well, they may have done their research to see their targets audience age, what they do for a living and their social class. So let's say most of their target audience has a job what pays well or has some money to spend, you would want to try and spend that money on your product so doing the dropout thing is a way of doing it.

For those who are new to this series, it’s like the magic school bus but more WTF
Fun Fact: Self Experimentation was so commonly accepted for so long that when standards were put into place to require animal testing before human testing and human testing before a drug could be approved for sale an exception was put in place to allow self experimentation to continue. This is commonly regarded as a blind-spot in human testing standards today, but it remains the only viable option for many independent researchers. As a genetic engineer I can't just give someone a gene therapy drug to give them super strength, not without going through a mess of red tape, but I can give it to myself and if I otherwise follow the procedures required to document the safety of my self study I can then sell it.
Self-experimentation is also very useful in cases where long term detailed observation is so demanding that no one other than the researchers themselves are willing to participate. An 18 month self study, for example, resulted in the most detailed map of functional brain activity we have and that was just a few years ago. Other recent cases improved our understanding of diabetes while another gave us insight into how daily activities affect the gut microbiome.
One very good reason to prefer self-experimentation, when it's feasible to do so, is that any other human study must be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board. This is required by US Federal Law in order to protect test subjects and the board has the authority to freely approve or deny any study request or make any revisions as needed, BUT the board is not government run. It's run by the organization you work for. The problem is, if your organization doesn't have a board you are kind of stuck. In this case, you would have to either start your own board or pay another company to serve as your board - meaning you give another company detailed insights into your potentially profitable research and give them authority to change anything while paying them. It's just so much easier to just experiment on yourself.
And it's morally fine! Because no one innocent is being harmed.

In that experiment a group of scientists agreed to be bitten by mosquitoes to prove that Malaria was the vector of transmission, knowing full well that if they were right they were all going to die. Well, the guy organizing it conveniently missed his flight and couldn't participate in the mass suicide. However, we happily recorded the results and collected his Nobel peace prize.
I really hope this episode explores Alexandr Shulgin, the guy who invented and tested a cornucopia of psychedelics on himself and his wife.
