled force.
Man wish I would've been here back then. I live a d breathe this kinda music. Been practicing a lot a d id like to follow in his footsteps so to speak, even if it's just as a hobby
@@quietinterlude770 I wouldn't trade growing up there and learning from all of these people for anything in the world! I know at least four of the people Warren mentions in this interview from Asheville. I didn't know Warren took lessons from Andy Hunter and Bruce McTaggart though. That was new information. Both are very amazing players!! Warren is about 7 years older than me, or so.
Mr. Beato, as a guitar player myself and having played in clubs( not quitting my day job) your interviews with these player's , like Warren Haynes are the best. Keep up the good work.
Warren has been one of my favorite guitarist since becoming a fan of Gov't Mule in 2004. Warren is humble in life and his playing and so widely inspired by all genres of music. So in that, he's able to manipulate a song nearly everytime he plays live. Not hearing his songs exactly the same each time hearing them live. Genius !!! Just a Damn-Good-Singer, Songwriter and One Badass Guitarist !! One day, I hope to be able to purchase his signature Les Paul guitar. Love his style n sound. Can't wait to see him live again....and hopefully at Red Rocks.
Dude is an absolute LEGEND. Of all my favourite singer/guitarists, he's waaaaaaaay up near the top. His work with Mule and ABB is just incredible. What a privilege to hear him speak here, and he's looking GREAT these days. Lost a lot of weight over the last few years.
Last Summer Dark side of the Mule at Redrocks was one of the top live concerts I have had the pleasure of attending. Warren is so humble and the mule is such a great band! Thank you Rick great interview!
I completely missed this interview, that makes me so happy, Haynes is such a phenomenal artist and also seems extremely generous in supporting other artists. Thank you Rick!
Maybe one of the greatest interviews of your career! I took my wife and kids to see Govt Mule in Atlantic City when they did the Dark side of the Mule ! The only way they would go was because of the Floyd covers ! Well …. After the show all we could talk about was Warren and his guitar skills ! I love this kind of musicianship and was so happy to introduce my family to it ! We had a great night and made a great family memory !!!!
Warren Haynes created something with Gov't Mule that sounded like it fell in the cracks between other music that was drastically missing. They might not be your favourite group, but they need to exist in your playlist. When he was about to play that first snippet, I was expecting something louder and harsher, but it instantly had that warm smooth feeling to it.
Really? You're surprised that Warren has a knowledge and appreciation of jazzers like Coltrane and Miles? You know that Duane was a major fan of Trane and Miles, yes? Jaimoe introduced the band to those kind of jazz players. No surprise at all.
Boy, talk about timing to talk with Warren the day after Dickie left for greener pastures. I’m so grateful when Rick gets to interview these legends in their twilight years. To record their thoughts about their lives and work they will leave us to study and appreciate.
I got to see Warren and Gov’t Mule when they were in europe this last november. It wasn’t just a concert. It was literally an experience that completly shifted my guitar influences and changed the way I look at music.
Rick,Thank You For Having Warren. The Hardest Working Man In Music. Warren Has It All. The Voice Is So Soothing. I've Seen And Have Been Fortunate To Meet And Talk To Warren A Few Times. He Always Has Time To Talk. Just A Great Humanbeing.
I was at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY a few years ago when Mule recorded their latest live album/dvd. They played 2 nights and I was at night 2. I forgot what song it was they started playing but something felt off. Warren kept looking off stage (I assume to his tech) and eventually walked off stage. They eventually stopped playing and Warren got on mic and said something like "Since we're recording this, we want to really kill this. We want to start over again if that's alright." They started over and absolutely crushed that song. I was a fan of Warren as a musician before that night but I became a huge fan of Warren the man after that night. Just a humble cat with a prodigious gift.
i'm an amateur bluegrass upright bass picker, but i really dig listenin' to you pros talkin' music & always learn somethin'. i've been around since '52.
I've watched a few UA-cam videos with Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes doing 12-minute versions of Jessica and I thought, who IS this guy?? How can a guitar player just stand next to Dickey Betts and play like that?? So impressed with his talent, and even more impressed with his forthcomingness in this interview. I really liked the Michael McDonald interview and this one is just as good. Rick, you have a gift of putting talented people at ease. Keep it up!!
Warren is the kindest, most talented dude out there and has been killin the game for years. He’s gotta be the best guitar teacher in the blues rock/jam scene, so great at explaining his techniques and processes! His Hot Licks Dvd from back in the day taught me so much.
Thank you for this interview. On top of the great advice and insights, Warren just seems to be a fine example of somebody who’s comfortable in his own shoes. There’s a lesson in that too.
Warren Haynes is one of my all time favorite guitarist / singer / songwriters. What a great interview and great info for a musician listening to this. The experiences and lessons learned, Warren shares throughout his career is invaluable!
I’m from Macon, GA. I was born in October 1968 my mom and dad rented the lower level of an old house on Vineville ave., it was three houses from the “big”house that Allman Brothers stayed at. One day two of the Allman brothers band members asked my dad if they could borrow our picnic table because they were having a party. My dad said sure go ahead we still have a remnant of that picnic table. I’ve seen Warren play in Macon years ago At the cherry blossom festival great people. God Bless you! Psalms 23
I toured with the early to mid 90’s Allmans. That lineup was pure magic. Red Rocks ‘96 was a legendary show and I have the coolest hippie teenager photos from the parking lot and campground parties. Wonderful memories 🥲
I see Warren a lot at the grocery store in my town. He is a really humble guy and always takes time out to talk.
In Bedford?😊
That is awesome. You can tell he is humble and kind.
Awesome.
Wow. He eats. If l had to talk to people at the grocery when l go just because they want to…
I'm not surprised. He comes across like a cool and likeable guy who respects others because his confidence comes from being comfortable in his own skin.
Warren and Derek share that rare 2nd-gen DNA .. absent of ego, thirsty for knowlege, and respectful of all who came before them. Pure class.
Beautifully said, dude!
Absolutely 💯 perfection 🥰🥰🥰
It's the school of Colonel Bruce
Well said
True!! 🙏🏽
This channel is turning out to be the most important music channel of today. Just brilliant.
It’s the best channel on UA-cam, music or otherwise.

Rick is the best interviewer ive seen. Best questions, stays out of the way and gets the most out of the guest. Just great
I love it that Rick gives Warren and whomever he might be talking to, the space to light up and shine.

100% The exact feeling I get in all of Rick’s interviews
Possibly the most thoughtful, unassuming, and well spoken musician I’ve ever heard interviewed.
Right up there with Derek Trucks. Beato has a great itw with him too.
Its like his playing. Not a note too many and every note has meaning.
Another important historical document courtesy of Mr. Beato

Warren's singing is so soulful, and seemingly effortless for him. Yeah, brother... you nail all three.
RIP Dickey Betts 😢 thank you for all the great music. The sound track of our lives.
Warren Haynes is an American treasure!
Its not an interview, it's a conversation!
That's what makes these episodes so good.
I would say it’s a bit of both.
Stewart Copeland sure had fun with that line.

Very cool to know. Thank you. I saw Bryan the other night w/ Bela Fleck. He smoked.
I took lessons from Jerry for about a year when I was 15-16 years old.
Yeah but for those that knew any of the people you mentioned this will be cool AF.
Listen to Warren's solo in "Back Where It All Begins" from Allman Bros "Second Set" live.
It's the first solo. About a minute 30 in.
3 or 4 minutes of sheer face melting genius.
Right!
I love that solo!
I’ve been a huge Warren Haynes fan since my first Allman Brothers show on August 7 1989
Changed my life!!
These 60+ minute interviews are routinely too damn short. I could listen to you guys converse all day long
Rip Dickey! What an honor to be able to speak with Warren. I still watch my Rising Low and Deepest End DVD’s.
I watch Rising Low at least once a month. RIP Woody
jevans u should chec out theses Dickey solo cd s .
Warren is the man Rescued the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead when they were in need of a recharge! Plus his own fantastic music!
Yup, just like Dickey - what a lineage. 🇺🇸
Love Warren Haynes!! An incredible, humble talent!!
There's some bad MF in Asheville still to this day
@@JimmyGallowayGuitarIs Jim Ingle still playing guitar in Asheville? He used to be one of the best in town.
What an absolute joy of an interview, top man Warren 👍🇬🇧👍
There wasn't a better band on the planet than 1994 & '95 Allman Brothers! If you're not hip to it, do yourself the favor and dig up those live shows. Just crackling with energy, spirit and unbridled force.
I just love listening to Warren... very knowledgable and articulate. Rick, you have the BEST guests!
Sending love for Rick Beato, Warren Haynes, from Asheville, NC
You have a studio? I'm about 30 mins from Asheville 😊
I'm from Asheville. My family is still there. I've known Warren since I was about 17. I'm 56 y/o now. My studio is in McMinnville, TN.
I grew up in Asheville, and remember Warren playing with his group Ricochet.
Warren Haynes is one of the all-time greats. Just brilliant
Warren Haynes is a Legend ! He's really a big part of the Allman Brothers Band !
Mr. Beato, as a guitar player myself and having played in clubs( not quitting my day job) your interviews with these player's , like Warren Haynes are the best. Keep up the good work.
I have had the pleasurer of seeing Warren several times with both the Allmans and Mule. What a guitar player and singer. This man can jam!
Another dude with music OCD... dinner together would be great... but food would get cold. One of my favorite musicians thank you for this Rick
Warren has been a hero of mine since The Deepest End in 2003. He's just a GOAT.
What a great interview, Warren Haynes such an intelligent and knowledgable man !!
Man, I could listen to you two talk about music for days and end up wanting more. What a great piece of conversation. Thank you very much.
Thank you for all that you do to keep the music appreciation alive. Warren Haynes is such a down to earth person. Thank you!!
My esteem for Warren has jumped immensely from this interview. His appreciation and knowledge of jazz is a huge surprise.
The best part of this is the last few seconds, where he shows his appreciation and respect to Rick for the "conversation". What a down to earth guy!
Transcendental music meditation. Master player. Plus master interviewer and music man. Thank you so much. Grateful.
Warren Haynes is one of my all time favorite guitarist / singer / songwriters. What a great interview and great info for a musician listening to this. The experiences and lessons learned, Warren shares throughout his career is invaluable!
Warren is a gem , such a sweet cat and monster player, songwriter and singer . So humble always love to watch his interviews
Psalms 23
Warren comes across as a really humble and nice person. We all know that he is an incredibly gifted musician. That was a terrific interview Rick! 👍👍
I toured with the early to mid 90’s Allmans. That lineup was pure magic. Red Rocks ‘96 was a legendary show and I have the coolest hippie teenager photos from the parking lot and campground parties. Wonderful memories 🥲
