I’m happy the cars that made it into the movie did so. Here in the UK we didn’t get the Nissan Maxima, and the Volkswagen Jetta was called a Vento, but nobody really bought them. So it was good to see some original cars in the mix rather than the usual suspects.
Always wanted to see an Aussie Holden in the films, now I know why. No Australian characters. Still by 2005 they could've used a Pontiac GTO (a rebadged LHD aussie built Holden Monaro) Another awesome video Craig!
The one thing that I always thought would add to the movie was a domestic versus import rivalry at race wars. The 2001 Z06 had just come out in the year 2000. Mustangs were also hot for drag racing. Not make them a large part of the movie but even a cameo scene touching on what was at the time a really hot topic. Our local race tracks had domestic versus import night frequently
What I find funny is the Jesse character for Midnight Club 2 was called Steven. He was super technical and talked about boost and fuel curves constantly and his character in the game drives the unlicensed version of an Audi 4 door called an Emu.
Thank you Craig for everything you do for car culture. Doms RX7 was a great choice and wish we could've seen more of it in the films. I bought my 3rd gen shortly after the release of the first movie. I was mostly inspired by the initial D anime and the arcade machine.
I grew up in So Cal during the late 90s and saw first hand the street racing scene and the import scene you described. You hit the nail on the head with describing what cars were hot and people were driving.
Craig's pretty much perfect with the impressions of the reject cars like the Hyundai, Kia, Miata etc. My Friends and I thought pretty much the exact same thing. I hated Hyundai even more back then (and still kinda do, although theyve come a long way) because I always thought they intentionally made their name close to Honda.
He's saying he would have won the race so he wouldn't have had to run because he raced for pinks and it was his dad's car. So Tran would have lost and gave him the S2K.
I have always have the same thoughts about how the cars were not abused/purposely crashed by the owners/drivers in the script in the first movie make them seem a lot more special and relatable. It also made the moments when the Eclipse and Charger get wrecked a lot more powerful. Civics wasn't as much as they was 3 on screen and were the characters main car.
If Tran drove a Mustang, Jesse’s confidence would have been even funnier. At least with the S2000, when it was new and the movie was made, tuning companies were having a really hard time with it. Most aftermarket parts made it slower. So you could make the argument that as long as the Jetta could run faster than the 14.1 a stock S2000 could do, he knew he would probably win.
I think the VW Jetta fit Jesse the best a BMW or Audi would have been too flashy. A Saab 900, 9-3 Viggen, or a modded 9-5 would have been another good fit although I'd cringe to see what universal would do to make it more visually appealing so thanks for not ruining those for me.

The 1997-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP would have fit in well. At the time they were pretty fast, lots of parts available. The supercharged 3800 (L67) was a damn near bullet proof engine. (If you replace the valve cover gaskets and convert to aluminum coolant elbows)
I thought he said it was Pete Tran was going to get a Mustang. Then they changed the name to Johnny Tran probably because the producers liked Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat or something ridiculous like that.
Hurts, my dude. Hurts. T_T. I'll have you know I've owned my 2007 GT for 3 years and I've only hit two pedestrians! Only killed one. Was their fault, too - they should have known better than to be standing on a sidewalk when I was rolling through.
I have to say - I’m pretty lucky to be owning a 300ZX but the only example I have ever saw in the FNF films was a sticker of the stillen Le Mans 300ZX in Brian’s room... Craig, if I do remember - the fnf was inspired by street racing that particularly had a black 300zx as one of the main vehicles mentioned. Any reason why it was not even used as an extra vehicle in ANY of the films?
The confusing thing is though, Jesse's Volkswagen Jetta was known as the Vento here in the UK so when my Dad owned an older Jetta (when it was called a Jetta), people asked if it was the same type of car in TFaTF
F&F 1,2, 3, were the best ones released. The rest were awesome, just nothing like the first ones. It's like going from Need for Speed to John Wick lol Doesn't quite add up!
Oh, and no, no Hyundais or Kias back in 2000. I worked at a Chevy dealership that sold Kias as well back then and the only car they had was the Sephia and they were ALL bare bones. They didn't even have a radio. They were cheap turds...econoboxes. Hyundai all had Mitsubishi engines at the time, and none of them were turbo here in the US.
Honestly, a riced out Hyundai would’ve fit Brian instead of the eclipse, because he kept getting teased and laughed at for being a granny-shifter with giant NOS tanks.
The S2k, the Eclipse, the Integra, the EG Civic, and even Hector's Accord wagon were all included in the first movie...I realize that you know this, I'm just saying.
I read somewhere that the original Fast and Furious was supposed to have a Dodge Neon RT, but it was voted not cool enough or believable that it was Fast. Even tho they actually were pretty fast, especially with a bigger turbo than stock!
Man.. wish the 86 was in there.. I wish they woulda kept the same level of cars in the films. It just got crazier and crazier other than a few odd gems. Watching a movie with everyone driving supercars blows. It doesn't resonate with the actual car culture unless you're a millionaire

I have had 3 vx220 and it’s a shame any lotus or “Opel speedster” never made it into the movies but considering they were never sold in the US (vx220, Elise s1, exeige s1) I now understand why
Good point at the end. The first 3, possibly 4 movies, the cars were like characters with their own story arch. Brian’s eclipse gets destroyed halfway through, the Supra gets built and is used for the rest of the film. The Camaro and Challenger in the second movie, you know where those cars came from and what happened to them. In the new movies they’re like props. Dom shows up in a GTX with no explanation of where it comes from, one scene, it’s wrecked and then gone never to be spoken about again, they’re forgettable, almost like how the movies have become.
@Peter Angles When I say turner culture I mean the movement that started in the ‘90s with Japanese imports that people were modding both performance and body wise, not just having engine mods available in general. Mustangs were more widely used for an American go to during that time, and a large part of that was just because they were more popular cars overall, so there was a lot more companies catering that support specifically in body modifications (there were also a ton of riced out Mustangs to come out of that era because of it). Not to mention all the aftermarket companies building Mustangs like Roush, Steeda and Saleen during that time as well. That’s why it was initially planned to be Tran’s car.
cuz the whole point of the first movie was to showcase the japanese import tuner scene. that’s specifically WHY you didn’t see any firebirds, camaros or mustangs. dom’s charger being the only exception
good move on the Hyundai absence. Looking back I always thought the Tiburon was "forced" into the 2000s tuning scene via Need For Speed Underground and such.
So Craig, I have an earnest question which I don't think has ever been asked or answered. Even though it sounds like it was considered for Paul's hero car, why is the Z32 so obviously missing from the movies? Seems like you skipped over them straight to the Z33 and Z34.
They could make a spin-off and get this franchise back online by having dom's Rx 7 being found or even do something with any of the old og cars
That be a good netflix series
There is actually a Netflix animation series... I'm not saying it's good or vad, just that there is one.

My dad used to have a first gen GS! They are impossible to find now in clean condition! Humbles me that it was considered for vince's car!

I still don’t like them. Hyundai’s and Kia’s are always bought by people who don’t care about cars. They drive them that way too

I think the cars in the original F&F were more grounded to reality and that is much more appealing to me than what came in the later movies.
@7:32 Miata's were almost strictly autocross cars in the mid 90's to early 2000's. They started getting more popular after 2005 ish as a "tuner" car.

Agreed. When I think of FF, I think of tuner cars. Not Mustangs jumping off cliffs.
F&F 1,2, 3, were the best ones released. The rest were awesome, just nothing like the first ones. It's like going from Need for Speed to John Wick lol Doesn't quite add up!

Mustangs would've made more sense just because they're bigger in the tuner culture.
