  • Nissan changed the rules of racing with the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R. It earned the name Godzilla by dominating everything Toyota, Honda, BMW and Ford had to offer. The RB26DETT and ATTESA ET-S system turned the R32 GT-R into the fastest production car. Find out how the top secret 901 Movement created the GT-R and many other cars at Nissan in the 90's.

    Fun fact: every generation of the GT-R, starting from the R32 have set a lap record at the Nürbugring. No wonder why Porsche were so salty and accused Nissan of cheating.

    • @a.m3687
      @a.m3687 4 місяці тому +45

      @@tom.m I won't call it cheating. Most of the cars that have set a lap record at the Ring was not 100% factory stock. Including Porsches, Vipers and etc. Porsche runs their cars with the deletion of A/C, Audio and Communication systems. Also with the racing bucket seat from the GT3 Cup race car. What made them look salty was that they accused Nissan of cheating without any proof.
      In my opinion those times doesn't matter and cannot be compared. Because we never know what damper settings, tyre pressures and weight reductions the manufacturer is using to shave off seconds for the actual lap time.

      A thing I learned recently is if you look up the lap times for the GTR Skylines, You will find that the R32's lap was in wet conditions. in comparison to the R33 and R34.
      R32 did a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 8:22.38, Key point here, That lap was In the wet.
      R33 did it in 7:59.887 In the dry.
      R34 managed a 7:52 again in the dry.
      But, at the end of the R32 in 1994 they took it around the Nürburgring Nordschleife and managed a time of 7:49 in the dry in a R32 N1 GTR. Because this was faster than the upcoming R33, it was kept quiet.

    In the second half of the 1980s I worked for a major automotive magazine, and went to Nissan to interview a few brasses, including Yasuharu Namba of NISMO. He was a man of small stature, friendly and gentle and yet not prone to over-familiarity, and I couldn't help sensing that he always had a couple of projects being developed inside his head at all times. When Yutaka Kume announced the 901 movement, almost everyone at the editorial office was skeptical as Nissan seemed like a basket case at the time, I was one of two who were convinced that they're going to pull it off. With hindsight, those were the heady, glory days: heroes could well be those mild-mannered middle-age men in suits and ties, with the fires of a teenager within them.

      During that era Aussie had strict rules governing a certain percentage of Australian manufactured content in mass produced cars known as the Australian Design Rule (ADR). Solid goosebumps watching this episode mate!! Love the channel!
    Fun fact: Stock v's stock, the Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO was quicker to 100kph than the R32 GT-R lol
    Being Australian and growing up during the time of the GT-R's completely dominating here in our group-A racing... there was quite a bit of "interesting modifications" done to the GT-R's. MANY Nismo parts being delivered in plain Nissan boxes if you get what I mean. That was comfirmed many years later when talking over a beer (or twelve) with a team owner and several engineers..They also back in the early 90's added severe weight penalties due to them out performing all the other cars.
    Epic episode!

    The r32 is the car that got me into cars. I was a 90s kid that only had access to my dads old car mags until the early 2000s. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Had the r32 in them for one reason or another and I fell in love with its goofy style of sedan-esque/performance car styling and those 4 round brake lights. The constant wins of the skyline line didn’t hurt either. This documentary only servers to further enhance my love for the car and it’s weird case of being both under and over rated.

    Absolutely LOVED this video! I remember watching the GTR thoroughly dominate the competition at Bathurst, and falling in love with it. That dominance spawned a love affair, and a cult following here in Australia that is probably stronger now than ever, so much so that most of us can't afford one. What we can afford however is the GTR's forgotten baby brother, the GTS-4. With basically the same attessa system, hiding behind an RB20 instead of the legendary RB26, it's ripe for those of us who can forgive it's lesser nameplate for the opportunity to create something a little different, but much more affordable.

This video was so great on detailing the technical history and matching social responses worldwide. I was at Bathurst when Godzilla one. Rainy day big crashes really close racing,and the GTR blasted all that challenged. I worked at Holden GMH. The Nismo teams opened the eyes of many, professionals involved with advances that were developed at the same time as they raced. Electronic data that other companies dreamed about referencing, the GTR had destroyed all that year in group A. I've owned or driven most of the Nissans from the late 80's early 90's, brilliant handling cars, except the HICAS stuff, there's nothing more terrifying than tipping a car into a corner at speed and have it do something you weren't expecting, you get used to it, I'm sure it's 'better', but sheesh, the heart skips a beat!
