Piandao is considered the greatest swordsman in Fire Nation history. He was the son to two firebending masters, but is not a firebender himself. Part of why he sympathizes with Sokka.
Aang’s weird armor was apparently an in-joke by the creators. Toy companies tried to get them to do things like that on the show so they could make action figures based on them

This is one of my favorite episodes. You really get to see why Sokka's character exists and how lost the rest of them are without him. He's a natural fighter, leader, tactician, and planner.
yeah, sokka tends to gets cast aside as the comic relief from the start, and you kind of feel that way even as a viewer a lot of the time. This episode really solidifies his importance in the show. and when you go back and watch this show for a second time (i've probably watched it 4 times now) you have that in your head and really see how sokka is important from the start.
I love how this show addresses that there's different kinds of strength. Sokka is, by far, the least combat-capable of the Gaang, but the group would not be able to function without him.
It's wonderful seeing how Sokka has grown. When he was at Kyoshi Island he told the girls that he was the best warrior in his village and he could teach them. In this episode he tells Piandao that he's been all over the world and doesn't know if he's worthy because he has a lot to learn.
Piandao is voiced by Robert Patrick. His line about a sword being an extension of the arm is a reference to Patrick's most famous film role: The T-1000 in T2: Judgement Day.
Many Fire Nation sets were inspired by real locations in Iceland. In fact, co-creator Bryan Konietzko traveled to Iceland to scout environments. The waterfall was designed after the real life Gullfoss Waterfall.
That would make a lot of sense, especially if Iroh brought him on as his tutor. Plus it's funny that the master tells Sokka to use "Li" as a cover name, when it's the same name Zuko takes on in the Earth Kingdom.
@@nathancollins1715 SPOILERS yeah, I totally see Iroh doing that. He gifted Zuko the knife from Ba Sing Se, so he probably knew Zuko liked blades and was somewhat talented with them. He's choosing Iroh by literally holding the skill that Iroh (presumably) introduced him to in his hands in front of Ozai. That's also another difference between Ozai and Iroh. Ozai 100% thinks fire bending is everything and you're a failure if you're not perfect at it while Iroh probably thought "there's more to life and fighting than fire bending" and instead looked at what Zuko had going for himself and found something more suited to his talents. Zuko really is right when he said Iroh was his true father.
Well in the comics I think the search there was a flashback into Zukos childhood and it showed that Zuko was not only untalented at firebending but also didnt have what Ozai calls the spark for great potential at it what made him a late bloomer to even have the ability to firebent, so Ozai thought about killing Zuko but one of the fire sages thought Zuko could still be a usefull soldier and Zukos mother Ursa defenetly didnt wanted that Zuko died so they convinced Ozai to let Zuko be trained by Pian Dao so its not Iroh but Ursa Zuko is choosing with his choice weapon and then Iroh with his choice of believes and words. @@Krustenkaese92
@@Krustenkaese92 That's also a great point. I think the fact that Ozai being effectively defenseless against Zuko in that moment speaks volumes about his character. If Zuko hadn't been so merciful, Ozai would've been toast. And it nicely sets up Aang taking away Ozai's power by taking his bending. Without his birthright, he's nothing. Completely helpless.
Sokka is like the non-bending Avatar. Water: Comes from the tribe and knows how to fight like he's from there. Earth: Learned how to fight from the Kyoshi Warriors Fire: Learns how to fight from a Fire Nation sword master. Air: This one is a little iffy. I can only hope he picked up on some things Aang does.

When I watched this episode upon my first rewatch, it was instantly top 5. I really enjoyed the respect it gave Sokka without changing his character and how it allowed him to shine. I think this episode also works as a great foundation for the amazing Sokka moments to come.
When the guard antagonizing Iroh said "look what you've become." It was one of the greatest moments of subtly in the show. He thought Iroh was a slob, weak, etc. Then you see Iroh's transformation.
I love Sokka and this episode so much! This episode is one of the ones that just highlights how important Sokka is not only to the group but the story as a whole. 💛
This was such a great episode. The first time I've seen was a point in my life that I needed direction as well. It's strange how some people think, and act form out of this world. How unique one person is, and realizes it, shows how someone can move forward in one's life. How knew must learn to be detached, and improve oneself before him or her can help the ones around them.

Sokka has a strategic mind that kids would kill for. He's also been in hard situations and keeps a level head. Hell the guy figured out a major weakness of firebenders. Who needs bending when you could have a strategic mind like his. Plus not many people are proficient in using a jian sword. 4:45 movements like pian Dao takes time and patience to learn.
Your comment that Sokka's "a really good planner" is, I think, precisely why he's feeling so down on himself in this episode in particular. He thought that that was what he could contribute to the team, but after the events of the last episode, he's struggling with the fact that his master timeline got ruined and the realization that they don't actually need to plan out every moment until the invasion.
0:25 Don't even get me started on space X and their low altitude satellites. I already thought there was too much space debris, we're only making it worse. But when I was working graveyard shift I saw so many shooting stars night after night I thought "If I had a dollar for each shooting star I saw I'd be as rich as I was wishing" I learned that most shooting stars are things thrown out by the international space station burning up in the atmosphere.
