Hello, I have this same car and engine. My question is, does this sensor only give information about the needle or is it responsible for activating the fan?
The connector has a tab, press the tab and pull both end of the connector, make sure to spray around the connector with silicone spray for easy disconnect

This sensor give you the gauge reading
The other sensor from the thermostat turn on the Radiator fan
Did your check engine light come on when your gauge went out?
The engine light dont comes on this type of problem. The gauge on the cluster only show overheating, thats when i diagnose and replace the sensor
How do you take it off though with distributor in the way.
Used a socket with a 6" extension
Could this happen if showing full hot the gauge ?
I have the same problem did you find a fix?
