That’s a keeper
Nice motor! Good work.
Speed is much higher than I would have thought!
Uhm
That is the prettiest outboard engine ive ever seen . Love it .
Did you get the Mercury ring chromed or just buffed it up
Simply stunning. ❤
God- we had almost the identical boat back in the day! Just breath taking!!! Well done!!
Fun lugging around, 3-10. Cool factor, 12-10. 😁
Does that have a 15" shaft or 20" shaft? Love the sound and look! Such a cool engine!
My dad had the same merc. He gave it to me and it would pull away from 20s in Canada. I remember the tiller handle unscrewed and was a screwdriver. And the head had 2 blind tapped holes for spare plugs!
I went to a local marine dealership. Asked for help with a old out board motor. He said the scrap pile is over to your right. I said screw you. You will never get my money. I learned how to repair it myself. Marine Engine has the parts & repair manual to do it yourself.
Alot of people lose interest in old iron because they can't repair them can't find parts. Can't find anyone to repair it for them. I found Marine Engine as a reliable parts source. I thank them every time they help me..
what a beautiful example....
How big is the boat it's on ?
Now I know why they put lockouts for starting in gear,LMAO...Nice motors...
That is the coolest motor. Wow.
We had one of these when I was a kid. Ir didn't run very long and was always in the shop. Seeing this video gives me probably the longest observation I've had of one in action ! lol Thanks for posting this.
I found Brand New Coils for these. Standard Magneto Sales in Wood Dale Illinois has new aftermarket Bendix Scintilla coils and they are an exact fit 💯
Beautiful outboard 👍
Looked like you were hauling azz for 10hp. It also looked like you started in gear.
It’s always in gear
What a shame, never do this. That motor is seizing up so sad.
I have learned not to run it so long out of water. However, no damage was done and the motor is a good runner.
What a beautiful old moter unreal
Is the boat an Alumacraft 14'. That motor looks like it pushes it into the mid-20s.
Love the no mask, breathe in the asbestos technique...
Very smart way of doing that. Thanks!
It looks a little easier than I thought it would be- going to attempt to do it in a condo that I just bought, thanks for the video!
Thinking about this further, was this motor Phelon to start with? I see in a comment here that you now use OMC coils
I'm interested in the Phelon conversion. I have need of converting an Oliver made Wizard to something else that I seem to find more of. That motor sounds great!
That thing is a beast! Plenty of low end, plug impressive top end
Great stuff, thanks for sharing!
Great to see these old motors being saved! I have the exact same motor that my father bought new from Western Auto along with a 12 ft. Alumacraft back in 1957. Was always his favorite fishing package and often out performed larger and newer motors. It hasn't run for probably 20 years but, is in good overall condition. Suffers from the usual ignition issues and probably carb too. I know with a little work and the right parts...I can get her going again which brings me to the following questions. I know most origonal parts are no longer available but you obviously have a passion and knowledge to hopefully help me restore it to running condition. Pretty sure it had failing coils which my father had already doctored in the past so...what OMC coils did you use and were the modifications simple? points and condenser replacements? Carb replacement kit? Anything you can offer will be a big help and greatly appreciated. On another note...I the last 2 years I have reserected my fathers 66 Bultaco Campera (off the road since 74 and in several pieces...had some help from a diehard Bultaco guy with connections) and 71 Honda CT90 (last run 20 years ago)
I used OMC coils from the 1955 era and had to customize the stater plate to accommodate the sparkplug wire. Clean the points. Replace the condensers.
Thanks for the technical help...An update on the 57 Wizard Super 10 WM7. Replaced the coils with the OMC conversion you suggested...new plugs and wires...new condensers...new diaphragm fuel pump kit...new carb. kit...new lower unit seal and water pump impeller...still need to replace the drive shaft seal above the gear case but, lower unit does not wan't to come off. Unless i am missing a step, looks like it should simply slide out of the power head splines. Starts good and seems to run pretty well except. does not want to idle down at slow and always did back in the day. I would greatly appreciate any advise on these two issues before i go any further. Hoping to return my father's old favorite back to occasional use on his 57 Alumacraft. Thanks again, Larry A special shout out to Joe Ferguson ( www.fergusonpoolemarine.com ) in Georgia. He is a great guy ...great conversations and knowledge and was a pleasure to work.
Had one of those briefly, was a ripper. Did the ignition, water pump and usual. Got $500 for it at an aomci meet.
Hello...You can read my story in the above post...I am searching for ignition and carburetor components for my 57 Wizard / Super 10 model WM7. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Larry
Sweet
I think I might have been nice to see a view of the boat and motor moving across the water. Giving the viewing an idea of the 'speed'!
The Elgin is elegant. A small port 2 cycle that runs as smooth and clean as some 4 cycles. Most 2 cycles are hobby junk.
I ran a ke4 on an 8ft hydroplane as a kid. Always wanted a bigger motor and 20 years later with both gone I just picked up a decent KE7 finally. Resealed the lower unit and has a phelon ignition conversion. Runs like a top such a sharp motor! Found a kf7 too trying to find a a KG7 so I can have all 3 variants 🎉
Savage!
Anyone got one for sale?
My dad had one in the 50s Had a slide shift in front Throttle was in the Handel. Hard start but really fsst
what a sound! Hurricane engine with no fuel pump... sweet!
I had one just like that. Nothing but fast. Would do 30mph on a 14 ft alum craft row boat
I had one when I was a kid. I had a lot of fun with that motor.
old boat motors are just fun
🥰👍👍😁
🥰👍👍
not necessary to do a horrific bodge like that, just make a hole in the tabs then wire or cable tie the release cable into place
I found a Challenger today at a garage sale. Chris Craft produced outboards from 1949-1953. The outboard factory was purchased by the Oliver tractor company in late 53. They started producing their own motors in 54.
It is a 1963 model or it has a '63 cover on it. The 1962s had outlined block letters and no Evinrude logo on the rear of the sides.
Hello my name is John. I know this is an older post but I have a couple questions for you on this engine, which plug wires go where and what are the initial settings on the low-speed and high-speed carburetor screws? I cannot find anything on the internet!
Usually, the top plug wire is marked near the boot. The high speed and low speed are 1 full turn to 1.5 turns.
