There are videos on here of former guests on the show and they said it was all staged. MTV would rent a house to film the fake introduction part with Xzibit and the cars were decorated to look worse than they were and the producers would decide what theme the car was going to decorated. There was a pimped out van with a jewelery maker startion installed which was sold after the show and bought by popular UA-camr Tavarish who fixed it up and gave it to his friend Hoovie as a joke.

I think it might have inspired some people to be interested in cars but it was on par with Cribs for being garbage nonsense.. That said I watched the hell out of both when I was like 12.
The girl with 67* mustang they did lived in my town. Her car caught an electrical fire and burned to the ground very shortly after the show and they said welp oops your problem 😬
The PMR minivan that Tavarish/Hoovie's Garage showed on their channels wasn't even the same one they started with, apparently that one was in too bad a condition for West Coast Customs to work with (since they don't really 'fix' them)...
When they started branding with Best Buy, my son, a BB auto tech, got to be in one of their episodes and go to Michigan for a NASCAR race. Carl Edwards drove the WCC/ BB Ford. He had a blast for a couple of weeks.
@@ihatethatyoutubedisplaysyo8106 NO ONE ever listened to his music then or now, he’s just the guy who pinches peoples shoulders and let’s them know they’ve been pimped
I'm convinced that most of car guys (and gals) in their 20's and 30's right now, were mostly influenced by these guys. I'm 26 and Pimp My Ride was the first time I saw car customization to even be a thing.
Powerblock.....maaaan, that used to be great to watch. I also grew up watching Motorweek. I don't know if or when the west coast got to watch that show, but I'm in NJ so they're legit 90 minutes away. RIP Pat Goss
There was also a huge overlap in the show I watched first, with Boyd Coddington before he died called American Hotrod. Some mechanics, think one named Rich (but maybe he also went to a pawn show store to work) you later saw in either or both. I think that Dwayne guy who was a piece of shit, bald and 2nd man with Boyd. I mean, production companies can't edit so many terrible things about him when they didn';t film it first so it's not like they just showed him to be bad. Anyway, you saw them in Pimp my Ride and CHip Foose his show which aired back then as well. Chip Foose worked for Boyd Coddington I believe, at least they had a big rivalry.
My comment is pretty messed up but am far from sober, and dont'want to put it in the correct order :) Hope it's clear enough. I'm not even a hot rod fan (as European I guess, not so popular here) but I do like craftmanship and those results. I also remember that bit of a slow guy being fired and then show up in another car overhaul show, Mike I think his name was. Often wearing a red cap. He messed up several times, but his work was pretty good!
Wasn't there also a thing on Pimp My Ride where they would just straight up replace the car with a different one that was in better condition and then pimp that? Sometimes it wasn't even the exact same make or model?
I remember one episode they let the guy keep his cause he was going to school to be a mechanic. They thought it be a good project car so the show gave him a different car & pimped it out.
Paying employees less than minimum is inexcusable, especially considering Ryan (the owner) is racking in millions. There is no way I would reward a business like that with my business. Not that I’m rolling in cash but anyone that is should go somewhere else (to someone that does quality work, while also paying their workers a good salary).
Wage theft in the US is more money per year than all other theft combined, $15 billion, excluding police asset seizure which I believe is the second highest coming in around $3ish billion. In 2014 the police seized more property than was actually reported stolen.
to build on what your saying; if i found out that the troopers working on my car were not getting paid right, i would really be worried that they wont do a good job because the incentive isnt there, and i dont blame them. minimum wage means minimum effort. Also if an owner steals from their employees they are probably jacking up the prices beyond whats reasonable. Its just bad news all round. Besides, getting a $100k car is always gonna turn heads. You dont need to be an idiot and ride in something that really just looks weird and different. I saw west coast do a Rolls-Royce for Justin Bieber, and it looks horrible. From the work ive seen there, bad wages or not, its just not worth it.
I remember back in the day when Overhaulin was on it was slowly coming out those cars were never finished. I remember the Nova with the cherries on it or something i think the owner sued them or something because the car was never finished the paint was terrible also i think it broke down from the get go.
@@gearjammergamer8560 Yeah I had heard rumors that there was a few episodes where they did the body, but the motor was never even hooked up during the "reveal." They did "awesome work" if you want to believe it was actually them doing it. On another note, Orange County Choppers was another show everybody loved. Just watched a video the other day how one of their $80,000 bikes are now worth $3,000-$8,000. I called them "Cake Decorators" because they never truly made a "badass" bike. They added decorations to them to make them look cool, but the motors were small, tires too big, no suspension, everything for a recipe for a bike you won't love to ride, but looks cool. 🤨

West Coast Customs was a STAPLE of my childhood. Saying their name made me feel like I knew what was going on in the automotive world, when I really had no idea
west coast customs was a small part of what we saw, yet there were more like overhaulin with chip foose and his team, american chopper, boyd coddington's hot rod show (there were more but cant seem to remember)
This guy James is so funny. I love his story telling, the way he points out something being crazy. Great job James, really entertaining and good content. Thorough also
Top gear is the most overrated show ever, borderline annoying specially Clarkson. Pimp my ride was a totally different type of show that no one had ever seen before. And it was all right in the middle of the fast and furious craze.
@@syrthdr09sybr34 I agree pimp my ride was a completely different type of car show, but saying that top gear was overrated isn't entirely true. The main thing you got to remember was that it was a British show, with a different style of humour and a whole different point of view than America. One of the big appeals for me was that it was 3 old guys who love cars complaining about stuff that, for them, ruins the fun of driving cars.
@@jollimaiahtacksworth Don't get me wrong I did watch top gear from time to time but mainly for the badass cars, since I always found the jokes too cheesy and the hosts too awkward. I remember being so fascinated by most of the crazy shit they used to do.
I’m the first person to have their minivan pimped at their shop. I was featured in their Sema 2013 episode in collaboration with Chrysler. As cool as it was, the build was super shady and had to be redone after the episode aired. Lucky for me, my ex wife took the piece of crap in our divorce. 😂

It would be cool to see Donut do a video on what's going on with Hoonigan. It's sad to see creators and procurors of cult-like followings getting pushed out of the company they built.
Pimp and overhaulin were two of my favourites, me and a classmate bonded because of that show. We had nothing in common apart from we wanted to do modifications, I had art and design he had technical knowledge.

Shaq has ripped off some folks as well. There's a motorcycle place in Florida that built a special $50k chopper for him, and he never picked it up, or paid the bill. It was so big, the techs had to use wood blocks to operate the controls.

I love how they went full circle from starting out in a residential area for retired dentists to ending up in a residential area for retired dentists

Paying employees less than minimum is inexcusable, especially considering Ryan (the owner) is racking in millions. There is no way I would reward a business like that with my business. Wage thieves are the lowest scum.
I wouldn’t let Feildinghause touch my car with James’s or Nolan’s pole.
Wage theft in the US is more money per year than all other theft combined, $15 billion, excluding police asset seizure which I believe is the second highest coming in around $3ish billion. In 2014 the police seized more property than was actually reported stolen.
It's insanely expensive to run a custom shop in California.
to build on what your saying; if i found out that the troopers working on my car were not getting paid right, i would really be worried that they wont do a good job because the incentive isnt there, and i dont blame them. minimum wage means minimum effort.
