I'm a former mattress store manager and salesman of 20 years. I can explain some of these things. The reason you'll never see the same mattress in 2 different stores or the same mattress has different names is because of Sears. Sears wanted Sealy to make an exclusive line of mattresses just for them. Once other retailers saw that Sears had an exclusive line, they all wanted to have their own exclusive lines. Now retailers can completely customize their lineups and exclusive products are the norm. Most of the time, you don't actually see the exact same mattresses with different names, you have what they call "comparable" mattresses because there will be some differences (like how many layers of foam they have and in what order or a different cover.) Markup is generally pretty high in the mattress business. Originally, it was because most mattress salesmen work on commission (I did) and they needed to have some room for customers to haggle. Today, it's mostly just because corporations are greedy. One very typical scam is to put a mattress "on sale" by lying about the original price and then offering the actual price as a sale price. For example, one company I worked for would double the original price and then make it "buy one get one free." Don't ever pay the retail price in a mattress store. With the exception of Tempurpedic (which sets the prices at which retailers must sell their products), they have a tiered price structure. At Mattress Warehouse (in the mid-Atlantic region), they have "highline", "midline" and "lowline" prices (and our commission percentage would drop with each one, like 10% for highline, 7% for midline and 5% for lowline), and they also had what they called the "burn" price for last resort to keep customers from walking. We had to pretend to call the regional manager to get permission to sell at the burn price (and it only paid a 2% commission.) I'm kinda surprised that this video didn't cover the biggest scam in the mattress industry; the warranties. For the major brands the standard warranty is generally a 10 year non-prorated warranty. Some companies do offer longer warranties, but if you look at the fine print, it's usually non-prorated for 10 years and then heavily prorated for the duration of the warranty period. But here's the kicker; you have to also buy a water proof mattress protector because even the smallest of stains will completely void the warranty. In addition to selling mattresses, I also worked as a warranty inspector for a company called Mattress Marshalls. When you make a warranty claim, the manufacturer would send someone like me out to your home to inspect the defects. I would literally measure how deep a sag or body impression was, take photos and video and send them to the manufacturer. If I saw any stains at all, even the size of a dime, I had to report it and take pictures of it, and the claim would be denied. If I were to approve a claim and the defective mattress sent back had any stains on it, I didn't get paid for that inspection. In conclusion, I can confirm most of this video.
Tfw years later you see this, and you pay the "sale" price At least we really really liked it and continue to like it. So I guess we got that going for us with some free pillows thrown in :/
Purple taught me that I don’t actually like firm. I like support and stability. Never thought you could get soft and squishy with support and stability at the same time! Not to mention the incredible airflow that makes you sleep cooler. I’m not sure how people sleep on other mattresses now. Full disclosure, I work for Purple. But their mattresses are life changing. They give all employees one for free, then they give us a monthly $75 credit we can save up for our next Purple product. The Harmony Pillows are our hottest item right now.
IKEA mattresses are such shit quality though, their prices are great, but you can never return them ever. they are all sales final items. better off with Costco, you can return it forever, even if you buy it online. The other option is one most people don't understand or think of: Goodwill, no not a used mattress, Goodwill actually does sell some goods new, and Mattresses are one of them. Each store stocks a small supply of new twin, full and queen size mattresses that are brand name and brand new in packaging. they are also all-sales-final tho, but so much cheaper than other stores.
In Germany a store owner came up with the idea of making his own after being fed up with all the bullshit of the suppliers. Called it anti cartel mattress. Instantly won in neutral tests, had the same quality as multi thousand euro premium ones for a couple hundred bucks. He was bombarded with lawsuits and even direct sabotage with foam suppliers suddenly sending dirty foam to his small new factory or dropping out of delivering directly. He still sells them. Under a different name - caused by a lawsuit filed by the very mattress cartel he fought against.
@@cibuya idk where you see that prices from emma are higher than in irl matress stores, a matress in a real store would cost 900-1000 euros, emmmas cost 300-600 euros, a lot less
Hi, former Mattress Firm employee here. They don’t really tell us anything about this, but I figured this out on my own to be true after a few months with the company.
I don’t understand what people are surprised about. There’s no scams regarding what’s inside a mattress. If you don’t understand what’s in it, you don’t have to buy it. You can educate yourself and figure out what’s inside of it, and why it is good for you. No one is making you buy something you don’t understand, that’s simply sloppy shopping. For anyone else saying they’re jacking up prices, not everyone does that. At the end of the day, it’s a business designed to make money. Just like any other store that sells you anything.
not the killing type you’re just admitting that the shopper is lazy. People do it for shoes, clothes, cars, most things, why not for beds? Educate yourself, there shouldn’t be anything hard about that.
I recently had to buy a new queen size mattress. I had decided on my needs and the type of mattress and had compared several manufacturers. The best retail price from a popular local furniture store was $1,699.00 but I knew that retailer often had sales, so I waited for such an opportunity. My son-in-law was working for the warehouse of the same retailer, but I didn't want to impose on him for a "special price", so I didn't approach him. About 6 weeks later the mattress I was interested in went on sale for $1,299.00 so I was ready to make my move. My son-in-law heard about my intention and insisted that I allow him to see if he could do any better on the price. His manager advised him that they could not sell him the mattress for COST, but would try to give him a fair discount. The mattress was purchased at a price above the retailer's cost for a total of $182.00
A healthy 900% profit margin. My last mattress was $300 for 12" queen foam and it's been great for 12 years now. High end mattresses just seem like status symbols where you just pay for the brand if anything.
sleeping on the floor can potentially expose you to parasites and disease. while it isnt as prevalent in modern houses, with modern medicine, still not ideal. especially if you live near wilderness, where bugs and small animals may be looking for sources of warmth in the night.
Sorry guys, was busy with college work but !! it’s not coke or i’m not sure tbh cause once I set up the bed i’ve noticed a white substance stain on my Red carpet sooo I think it’s coke lol don’t want to cut open my bed tho it’s still in good shape
I worked in a furniture delivery company. The mark-up on mattresses is so high, that if an order for a mattress was canceled before we had shipped it, it went into the garbage, because it wasn't worth it to the company to pay to ship them back.
@@johndough6225 Customer orders it, and the mattress company ships to the delivery company's warehouse. While it's in that warehouse, the customer cancels the order, but the mattress company won't pay to get their mattress shipped back because it's not worth enough money for them to care about.
The key is to avoid that nonsense about pillow tops and pocket coils and box spring compatibility. Private companies can and do make simply-constructed mattresses. And while private mattress makers are still in the same range of prices (because they can both get away with matching the big brands and they have bigger overhead costs because they're small), you're getting a product made specific for you.
One sided mattress last longer, the springs inside are larger now and more fit inside them, this means they take less pressure and last longer. Rotate your mattress, don’t flip it
I’ve been in mattress sales since 2014 and I pride myself on being an expert in my industry. The major issue is, the majority of reps are not well versed in understanding what the technology in a mattress actually does, and the reason a bed is constructed using that technology. They are focused on purely making a sale and taking a customers money, instead of getting to understand their sleep needs and fitting them for a mattress. All mattresses have two components: Support and Pressure relief. If the support is coil it’s a coil bed. If it’s water then it’s a water bed. If it’s air it’s an air bed. If it’s foam it’s a foam bed. Etc. The purpose of the support is to keep your body aligned so your shoulder or hips don’t tip, causing your spine to fall out of alignment and forcing your muscles to to the work; leading to back pain. The other component is pressure relief, which does as it’s name suggests. It relieves you from the pressure. That pressure is the return force being exerted by the support keeping you in place. It’s Newton’s second law. The force of you going into the mattress returns upward and thusly you stop moving further into the mattress. As far as modern mattresses are concerned, ALL mattresses use memory foam in the pressure relieving portion of the mattress. Unless they are absolute entry-level $100 garbage. Better technology has made it cheaper to produce. However, like there are different grades of cloth, beef, or nearly any other material, there are different qualities of foam. These come down to the way the foams are made, and what other technologies they are blended with, such as latex or phase-change materials (pcms) like gel. This create more nuanced feels. Just as some people prefer bitter coffee, people have vastly different ideas on what a great feel is. So when fitting someone for a mattress, you need to get feedback from them about what feels goods to them, but additionally, you need to find the right pressure relief. You’ll hear terms like firm, plush, and pillow-top, but these aren’t very accurate ways of describing the mattress. A firm mattress really means that there are less layers of foam between you and the support, so you get to the hard stuff (support) faster. Stiffer foams may be used to create a denser feel, which many people subconsciously associate with firmness, and ironically support. Unfortunately for those poor souls that opt for a firm mattress for support, this is most often not the case. Again, this is highly dependent on the size of the individual, and the manner in which they sleep. A back sleeper, for example, doesn’t have much of their body actually penetrating the mattress before hitting alignment. So having less layers is not a problem. But side-sleepers (who make up by many estimates upwards of 75% of the population) run into a problem here. We are s-shaped. Our hips and shoulders jut out sever inches from our body. The degree of which varies by person. If Michael Jordan and Michael J. Fox lay in the same mattress on their side, they will have a dramatically different experience. Having wider shoulders, Mr. Jordan will require significantly more space. So when fitting for a mattress, the depth of the mattress plays a huge role. The 3rd biggest issue for sleepers is heat mitigation. As we drift into a deep sleep, our core body temperature drops. As we prepare to rise in the morning, our body starts to heat back up. When we get hot at night, it actually tricks our body into thinking it’s time to wake. Foam inherently traps heat. So they developed different ways of dealing with that. The problem arises when sale people don’t sell clean (usually because they are unskilled), and bend the truth to get a sale. When you see “sleep cool gel” in a mattress, what they’re really saying is “it ain’t hot like it USED to be.” There are very few beds in the industry that actually work to drop your core temperature, as opposed to just dispersing excess heat and keeping you temperature neutral. The reason Mattress stores have 60 different mattresses is because there is a need for it. Yes, there is a TREMENDOUS mark-up. It’s one of the last industries with margin left (thanks Amazon...). I’m sorry but you don’t go into business to make pennies. But I promise, if you come into a store and lay on a $500 bed versus a $2k bed, the difference will be VERY apparent. I hope this helps some people navigate their often confusing world of mattress shopping. And shame on bad sales people that make my job harder than it already is.
Question: I have fibromyalgia, sciatica and a severely-herniated disc in my lower back. A few years ago, I discovered that sleeping on a somewhat-deflated air bed really alleviates a lot of the pain. From what I just read in your post, that means I need a mattress with a lot of pressure relief. Air beds, no matter how well-made, fail. So, I spend a lot of money to avoid severe back pain. I also don't like throwing used beds out, not knowing whether or not they will be recycled. (Our town supposedly sifts through trash, but I'm not sure I believe that.) I've been wondering what kind of bed to get that would provide the same relief, last longer and be friendlier to the environment. Thanks in advance if you reply.
@@LadyhawksLairDotCom The best bed would be a Tempur-pedic, but the feel is highly dependent upon the frame and weight of your body, as well as whether you are a side sleeper, back sleeper, or stomach sleeper I find the Pro-Adapt soft to be a good catch-all and that 70% of customers who are looking at Tempur tend to like. Given your fibromyalgia, I would lean towards the soft feels, as you will be too sensitive for any other feel. Tempur's factories are zero-waste and recycle and re-use their materials. The thing I tell people is, you have to be aware that I cannot sell you a bed that will cure your medical ailments, but I can show you some that will provide the least amount of discomfort. You will unfortunately not be able to escape all of your pain and I'm sorry for that but that Pro-adapt soft will be a godsend. At $2099 it's a pretty penny. Most major retailer will offer interest free financing for 24 months so payments should be manageable. If that is out of your price range, check out one of the Plush Sealy Hybrids, which I believe were the consumer reports best buy for 2019. Good luck! Wish you well
What an un-cleverly disguised defense of the mattress industry by the same people that pay for the fake online reviews! 😊 And I _certainly_ believe that Ladyhawk's Lair of Learning is not just a fake accessory for the OP's advertisement!
@@jacobjohnson8686 Yes, my UA-cam channel is entirely devoted to shilling for mattress companies and other corporations. What a keen observer you are to have noticed.
I used to work for a mattress store as one of the delivery guys. Try to look for a small privately owned store instead of a large chain. Maybe I was just lucky but the integrity that my boss had was amazing. She never sold anyone more than they needed or could afford. It really showed bc I delivered to at least a dozen customers that had bought from her 10-20 years beforehand and came to her again for a new one.
Let me tell you all a dirty little secret about review sites. They people called post loopers. They pay these people to write reviews. They even tell them to write good or bad reviews. Post loopers are also often payed to create fake accounts on service sites such as dating sites.
Explains the constant shilling on tech sites preaching about how good intel is even though theyre overpriced and amd is within 10% of them for way less.
Probably shouldnt tell yall this but yeah you cant really trust reviews. I get paid 40-60 cents everytime I do one of 'their' jobs (whether its write a 5 star positive review on a product or a 1 star negative review) Confirmed buyers arent safe either. Sometimes they will give me money to buy the product just so I can give a "confirmed purchase" review
@@rickytrevino8281 That doesn't surprise me is not much different to how tech companies and such will just ship out free product to people with UA-cam tech channels with a good following. Granted often those don't explicitly say what the review should be but there is definitely an implicit understanding that more samples are likely to follow positive reviews, which given that getting free product saves them spending hundreds of dollar of their add revenue from each video on product is a massive incentive to scratch the manufacturers back. Really needs a change in the law to correct these sorts of problems though, I am not saying making paid/sponsored reviews illegal here either merely that they should be required to mark it as a paid advertisement if they have received any sponsorship or financial incentives from the seller of the product. Then it is up to the consumer to factor that in when they decide how to weight the information presented.
On Amazon, they even give you money to buy the product, so you are labeled as on of those trusted reviewers. Also, they want you to write 3-4* reviews with some uninteresting feature like for example "i would have liked more colors" so people can disregard it quickly and trust better reviews.
@@lordgarth1 They didn't. The law changed specifically because consumers were confused and thought that they couldn't remove the tag, either. That little caveat, "except by the consumer", was added specifically to clear things up. By then, however, the fact that it was illegal to remove the tag (for reasons no one could really figure out, specifically, which was part of the joke) was a part of pop culture.
I got in trouble one time, and my mom grounded me. I was so mad, I ripped that tag off and threw it at her, and said something like "now you're going to jail." I didn't understand why she laughed so hard at the time.
It is, but to be considered fraudulent the reviews have to come from an agent of a company posing as an average consumer while either doing a glowing review of their own product or totally destroying a competitors product with a negative review. There have been multiple high profile lawsuits and consent decrees for companies caught doing it. EA was hit with massive fines a few years back because they had an entire department of employees who's full time job it was to pose as unaffiliated consumers on forums/comment threads/etc and simultaneously defend everything EA put out and badmouth everything their competitors put out.
who is going to police that ?? there are literal companies in china with use bays and bays of mobile phones and tablets that place false reviews online for profit
I agree! I got my puppy from a shop that gets there dogs from a puppy mill and when I went to write a bad review I saw hundreds of reviews from people who just come in to get the puppies. Fake reviews and making a review without being a customer should be illegal
COSTCO! You can get a 10 inch thick memory foam mattress for like $400. That's a fourth of what the mattress stores charge, and they alot softer. Plus Costco offers returns based on customer satisfaction.
Softer mattress does not mean better mattress. Each person has an ideal mattress softness and should try which one feels better but yeah $400 for memory foam? Going to Costco rn
@@DrummingStig yeah bro at mine they have this sample one. It's like a 2 x 2 foot cut out you can sit on. They have mattress topper for like $80. Great deals, and yeah everyone has their preference. I like memory foam just cuz you can't feel springs after a while. And because you can sink into it.
I sold mattresses for 15 years - I just kinda got stuck in sales....never liked salesman. Everything he says is true. Worked for a big chain called Mattress Discounters (about 15 states) and we would sell the identical Sealy mattress as the place down the street, just with a different colored cover (called "ticking") and a different name. There are significant differences in the qualities of mattresses, however. Cheap coil mattresses, for instance, have less coils and they're made of thinner wire - so a cheap mattress will wear out a lot faster than a good mattress. And he's right about review sights - of course, that's true for all consumer products. Most review sights are bullshit put up by the companies, themselves. Capitalism has it's weak spots.
So is every other greedy business in the *United Corporations of America.* Especially the video game industry, which is suing Belgium to keep gambling unregulated so they can scam money out of the pockets of unsuspecting gamers using thinly veiled Skinner boxes.

He accused their sheets of giving people CANCER for crying out loud! Don't defend the guy or his claims, the lawsuit uncoved PROOF he was paid by the competition and his claims were PROVEN false in court and he's been ordered to pay damages and lawyer's fees. Yet desipte all that, he's already set up a new site under a new company name and is STILL doing the exact same thing. He's been found in contempt of the ruling and is now facing JAIL TIME FOR FRAUD (I believe). I'm typing this at 4 am and I haven't slept. Plz double-check my facts before spreading the rumour.
Can you give some advice on what an ACTUAL good mattress is like? I got several chronic illnesses making my joints and muscles very sensitive. Having a boxspring already helps a lot. But finding the wrong mattress can lead to me cramping up in the middle of the night. Because that only happens after a few hours, simply trying it out in store doesn't help me. What can I do?
@@ChibiYotsuba Consumer Reports rated mattresses recently. I chose a Casper based on their recommendations. My husband and I are thrilled with the choice. If you need to go cheaper make certain their return policies are great and that they offer like a 30 night free trial and they'll pick up the mattress if you don't want it after the trial period. I cheaped out for the spare room bed (cause Adam basically said buy a generic cause they're all made by the same companies) and they had a useless return policy so I can't return a bed that is only a little softer than a sleeping bag over a park bench!
Much of this is true till the end. There are small family owned manufacturers who sell direct and you can go watch them made and see the difference between 3 to 4 styles and make informed choices. In Ohio there is the Original Mattress factory. I worked there making the mattresses and running the quilting machine with a big glass window where customers could watch us work.
My mattress was tailor-made. Sure it was still expensive because it's being made to order, but you support a small business, get the exact product you need, and in my case, the mattress is fully reversible so I can extend its life!
@@neetard7360 Still confused about the American obsession with matresses tbh. Not really a product that's advertised a lot around here. If you are a cheapskate you buy a €100 foam matress from Lidl, if you are fancy you buy a €1000 boxspring from Auping. After 10-20 years you buy a new one.
it brings up a good point. I worked for the biggest Mattress company in the industry and at the end of the day theirs no where else to go and the industry knows it.
While buying a bed in 2012, I was so glad that I read an article about jacked up mattress prices in Consumer Reports Magazine, where I was advised to start my offer at 40%-50% of the tag price. My wife and I shopped around trying numerous mattresses until we found one that felt the best (marked at about $1,100). We ended up getting it for $580 by openly dealing with three competing stores against each other. We have been very happy with our bed. Probably a good alternative is IKEA, where we also shopped.
look up videos about the benefits of sleeping on the floor. Been doing it for the last 8 months and it was a game changer. No more sore lower back, more space in my room. And I just wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to go. That lazy feeling when you wake up in a bed is gone. Give it a try for a week. Also, use a contour pillow to support your neck. That should do the trick. Happy 2022!

Some things you cant. Let's say in this video, he says to buy from a new company called sleepa. Cheap mattresses and less scams. Well now he has publicly endorsed a company. The company sees increased traffic and Jack up prices and can fill the mattress with packing peanuts or something. Why? Because now that Adam endorsed them they can get away with more because of a celebrity seal of approval. Then when crap hits the fan, Adam is liable for endorsing a company even his statements were 100% true at the time of doing so. You can still buy a mattress just remember that there are 500 mattresses that are just as good as a 3000 mattress. And only order in your convenience. If you need to buy online one that is rolled up then do that. If you have time to go to a store and but one and carry it home do that also. Prices mean nothing and how it comes to you doesn't matter
@Salvadore Andretti Metal springs can be totally fine to sleep on. However, if you prefer memoryfoam, there's plenty of cheap options there too. There's basically no real reason to spend more than $1000 for a mattress.
For the record mattress companies have to inflate the price to stay in business. I used to work at one. A mattress store isn't like a Walmart or a kroger or a store that sees hundreds of customers a day. Most mattress stores see between 0-4 customers in a day. So if you have 1 or 2 people come in your store all day and you do not sell them anything then the store is losing money. Even when you do sell it if you dont sell it at a high enough margin above what you paid the manufacturer for it then the employee isn't going to make enough to get by on.
That only applies to brick and morter stores. Online mattress stores in theory should be able to offer much lower prices, but they dont because of monopoly on distribution channels
I went to a mattress shop once where the sales person was straight up honest with me. She said that MOST places actually have a 500% markup from wholesale cost. She said that their store was about 200-300%. There was another mattress store about a 1 min walk away down the strip mall and the prices totally played out like that. I was totally surprised but on hindsight shouldn't have been since 500% markup is common across many things, including clothing. I was just thinking that because they cost so much that the markup would be lower. She also said that yes, you can totally haggle for mattresses at any store. When all of the other mattress stores I went too did everything possible to hide that fact.
I went to one of those 'store closing' sales and found a queen size mattress that I otherwise couldn't afford. it was 50% off the ticket price, but I wanted more. I told them that if they could knock off another 150.00 and include the free delivery - free mattress removal, that I would buy it. The guy looked really confused and went to get his manager. They didn't seem to understand the concept of price haggling. I guess that a lot of people just buy mattresses on the sticker price..? After a couple minutes of them chatting at the managers desk, I walked over with my visa out and said "My lunch break is almost over, am I buying a mattress today, or do I keep looking?" The manger immediately rang up the sale, and I am very happy with my purchase, and the delivery service was great.(2 days later) A couple of months later the same store had signs up and down the street. "Grand Re-Opening". I couldn't tell you what they renovated. I think that they had a sale, and then went on a two month vacation. lol But it tells you a lot about pricing, when a major mattress chain with many stores in our city, can sell a mattress for 45% of the Suggested Retail with hardly any hesitation.
I'm sorry but i work in a furniture store and there God I hate it when people try to haggle its priced what it's priced because we paid half of that for it and we've got bills to pay.
@@thepinkestpigglet7529- Anecdotally, these businesses operate differently region to region, and sometimes store to store within franchises. Where I live, we know that the real landed cost of most furniture is around 10% of the retail ticket price, and most furniture sells for much less than the ticket price. Which is why furniture stores who have going out of business sales here, do really well for the last 2+ years, while they are selling (mostly clearance items) well below the normal advertised prices.

Know your preferred sleeping position (Back, Side, Stomach, Hybrid) 4. Take pictures of mattress info (foam layers, coils *if any*, warranty, brand, etc) for comparison. You can use these pics to identify yourself or get a salesperson to help show similarities or what's the difference 5. Just because something is more expensive, doesn't necessarily mean it's a better bed. I always tried to sell people on a bed that they like while trying to save them money (why buy a bed thats $2000 when there's one that's comparable that you like for half the cost?) 6. Ask about return policy. Where i worked at, we offered 1yr but the return value varied on when you brought back and on the brand (whether money back, in store credit or the brand didn't offer anything) sometimes. Most places offer 100 days on store credit 7. Ask family and friends for recommendations on mattresses, stores and/or salespeople to ask for. (Sometimes you can get referral bonuses from certain stores. We offered free pillows for being referred and gave you a check you could cash at your bank for referring people) 8. Know the warranty (how long, what is/isn't covered, do you need a mattress pad?) 9. Don't always believe that the bed you're looking at is on "sale". Lots of stores run "sales" to trap you into buying. We had a call back service to let you know if the price was changing or if we had any upcoming deals to get you the best deal. 10. Give a new bed some time to break in. Coiled beds on average take about 3-4 weeks to break in. Memory foam beds can take 4-8weeks to break in. The floor model most likely has been on display for months which is generally long enough to break in. That's why knowing return policy is important too 11. Most stores do carry disposable sheets to test mattresses and pillows out. Ask if you are worried about germs. 12. Don't be afraid to tell the salesperson if you want space or if you'd like some assistance. Not all of us are trying to be scam artists or smooth talkers. Some of us genuinely want to help. We know how important a good bed for sleep is and if we don't do our jobs right, we lose commission, a customer and hurt our reputation. If you have any questions, concerns or would like more info. Please reach out to me via UA-cam, email or Twitter. I no longer work in sales but still enjoy helping people out with their mattress/sleep needs.
as a mattess sales person the thing that always makes me so mad is the gel memory foam or cooling crap. In many independent reviews it was found that memory foam preformed about the same as gel foam, sometimes gel foam was worse. Like a mattress can't really be cooling, it's layers of insulation stacked up and stitched together for your comfort. Also, if you are a sweaty person foam mattresses aren't a good idea for you as they can collect water like a sponge and then grow mold.
@@Boguardis If your body generatates a lot of heat then this heat will transfer to your mattress cover and then to a foam mattress. Once the heat cools off it will produce moisture which will be absorbed into the mattresses and turn into mold over time. So the mattress cover won't help really with the mold growth problem.
Man, this is what I hate about Adam Ruins Everything. 90% of the time the "solution" to the issue is "there isn't one, tough shit" and all the video does for me is make me sad.
Adam: This industry is ripping you off. Other Person: Oh no, what can I do? Adam: Nothing. They control everything, and we're all screwed. Roll Credits. ~75% of episodes of Adam Ruins Everything.
And then there's FIBERGLASS. It's the cheapest way to comply with fire resistance laws. But WHEN (not if) the mattress ages enough for the fiberglass to poke its way out and escape, it is extremely itchy and irritates the lungs & eyes. In large enough quantities, fiberglass is almost impossible to remove from clothes and fabrics. It can require wardrobes to be thrown out, walls repainted, carpet replaced, and more. If the fiberglass leak is bad enough, it will contaminate your home's air vents and make the air painful to breathe (the only solution is to have all the air ducts in your home replaced). Companies (even large name brands) save a dime by using fiberglass, but eventually it will cost the consumer 10s of thousands of dollars in home repair unless the consumer notices it in time. It's basically as if most beds came with hibernating bedbugs just waiting for their chance to strike. And it's 100% legal because fiberglass is technically non-toxic. Companies even often mislead (using the word "silica" instead of "glass fiber" because silica is the only ingredient in fiberglass; claim they use "wool" when it's actually "glass wool" aka fiberglass, etc) or outright lie (when asked directly) about if their products contain fiberglass. They'll even be tricky with where they place the fiberglass within the mattress so that they can use loopholes to exclude fiberglass from the legal tag. The corporate greed makes me feel sick
Being someone who has been in the industry for 12 years in a variety of capacities I can say, 100%spot on. I can say also that where you buy the mattress has everything to do with how much you pay. Go to mattress firm, get a Simmons beauty rest black hybrid, your going to pay out the nose. Go to some little mom and pop selling their unadvertised brand with the same features and it's a fraction of the cost. Just like with any consumer good you pay something for the name. One of the worst things consumers do to themselves is ask the salesperson what they recommend, and 9 times out of 10 it will be the most expensive model on the floor. The folks I am with take a different tact, we ask questions designed to lead you to the comfort level which is the best fit for you. One of the ways mattress salesmen get over is with their "sleep guarantee" which is worthless and which is really designed to drag even more money out of you. Another is with the warranty, first off true warranty defects are actually rare based upon how these are uniformly written across the industry. Having been someone who has dealt with the sales and warranty sides of the equation I can say 98% of warranty complaints truly are perception and comfort issues. But those are not what are actually going to be considered true manufacturing defects, and to be honest on a vast majority of claims that do actually meet those thresholds 95+% of the time there will be something that will disqualify the claim such as a improperly supported frame, stains, or my favorite, using the old box spring. No matter which side of the equation I have been on my advice is still the same. Find the mattress that seems like the best fit for the back and the pocket book and if you have two models you like equally just go with the lower price option because you have to be just that much more less right.
Ya I’ve been in the industry a long time myself and if there’s a stain on the mattress warranty is void fucks a lot of people over it seems like mattress protector is a rip off buts it’s pretty important to get one
How is this any different than cars, groceries or anything else. Its not, or in other words he's sensationalizing the retail sales industry. not he had no actual evidence about product quality and talked about poor behavior from a hand full of fly by night mattress companies form 100 years ago. Not does he mention it was the mattress industry that lobbied and got laws past to force better certification and force out scam artist. he does not mention it was the mattress manufacturers that lobbied to get Saftey, quality and labeling laws past.
My bed is still good, I put memory foam on top of the mattress until it's like sleeping on a giant marshmallow. If I need to replace it after a few years, I only pay $20 or $30 bucks for new memory foam. So unless the mattress itself has gotten mold or bugs, I don't gotta shop for a good long time. Zzzzzz.
@@warriorfire8103 Not sure. But I'm sure you'll easily find them if you check at Superstore or London Drugs. I unroll it onto my mattress before tucking the fitted sheet over it. It's like those featherbed mats, but way less messy.

Sleep is for the weak
I'm a former mattress store manager and salesman of 20 years. I can explain some of these things.
The reason you'll never see the same mattress in 2 different stores or the same mattress has different names is because of Sears. Sears wanted Sealy to make an exclusive line of mattresses just for them. Once other retailers saw that Sears had an exclusive line, they all wanted to have their own exclusive lines. Now retailers can completely customize their lineups and exclusive products are the norm. Most of the time, you don't actually see the exact same mattresses with different names, you have what they call "comparable" mattresses because there will be some differences (like how many layers of foam they have and in what order or a different cover.)
Markup is generally pretty high in the mattress business. Originally, it was because most mattress salesmen work on commission (I did) and they needed to have some room for customers to haggle. Today, it's mostly just because corporations are greedy.
One very typical scam is to put a mattress "on sale" by lying about the original price and then offering the actual price as a sale price. For example, one company I worked for would double the original price and then make it "buy one get one free."
Don't ever pay the retail price in a mattress store. We had to pretend to call the regional manager to get permission to sell at the burn price (and it only paid a 2% commission.)
I'm kinda surprised that this video didn't cover the biggest scam in the mattress industry; the warranties.
Tfw years later you see this, and you pay the "sale" price
At least we really really liked it and continue to like it. So I guess we got that going for us with some free pillows thrown in :/

@@aeonjoey3d really? I worked in IKEA in the past and we allowed refunds

Also mattresses were built symmetrically which allowed you to make it last longer by flipping it regularly, but now they make them one sided
^
Facts
The key is to avoid that nonsense about pillow tops and pocket coils and box spring compatibility. Private companies can and do make simply-constructed mattresses. And while private mattress makers are still in the same range of prices (because they can both get away with matching the big brands and they have bigger overhead costs because they're small), you're getting a product made specific for you.
And can Isaac newton tell us a little about why flipping mattresses don’t do anything for it’s durability?

(Our town supposedly sifts through trash, but I'm not sure I believe that.)
I've been wondering what kind of bed to get that would provide the same relief, last longer and be friendlier to the environment.
Explains the constant shilling on tech sites preaching about how good intel is even though theyre overpriced and amd is within 10% of them for way less.
Probably shouldnt tell yall this but yeah you cant really trust reviews. I get paid 40-60 cents everytime I do one of 'their' jobs (whether its write a 5 star positive review on a product or a 1 star negative review)
Confirmed buyers arent safe either.
Also, they want you to write 3-4* reviews with some uninteresting feature like for example "i would have liked more colors" so people can disregard it quickly and trust better reviews.

it should be illegal to write reviews fraudulently
It is, but to be considered fraudulent the reviews have to come from an agent of a company posing as an average consumer while either doing a glowing review of their own product or totally destroying a competitors product with a negative review.
There have been multiple high profile lawsuits and consent decrees for companies caught doing it. EA was hit with massive fines a few years back because they had an entire department of employees who's full time job it was to pose as unaffiliated consumers on forums/comment threads/etc and simultaneously defend everything EA put out and badmouth everything their competitors put out.
I'm giving your statist comment one star.

Consumer Reports rated mattresses recently.
The company sees increased traffic and Jack up prices and can fill the mattress with packing peanuts or something. Why? Because now that Adam endorsed them they can get away with more because of a celebrity seal of approval. Then when crap hits the fan, Adam is liable for endorsing a company even his statements were 100% true at the time of doing so. there are other companies that make mattresses. He is giving you knowledge on why it is hard to compare prices so you can look closer then compare prices yourself. Always do research before purchasing item that cost over $800 as a normal price.
You can be a minimalist and sleep on the floor lol.
Don't buy an expensive mattress. That's what you do with it.
Even when you do sell it if you dont sell it at a high enough margin above what you paid the manufacturer for it then the employee isn't going to make enough to get by on.
thats why the aggressive overexpansion of mattress stores did damage to both the companies and the consumer.
So in a day you can only get 4 customers... is it wrong I want to work at a mattress store now?
@@dantheman8103 Dude, same! I can't imagine selling Mattresses would be too difficult. Sheeeeeeyit

I told them that if they could knock off another 150.00 and include the free delivery - free mattress removal, that I would buy it. The guy looked really confused and went to get his manager. They didn't seem to understand the concept of price haggling. I guess that a lot of people just buy mattresses on the sticker price..?
After a couple minutes of them chatting at the managers desk, I walked over with my visa out and said "My lunch break is almost over, am I buying a mattress today, or do I keep looking?"
The manger immediately rang up the sale, and I am very happy with my purchase, and the delivery service was great.(2 days later)
A couple of months later the same store had signs up and down the street. "Grand Re-Opening". I couldn't tell you what they renovated. I think that they had a sale, and then went on a two month vacation. lol
But it tells you a lot about pricing, when a major mattress chain with many stores in our city, can sell a mattress for 45% of the Suggested Retail with hardly any hesitation.
When I worked in this industry. It was a pain. We manufactured our own mattresses while also selling the big name brands. We also had to on our own unpaid time. Go out and do competitive shopping to know what mattresses were called compared to what we called. Also, had to watch out for shady/illegal deals or "sales". There's so much to know. It's alot to learn, understand and remember even for people like me who were in management positions. I always tried to be honest and upfront with customers but like car dealers. Furniture salesmen get a bad rep because of the few bad apples out there or the shady practices of some businesses.
Tips/knowledge for shopping
1. Know what size you want (T, TXL, FXL, Q, K, Cal K)
2. Know what comfort level you like (Soft, Medium, Firm)
3. Know your preferred sleeping position (Back, Side, Stomach, Hybrid)
4. Take pictures of mattress info (foam layers, coils *if any*, warranty, brand, etc) for comparison. You can use these pics to identify yourself or get a salesperson to help show similarities or what's the difference
5. Just because something is more expensive, doesn't necessarily mean it's a better bed. I always tried to sell people on a bed that they like while trying to save them money (why buy a bed thats $2000 when there's one that's comparable that you like for half the cost?)
6. Ask about return policy. Where i worked at, we offered 1yr but the return value varied on when you brought back and on the brand (whether money back, in store credit or the brand didn't offer anything) sometimes. Most places offer 100 days on store credit
7. Ask family and friends for recommendations on mattresses, stores and/or salespeople to ask for. (Sometimes you can get referral bonuses from certain stores. We offered free pillows for being referred and gave you a check you could cash at your bank for referring people)
8. Know the warranty (how long, what is/isn't covered, do you need a mattress pad?)
That's why knowing return policy is important too
I'm a mold and can confirm this, without my sweaty person, I would be nowhere
You're really saying that different materials don't breathe differently? What? Also if you're that afraid of mold they make covers for you....
If you're selling mattresses you should be selling overpriced "mattress protectors" and should use the sweaty mold as a selling point.
@@Boguardis If your body generatates a lot of heat then this heat will transfer to your mattress cover and then to a foam mattress. Once the heat cools off it will produce moisture which will be absorbed into the mattresses and turn into mold over time. So the mattress cover won't help really with the mold growth problem.
can we do a one-on-one?
Man, this is what I hate about Adam Ruins Everything. 90% of the time the "solution" to the issue is "there isn't one, tough shit" and all the video does for me is make me sad.
+darkghor I am pretty sure that is less Adam's fault and more the fault of capitalism but meh.
Adam: This industry is ripping you off.
Other Person: Oh no, what can I do?
Adam: Nothing. They control everything, and we're all screwed.

It's called Adam ruins everything. Not Adam solves everything.
darkghor in every episode i’ve seen with serious issues, have solutions. also now you’re informed, that’s better than being ignorant
Tbh that podcast guy has such a relaxing voice
It'll help you sleep better than those overpriced matresses

Yes i love him for that. So many other good videos he has as well.

Always a fan of being ruined.

What about the fact that mattress stores are everywhere but no one seems to be shopping in them
Being someone who has been in the industry for 12 years in a variety of capacities I can say, 100%spot on.
Spot on.
It's extremely rare that I see a post this long that's worth reading all the way through.
Zzzzzz.
That sounds amazing. I'm doing it. What kind do you use?
Also need to know
Wish i had done that i got a matress with it stitched inside, now im stuck with it and cant ass another 2in of foam, the sheet wont fit X(
@@warriorfire8103 Not sure. But I'm sure you'll easily find them if you check at Superstore or London Drugs. I unroll it onto my mattress before tucking the fitted sheet over it. It's like those featherbed mats, but way less messy.
I did the same too! Very happy, got mine at bed bath and beyond, and got 20% off the memory foam!
I sawed this mattress in half!
And fixed it with Flexicoil™!
That's a lotta damage
