The 2023 Audi e-Tron Chronos Is An Electric SUV That Puts Comfort & Luxury First

  • Around 4 years ago, Audi introduced their first-ever fully dedicated electric vehicle called the #Audietron. It had all the luxury and tech you'd expect from Audi, but it didn't quite have the range and the acceleration EV buyers expected from other brands like Tesla. For 2023, the #etron gets a bit more range but expect the upcoming heavily revised #Q8etron to rectify some of the flaws of this original model.

Happy Friday everyone! We just wanted to quickly clarify, we filmed this video BEFORE Audi announced the big refresh on this model, including the name change to Q8 e-tron for 2024. We should be getting our hands on one sometime next year so expect an updated review then! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I have a 2019 e-Tron "First Edition" and it has been a phenomenal vehicle...probably the best I've owned. It is a very comfortable-riding vehicle, luxurious inside and the fit & finish leaves the other electric car competition in the dust. All this with no maintenance. It's been a joy to own.
The one drawback for me is range. Although Audi has improved it over the past few years on newer models, my 2019 gets 190-200 miles per charge which is no problem for daily driving, but inconvenient on long trips.

I absolutely love the Etron. I too just bought a CPO 2019 First Edition with every option available and I can’t tell you how much I love it. I traded in my 2022 Q7 and couldn’t be happier. I am averaging 250 miles if I charge to 100%, but I’m super aggressive with the regenerative breaking…it’s like a game to see how efficient I can make it.

I purchased the 2022 version of this vehicle in white with brown interior. It was initially a non-retail sale mobility vehicle for the dealership. I l live it, coming from an SQ7. Yes, it’s slower 0-60, but I have never found the need to drive in that manner from a standstill. It is quicker than the usual ICE vehicles at stoplights allowing me to change lanes when needed.

220 miles for $80,000+ just doesn’t cut it anymore. Considering that’s the *optimal* range, I worry how it fares in cold temps. My commute is pretty substantial, granted it’s not 200 miles a day but it’s annoying to charge minimum every other day. Audio sure charges a premium but the money doesn’t seem to go into the range.

I recently got a low mileage 2019 Prestige e-tron for a great price, that’s over $10k less than the GV60 Performance. I have to say, I absolutely love it. Most comfortable car I’ve ever had. Comparing it to a Tesla is like chalk and cheese. The Tesla Model Y I had was far quicker and hard a better range. But this is so much more luxurious and comfortable, and more than quick enough, that it’s a clear winner fully my needs. I don’t know if I’d say the same though if I had paid it’s full price as you had yours optioned. But it’s worth considering a low mileage 2nd hands one.

I looked hard at this and ultimately decided to wait for the Q8. I think they are going to have trouble selling these models with the next one right around the corner having meaningfully more range which really is the biggest concern for the e-tron. Unfortunately, I feel like I'm going to be waiting for a while to order and take delivery here in the US. But no doubt this car is incredibly appealing and makes Tesla look and feel like a toy brand. Also the acceleration felt amazing to me coming from an ICE. I think driving ridiculously fast accelerating cars warps your expectations of how fast a car should need to accelerate.

As always a thorough and in-depth interview - very detailed. I do beg to differ with regard to your interpretation and perception of the Audi Etron’s off-road abilities. It is most definitely intended for extreme all terrain driving conditions. I suggest you watch the Autogefühl review with Thomas from four years ago and perhaps you will reconsider this viewpoint. It is an Audi Quattro at heart, after all, and they are without doubt one of the best performing 4 wheel drive vehicles made in Europe if not the world. Also take a look at the testing that Audi had the vehicle “endure” in the depths of Scandinavia or the video presented by Ken Block if you are still not convinced… thanks again for the great review, of what is in my mind, one of the best made - in all respects to quality - EV SUV currently being sold.

I guess the question is: why WOULD you "brake torque" an EV? I thought the whole point of that was to build boost in a Turbo or to build revs in the engine. Neither of which are present in an EV

    • @Farly98

What do you mean by brake torque?

    • @devongee1776
      @devongee1776 Рік тому +1

@Paul Miller brake torque (in a(n) automatic transmission car that doesn't have built-in launch control), is when you put one foot on the brake pedal and the other on the accelerator and this way you're building revs in the engine without moving and 'launch' it that way.
It's not something any automaker would recommend you doing but these journalists are just driving press vehicles that will never be sold to a customer so they're happy to beat the shit out of them.
      To do it:
-with gear set in "D", "Drive": depress the brake pedal to the floor
-Use the other foot to build revs in the engine.** Depending on where your engine makes boost can depend where you want to go so there's no real number universal to any car. For the Kia Stinger I used to have, I believe launch control was 2000 or 2200RPM.**
-simultaneously let go of the brake and fully press the accelerator to complete 'launch'.

Before buying any electric check the price of the battery. If dent or scratch it a new battery will be needed. For any etron it will be around 50k cdn without installation. A cheap hyundai brand has 50 to 60k batteries for the hybrids. The warranty does not cover any type of damage and the insurance write off will raise your insurance by 50 to 100%.

I get about 245 miles of range on a full charge, but the car socks. I have the Chronos version, and the build quality is definitely subpar.

Of all the vehicles I heard you mention the Cadillac, Genesis and BMW are the only ones that seem to be in the luxury segment along with Audi. I don’t find the Ford or Tesla to be luxury vehicles. And should a Tesla be in any conversation where build quality is a strength?
The fact that the range is short and the rear seats don’t recline don’t scream luxury to me either doesn’t lend to luxury for me. I appreciate the review as I do all of your reviews but this is a miss for me.

Thing is the model y is now priced like a luxury car so its natural to compare with the rest of the luxury ones.
It just shows how much tesla car has gone up in price the last couple of years

1000 pounds heavier than the I-Pace. Yes, 1000 pounds!!! Part of the reason it’s range is stuck at low 200s.

I think it’s so dumb to base your choice on an EV vehicle as to whether it has a « Franck » or not… studies have shown that most EV drivers don’t use the frunk, and when they do, it’s to store the charging cables. So I really don’t understand the big deal about the frunk. Also, the fact that people are disappointed with a range of 220 miles, when again, most EV drivers don’t drive more than 60 miles round trip.
