The original tractor seats have stood the test of time
and they were made of metal
but the shape was right .

Stuart, what I find most refreshing about your channel is that you always follow up on your evaluations. You give an initial evaluation, but always, always follow up after using either a motorcycle, seat, foot pegs, handle bar extenders. This gives me, at least, an excellent evaluation over a longer period of time, and over various driving conditions and lengths of time. Keep up the great evaluations!

Wise words indeed regarding seat comfort. When I bought my Yamaha mt 03 I thought the standard seat would be awful on a long run as it’s about as thick as a playing card. But, as you quite rightly say, it’s more down to the shape than the padding which counts in the long term comfort stakes. I’m glad to say that I’ve had no comfort problems at all.

Hello Stuart, I found out many decades ago that motorcyclists don't like riding pillion, I'm the same myself, in fact the last time I rode pillion was in 1984, my mate took me on his Triumph T140V from Brighouse to Bradford to collect a Laverda 1200 that I'd just bought. Keep your videos coming Stu, I find them to be a breath of fresh air in these uncertain times we've found ourselves in.

My wife very much likes the bike as a passenger. She would like to try the back rest but only because she is now keen to come along. The bike is great two up but see my comments elsewhere regarding Hagon 2810 shocks as they make a huge difference.

Nahthen from Lincoln! Late to the party watching this video. But I found what you say about firmer seats absolutely fascinating. On my Triumph Bobber I swapped a soft padded Triumph custom seat out for a much firmer Alex Leather custom seat from Germany. The firmer seat was a massive improvement in looks, but after a couple of rides I thought I had made a huge mistake, it wasn't comfy. However I persevered, and now the seat, and my arse 😁 have broken in I am finding the firm seat really comfy both on short hops and 70 mile trips. I'm not swapping back, and quite frankly it's just great to hear you give reasons to what I have experienced. Great vid as always with something for everyone👍

Interesting. I changed the shocks to Hagon 2810 units and these are transformational in terms of comfort both commuting and on touring roads. My guess is the touring seat and the shocks would be a perfect combination. One word of caution would be only to go to the 25mm longer shocks if you need to as the exhaust clearance gets a bit tight and the side and center stand effectively become 25mm too short (a good compromise for me as 6 2” with long limbs but standard length ideal if you don’t need the extra leg room).

Great video Stu with plenty of useful advice and suggestions. As a previous sufferer of plantar fasciitis (Policeman's Heel) myself your advice for one's posterior comfort is just as relevant to that of one's feet. Too many everyday shoes these days, Chinese made mostly, do not come with instep support for the foot. Look inside most shoes and the surface of the inside sole is flat all the way down. Over time this leads to fallen arches of the foot and so the pain and onset of plantar fasciitis. Rest, exercise and medication help, but long term the most valuable preventative is the wearing of the shoe sole or half-sole inserts that have arch supports. These can be worn permanently, or can be worn when one first becomes aware of the return of the condition and give very quick relief in that they support the sole of the foot instep/arch and reduce the strain on the muscles in the soles of the feet. When buying shoes I now always check to see that if I intend to wear them for some time they have the inbuilt instep support. I hgope you are soon relieved of your issue and foot pain. This advice is to help prevent fellow sufferers and raise awareness that this modern corner cutting world cares less for our feet than the old, so seek out footwear that gives support and you will benefit long term. Stay safe all.

    • @SteveRobertsTheNurdler
      @SteveRobertsTheNurdler 2 роки тому +1

Definitely agree Raymond, I once suffered from this condition and a Podiatrist recommended an insert that gave Instep support, I wore those supports religiously for a year and have to say it’s cured me, like you, I’m disappointed with the footwear that is available for us to buy these days, most are very flat and can cause the condition to recur, I’ve taken to fitting silicone gel inserts in most of my shoes these days.

Nice one Stuart, just returned from a tour around Scotland on my Guzzi V7, unfortunately the weather differed from the rest of the UK ie torrential rain and high winds! Bloody awful, but it's also the first time on a tour where I had no numb bum, so apart from being battered by the weather it's a thumbs up to the standard Guzzi seat.....

Cheers for this Stu along with all your classic 350 and other bike posts.
Pick up my red classic chrome next week .
Touring wise im part exing from a foot forward Vulcan VN900 custom cruiser, so very different.
However in the 70s I toured on a Honda 50 ( 1500 miles) so im very adaptable
I hate foot boards as it forces your feet into a set position and thats why you see so many with highway pegs on the crash bars just to rest their ancles.
My Vulcan has pegs to let you change foot angle position.
I'll see how i get on with the standard pegs first bit suspect ill be fine.

Ah, what timing: I just watched your previous video on the new RE footpegs, and was going to ask how they are in terms of aiding or hindering shifting and braking, when *this* video suddenly pops up. It sounds like they work a treat for you so far, particularly in regard to your injury. Also agree about seat comfort...of my three bicycles, all have "hard" saddles, but the most-comfortable of the three has the best-known old-school leather saddle, a Brooks B17. I bought it close to a decade ago, and it took a good month's worth of riding for things to settle in, but once they did, the comfort level was amazing. The seat on my Vespa GTS is somewhat similar in that, while padded, it's not especially cushy which is a big deal when I'm on it for the better part of two hours straight.

Yes, the seat. That for me is still an issue on my classic 500. No matter what i did i allways suffered numbness in my manparts within about 15minutes. Switched to the touring seat, now it happens in 5 minutes. Once i went on a 400km trip and was paid in two days of numbness. Now i have an aircushion on the seat which makes it a bit better but i still haven’t found the ideal arangement. I do suffer from this on every single motorcycle or moped i own so it may very well have to do with my own anatomy.

  • @stevejeffcoat7672
    @stevejeffcoat7672 2 роки тому

I find that big contributary factors to seat comfort are rider mass, and the strength of the fabric your trousers are made of.
I weigh 130kg so on a soft seat I end up sitting on the seat pan in a very short space of time. The higher spring rate of the touring seat padding holds me suspended rather than "on the bump stop".
Strong jeans act as a form of corsetry, holding all the squidgy bits in place, which is much more conducive to long term comfort. Your trousers effectively become part of the suspension system.
I hear what you say about covering the rear brake pedal, but having my right foot splayed outwards is an absolute killer, and is the number one reason why I head for home after about 20 minutes in the saddle

I don't know if my info has much to offer but all motorcycle seats seem the same to me (been riding since 72) but I owned an 81 KZ 750-E2 and KZ 1000J, both those bikes are still I think are the most comfortable I've ever ridden on, I looked into it and they used a 3-density layered foam. I have always thought that on any M/C seat if they just tried that 3-layered construction, any seat could be very comfortable. I guess I am lucky that for the most part I'm good with most. But I do love the look of that brown custom seat style.

Got a demo rum on Royal Enfield 650 this Thursday. I been running a Honda CB 500f for the last 5 years . I had 250 miles when I brought it and now it's hitting 32,000 and I'm looking for new bike . I been on Royal Enfield 500 bullet years ago on holiday in Cornwall and loved it ( love the retro look ) . Now I'm very interested in the 650 . My bike is the only transport nd I would be using bike all year round ( in all weathers and temperatures , I'm not a polisher only come out in summer sunshine lol ). So I been watching video upon video about the 650 . It's a bit scary going from the solid reliability of the Honda to the Royal Enfield which is unknown to me . Buy the centre stand and easy accessible to get to parts of the bike without removing half the bike fairing and components is a bonus .

  • @MultiThunder1234

I think the biggest mistake I made when I started touring was going on long rides during a tour, I actually don't do this anymore so the box standards really do work for me, you won't get me on the bike for more then 3 hours straight before I make a stop for a good hour to just relax and soak in the surroundings. Obviously I do plan my stops so I don't make them on the highway. I feel this is definitely my way of touring as my body is happier, the bike is happier and I get to experience a lot more of my travels other than riding. I have done 2,000 kms in a little over 2 days before and it was hell, it took my body 2 days just to recover from the journey, so a lot not fun when you're pushing your body that far on what's supposed to be a holiday 😂.

Uncle stu, I have the touring seat + the deluxe foot pegs. I have two questions:
    1. I too subconsciously cover the right foot brake with my feet. That's the only way I can ride. More than half of my foot on the footrest and the front lightly rests on the brake. But I am always afraid whether I am engaging the brake or not. But I think, if I don't depress the brake completely, the brake shouldn't engage. What do you think, is lightly rest your toes on the brake okay?
    2. Regarding the touring seat, I agree 100% that it's not completely comfortable in heavy traffic but it's manageable. I am not very handy to swap seats often so I just keep the touring seats on. However, after riding more than 150 kms, I feel lot of strain on my thighs and calf muscles as if it was hung and stretched out. Plus I have a strange situation, I am super comfortable initially but the moment I stop at a traffic signal, dislodge a bit to keep my foot down and then start riding again, that initial comfort just disappears and its never the same again. I don't know why it always happens. No matter how much I try to readjust my self on the seat again.. I feel unsatisfied. Please could you throw some light on what could be the issue?
I cannot comment on the rear seat since I removed it completely. I am riding a single seater Royal enfield classic 350 and it looks fantastic!!

Hi Stuart, you mentioned the suitability of the foot pegs for pillion usage, They do quote them on the RE website as suitable for both rider and pillion, but how that works I don' t know. the pillion pegs are not sprung, and are held either in the up, or down position with a ball bearing and spring. I wonder if you noticed a hole in the new pegs that would accommodate the coil spring? ( iv'e removed my pillion pegs completely, along with the rear seat) Lovely scenery by the way!

I saw your foot position in the last video and wondered if one of your legs is (significantly) longer than the other. I have this problem with my left leg being nearly and inch longer than my right. 😮 So the position of my feet on the pegs is not the same left to right. It's also one of the reasons I have a bad back (something you've mentioned). I could, I suppose, put a peg lowering kit on the left but I just live with the fact that my feet are in different positions and at different angles when on the bike. Ball of the foot on the right peg, foot angled down on the left (remembering to adjust the foot position for left hand corners).
An ex-copper admitting to having big feet - One for the books 😂😂

I recently bought the Chrome (Mark 2) Interceptor and I'm really worried about the maintenance of the chrome finish. So, I was thinking of applying the PPF Coating on the tank to protect it. Do you recommend applying the PPF (Paint Protection Film) to the tank or regular maintenance like waxing would do the job?

So far I have not ridden more than 80 miles in a single ride and find the normal seat ok. The larger foot pegs I find are better for resting the feet on, they don't tend to tense up so much. You will find the 300 mile service will free up the bike somewhat just like with the Classic 500, by 1000 miles the engine is really coming together. It's only on hills the smaller engine shows it self as having less power than the 500.

Hi Stuart I have exactly the same colour classic as you, been thinking about a brown touring seat for a while if I use my Classic for work its a round trip of just over 90miles just over an hour either way so I think Ill be investing. On a slightly different note I have over a thousand miles on mine and my speedo has given up! When I spoke to my very helpful local dealers in Chelmsford it seems that Im the sixth person with this issue, is this something you or your subscribers have any experience of?

Clean the wiring connectors in the headlight assembly with electric contact cleaner
Let it dry reconnect them and reconnect the battery cable
