One thing that's helpful for me to get my workouts in is to think of my workout as "me time!" This helps me fight off the urge to skip the workout. Mindset is 99% of the workout!

You are absolutely correct about mindset being the most of the workout. I go running on a mountain during November and December in northeast Pennsylvania. And if I'm not motivated, I sometimes struggle with my runs. But when I am motivated I can run the mountain pretty easily

I've been on the 5AM workout schedule since October. I fell off the wagon back in 2021 when my first daughter was born. I started to get back into a routine in 2022. Then I fell off the wagon again earlier this year when my second daughter was born in April. I realized I needed to workout before everyone else was awake in the house so that I could still take care of myself and also be there for my family when I got home from work. So far it's been going great and it made me realize that working out consistently means I feel better than when I am not. So my peak health (mentally and physically) while not exercising can't even hit my baseline when I'm on a regular schedule. I have to start taking the kids to day care in January so I'll probably hit a few bumps adjusting to the new schedule but I'm determined to make any changes necessary to keep a consistent schedule.

Former Army. I hated morning PT. The only thing I do these days is taking a walk before breakfast. When it comes to lifting and cardio, way more productive either afternoon or evening. In a way, hitting the gym after work is a de-stresser so I can take my frustration and anger out on the weights before going home.

    • @RidleyJones
      @RidleyJones 4 місяці тому +1

Afternoon and evening gang for life as well. I genuinely feel sick and awful and so weak if I try to work out before I've been awake for several hours. If I could only exercise in the morning, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do it at all.

I remember working out at 1AM in high school at my local 24 hour fitness, and coming out around 2:00-2:300AM to see some fellow classmates getting sloshed and hammered in the parking lot. Over a decade later and I can still remember how good it felt to be walking out of a great gym session versus walking into a hangover.

Due to my work schedule I usually wake up around 3am and have to be at work by 5:30am. The start of that early routine was tough to get into but after doing it for more than a year, it just feels off when I don't work out. My stress levels during the day are minimal and the early morning work out primes me for the rest of the day going forward.

Waiting for that fourth edition of the 12 week plan!! I think I’ve ran through the third edition about three times over the past 5 years. I wrote every workout (e.g., P1D1, P1D2, etc) on its own 3x3 sticky note folded in half. I would pull the stack out from my backpack, un-clip the one for that day, and then just use it as my guide. You guys helped me take ownership of my health, my schedule, and transform my body. Thank you so much. I’ll support you all the way!

I work out at 4am almost every day for years now and it's the best!!! After work I'm too tired or stressed. It sets me up for a positive, ambitious outlook and leaves my evening open for impromptu things I may want to do. I don't have to choose between. The downside is going to bed early. Best of all...the gains are great because morning is when I am the most refreshed and ready to workout.

I've experimented with different workout times myself, and I definitely concur that working out in the morning is extremely beneficial mentally.
However, I don't think it's as beneficial physically. Personally, I find I warm up slower in the morning, and I'm a little bit weaker. I also don't get as good a pump as I do with 2-3 meals in me.
So it's a trade-off. There's advantages and disadvantages to any time of the day you choose to work out.
The most inportant thing, I find, is keeping workout times consistent i.e. working out at the same time each day.

I really like starting the day off early with jumping rope. It's like a natural shot of caffeine and wakes me up to start my day. Feels bad ass in 30-40 degree weather at 6am.
For any sort of strength work, like lifting or calisthenics, I prefer late morning to early afternoon. It's better once you've been up and your CNS has settled in.

Now that I work out at 4AM M-F it has changed my life for the better. There is hardly a crowd at the gym vs 4PM and my day starts off so much more motivating when I pay myself first and do my routine.

I wish I was this person. I’ve tried so many times over the years to do the super early gym time and just keep slipping back to after work workouts. Great video as usual. I may try again…

I love my 3:30-4:30 a.m workouts. Been doing all MT lifting and running between 3 and 5 for 7 years now. I can't even workout any other time at this point lol

The few times i've sort of tried to do this (more like 6am than 4am) I just found i had terrible workouts. Couldn't warm up sufficiently, felt fatigued, and seemed to get injured more easily. Plus I would hit a bit of an energy wall later in the day. Perhaps that was because of nutrition or rushing things (maybe I needed that extra hour or two to provide a slow warm up) but ultimately i've settled on getting in 40min workouts every weekday lunch time. It's not ideal but I find it best balances feeling like my mind and body has woken up without having the stress of feeling you still have to do a workout out when you're tired in the evenings.

I think you can replace 4 AM with whatever reasonably early workout time and this idea is great. I do 5 AM. Gives me an hour at the gym, and an hour at home before work to get stuff done.
Helps you to get tired at a good time and keep the cycle going after you settle into it.

My gym opens at 5:30 AM but as a mom of dogs and humans, precedence goes to getting their needs taken care of first. Gym afterwards. However, I do love watching your vids so kudos to “getting it done. “
