Mercury made beautifull outboards in the 50's and 60's.

I wanted a KG-7 for a cheap round nose hydroplane when I was 12-13. The kid I bought it from had it mounted on an eight foot alum pram. The spark and throttle worked independantly for some reason. Neither of us kids weighed close to 100 lbs and he told me to lean forward and hang over the front. On my demo ride he started it and slowly pushed the spark lever all the way and the power surged, still without him messing with the carb butterfly which was not a full butterfly but a partial. I actually thought we were wide open and was already impressed at the speed, then he opened the thottle all the way! Everything was a blur as we screamed down the river! I guess my "speed" bar wasn't set that high at the time, A 7 1/2 Evinrude on an old heavy wooden boat. For the kids my age back in the fifties the Mercury Super 10 had an almost supernatural aura around it for some reason!

I have a 10hp Hurricane, I had it on a rowboat and it just hauled ass. Now I'm thinking about getting a hydroplane to put it on.

I loved the one i had for racing a whole lot of years ago. I never could get it to idle without readjust the carb which in turn changed the full open performance. I turned redcoat, lol, and got an Evenrude for fishing and (trolling) It did burn more fuel than the Merc. I run a V8 outboard Merc on my bass boat now. Not for the weak! ;-)
Thank you for sharing this rebuild and restoration. I have a dozen oldies including a 10hp Martin, 33hp Scott Atwater, a 5hp Firestone, (3 Evenrudes 10hp, 9.5hp, & 35hp) are among them. Enjoy your time on the water..

I ran a ke4 on an 8ft hydroplane as a kid. Always wanted a bigger motor and 20 years later with both gone I just picked up a decent KE7 finally. Resealed the lower unit and has a phelon ignition conversion. Runs like a top such a sharp motor! Found a kf7 too trying to find a a KG7 so I can have all 3 variants 🎉

I went to a local marine dealership.
Asked for help with a old out board motor. He said the scrap pile is over to your right. I said screw you. You will never get my money.
I learned how to repair it myself.
Marine Engine has the parts & repair manual to do it yourself.

Alot of people lose interest in old iron because they can't repair them can't find parts. Can't find anyone to repair it for them.
I found Marine Engine as a reliable parts source. I thank them every time they help me..

That’s is awesome to see that motor and what it does on the water. I have the exact same motor that I restored as well but I don’t have the lower unit for it - been looking for one but hard to find.

Hey Everyone, I have one of these its a 51 Super 10. The motor has the Bendix Scintilla ignition. I am having a terrible time getting the timing set and getting started. If anyone could help I'd appreciate it. Red Dirt OB on FB. Has anyone used a timing wheel to set these up for proper timing? I found 2 new OE coils and replaced with new points and condensers.

I hope you saved the old parts. I've had new points that needed to be filed right away, and condensers that were bad out of the box.

they were only fast because Mercury always under rated there motors so you think they faster then there rated Hp That motor is closer to 12 or 13 hp

Curious, are old ones nosier than their current counter parts?
