I’m glad you did a separate video JUST on the display. This was the best review on it I’ve seen yet 👏🏼👏🏼
Look at WSJ as well. I thought it would be a duplicate but they compared 5 monitors along with a review from a pro color grader.
I LOVE that you did the bump test versus the LG, the way it loves to shake has always bothered me way more than it should. The plastic housing also loves to make loud pops as my office temperature changes
Yeah it’s the trade off for a cheap height adjustment
I have a fixed cheap AOC monitor and actually 3D printed something to try make it more stable.
incredible video as always Tyler. thanks :)
Your videos are stunning, Tyler! Thanks for sharing with us! Cheers from Brazil!
Thanks Eduardo!
Great review. Thank you
GORGEOUS! Sound effects were a nice touch on this one. I like the silliness :)
“It’s like the best TV you’ve ever heard.”
Perfect description.
Your videos are dope, dude.
Thank you.
Always love hearing your perspective. Another great video.
Thanks for covering the little details (seamless integration with Mac OS, build quality/stability, speakers, etc...) that are somewhat intangible, and hard to quantify, but make for a more pleasant long-term user experience. Whether it's worth the (relatively) high price is up to each of us to decide. Great food for thought and inspiration for saving up for one of these!
This is what most people complaining about this display are underestimating
Thanks for the review!!! That shot of your face next to the camera lens is slick!! keep up the great work.
Tyler's every single vid is a testament to his tech savvy. Man that was a well rounded vid👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
By far the best review of the display yet. So details and well said. Subscribing to you now!!
Love all the little details in your video. Subscribed!
Love your comparison from LG UF 5k with the Apple Studio Display, was nice to see the cameras go head to thead and mic, etc. I was fotunate that I purchase the LG UF 5K display just as Apple launched it’s new monitor and I took it back and upgraded. However, I will not get mine till early April since I ordered it with the height adjustment otherwise I would have gotten it this week like you. My magic keyboard and mouse did come in and I am using it as I type this comment. Also purchased the Satechi aluminum mouse pad in Space Grey and Silver, can’t decide which one will go back. Again thanks for the review and you said you recorded this in 8K, it looked sharp on my New MacBook Pro!
I love your videos. They are just very well-crafted.
loved this monitor, can't wait to get mine in hand
Will pick one up asap!
I'm also using a 5k LG screen since mid 2020 and its served me really well. I love the display, the camera and sound from the speakers. But the sound from the Mac Studio display seems awesome. Not sure I'll give up my LG5k just yet though, I really love this display.
Yeah if you had the LG there’s no rush, the Studio Display won’t change your life
Great review. And may I say sir that t-shirt/shacket combo is top notch. 👌🏻
great video as always Mr. Stalman
Excellent review with valuable content. Thank you.
I really appreciate the “can you tell anything about audio quality from a UA-cam video?” Comment since I always think that lol
Loudness is all that it usually measures
Awesome video Tyler - thank you !
Awesome review, like always 👏🏽
Thanks for the review!! I bought it for college stuff
Good, thorough, review. The first I’ve seen.
really great review!
Im still using the thunderbolt 27 display been waiting for this one!
Thank you for this very useful review
Awesome filming and editing. Can't wait to see Mac Studio review.
I hope they start making routers again
Damn 8k!! Video looked great on my iPhone screen I’ll have to watch on my tv next. Keep up the great videos Tyler!
Can't wait to pick mine up tomorrow with the Mac Studio!
Nice job man.
I'm watching this video on my Apple Thunderbolt display. And extra $400 is not that big a deal 6 years later. I definitely will get one. I've been waiting for this for years!
Thank you for the review
Nice review. Any thoughts on its accuracy and suitability for colour grading log footage like s-log 3 from my Sony A7S3?
Thanks for the calm and reasoned approach, covering all aspects of the unit. Nice to see someone spend no time on a mains cable!
Looking to replace a 2014 iMac 27” 5k in the M1 era my first attempt with macmini & LG 5k Ultra failed [no-one could resolve fault lines on the display] so I am still looking. I was hoping for an M1 iMac 27” but it doesn’t look like that will happen. But does this display do enough? Even with good speakers, camera and software it is old tech and still no base model height adjustment. So, no, not yet. But thanks for the effort.
I kind of think we’ll see a refresh not too far in the future
Awesome video & Thanks :)
I can get an H100 North Bayou VESA mount for the equivalent of $42USD -- and it is very high quality. I have mounted them through a drilled hole (grommel) as far back in the desk but far enough forward so that on the peripheral monitors I can pull them all the way forward and angle them at about 45 degrees and be with less than an arms length reach (about up to wrist). The Apple monitor with VESA mount is the same as with the non-adjustable stand... Although the stand is cute, I hate things cluttering up the desktop... so always VESA mounted.
I love this video with all of my forces
Great video!
Excellent video - looks good to me.
9:22 The end call sound for the cut from the webcam clip, bravo. 😆👏
Thanks for doing the monitor first!
Lovely content!!!!
Great video
Could you do an office tour? Love the plants!
Great stuff man! Wonder if you can help me make a decision. I am a full-time audio/video producer and currently use an iMac Pro (3 years old). I am upgrading my studio and I am having trouble deciding whether to pull the trigger on the new Mac Studio with the M1 Max. I have an i7, 64 gigs of ram, and a 1 TB of storage in my Pro. Do you think I would get considerably better performance with the M1 max version than what I currently have. I use Premiere Pro as my primary video software and Ableton Live and Audition for Audio Production. Or…the big question…should I look for a PC like the HP Z series? Thoughts?
Lovely monitor, for sure. Still, that price tag ... I got a Dell Ultrasharp (43") for about $1200 less. I hope I don't regret it. Thanks for the review. Really informative.
Maybe you’re aware of this or not but I just wanted you to know that I really think getting the vasa option makes the most sense for a couple reasons. I finally broke down and got an XDR because we have a business and you know invest in yourself and good things will happen. In getting the VESA mount that they selling and putting an on a vase arm I just found out to be incredibly flexible. The other thing was I’m not sure if you were aware this there are many really good options out there for VESA mounts that are basically like really nice stands that are totally flexible like the apple stand that they sell. Can even get it in different colours and it’s very solid I could send you a couple examples if you want.
Guess what I’m trying to say is that I did I don’t see any reason to get that stand for $400 it really doesn’t even do everything that you want so that’s just my two cents I mean I really think the Vesa is the eay to go and like I said you can even get a stand for it that has the vesa mount built into it so there you go.
What’s your favourite vesa stand?
I would love to see comparison of this and Eve Spectrum.
This thing costs $2500 AUD in Australia. At the same time, you can get a Dell S2721QS 27" 4K for $380, and guess what, you can adjust the height, swivel and even rotate!
Yep, and the only reason for 5k instead of 4k is because of janky macOS scaling that requires it for 27" (same with 4.5k for 24"). Limited inputs and no controls for things like brightness, too...
And you can adjust the height without paying a $500 dollar Apple tax. Too bad it won't work vertical either. Guess they couldn't figure how to soak you another $500 for that. At least we're not on the hook for those million dollar wheels.
great video. Any idea if the monitor can display non-apple devices, e.g. a Nintendo Switch?
Love the Pet Shop Boys shirt!!
Good stuff here Tyler 👍!! Can you speak to Adobe RGB gamut, as well as deconvolution sharpening at 100% zoom for prints? How does this monitor fare? I’m debating between this and the BenQ SW271C. Or perhaps use both monitors together.
It is quite expensive, but I need speakers and an awesome conference solution. Seems fair enough for looking cleaner than attachments.
My fav UA-cam!
is making the review!
let's go!!!
The addition of the studio mac speaker was so funny😂
which dark wood table is this? It looks amazing!
I love it as well...& will get one soon 😅😅😅😅
That audience gasp sound effect scared the absolute crap out of me 😂 I thought someone snuck up behind me 🤣 Great video, as usual ✌️😁
Spacial Audio 😂
@@stalman That would do it 😅 Doesn’t help that I’m using my AirPod Pros with spatial audio enabled. Haven’t had a good jump scare in a while, but I NEVER would’ve imagined it would’ve come from one of YOUR videos 🤣 Enjoy the new setup ✌️😁
The new Alienware QD-OLED Ultrawide is something like $1,300 and with a bit of calibration could be an interesting option for some. Aesthetic wise, it isn't great, but QD-OLED looks promising, plus you can adjust the height lol.
If only you could put that panel in this housing
This is the only contender in my opinion. so stuck on what to choose.
@@kareemabulaban9456 it's hard because they are almost polar opposites and prioritize different things.
@@kareemabulaban9456 It really depends on your use case I think. I’ve had some hands on time with the QD-OLED but not the Apple Monitor and I think I’d love having HDR, QD-OLED tech, and the 21:9 aspect ratio for working in Premiere. I suppose the only thing I don’t like is the aesthetic.
@@Grimcrawford I feel you on the aesthetics. But it’s actually one of the few “gamer” displays that isn’t over the tops in looks. Did you like the monitor? Was it worthwhile in a coloring perspective (once calibrated obviously) ?
Yeah in the age of OLED monitors coming, especially QD OLED already coming out with much better brightness and same colour space, this monitor almost feels like an already out dated 5 years old technology. It in fact is... LG UltraFine 5K might be wobbly but has almost the same panel as this and it's 5 years old.
You just have to be brace enough to critique fairly, and call lout old technology being pushed to people for way more than it's worth with a new pretty package.
It depends on a person’s perspective. Adding a webcam (without center stage) and adding decent studio monitor speakers, and add a usbc/thunderbolt 4 port hub, and you easily get the price difference between the 5k LG and the new “Studio”, and you get the aluminum build and higher brightness.
It’s not totally groundbreaking but it’s also not a bad deal either all things considered as a package.
It is what it is.
I mean at the end of the day Mac users don’t often game in general, and for graphics work or photography or video editing or music production the refresh rate is perfect for an affordable color accurate monitor for WORK, and content consumption.
Is what it is.
@@ghost-user559 it is what it is: outdated tech useless for creating HDR content, the single greatest contribution to cinema since the talkies.
@@JonPais Well that is indeed a bold statement, but I’ll go one further.
Apple is moving into VR and fully immersive multidimensional environments and content that can transport you across the earth and give you tours of the Alps or African Safaris, or the deep ocean in eventually ACTUALLY going to the maximum bandwidth of the human retina, thus literally bridging the gap between screen and eyes.
So honestly HDR is for consumption and still niche at that. If HDR is Talkies than Virtual reality in 6K plus resolutions will literally be the holodeck from Star Trek.
Imagine dual Apple Watches as haptic feedback and hand motion capture, and AirPod pro, driven by a Studio Ultra or a stand alone wireless headset which could replicate the equivalent of a 120 FOOT full eye bandwidth resolution cinema screen?
So with a grain of salt, I would say as impressive as HDR is, I think Apple is going to go a full ten steps above that very soon.
Now it might cost as much as your entire computer? But it would make hdr screens a novelty, because that close to the eye you can replicate screens the size of movie theaters and a full 3d rendered theatre all around you if you turn your head side to side.
That’s what they actually are working on, and that’s very interesting to me.
This is a semi affordable “reference monitor” for Prosumers. Actual “pros” can get their overly expensive display. And HDR will come to an affordable Apple external display eventually, but I don’t think that’s the end goal. This is a stopgap for the 27 inch iMac, with some added ports and better than most built in speakers and a webcam for conference calls and livestreams, that is all.
For 80-90% of content producers and content consumers this is still a premium experience. For people with that 10-20% added discernment, well that would not come at this price point yet.
Personally I would be interested in something similar to project looking glass, which is an actual 3d holographic type display, but the 8k version is probably like 10-20K$? So I’m not in the market for that kind of luxury personally.
Glad to hear you review it. Knowing that the monitor speakers can't replace my reference monitors is exactly what I needed to know. Of course, I assumed that would be too good to be true but I was impressed with my Macbook speakers so a part of me hoped...
That said, I did use them for most of my editing on this video. I just put on headphones for a final sanity check
@@stalman I wish you would have kept that to yourself. Now I'm tempted again. 😂
I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it...
I was hoping the Studio Display would be more capable as a companion to a 16" MacBook Pro, but the use of outdated screen tech isn't a compelling buy for me as the HDR capabilities and local dimming makes the price simply not worth it given the compromises. The MiniLED's black level capabilities have been amazing for me for print photography which is an area not covered as much when it comes to a slightly more consistent color environment (most people focus on the peak brightness/HDR aspects). The performance limitations with the price being almost the same as a base model 27" iMac made it an unfortunate pass for me.
This is complete nonsense. It is by no means an "outdated screen tech", but on the contrary the most widespread one in the field of digital imaging at the moment. Monitors in this size with MiniLED and HDR do not exist at this time and certainly not with Pro Motion. The price is absolutely reasonable for a completely new developed display in this quality and with these features. The comparison with the entry-level iMac 27" is undercomplex and childish. 🙄
@@RudolfGottfried Outdated does not equal obsolete. Relative to what the 27" offered at it's beginnings, it doesn't give the same level of quality/capability. Also promotion isn't possible at 5k either, so it's more realistic to compromise with a 4k miniled panel which exists in the market (even if the price was higher)
@@BrianMcDonald Outdated is and remains wrong. Mainstream is the right word. The Studio Display even has a considerably higher quality/capability value, not because of the higher brightness and the high-quality aluminum case with excellent speakers, micros and webcam but also the considerably better color accuracy with the ability to process various professional color profiles. ProMotion is rather superfluous for monitors for image or video editing, nice to have and nothing more.
And again, there are currently no 4K/5K or even 6K displays with MiniLED on the market and certainly not with 120 Hz.
@@RudolfGottfried ASUS makes 27 and 32" 4k MiniLED monitors. Granted they are also very expensive. They also make a 32" 4K 144Hz screen but I'd certainly accept doing without promotion for the contrast.
I think all the MiniLED rumors and the fact that apple has done a really good job innovating recently allowed expectations to be high for this product so after a lot of the big "wins" with previous releases, the lesser delivered product in this field is a downer. We are right on the cusp of a shift as more MiniLED screens are going to be released on 2022, but it could have been a chance for Apple to drive the industry.
This begs the question. Is there a 5k display in the market that has a refresh rate of 120Hz? There must be some sort of technical hurdle preventing it to exists.
It would be nice if you had multiple studio displays, they would form a microphone and speaker array that would tie into center stage. If you happened to have a pair of Home Pods, it could then form 5.1 setups. But I am being generous.
This thing is a blessing compared to my well well-reviewed dell 4K monitor. Just every aspect of this thing is amazing. I don't hate any display that doesn't match my MacBook pro's display - when it comes to desktop monitors, this thing is awesome compared to the alternatives I researched.
great video! Is there a huge difference in sharpness between the glossy and nano Display?
There is a difference but to my eye it’s very minor
Thank you!
Best review on the monitor
Definitely agree
I love the Pet Shop Boys T shirt!
I appreciate the tap test. I have a dell S3221 that has a feature to allow a few degrees of rotation and it sits a degree or two off-kilter. No way to fix it! So annoying.
on the 6K XDR the nano texture glass make the 6K display much blurrier, to me it looks more like a 2.5K display. I hate it lol. Is it better here ? i've ordered it without it anyway. Also, can you scale down the interface ? cause on the XDR you can't and i find mac os to be too big on it :(
Should I buy 1 or 2 for my programming and coding stuff? I have 175-75 so I prefer a really clear on monitor
I love that you can buy an iMac for cheaper and get the same display. You could even do target disk mode to just use a MacBook with the iMac
That 8k looked insane lol. Definitely notice a difference in this video
This is a perfect upgrade to my 2011 Thunderbolt Display!
Thank you for the quick review.
Loved seeing it at the keynote but sadly not for me… not the price, but no daisy-chaining of two of them over a single TB3/4 cable… currently using 2 27“ 4ks over a single TB3 Dock…. If I were to upgrade to these, I would go from single-cable to as many as 3… and all the rerouting that implies
Well it’s impossible and will remain so. 5k displays need over 30gbps. Thunderbolt 4 and 3 is 40gbps
Tyler, that’s a great review of the Mac Studio monitor. Can you tell us where you got that little step up for the monitor? That might be a better alternative for me as opposed to spending $400 more for the “elevator” mounting on the monitor.
Yup it works well and made by twelve south
hey Tyler. I saw in the video you are using twelve south book arc stand. does it fits nicely with your 16 inch MacBook Pro 2021?
I am on the fence on getting a monitor to go with my 14 inch .
Man, I was really hoping for a scaled-up version of the MacBook Pro display, but no dice. That would pretty much have the specs of their XDR display though, so I knew in the back of my mind it wouldn't happen. Maybe next time.
This looks really nice, but, given the price… I’m kind of glad I don’t have a use for it 😅. My gaming PC gets the external monitors on my desk, and I’m not going to even try to mess with gaming beyond 1440p, so this is automatically out. My order of magnitude cheaper MSI 27” works fine for gaming and very occasional MacBook Pro secondary display use. I’ll just keep using my MacBook’s display for crispy text and wide gamut, fairly colour accurate photo editing work.
Could you review the Alienware AW3423DW QD OLED monitor in comparison to this Apple monitor? It fells like a much better deal than the Apple Studio display.
Are you able to test if a Blackmagic Ultrastudio will plug into the monitor and receive a signal? (SDI/HDMI to Thunderbolt 3)
How can we get our hands on one early? Or do we all have to wait? :(
Ahhh man, I didn’t wanna get this thing, because I just couldn’t justify paying $1500+ for it, but man you hooked me in.. 😩✊🏼
I mean to be fair, I don’t see why this is a good option for anybody? Literally half the price can get you something to match it and I’m some cases even outdo it.
@@jasoniviejr.7925 I need to buy a monitor, but I don't have this huge money. Please tell me which monitors you think are a great value.
Same here. I would like one. Like he said, it’s all about modularity. So for me… it can’t be a loss.
@@MalcolmREBORN what so modular about this monitor
@@Metamine0 nothing really lol
Great review! What speakers do I see at 4:08? (sorry bit off-topic) Thx!
Kanto! That from a previous desk tour
Your color grading is the best I ever seen on UA-cam channel… can we get a tutorial on your color correction and color grading?.. am a new subscriber tho
I did one on final grading but I will go a lot deeper some day
@@stalman we’ll so much appreciate that ❤️
Hey Tyler.
Im wondering how tall you are? I'm super short (166 cm) is it also beneficial for short people to have the hight adjustable stand? I was not sure and ordered the more expensive stand to have the possibility to adjust.
im stuck between this display and the alienware AW3423DW which is an qd-oled HDR display for $1299... any thoughts?
For $1000 plus category - what are your views on some of the new QD-OLED monitors like Alienware AW3423DW and Samsung Odyssey 34" G8QNB? Would be absolutely wonderful to see a comparison. I know these are ultra wide monitors - but very interested in display quality comparison
I’d be curious to test them. In a windows setup they would be much more tempting, but when you’re going with Apple the integration is huge
This panel is pretty much the same as the one from a 8 years old 27" imac, its tech is so outdated, so I wonder how is this going to last much longer?
what's the sound pack you're using?
It’s very hard to upgrade from my 27” iMac for faster hardware when the display, speakers and camera all work perfectly well and knowing you’d have to fork over $1600 for essentially the same thing. A real shame you can’t use the iMacs with the Mac studio.
Luna Display you could look into but it’s not without bugs.
That's always been a major flaw with all-in-ones... you paid for this beautiful, expensive display but are very limited in using it outside the internal, aging computer.
Have you tested it on Windows?? Dying to know how it works because I use a windows machine on top of my 16” 2021 Mac
That background intro tune is killing
yeah..was going to buy ir for professional level multimedio stuff llike that
why that display is much cheaper over there???😭😭😭
What I don’t understand is I work in an office where every monitor is on a VESA mount and I see tons of people with VESA mounted displays and yet why do people in reviews never consider that option?
