Oak to answer your question at the end, metal benders don't bend the metal itself then bend the tiny bits of rock or "earth" in the metal, that's why a lot of the metal clan has metal pieces accessible on their clothing, this is also why in universe they can't bend platinum because it's been refined and there's no bits or earth left
Knowing the backstory it is so staggering and obvious how much Su uses white lies and hypocrisy to make Lin look like the "bad, moody one" and herself as the "nice one who did do no wrongs and just wants everyone to get along". She could've easily told Korra that she hurt Lin when they were young and Lin has found it hard to forgive her. Su is not being kind in the way she chooses her words at all. She's a bit of a narcissist tbh
Yes! She had a lot of audacity to think that because it’s been over 30 years that Lin should’ve forgiven and forgotten about something that she’s probably been reminded of every single time she looks in a mirror. “We talked it out without you, why are you still mad?”
@@Theus227 Suyin faced zero consequences for what she did and basically got rewarded for being a f**k up. In Su's mind it's like: I did a whole bunch of f'd up stuff in the past but if enough time passes it'll be like it never happened, so no apology, or responsibility needed. 👌 I hate Su.
I think it's really interesting to see Kya fight. If you pay attention she uses a lot of air bender styles in her water bending. She surrounds herself with a ring of water like Tenzin does with air. Really interesting to see the detail they put in there in the different styles. Makes me feel like even though she was a water bender Aang spent time teaching her his way too.
Imo air bending should be the strongest, there's air in blood and water and fire needs it as fuel. In theory air bends should be able to blood bend, turn a water benders water into just straight hydrogen and snuff out a fire benders flames. But the air bending moves are pretty similar to water bending so it makes sense that ang would incorporate into his daughter's leasons
@@kingjellybean9795 air is only 21% oxygen, its more likely air benders are moving the nitrogen (78%) in the atmosphere, which if thats the case then a scientifically minded air bender could also bend plants as thats the next most common source of nitrogen in nature
43:06 Well she was instructing Korra to feel for/focus on the earth particles within the metal, that’s how they’re able to bend metal... by focusing on the earth particles within it. Which is what we saw Toph do in ATLA when she first metal bent. (So it’s not looking for metal particles within the earth but looking for earth particles within the metal.)
Zaheer had a long time to plan how he would free his friends. Getting airbending was an unexpected bonus. Zaheer knew he could probably free Ghazan, and he knew he would need Ghazan in order to free Ming Hua, and he knew he would need Ghazan and Ming Hua in order to free P’Li (said more like ‘plee’ with the ‘p’ sound sort of separate first).
Lyn's situation with her family always makes me cry. Su still owns her a legit apology. I cut off my narcissistic abuser relative which cause whole family to jump me like rabid dogs which resulted in us getting estranged. The way they explain my choices are completely dishonest, incomplete and full of denial so I always look like the bad person. The black sheep. And it often is this way for many many people in these types of situations. Sure, you could try and forgive your relatives but if they're still in denial about the core issue and don't change then the cycle of abuse just repeats itself.
42:59 No, because they’re not technically bending the metal, they’re bending the earth particles within the metal. That’s why platinum can’t be bent, because it’s too pure. When we saw Toph invent metalbending we saw her actually sensing the earth particles. Moving those particles forces the metal to move as well.
I'm 100% on Lin's side in the fight between her & her sister. To have Toph not only be a cop but a corrupt cop really sucked & I can imagine it felt terrible for Lin's mom to force her into corruption when she was still relatively new to the force.
Yeah. Toph was a terrible mother....no debate. Because she was never good with feelings and family stuff. Since she didn't get any freedom...she gave every bit of freedom to her children to the point where it's not good. And when Lin try to followed her mother's mature side, Su followed the Heist Toph's path. They clashed and instead of owning up to it, Su puts her mother in a position where she had to throw her career away. But at least they worked things out
So you think it was alright for Toph to steal and join an underground fight club when she was a child and not face consequences but Su should have gone to prison for driving a getaway car?
i dont think Lin wanted or really needs kids, shes a great character precisely because she doesnt rely on a love interest or children to develop just the relations between her and her mother/sister
You all would love demon slayer there are 3 seasons and it's filled with some of the best animation and fights comparable to avatar the last Airbender just a lot more blood and violence lol. you can also watch every episode in English
This is great to hear! Both shows are great for those newer to anime and other animation! Castlevania might be another one they’d get into, I think they would have great insights about the dynamics in that show.
Lin being one of the two most compelling characters i love that they give her some development. The dynapic between Lin, Su and Toph gives me parentification vibes. Never stated or label obviously. Parentification is a much more subtle and less stigmatized form of child abuse. People understand why hitting your children is wrong, emotional abuse is being more understood. Parentification is i supose a specific tupe of emotional abuse. This is why Su and Toph struggle to make amends with Lin over the years and currently in the show. Su struggles to understand the exact nature of Lin’s childhood trama. How their experiences while similar are fundamentally different. It is hard for Su to empathize. I am not sure what i said just made any sense. Does any one agree or disagree?
I honestly think Su just doesn't care if she's wrong. She was very self centered as a child and expected other people to just accept whatever she did, and she's like that as an adult too. Su's idea of making up with Lin was to tell her to just get over it, and then act like Lin's being unreasonable when she doesn't.
Wow OP, now I understand why I like Lin so much. On the surface it's easy not to realize how much I relate to her (we're MEGA different) but once I'm considering the parentification angle, it all makes sense 😂 She and I handle that particular trauma quite differently but yeah I 100% agree with your take about her
Hey, I just wanted to mention that, while I don't think Lin Beifong (Toph's oldest daughter) should have yelled at her niece (Opal), what Korra said to her was much worse and over the line. And I actually understand why Lin is angry at her sister, yes it has been a long time and they both should work it out, but Suyin (Lin's sister) scarred her, and their mom let that happen. That is hard to forgive. I do understand Toph didn't want to put her daughter in jail, but in protecting Suyin, she didn't protect Lin. And I know Korra didn't know this when she talked to Lin that way, but that's no excuse. She shouldn't have said that to her, whether she knew about what happened to Lin or not. I know this is a kid's show, but the stories have a lot of depth, don't they?
The way I always read that scene, Lin snapped at Opal because Opal had that speech about being a happy family (i.e. for Lin to forgive Su) even though Su had done nothing to earn forgiveness. It's the same manipulation Su's always used on Lin, except now she's sent in a sweet, innocent girl to make Lin look like the unreasonable one again. Maybe Lin actually thought Su put her up to that, or maybe it just hit a raw nerve so Lin is taking out her anger on Opal. We never find out, but either way I think it makes perfect sense in the context of Lin and Su's relationship. Was it right? No, but that's not quite the point of the scene IMO. Or maybe it is, because it helps show Lin is upset enough to kick puppies.
I feel the need to mention this because Quinn brought it up twice. But Amon, from the first season, he is dead. He doesn’t ever show up again, outside of a flashback sort of scene. Let’s just put that to bed right now.
Fun Fan Theory-You find out who Lin's father is in Season 4, nothing is ever mentioned about Suyin's. A fan theory is that Sokka is Suyin's father. Her skin tone is almost an exact match for Sokka's, contrasting Toph and Lin's very fair complexion (given that this is animation, it was definitely a conscious choice). Many of the character's, and her family's, dress and styles are nods to Sokka-Suyin's ever-present forearm coverings, her and her daughter keeping their hair style very short, her son having a partial side-shave hairstyle, two of her son's have a VERY similar face shape to young and adult Sokka (again, animation choice). Her mannerisms and personality also reflect Sokka's optimism and promoting creativity and activities other than sole bending-her son's art, her twins' game invention, her son and husband's architecture, and her dance choreography. However, she is also very absolute in her battle strategy planning and views on good/evil, similarly to Sokka. She also shares Sokka's interest in meteorites, having a collection of her own. It has also been pointed out that Suyin's bending is a lot more fluid, almost water-bending like, than her mom and sister's hard-stance style bending. And just for fun, they both have 5 letter names that start with S...because why not.
@@chainsawboy2388 I think it's canon (from the comics) that Sokka and Suki didn't work out, though. IMO they both got done dirty after TLA but life do be like that sometimes...
Interesting how none of them noticed or talked about that one female metal clan guard... That's okay though, she's definitely not going to be that important anyway...
Woop perfect timing for me. I agree with such formidable enemies its much more daunting with Tenzin leaving. Also, mention of Chief Sokka! Just warms my heart knowing he became chief of the Southern Water Tribe. Lin is a very complex and intense individual. She always presented the tough chief of police, we rarely saw her more gentle side. Seeing her tear up at the end of episode 5 was powerful. And yep Lin is the older sibling. Episode 6 with all the backstory stuff and seeing Korra learn metal bending was awesome. I am happy they worked it out in the end. Lin just inherited Toph's stubborness to the extreme. It took a lot for her to heal past the old pain so the handshake was good! It may not be the hug we want, but for Lin its a positive step.
Gosh su is so annoying. They managed to show how forgiveness should be worked towards in atla with zuko, you must earn trust back and not expect them to automatically forgive. Yet here su just blames lin for not forgiving her and only tells half truths to korra that make her look better. She shows that she doesn't take responsibility even now, when she attacked lin back in her vulnerable state and even baited her with that tenzin comment! Spoiler She also shows she hasn't changed in literally the next couple of episodes.
i've said it before and i'll say it again, we love varrick in this house. he is our tony stark with a extra side of smarmy asshole but he's adorable and funny af.
Metal benders aren’t so much bending metal as they are bending earth impurities in the metal, which moves the metal with it. That is why no metal bender can bend platinum- it is considered pure metal.
Actually metal bending just like blood bending only bends the main elements. Metals are impure forms, meaning there are disperse amount of earth in metals that's why they can bend it. Meaning they can't bend pure metals like platinum since it has no element of earth in it. Just like bloodbending where they only bend the water within a person's body and not the actual blood. As human blood is almost 55 percent plasma that is 90% water.
Hey, I just wanted to hop on here and say that I hope you guys have an awesome holiday, and a great new year. So thankful I found you guys. You guys have made my year better, and I just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you guys put into all your content. 🎄🎄🎄
Answering Oak’s question about metalbending and pulling metal out of the earth - metalbenders actually use small bits of earth within unrefined metal to bend it (they can’t bend pure metal like platinum) so they wouldn’t be able to “pull metal” out of earth since they are actually using the small particles of earth within metal to bend it. But if there is metal around that is not purified metal, they would be able to bend it no matter where it’s from around them.
This is what Hiroshi Sato did in Season 1 to combat metalbenders is all his machines and robots were built out of platinum so metalbenders could not simply bend his machines to defend themselves or escape a platinum prison.
I can't say I'm a huge fan of settling a decades long sibling grudge in a single episode. I know they're side characters, but gradual progress in sorting things out feels more realistic and tends to have a more satisfying payoff. In any case, I'm looking forward to the next batch of episodes.
Gazan is an Earth bender. I always suspected Gazan had one firebender and one Earth bending parent so a combination of both is lava bending. From Korra book 1 we know bending is bioligy that is how Amon was using his blood bending to block to take away peoples bending From book 2-3 we know bebding is also part spirit The new airbenders are probably deescendants of people from the air nation but the gene for airbending was too weak to manifest Harmonic convergenge boosted the latent genes to allow some to manifest

if there happened to be metal nearby in the earth and they could sense it was there, doesn't seem to be any reason they couldn't bend it out of the ground, but generally metal benders just carry metal with them the way Katara carried her water, or if they do happen to be in an area with a bunch of refined metal readily available then they'll pull from that too. I think if a metal bender was like out in the wilderness and needed to fight and didn't have any metal on them they would probably just default to earthbending.
actually they cant bend pure metals. it was mentioned, if i remember correctly, in season 1 when an enemy imprisoned beifong and why beifong cant bend the mech asami's dad was using because they are made of pure metal. metal benders are still bending the earth in metals that's why they can't bend pure metals as there are no earth mixed in them.
if you guys wanted to continue watching old 2000s-2010s cartoons i’d love to see you watch one called W.I.T.C.H.! the five main characters are all girls so i’m not sure if a group of grown men would be that interested 😅 but it has elemental powers similar to avatar the last airbender & legend of korra!! it has a really interesting story over 2 seasons and it wouldn’t cause any copyright issues for you as it’s all available on youtube!
The lava bender is not a fire bender he is an earth bender Earth can do lava and metal Fire can do combustion and lighting Air is air Water can do ice and blood
Amon is dead💀he does not show up any time after the show, or in the comics to my knowledge. They just didn't want to show it, because it is still a "kids" show

She could've easily told Korra that she hurt Lin when they were young and Lin has found it hard to forgive her. Su is not being kind in the way she chooses her words at all. She's a bit of a narcissist tbh
Big facts, she's kind of insufferable to me personally. Like you're a whole adult ma'am, take some responsibility
She really is and never actually apologizes or take responsibility for what she put Lin thru
I'd argue that carries over into s4, which .ages the conflict there even more nuanced cause her flaws help mask what she's opposing
Aww! I do think Aang taught his children his style of bending.
I mean Aang is also a waterbender, so him teaching Kya a mixture makes sense
It's always so confusing to me when reactors see Lin as jealous of Su, I didn't see it that way at all
Think the way lin acts towards opal is unacceptable so u get why people immediately assume shes the bad guy in this
@@MadeByIsmael I get that completely, and her behavior towards Su's family is inexcusable, it just never came off as jealousy to me.
I frigging love this book so much. The Red Lotus is by far my most favourite antagonistic organisation in the whole series.
Zaheer shaving his head is more about now being an airbender rather than an attempt at disguise.
And people say Toph being a cop goes against her character in AtLA. Are Avatar fans becoming DBZ fans and not watching the show anymore?
@@silentassasonexactly! children become adults. Responsibility sets in and we become different people.
@@silkyhank Toph should have faced consequences for the stealing but not for the fight club.
i dont think Lin wanted or really needs kids, shes a great character precisely because she doesnt rely on a love interest or children to develop just the relations between her and her mother/sister
22:32 this scene right here, 16 year old me really said "I need me some Opal"

@@BaddMedicine awesome I'm sure you guys will like AOT as well it has a really good story
Dude yes. Just watched season 3 lol. I think they would love Demon Slayer
@@xackwerley9184 season 4 is going to be crazy
On the surface it's easy not to realize how much I relate to her (we're MEGA different) but once I'm considering the parentification angle, it all makes sense 😂 She and I handle that particular trauma quite differently but yeah I 100% agree with your take about her
Zuko is pushing 90 what did y’all expect he’s not in fighting shape anymore
I'm on Lin's side. Suyin was in the wrong and never apologized for it.
The fact Su left out so much info and yet Lin is still made out to be the one in the wrong peeves me so much! Suyin SUCKS
Watching Kya fight is always a treat. imo she's (one of) the most underrated and underused characters from the new roster.
Guys, lava is not fire, it's earth. Science.
Imagine Oak and Answer cosplay as Zaheer and adult Aang respectively
Yes.
I feel the need to mention this because Quinn brought it up twice. But Amon, from the first season, he is dead. He doesn’t ever show up again, outside of a flashback sort of scene. Let’s just put that to bed right now.
Lin got the same overnight transformation as Zuko
I don’t like that theory cause it means Sokka and Suki didn’t work out :(
@@chainsawboy2388 Or Suki could have died, I think I've seen people say things like that, but I don't know as much about the Gaangs adult lives
Gazon isn’t a fire bender, he is an earth bender
This is late but the movie Mason was thinking about when the guy was lava bending is “Krull”
In Lin's defense she was right: Dustin just hid herself for so long that basically didn't do much to contac her or make amends
Spoiler
She also shows she hasn't changed in literally the next couple of episodes.
Or s4 tbh. Her flaws really doesn't help the conflict there
i've said it before and i'll say it again, we love varrick in this house. he is our tony stark with a extra side of smarmy asshole but he's adorable and funny af.
There's a fan theory that Sokka is Suyin's father. I believe this 100%
“As long as the queen stays out of everybody’s business, we won’t have a problem.”
Uhhh…
Lol. 😅😬
"Clearly that's what got to her" lol
Metal benders aren’t so much bending metal as they are bending earth impurities in the metal, which moves the metal with it. That is why no metal bender can bend platinum- it is considered pure metal.
Guys there is no way that is Zaheer. To change his look that much he would have to be some sort of shapeshifter or something.
Thanks for the laugh. Maybe they'll think Zaheers girlfriend is Azula
I can hear spartan screaming somewhere
Lmaooo you guys are funny
I think the line the answer was trying to quote is "THATS MY GIRLFRIEND YOU NUMPTIES!"
16:25 WHY DID YOU NOT REALISE THIS WAS ZAHEER??? Just because he shaved?!??? 😂😂 YOU GUYS OH MY GOD

Zaheer overheard their convo about Korra being with the Metal Clan, while he was at the Air Temple.
I won't spoil the truth in case any new viewers see this comment, but in case you're misremembering, fyi OP that's not correct
From Korra book 1 we know bending is bioligy that is how Amon was using his blood bending to block to take away peoples bending
From book 2-3 we know bebding is also part spirit
The new airbenders are probably deescendants of people from the air nation but the gene for airbending was too weak to manifest Harmonic convergenge boosted the latent genes to allow some to manifest
Didn’t hear anyone mention that Toph’s voice actress is the one who does young Su’s voice!

I cannot wait for your reaction to the best show ever & till then I'm super hyped for everything else you guys are doing. THANK YOU!
if there happened to be metal nearby in the earth and they could sense it was there, doesn't seem to be any reason they couldn't bend it out of the ground, but generally metal benders just carry metal with them the way Katara carried her water, or if they do happen to be in an area with a bunch of refined metal readily available then they'll pull from that too.
