Somebody in our coworking space got it and the first thing I noticed was the speed of connecting. You are the first person I heard mentioning it. Overall the best design, build quality, picture, sound, connectivity and integration in the ecosystem. No idea why people are hating it. Will get one and be happy for 10+ years.
The bezels/ borders wasn’t an oversight. It was made that way for a reason. It improves your visual accuracy when reviewing work close to the edge, vs your vision competing to “see” to what’s behind the monitor when reviewing. It’s creates a set border that your vision can use to guide its focus when reviewing. Yes aesthetically the bezels could be thinner… but for a workflow I’m happy they kept the bezels, ex: print work. Love the studio display. Still have 5 30 inch cinemas and 8 thunderbolt displays to replace 😅, if and when they die. You get what you pay for.
Absolutely agreed. The "thin bezel" crowd are a bit thick in my book, and simply overlook "current style" for practicality. I'm a photographer, and those deep black bezels give me some reference on the periphery.
nice cope, the XDR display has slimmer bezels for a simple reason - it's the more expensive model and Apple always wants to sell the more expensive model to you
Those are exactly what my reasons were! I guess for a lot of folks small things like these don't really bother, but monitor not switching on instantly or Color grading on the screen is super important for me and my work.
The way I look at this display, it should have gone one of two ways. If it HAD to be $1,600, they absolutely have no excuse in not giving this display dimming zones, better colors, Face ID, and way slimmer bezels. However if they really wanted to give us only what they did, that’s totally fine, it shouldn’t have been more than $1,300. Especially since this and the Mac studio are a duo intended to replace the 27” iMac, and together they can’t be cheaper than $3,600. Apple’s ultimate advantage here is the fact that they have almost no competition in this specific monitor type. I’m not as mad as most people, but there’s just no way to look at this without knowing that it should have done more, or been cheaper.
The color calibration, accuracy and reference modes are the best in the industry. No external monitor under 3k has local dimming zones. Mini Led is expensive. The studio display is replacing the high-end iMac and iMac Pro. The entry-level mac mini and the studio display is replacement for the iMac currently. Until there's a consumer display based on the 24in iMac. Also the cheapest 5k monitor is 1300. Why would Apple’s cost the same when it's better in every way?

The new MacBooks start at $2,000 and have everything you just described in the display, plus some. And those laptops have to worry about keyboards and high-end computer chips and trackpads and speakers and yadayadayada. Point is, we know they could absolutely add those features to this for this price since this is ONLY a display. For reference, this is the exact panel ripped from the old 27" iMac, but that started for only $200 more, and is SEVERAL years old. So by your logic, all the computing power in the 27" iMac is only only worth $200 at starting price? No, of course not, because they're upcharging like crazy for this knowing that they've tapped into a niche market that is hard to compare with, causing people like you to defend it tirelessly. 5k monitors are a niche, not necessarily a luxury, so of course its hard to compare to other displays: because they don't exist. that's why apple did this. So that they couldn't be compared and blamed for making a seriously overpriced monitor. It may be one of the only of it's kind, but that doesn't make it a good deal at all.
@@papermelon It’s not owned by Apple unless you think LG is owned by Apple. Yes they had input on the design but they don’t determine the pricing. If they could sell it cheaper and maintain their margin why wouldn’t they? It’s not like Apple is making money from LG sales. Your MacBook and Studio Display comparison falls apart quickly under inspection. The MacBooks have 14in an 16in display that are around 3k in resoultion. Obviously a display that is bigger (using more materials and larger tooling) and is higher resolution will cost more. The Studio Display is also brighter under normal conditions as the peak brightness for Mini-Led only applies to watching HDR content. The Studio Display also has a processor in it because it needs something to do the smart features as well as manage thermals, ports etc and it also has speakers even better than the 16in Pro. So in terms of features and price they are pretty close. As for the pricing compared to the older iMac, Apple’s all-in-ones are always cheaper than buying separate devices to use together. It’s weird to focus on the age of the panel. 4k panels are older than 5k ones are you mad that you can still higher quality ones for more? As far as why Apple chose 5k over 4k you might want to do some research before spouting out bs lol You can argue any after 720p is an unnecessary and a luxury. 5k has 50% more pixels and is notably more sharp on a display that’s 27in. Now if we are talking about a display that’s 22-24in 4k could work because of the higher pixel density.
@@chidorirasenganz You can throw all the words and numbers around to justify the MacBook display argument all you want, but there's simply no way that a screen less than twice the size of both MacBooks should have a MUCH cheaper panel, no computing capabilities, no keyboards or laptop components, and still nearly cost as much. Concerning the agreement between Apple and LG with the Ultrafine, you have no idea what the possible agreement is. Apple could very well have product profits at stake. The LG Ultrafine is one of the only external displays that was being sold officially on the Apple website, so I'm fairly confident Apple didn't do that just as a charity to support LG. There's a very good chance they have profit shares for sales on the device, and therefore likely have a say on when or if it goes on sale. As far as the Processor in the display is concerned, it's an A13, Not even relatively close to the M1 Pro and Max chips in the computers: either in price-to-produce or power. It's a 3 year old chip that has nearly no purpose in the display. Don't believe me? Try watching most reviews on this and figure out for yourself how unnecessary the chip is. Center stage (one of the display "features") is something that should be given to the devices hooked up to the display - Like iPads and Macs - and for many, it already is. You could make some sort of an argument in behalf of the chip if perhaps it allowed windows and non-Apple computers to have features like center stage without the OG operating system, but NO. It doesn't. It's a limp, regular idle monitor once connected to anything besides a Mac/iPad. So, what's the point? Those devices already provide those exclusive features, period. It never has been, and never should be up to the display to add those features. And don't give me some "iT hAs wEbCaM ImAgE pRoCeSsInG" bs about this. reviews have already shown that it has an awful camera, just as bad as monitors without a chip, and we've seen hundreds of devices have a webcam without a processor to support. My point is simple: The chip is completely unnecessary, no matter how some people defend it. Our history of monitors and other tech proves it. If it was doing something useful and revolutionary for the display that hasn't been done before, then fine, it makes sense. But it doesn't. It doesn't even have things like FaceID, which could be argued to be the only real use out of a processor in the display. Perhaps in the future they'll update the display chip software and give it some great new features, but they don't right now, and you can't justify a product based off of speculation of a potential future software update. And if the chip is your excuse for why this costs so much, then you're doing exactly what they wanted you to do by getting blinded by that aspect. As for your argument on the age of displays, are you kidding? new 4k displays and updates to previous 4k displays are happening yearly. The "idea" of 4k displays isn't new, duh, but the panels, colors and build of the computers is getting upgraded regularly on many (if not most) popular 4k displays. Ya know why LG hasn't upgraded their 5k display in so long? IT'S BECAUSE IT HAS NO COMPETITION, so they CAN get lazy. Which is my entire point about the actually value of what this display offers. Lastly, your comparison to 720p vs 5k displays for what's a "luxury" item is the goofiest thing I've heard you argue yet. The difference between 720p to 4k is MASSIVE (hence 4k being the new industry standard) whereas 4k - 5k is a relatively menial difference. Literally even professional tech reviewers like Marques Brownlee even admit there's a very small difference. So yes, 4k vs 5k is more of a niche, and an unnecessary upgrade - compared to 720p vs 4k being a luxury. Your argument falls short.
@@papermelon I’ve already stated why a larger screen with more pixels and a brighter backlight would cost more. If you can’t understand simple material cost then maybe this discussion is beyond your ability. The display has computing abilities hence where the smart feature come from. We don’t know if won’t be able to run additional features in the future like a tvOS but it’s already bringing center stage to Macs (which have never had it) as well as spatial audio etc. Displays have to have a logic board so unless your argument is that they should have put in an older A series Im not sure what point you are making. Apple no longer sells the LG on their site with the release of their Studio Display. While I’m sure they get a cut of what is sold on the store, they don’t “own” the product or company lol The pricing between the chips I think is no more than 30$. I seen reviews of the display lol I’ve also seen the same sensor work in the iPad. It’s not hard to work out the webcam will be good. In fact in a number of reviews and live streams it looked fine so it’s obviously not regular issue. Why shouldn’t a display add features? Or handle processing? There’s no logical reason not to. Every webcam has a ISP so I’m not sure what you meant webcams not having a processor. The chip isn’t the main reason for the price but for some reason you are unable to remember why. Size, Resolution, Build quality, Ports are the main ones. You still have named a reason why the panel needs an upgrade. It already has better color calibration and color gamut support than most monitors out atm. Mini Led will be on the new Pro Display and if they do high refresh (I doubt it at 6k) that will go to the Pro display as well. No none Pro Apple product has gotten Promotion or MiniLED. 720p compared to 4k sounds goofy to you because you don’t know how much more resolution 5k is. To me you sound equally as goofy. It’s 50% more pixels far from a menial difference. Especially at 27in 4k is sub 200 ppi. You can argue any upgrade is unnecessary. Just depends if its worth it to you to upgrade to it.
I have ordered the Mac Studio and the display will follow shortly as soon as my budget allows. A great display that I have been waiting for a long time.
It's perfectly valid to complain that the display is too expensive. I still ordered one because it's the best build quality and display quality of pretty much any desktop monitor for less than $2K. Apple is not trying to build a "budget" option and they seem to be okay with it being a fairly niche product. It has a limited audience which is mostly by design. The number one complaint I have seen is the webcam. I've used it and honestly don't care. Web cam quality does not matter in the least to me. I use it for video conferencing while working at home and all that matters is that it has a webcam, not how good the webcam is.
Its $300 more expensive than the LG 5K which apparently is fairly priced, so with the build quality and other features of the Studio Display, I would say that it too is fairly priced.
@@gwvaio I care about style in my setup and don’t really need the features that are often mentioned as missing from the studio display. It’s perfect for my needs but my needs are hardly representative of the majority of users.
I grabbed one before watching this or any other video because of the 6 reasons you detailed. I wasn’t sure, but I was confident the things that matter to me would be well worth the price tag.
Hello Jerry! Really like the video! Couldn’t agree more! I have a Mac Studio display with height adjustment and nano-textured glass and absolutely LOVE it! Never had a retina Mac display before and it continues to wow me every time I use it. Very grateful to be able to afford one these days. Replaced a late 2013 27” iMac which is now ‘vintage’. Still love that iMac though, but am no longer using it as I now have a Mac Studio with 2TB drive and otherwise the base model.

The display is awesome, I have seen one and would get it for any of my Mac setups if I did not have an M1 iMac in blue. You can't get anything like it with 5k..perfect pairing for MacBooks, Mac mini, or of course studio..people will complain about anything no matter how good it is.
This video sold me on upgrading. I currently use a 27inch 4K Samsung display with no mic, speakers, or webcam which I am going to start needing more and more (AirPods aren't cutting it) but I cannot stand wires all over my desk. This display and my MacBook Pro 14 will help clean up my desk and keep it free of clutter.
Thank you for your assessment. We finally realized how slow it takes other monitors to wake up from sleep mode. That’s why we stopped using our 2009 Mac Pro.
Editing on this display is a pretty spectacular experience. I agree, it has some excellent qualities and after working on it I don’t care about what it doesn’t have.
To the senses, black is essentially an "invisible" colour. I have a 2017 27" iMac, and I don't notice the bezels. I would argue that a bezel-less monitor would clash more with a coloured wall or background
I love my studio display for all the reasons you mentioned, plus centre stage, which has solved a problem I’ve had with all of my other displays. I like to have the middle of the screen just below eye level and without centre state, Zoom and Teams put my head down at the bottom of the screen. With center stage, I’m always in the right place. Finally, I can’t be the only person who is wondering what other things have been planned for that A13 Bionic chip in the display. I have to imagine they have more things planned for this display than what they’re talking about now.
Thanks Jerry - great Vlog! But honestly - do you have any thoughts as to why Apple would not have just thinned the bezels into 2022 standards? I mean is there something in their buying loop or preferred Vendors package that was obtained "cheaper" to make this . . . mistake . . . worthwhile. Chuckle all you want - but - beefy bezels are preventing me from making the Studio purchase at this time. Why - because - to me - aesthetics really matter. Why - because - in a way - that is what makes me a Mac user!
1. Design - I agree it’s strongest side 2. Stand design nice but extra cost to have some flexibility 3. 5k is a pro and con - 4k 27” you push few inches and get same fidelity as this one making it a dubious pro - also considering 5k limitation of not having faster refresh its more of a con than pro. Lack of hdr will keep professional creatives away. 4. Camera is not needed when you have MacBook, nor mics, nor speakers - especially if you use headset. All in all this screen is for people wanting nicely built monitor with ok spec. 5. Instant wake is nice indeed. 6. Single cable is good but many will have a dock anyway by now.
The Apple Studio Display is a 600 nits monitor that offers an adequate peak brightness for grading HDR. (And far more than adequate for photography.) Because it has no type of local dimming it cannot reproduce dark details hence it’s low 1200:1 contrast ratio. For non-professional HDR grading in a normally lit room the darkest shades will be washed-out thereby limiting viewable contrast. Thus, the Studio Display will likely be acceptable. The 60Hz refresh rate is exactly what it should be for video editing as is the P3 colorspace. The power cord is perfect to plug into a power strip--and it can be removed. The name "studio" is clearly saying the display is for content creation--so gammers simply move on.
Was going to purchase the 27 inch Studio Monitor to make it a KISS Apple solution. 27-inch is the sweet spot I am looking for. Thing was unlike the MacBook Air I purchased could not order/purchase the Studio Display for store delivery. So I purchased a 27" LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim USB-C Monitor Widescreen LED IPS LCD w/ Webcam - Black - 27MD5KA-B which Apple was selling in in the past in its stores. Love the design of both the Apple Studio Display, and the LG 27MD5KA-B. Looks like it is going to take a few more seconds to turn on. Thing was when I was little I would wake up on a Saturday morning go into the front room and turn on the TV. I would then go into the kitchen to get my cereal and milk and then go back into the front room. If I was lucky the black and white tube TV may have warmed up enough for me to see a clearer image. So waiting a few seconds for a monitor, or any other device to turn on is not an issue for this normal. My late mother always told me "Patience is a virtue".

I love mine. I mainly use it for Adobe Apps. I love my little MacBook Pro but got tired of watching the beachball spinning around. This machine is awesome, and looks totally cool on the desk. I don’t like the cheap plastic look, this is better.
I have no need for webcam, internal speakers (or mic really) but it still didn't stop me buying two for my new setup. Same as you Jerry, I'd been waiting years for Apple to disconnect the display from the computer in this segment. I can't afford either the MacPro or the XDR display so the Mac Studio and Studio Display really ticked the boxes for me and I couldn't be happier with them ☺
I drove 6 hours (three hours each way) on Friday to pick one of these puppies from the nearest Apple Store. I couldn’t be happier with my choice. Would I have preferred to pay half as much for it? Sure. Am I sorry that I paid what Apple is asking? Not in the least. It’s a great display with gorgeous colors and crisp text. It’s well-designed, pretty to look at, and plays nicely with my Mac. Drawbacks: It doesn’t work with USB-C cables, even Apple-branded ones, to connect the display to my Mac. It doesn’t have an HDMI port, so I really can’t connect my PS 5 or Apple TV to it. But it does such a nice job of working with my M1 Pro MBP that I wouldn’t trade it for a different monitor with these features unless it worked as seamlessly-which I gather no other 5K display does.
@@whoami6821 I'm not sure. I had planned on trying a USB-C to HDMI cable I already have. But if an Apple-branded USB-C to USB-C cable running from an M1 Pro MBP to the ASD doesn't work, I'm sure an HDMI to USB-C cable won't. It would have to be HDMI to Thunderbolt and I don't have one of those kicking around (do they even make them??).
A+ video! Additional benefits: 1. Retains value over time, like most apple products 2. Apple support > LG/Samsung/Dell/etc support 3. Great for non tech-savvy household members: plug & play, chooses appropriate resolution automatically, volume adjustments continue working as normal, etc
It's OK - the main issue I have with it is the premium price - in Australia these are AU $2500 for a 60hz monitor sure they are calibrated - so is every other studio monitor and I don't care for the speakers and web cam stuff which are just recycled parts from the iMac/ iPhone anyway. Not to say these are not a good idea - they just try to justify the price by adding these parts in to what is supposed to be a studio monitor for semi pros and pros alike who don't need the full HDR display

I have a BenQ SW321C 32 inch display which has excellent color accuracy out of the box (perhaps the best available at the $2,000 price point), and it has hardware calibration, which is more accurate (and convenient) than software calibration. Also, my display reproduces 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, which is superior to your Studio Display. This is not to say that your monitor isn't excellent; however, if you want the best display for professional photographers (at $2,000 or less) and have no need for the bells and whistles of the Study Display (e.g., speakers and camera), you should check out the BenQ offerings. (Also, I like the removable power cord.)
I am a typical apple fan, every digital product is from Apple. Recently, I bought a Studio display to hook up my MacBook pro for my design work. My MacBook pro(bought it in 2021 M1) doesn't connect with Studio Display very well, the "allow to connect" window flashes for a sec and disappeared. I tried restarting the computer and reconnecting the cable multiple times. It finally connected, but not even lasted an hour, the display went black and never connect again. I would understand if I tried to connect with a window system laptop might rise the compatible issues, but mine is new model MacBook Pro. It was a big let down. I don't know if I've got the defeated product. I wonder if anyone else has the same issue like me.
Love your take on this display...great info...i also love your text animations that fly in and out...where can i get those text animations? I use final cut pro. thanks. Norm
Does it have any physical buttons on it? What happens when you plug it in to a Windows or Linux computer? Does the sound work? Can you adjust brightness/color?
The only thing I’m worried about is the color accuracy. I edit in premiere pro and that uses the rec709 gamut. There’s an option in the studio’s preferences to switch to that, but is it *really* accurate to the color gamut?
Spot on. The instant-waking-up feature is one of the main advantages of apple displays. It drives me nuts my current 5-seconds-delay “featured” by my LG 38 ultrawide display. Getting the Apple studio for sure. Thanks for your clean cut review 🙏🏼 ✊🏼
Great video! Finally got my Mac Studio Display two days ago! Took a while since I orderd it late March. But I am speechless! Was so tempted to cancel because it was taking so long and used our 4K TV for a display for the Mac Studio I ordered to go with it. Got both the height-adjustable stand and nano-textured glass. I really LOVE it!
I just watched your Eve review prior to watching this video. I found both very helpful. Sadly, I find most of the people doing the Studio Display reviews (good or bad) aren't really comparing it to anything else. I think a better way to review this monitor is based on how it is going to be used. It seems like it is a great monitor for people doing photography and video editing. I'm not really sure if it is or is not a good choice for someone primarily doing web browsing or working on documents. Thoughts?
First, I will say that YES, this is a fantastic display for everyday computing, not matter how big or small. You know this because its very similar to the 27" iMac and even the 24" iMac displays. Second, the most difficult part when comparing this to other displays is that there just simply are not any displays that offer similar specs except for the LG ultrafine 5k. Every other display at 27" is 4k or 1440p. Some are brighter than others, some have higher refresh rate, some have crappy 2w speakers built in but none of them have 5k.....(and the 5k 2k displays and similar are not the same they are not high DPI with over 200PPI). So it really is difficult to compare to others. This is sharper than all other displays. This will most likely work better than other displays with your Mac. This will have good speakers built in. This has a better overall consistency, in my opinion than the others. If you are comparing against a $300 4k display you have to decide what is important to you.
Eve Spectrum vs Studio Display, which one do you choose? I like both but I am indecisive about these two. Studio Display definitely has better build quality as well as customer service than Eve’s. But the Spectrum has 4k 144hz and has better windows support and obviously much cheaper. I really want to hear what you would choose between these two. Also do you think it’s a good idea to wait for a “Studio Display pro”, or other 4k 144hz monitors (without the ugly look designed for gamers)?
I have both. I thought EVE was fantastic until Studio Display arrived. I bought a standard glass version, and I have to say colors, contrast, sharpness looks much better on Studio Display. I was surprised how much of a jump is a 5K from 4K. Built quality and design are on another level. I also use it with a PC with DP->Thunderbolt cable. While I miss gsync, I must say that scaling and picture quality on Studio Display is much better. 1440p looks really good on a 5K display since 5K it’s precisely 2x1440p. For gaming, I now have three usable resolutions 1440p, 4K, and 5K. The only thing to keep in mind is that there is no way to adjust brightness on a PC. Also, the Studio display wakes up way quicker than EVE and is 100% reliable on both platforms, which is not something I can tell about EVE. I have 105 firmware on EVE, and I’m still struggling with Mac compatibility and HDR on PC.
@@distreall Thanks for the reply! Which is more of a bigger jump, 144hz from 60hz, or 5k from 4k? I heard from quite a lot people that the former is way better than the latter.
@@jiajun5984 I'm a UI Designer, so I don't think I will be objective in this matter😄 But for me definitely, 5K and much better colors are way more significant upgrades than 144Hz. I tried calibrating EVE, but it's nowhere near Studio Display. Also, I've been using EVE for quite some time, and I just put it back in the box the second day I got Studio Display and never thought a second about the high refresh rate. The only reason to get EVE is if you have a PC and you want to prioritize games. Then I think EVE's gsync/freesync is even a bigger upgrade than a high refresh rate. For example, I had to lock globally vsync in nVidia settings to fix flickering in Elden Ring; it probably tried to use a variable refresh rate. I don't play competitive multiplayer, so most games I lock on 60fps, and then it doesn't matter if you have 60Hz or 144Hz. To benefit from 120-144Hz, you need to have a PC to produce 120-144fps, but you probably know that.
That's a great and informing video. I've been using the Dell U2720Q for 6 months now and It is a really good monitor. It's 4k with type c connection and charging my mac at 90W. It has a lot of good ways too, but you have to get desk speakers, webcam, and all these extra accessories are messing up the aesthetic. It is not as clean as the studio display after all. Also It is not created to use it with MacOS and the speed of the studio display is mind blowing comparing to my monitor. I really liked the idea of studio display and it might be worth it.

IMHO the best "stand" option is the $100 Amazon Basics VESA arm. It has pivot (unlike the Apple stands) and will unveil another feature of the display: Automatic pivot detection. It's fast, requires no settings or drivers.
I wish they would make a monitor without camera or speakers .. its just not needed these days in a desktop set-up and makes the monitor too expensive for no good reason other than they added stuff I don't want or need . Great review through
Two biggest problems I have with this display is lackluster basic stand, while height adjustable should've been the basic one and lack or second input. Latter could've been easily remedied by at least offering a standalone KVM switch. I would even pay a few hundred bucks for it. But it is what it is. A 2000$ display (because tilt only model sucks and practically unusable and VESA mount option on it is meh) with a single input. So at the end I guess the inadequate price is what I have the biggest issue with.
@@JerrySchulze Thanks, those were my only concerns. The price is steep, but the "experience" of this monitor is far above any other options. I'm no apple snob but I learned after many expensive lessons not to trust people about sound or computers. The less friction the better, life hacks: Buy a good chair and bed, tailer your clothes, moisturize and reduce computer/device friction. All those are good investments, imo. Save money in other areas.
I went with another manufacturer display, due to price, when I recently upgraded my 2015 iMac. I ended up returning it and ordering the studio display. I couldn’t be happier and it seems like it’s built to last for quite some time. Probably through one or two desktop upgrades without having to get new peripherals. One thing I don’t like is sleep mode either on the display or, in my instance, a docked MacBook Pro. I have heard the Mac studio has the same issue. It’s the usb c hub on the display. It toggles power off/on all day to any device plugged into the hub while sleeping. I thought it may be “find my” but all those power options have been disabled. It’s super annoying and even harmful if you have an external HD or device with a in line usb power lcd screen/button. It constantly turns off and on even though the display and desktop are in sleep mode. Other users are also reporting the issue.

@@JerrySchulze Thanks a lot. Is there any option on MacOS to scale a native resolution? In PC you can choose recommended/native resolution and scale it to 125%, 150%, 200% without loosing qualuity. Sorry to be nudnik, but it is very important to me because I really think to make a switch from PC to Mac.
This display would be dope (to me) if it had OLED/MiniLED, ProMotion, and a better Webcam. Also the icing on the cake would be if the A13 in the Display allowed the display to run TVOS or offer Airplay. But it doesn't. So while the build quality looks excellent, at $1600, this isn't the display for me.
All of your wish points would be nice with the exception of TvOS and Airplay which I'll comment on later. Regarding OLED/MiniLED/ProMotion you have to remember we're talkng about Apple where nothing is cheap. If you think $1599 is expensive then imagine what the display would cost with OLED/MiniLED (deeper blacks) and /ProMotion (120Hz). IMO you'd be approaching $3.5K for a base model. Hopefully, Apple will deliver on their promise to improve the WebCam with an update. Airplay is not needed in a display. Any audio source played through the Studio Display's speakers is streamed via the internet or an external device such as an external HD. Both sources rely on a MacBook, MacMini or Mac Studio as the controller which has the requisite internet connection and/or software. TvOS IMO will never be seen in a display. TvOS requires and internet connection to an Apple server. Displays (as designed by Apple) are just a means to view content sent to them via an external device. They are not tended to act as autonomous units.
@@ajtrek3873 when I speak of airplay I don’t just mean audio, I also mean video just like on the Apple TV. Would be a great video conferencing solution. Although as of macOS 12.0, the mac can act as an airplay server and accept airplay video…so a Mac connected to the studio display would implement what I’m talking about. Regarding your point about tvOS will never be in a display, I never expected a display to run iOS 15.4 with an a13 either. But A display with an a13 now exists, and the a13 is more powerful than the a12 in the 4K Apple TV. Apparently, the studio display also has 64 GB of storage, the same as the Apple TV. Therefore, given the hardware choices of apple, I don’t think it’s a stretch of the imagination to see how tvos or displayOS could be implemented in a display.
Buying the Studio Display is like buying their Pro Stand + iMac Display. The height adjustable one look very similar to the Pro Stand and it costs $1000 plus $1000 for the monitor. The base version stand cost $600 plus $1000 monitor.
The biggest issue I have is that you have to buy what is essentially an iPhone 11 just to get a monitor. It inflates the price when that cost could go towards making a better monitor. It's not that it's a bad device, it's a bad price for a monitor. I think it's telling that you said yourself in the video that if you're gonna be doing conference calls you'd probably use a different device regardless of the camera quality.
Curious, how does the display audio compare to the HomePod mini stereo pair audio quality for everyday use? These are the speakers to most likely remain on my desk with the monitor and they are easily used as Mac speakers - the video sync issues seem to have been fixed over time. Nothing seems to be published comparing them.
Great overview as always! Personally I went with the Dell Ultrasharp USB Hub for about $600 as I can’t justify the additional $1,000 price tag for the monitor in my workflow. At the moment I’d rather put that money towards a secondary computer/iPad Pro to increase my general productivity. But then again I’m not a video editor (I’m a coder/excel/Google sheets enthusiast) so my workflow isn’t maximized by the display features. Keep up the great videos!
Hi, could you check if it possible to hook a Nintendo Switch via a "HDMI to USB Type-C 4K60Hz Active Adapter M/F" (or same type of adapter) up to the monitor and see if it works wit sound and all. Can you charge a phone with one of the three usb-c ports? Thanks in advance, good luck.

honestly, I havnt had any issues with any monitors I have tested since getting the new MacBook Pros and before that I had switched back to my 27" iMac. There are still many people commenting about continued issues to this day but I have not seen it in a while.
@@JerrySchulze I don’t recall if you edit with Premiere, but many in the forums - including myself - have been experiencing issues with Premiere Pro’s UI lagging while using existing external monitors. Resizing Premiere’s panels, changing effects settings, etc. have been a headache on external monitors but not on the built-in Retina XDR displays on the M1 (Pro/Max) MBPs.
Finally, a guy who gets it. Yes I have the Studio Display and it is gorgeous. I do a lot of color correcting and I’m completely satisfied with this monitor. But of course it’s also connected to my Mac Studio ultra… the combo is unbeatable. I looked at everybody else’s monitor on the planet and they’re all plastic crap. Unless you can’t afford it there’s no reason in the world not to get this monitor. I’ve never even listen to the speakers… the minute I turned it on for the first time I literally shut the speakers off because I have a real Soundsystem. I don’t even know what they sound like and I don’t even care.
6 Pros != worth it. As you are talking about features without referencing the price. Dell right now has a good quality 4k 27" for less than the price of Apple's height adjustment stand, and it even turns on instantly. Enough said!

Saw it in the store today... Price is too high. It doesn't have as solid a base as I anticipated (e.g., it can slide around easily) and it should have been 32" not the same 27" as the Imac. To me it's kind of an easy pass especially at that price.
It’s a pro tool. At 5k it’s optimised for 27 in. For 32 in there is a rather more expensive Apple version called Pro Display XDR and 6k. It’s 3 times the price and then you need a stand. It’s brighter than an iMac 27 and designed for pro AV, design and photo workflows where time and effort is money. Using a pair is still cheaper than the 32 in. I’ve ordered one to work alongside my MBP16 i9 2019 model. I though a long time about it and considered top Dells but ultimately the colour match and workflow with other Apple gear, including iPhone 13 pro and iPad Pro keeps it all consistent and integrated. Given it cost half as much as my Canon 5D and less than a pro Canon lens, the colour accuracy out of the box is a key feature. It will work alongside my trusty Dell 2715Q which is still one of the best 4k pro screens of the past decade but the Apple is much brighter. I’ve ordered the nano glass, as I wear glasses and hate high reflection levels on sunny days. The standard glass in pretty good even in a fluorescent light situation but you need to tilt it slightly downwards. I’ll get back and add my additional comments after I bed it in later this week. To me nano glass is a better investment than an up and down stand as I have 2 excellent glass riser stands that I can store my Apple and PC keyboards under, as my desk is quite small at 1.2 by 0.7m as I recall.
Apple has listed the compatible Macs on its website that can handle the 5K resolution. However, there are even more Macs that you can connect to the Studio Display. For example the cylinder Mac Pro (2013). This Mac has Thunderbolt 2 ports, so the maximum resolution is 4K. You can also connect this Mac with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 bidirectional adapter plus a Thunderbolt 2 cable of 0.5 m. or 2.00 m. Because the Studio Display has a 5K resolution, you can scale the resolution nicely to 2560x1440 ppi. There are also MacBook Pros with Thunderbolt 2 ports. You can also connect them in the same way. And according to Apple's website, it already works with MacOS Sierra. So you don't need to install the latest MacOS Monterey if you don't already want to.
Here is the problem that I found , when connected to m1 max mbp. The fan never stop unless you unplug the tb4 cable … fan-on while sleep doesn’t make any sense … lol

Your points are the reason I ordered one, but I still feel like it's not a great value. I was especially annoyed to pay the extra $400 for the height-adjustable stand. It'll be a good monitor for my needs, but I would have been happier to pay $1500, instead of $2000.
I can’t help but feel like apple is either not putting enough effort in supporting other displays, or maybe even deliberately making the experience on non apple displays worse. I had problems with hdmi displays before that just wouldn’t wake up in time before the Mac mini went back to sleep, resulting in me having to keep hitting keys on the keyboard until the display woke up. It took up to a minute. Never had this problem on any other OS. At first I thought something was broken. A hdmi to usb-c adapter somehow kinda fixed the issue. But none of my displays respond quite as fast as the studio display, even on other machines, so that’s that.
I am not really a potential customer for this monitor and that is fine. Not everything is for everyone. I have no doubt it will find many people who want it and fall in love with it. What I found very weird was that the power cable was firmly attached to the monitor, I found that yesterday. I kid you not, I KID YOU NOT, I had an issue with it last night when I went to bed. I literally started thinking of it and I couldn't breathe. It felt like a panic attack, claustrophobia or something. Which makes no sense! I don't even have the monitor! lol. The lack of power button feels weird, but I guess for most people it won't matter. Still weird. Anyway, good video man.
I really like the video overall. But I can’t overcome the fact that there are actual engineers who were put on task to make a non-detachable cable and stand. That’s just bad design in my opinion
I can buy a Studio Display and Mac Studio for $3500 that blows away the old $4999 iMac Pro. I love that I can use multiple Macs with this Monitor too. Glad I bought one!
short answer unless you are a hardcore Apple fan go for it but if you are not there are other options for you with higher brightness hdr and better display quality and with a far faster response rate

Why not just buy a 24 inch iMac and just use Universal Control vs just getting a monitor. Also why don't they install Apple TV and add a remote to this monitor, it has the hardware?
Hi Jerry, I’m coming from an iMac 5k to a new Mac Studio M1Max. I feel I’ve our grown the 27 screen for video editing and graphic design (my job). Im looking at the BenQ PD3220u that you raved about. The studio display seems such a lot of money for no real change in experience from my old iMac - what are your thoughts please?
It’s disappointing that Apple insists on 27inch, most people want bigger. I think Apple should revise down the price of its now “old tech” XDR display to give users the option of the bigger screen size at a price point which is not insane. In Australia the pro XDR with the stand will set you back about $10,000!
As the video told, 27” is perfect for 5K otherwise it would be blurry, scaled, not perfect. 27” is incredible in 5K and it is a great side for work and fun.
Somebody in our coworking space got it and the first thing I noticed was the speed of connecting. You are the first person I heard mentioning it. Overall the best design, build quality, picture, sound, connectivity and integration in the ecosystem. No idea why people are hating it. Will get one and be happy for 10+ years.
The bezels/ borders wasn’t an oversight. It was made that way for a reason. It improves your visual accuracy when reviewing work close to the edge, vs your vision competing to “see” to what’s behind the monitor when reviewing. It’s creates a set border that your vision can use to guide its focus when reviewing. Yes aesthetically the bezels could be thinner… but for a workflow I’m happy they kept the bezels, ex: print work. Love the studio display. Still have 5 30 inch cinemas and 8 thunderbolt displays to replace 😅, if and when they die. You get what you pay for.
Absolutely agreed. The "thin bezel" crowd are a bit thick in my book, and simply overlook "current style" for practicality. I'm a photographer, and those deep black bezels give me some reference on the periphery.

Those are exactly what my reasons were! I guess for a lot of folks small things like these don't really bother, but monitor not switching on instantly or Color grading on the screen is super important for me and my work.
The way I look at this display, it should have gone one of two ways. If it HAD to be $1,600, they absolutely have no excuse in not giving this display dimming zones, better colors, Face ID, and way slimmer bezels. However if they really wanted to give us only what they did, that’s totally fine, it shouldn’t have been more than $1,300. Especially since this and the Mac studio are a duo intended to replace the 27” iMac, and together they can’t be cheaper than $3,600.
Apple’s ultimate advantage here is the fact that they have almost no competition in this specific monitor type.
I’m not as mad as most people, but there’s just no way to look at this without knowing that it should have done more, or been cheaper.
The color calibration, accuracy and reference modes are the best in the industry.
No external monitor under 3k has local dimming zones. Mini Led is expensive.
The studio display is replacing the high-end iMac and iMac Pro. The entry-level mac mini and the studio display is replacement for the iMac currently. Until there's a consumer display based on the 24in iMac.
Also the cheapest 5k monitor is 1300. Why would Apple’s cost the same when it's better in every way?

Because that "cheapest 5k monitor" is 6 years old, and likely only still has that price point because it was partially owned by apple and they never drop their prices.
The new MacBooks start at $2,000 and have everything you just described in the display, plus some. And those laptops have to worry about keyboards and high-end computer chips and trackpads and speakers and yadayadayada. Point is, we know they could absolutely add those features to this for this price since this is ONLY a display.
For reference, this is the exact panel ripped from the old 27" iMac, but that started for only $200 more, and is SEVERAL years old. So by your logic, all the computing power in the 27" iMac is only only worth $200 at starting price?
No, of course not, because they're upcharging like crazy for this knowing that they've tapped into a niche market that is hard to compare with, causing people like you to defend it tirelessly.
5k monitors are a niche, not necessarily a luxury, so of course its hard to compare to other displays: because they don't exist. that's why apple did this. So that they couldn't be compared and blamed for making a seriously overpriced monitor.
It may be one of the only of it's kind, but that doesn't make it a good deal at all.

Your MacBook and Studio Display comparison falls apart quickly under inspection. The MacBooks have 14in an 16in display that are around 3k in resoultion. Obviously a display that is bigger (using more materials and larger tooling) and is higher resolution will cost more. The Studio Display is also brighter under normal conditions as the peak brightness for Mini-Led only applies to watching HDR content. The Studio Display also has a processor in it because it needs something to do the smart features as well as manage thermals, ports etc and it also has speakers even better than the 16in Pro. So in terms of features and price they are pretty close.
As for the pricing compared to the older iMac, Apple’s all-in-ones are always cheaper than buying separate devices to use together. It’s weird to focus on the age of the panel. 4k panels are older than 5k ones are you mad that you can still higher quality ones for more?

You can argue any after 720p is an unnecessary and a luxury. 5k has 50% more pixels and is notably more sharp on a display that’s 27in. Now if we are talking about a display that’s 22-24in 4k could work because of the higher pixel density.
@@chidorirasenganz You can throw all the words and numbers around to justify the MacBook display argument all you want, but there's simply no way that a screen less than twice the size of both MacBooks should have a MUCH cheaper panel, no computing capabilities, no keyboards or laptop components, and still nearly cost as much.
Concerning the agreement between Apple and LG with the Ultrafine, you have no idea what the possible agreement is. Apple could very well have product profits at stake. The LG Ultrafine is one of the only external displays that was being sold officially on the Apple website, so I'm fairly confident Apple didn't do that just as a charity to support LG. There's a very good chance they have profit shares for sales on the device, and therefore likely have a say on when or if it goes on sale.
As far as the Processor in the display is concerned, it's an A13, Not even relatively close to the M1 Pro and Max chips in the computers: either in price-to-produce or power. It's a 3 year old chip that has nearly no purpose in the display. Don't believe me? Try watching most reviews on this and figure out for yourself how unnecessary the chip is. Center stage (one of the display "features") is something that should be given to the devices hooked up to the display - Like iPads and Macs - and for many, it already is. You could make some sort of an argument in behalf of the chip if perhaps it allowed windows and non-Apple computers to have features like center stage without the OG operating system, but NO. It doesn't. It's a limp, regular idle monitor once connected to anything besides a Mac/iPad. So, what's the point? Those devices already provide those exclusive features, period. It never has been, and never should be up to the display to add those features.
And don't give me some "iT hAs wEbCaM ImAgE pRoCeSsInG" bs about this. reviews have already shown that it has an awful camera, just as bad as monitors without a chip, and we've seen hundreds of devices have a webcam without a processor to support.
My point is simple: The chip is completely unnecessary, no matter how some people defend it. Our history of monitors and other tech proves it. If it was doing something useful and revolutionary for the display that hasn't been done before, then fine, it makes sense. But it doesn't. It doesn't even have things like FaceID, which could be argued to be the only real use out of a processor in the display.
Perhaps in the future they'll update the display chip software and give it some great new features, but they don't right now, and you can't justify a product based off of speculation of a potential future software update.
And if the chip is your excuse for why this costs so much, then you're doing exactly what they wanted you to do by getting blinded by that aspect.
As for your argument on the age of displays, are you kidding? new 4k displays and updates to previous 4k displays are happening yearly. The "idea" of 4k displays isn't new, duh, but the panels, colors and build of the computers is getting upgraded regularly on many (if not most) popular 4k displays.
Ya know why LG hasn't upgraded their 5k display in so long? IT'S BECAUSE IT HAS NO COMPETITION, so they CAN get lazy. Which is my entire point about the actually value of what this display offers.
Lastly, your comparison to 720p vs 5k displays for what's a "luxury" item is the goofiest thing I've heard you argue yet. The difference between 720p to 4k is MASSIVE (hence 4k being the new industry standard) whereas 4k - 5k is a relatively menial difference. Literally even professional tech reviewers like Marques Brownlee even admit there's a very small difference.
So yes, 4k vs 5k is more of a niche, and an unnecessary upgrade - compared to 720p vs 4k being a luxury. Your argument falls short.

The display has computing abilities hence where the smart feature come from. We don’t know if won’t be able to run additional features in the future like a tvOS but it’s already bringing center stage to Macs (which have never had it) as well as spatial audio etc. Displays have to have a logic board so unless your argument is that they should have put in an older A series Im not sure what point you are making.
Apple no longer sells the LG on their site with the release of their Studio Display. While I’m sure they get a cut of what is sold on the store, they don’t “own” the product or company lol
The pricing between the chips I think is no more than 30$. I seen reviews of the display lol I’ve also seen the same sensor work in the iPad. It’s not hard to work out the webcam will be good. In fact in a number of reviews and live streams it looked fine so it’s obviously not regular issue.
Why shouldn’t a display add features? Or handle processing? There’s no logical reason not to.
Every webcam has a ISP so I’m not sure what you meant webcams not having a processor.
The chip isn’t the main reason for the price but for some reason you are unable to remember why. Size, Resolution, Build quality, Ports are the main ones.
You still have named a reason why the panel needs an upgrade. It already has better color calibration and color gamut support than most monitors out atm. Mini Led will be on the new Pro Display and if they do high refresh (I doubt it at 6k) that will go to the Pro display as well. No none Pro Apple product has gotten Promotion or MiniLED.
720p compared to 4k sounds goofy to you because you don’t know how much more resolution 5k is. To me you sound equally as goofy. It’s 50% more pixels far from a menial difference. Especially at 27in 4k is sub 200 ppi. You can argue any upgrade is unnecessary. Just depends if its worth it to you to upgrade to it.
I have ordered the Mac Studio and the display will follow shortly as soon as my budget allows. A great display that I have been waiting for a long time.
It's perfectly valid to complain that the display is too expensive. I still ordered one because it's the best build quality and display quality of pretty much any desktop monitor for less than $2K. Apple is not trying to build a "budget" option and they seem to be okay with it being a fairly niche product. It has a limited audience which is mostly by design. The number one complaint I have seen is the webcam. I've used it and honestly don't care. Web cam quality does not matter in the least to me. I use it for video conferencing while working at home and all that matters is that it has a webcam, not how good the webcam is.

I agree the people that complain about the price not being affordable are the same people that buy a new iPhone every year for the last 10 years.
Its $300 more expensive than the LG 5K which apparently is fairly priced, so with the build quality and other features of the Studio Display, I would say that it too is fairly priced.

I grabbed one before watching this or any other video because of the 6 reasons you detailed. I wasn’t sure, but I was confident the things that matter to me would be well worth the price tag.

Hello Jerry! Really like the video! Couldn’t agree more! I have a Mac Studio display with height adjustment and nano-textured glass and absolutely LOVE it! Never had a retina Mac display before and it continues to wow me every time I use it. Very grateful to be able to afford one these days. Replaced a late 2013 27” iMac which is now ‘vintage’. Still love that iMac though, but am no longer using it as I now have a Mac Studio with 2TB drive and otherwise the base model.

The display is awesome, I have seen one and would get it for any of my Mac setups if I did not have an M1 iMac in blue. You can't get anything like it with 5k..perfect pairing for MacBooks, Mac mini, or of course studio..people will complain about anything no matter how good it is.
This video sold me on upgrading. I currently use a 27inch 4K Samsung display with no mic, speakers, or webcam which I am going to start needing more and more (AirPods aren't cutting it) but I cannot stand wires all over my desk. This display and my MacBook Pro 14 will help clean up my desk and keep it free of clutter.

Thank you for your assessment. We finally realized how slow it takes other monitors to wake up from sleep mode. That’s why we stopped using our 2009 Mac Pro.

I think the bezel size is good. Every other monitor has thin side bezels but the has a chin and or forehead. I prefer an even bezel all around.

To the senses, black is essentially an "invisible" colour. I have a 2017 27" iMac, and I don't notice the bezels. I would argue that a bezel-less monitor would clash more with a coloured wall or background
I love my studio display for all the reasons you mentioned, plus centre stage, which has solved a problem I’ve had with all of my other displays. I like to have the middle of the screen just below eye level and without centre state, Zoom and Teams put my head down at the bottom of the screen. With center stage, I’m always in the right place. Finally, I can’t be the only person who is wondering what other things have been planned for that A13 Bionic chip in the display. I have to imagine they have more things planned for this display than what they’re talking about now.
Thanks Jerry - great Vlog! But honestly - do you have any thoughts as to why Apple would not have just thinned the bezels into 2022 standards? I mean is there something in their buying loop or preferred Vendors package that was obtained "cheaper" to make this . . . mistake . . . worthwhile. Chuckle all you want - but - beefy bezels are preventing me from making the Studio purchase at this time. Why - because - to me - aesthetics really matter. Why - because - in a way - that is what makes me a Mac user!
My guess is the way this panel works the backlighting needs the bigger bezels.
1. Design - I agree it’s strongest side
2. Stand design nice but extra cost to have some flexibility
3. 5k is a pro and con - 4k 27” you push few inches and get same fidelity as this one making it a dubious pro - also considering 5k limitation of not having faster refresh its more of a con than pro. Lack of hdr will keep professional creatives away.
4. Camera is not needed when you have MacBook, nor mics, nor speakers - especially if you use headset.
All in all this screen is for people wanting nicely built monitor with ok spec.
5. Instant wake is nice indeed.
6. Single cable is good but many will have a dock anyway by now.

The last point is the most overlooked one. Well done!
The Apple Studio Display is a 600 nits monitor that offers an adequate peak brightness for grading HDR. (And far more than adequate for photography.) Because it has no type of local dimming it cannot reproduce dark details hence it’s low 1200:1 contrast ratio. For non-professional HDR grading in a normally lit room the darkest shades will be washed-out thereby limiting viewable contrast. Thus, the Studio Display will likely be acceptable. The 60Hz refresh rate is exactly what it should be for video editing as is the P3 colorspace. The power cord is perfect to plug into a power strip--and it can be removed. The name "studio" is clearly saying the display is for content creation--so gammers simply move on.
Not to mention that it is not possible to drive 5K at 120HZ over thunderbolt because of bandwidth limitations.

Was going to purchase the 27 inch Studio Monitor to make it a KISS Apple solution. 27-inch is the sweet spot I am looking for. Thing was unlike the MacBook Air I purchased could not order/purchase the Studio Display for store delivery. So I purchased a 27" LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim USB-C Monitor Widescreen LED IPS LCD w/ Webcam - Black - 27MD5KA-B which Apple was selling in in the past in its stores.
Love the design of both the Apple Studio Display, and the LG 27MD5KA-B. Looks like it is going to take a few more seconds to turn on. Thing was when I was little I would wake up on a Saturday morning go into the front room and turn on the TV. I would then go into the kitchen to get my cereal and milk and then go back into the front room. If I was lucky the black and white tube TV may have warmed up enough for me to see a clearer image.
So waiting a few seconds for a monitor, or any other device to turn on is not an issue for this normal. My late mother always told me "Patience is a virtue".

The screen speed is 60hz so you may have input lag problems with some games.
I love mine. I mainly use it for Adobe Apps. I love my little MacBook Pro but got tired of watching the beachball spinning around. This machine is awesome, and looks totally cool on the desk. I don’t like the cheap plastic look, this is better.
I have no need for webcam, internal speakers (or mic really) but it still didn't stop me buying two for my new setup. Same as you Jerry, I'd been waiting years for Apple to disconnect the display from the computer in this segment. I can't afford either the MacPro or the XDR display so the Mac Studio and Studio Display really ticked the boxes for me and I couldn't be happier with them ☺

I drove 6 hours (three hours each way) on Friday to pick one of these puppies from the nearest Apple Store. I couldn’t be happier with my choice. Would I have preferred to pay half as much for it? Sure. Am I sorry that I paid what Apple is asking? Not in the least. It’s a great display with gorgeous colors and crisp text. It’s well-designed, pretty to look at, and plays nicely with my Mac. Drawbacks: It doesn’t work with USB-C cables, even Apple-branded ones, to connect the display to my Mac. It doesn’t have an HDMI port, so I really can’t connect my PS 5 or Apple TV to it. But it does such a nice job of working with my M1 Pro MBP that I wouldn’t trade it for a different monitor with these features unless it worked as seamlessly-which I gather no other 5K display does.

@@whoami6821 I'm not sure. I had planned on trying a USB-C to HDMI cable I already have. But if an Apple-branded USB-C to USB-C cable running from an M1 Pro MBP to the ASD doesn't work, I'm sure an HDMI to USB-C cable won't. It would have to be HDMI to Thunderbolt and I don't have one of those kicking around (do they even make them??).

It's OK - the main issue I have with it is the premium price - in Australia these are AU $2500 for a 60hz monitor sure they are calibrated - so is every other studio monitor and I don't care for the speakers and web cam stuff which are just recycled parts from the iMac/ iPhone anyway. Not to say these are not a good idea - they just try to justify the price by adding these parts in to what is supposed to be a studio monitor for semi pros and pros alike who don't need the full HDR display

My studio display broke after 3 days of use... was very disappointed. But i did love it a lot.

You sold me on this. Your reasons are exactly what I suffer from my current ultra wide monitor.
I have a BenQ SW321C 32 inch display which has excellent color accuracy out of the box (perhaps the best available at the $2,000 price point), and it has hardware calibration, which is more accurate (and convenient) than software calibration. Also, my display reproduces 99 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, which is superior to your Studio Display. This is not to say that your monitor isn't excellent; however, if you want the best display for professional photographers (at $2,000 or less) and have no need for the bells and whistles of the Study Display (e.g., speakers and camera), you should check out the BenQ offerings.
(Also, I like the removable power cord.)

I am a typical apple fan, every digital product is from Apple. Recently, I bought a Studio display to hook up my MacBook pro for my design work. My MacBook pro(bought it in 2021 M1) doesn't connect with Studio Display very well, the "allow to connect" window flashes for a sec and disappeared. I tried restarting the computer and reconnecting the cable multiple times. It finally connected, but not even lasted an hour, the display went black and never connect again. I would understand if I tried to connect with a window system laptop might rise the compatible issues, but mine is new model MacBook Pro. It was a big let down. I don't know if I've got the defeated product. I wonder if anyone else has the same issue like me.
I think you have a defective product and would do a return or exchange if you can. I Looooove my studio display and no issues. Good luck!

Does it have any physical buttons on it? What happens when you plug it in to a Windows or Linux computer? Does the sound work? Can you adjust brightness/color?

The only thing I’m worried about is the color accuracy. I edit in premiere pro and that uses the rec709 gamut. There’s an option in the studio’s preferences to switch to that, but is it *really* accurate to the color gamut?
Spot on. The instant-waking-up feature is one of the main advantages of apple displays. It drives me nuts my current 5-seconds-delay “featured” by my LG 38 ultrawide display. Getting the Apple studio for sure. Thanks for your clean cut review 🙏🏼 ✊🏼

Great video! Finally got my Mac Studio Display two days ago! Took a while since I orderd it late March. But I am speechless! Was so tempted to cancel because it was taking so long and used our 4K TV for a display for the Mac Studio I ordered to go with it. Got both the height-adjustable stand and nano-textured glass. I just watched your Eve review prior to watching this video. I found both very helpful. Sadly, I find most of the people doing the Studio Display reviews (good or bad) aren't really comparing it to anything else. I think a better way to review this monitor is based on how it is going to be used. It seems like it is a great monitor for people doing photography and video editing. I'm not really sure if it is or is not a good choice for someone primarily doing web browsing or working on documents. Thoughts?
First, I will say that YES, this is a fantastic display for everyday computing, not matter how big or small. You know this because its very similar to the 27" iMac and even the 24" iMac displays. Second, the most difficult part when comparing this to other displays is that there just simply are not any displays that offer similar specs except for the LG ultrafine 5k. Every other display at 27" is 4k or 1440p. Some are brighter than others, some have higher refresh rate, some have crappy 2w speakers built in but none of them have 5k.....(and the 5k 2k displays and similar are not the same they are not high DPI with over 200PPI).
So it really is difficult to compare to others. This is sharper than all other displays. This will most likely work better than other displays with your Mac. This will have good speakers built in. This has a better overall consistency, in my opinion than the others. If you are comparing against a $300 4k display you have to decide what is important to you.
Eve Spectrum vs Studio Display, which one do you choose? I like both but I am indecisive about these two. Studio Display definitely has better build quality as well as customer service than Eve’s. But the Spectrum has 4k 144hz and has better windows support and obviously much cheaper. I really want to hear what you would choose between these two. Also do you think it’s a good idea to wait for a “Studio Display pro”, or other 4k 144hz monitors (without the ugly look designed for gamers)?

I have both. I thought EVE was fantastic until Studio Display arrived. I bought a standard glass version, and I have to say colors, contrast, sharpness looks much better on Studio Display. I was surprised how much of a jump is a 5K from 4K. Built quality and design are on another level. I also use it with a PC with DP->Thunderbolt cable. While I miss gsync, I must say that scaling and picture quality on Studio Display is much better. 1440p looks really good on a 5K display since 5K it’s precisely 2x1440p. For gaming, I now have three usable resolutions 1440p, 4K, and 5K. The only thing to keep in mind is that there is no way to adjust brightness on a PC. Also, the Studio display wakes up way quicker than EVE and is 100% reliable on both platforms, which is not something I can tell about EVE. I have 105 firmware on EVE, and I’m still struggling with Mac compatibility and HDR on PC.

@@jiajun5984 I'm a UI Designer, so I don't think I will be objective in this matter😄 But for me definitely, 5K and much better colors are way more significant upgrades than 144Hz. I tried calibrating EVE, but it's nowhere near Studio Display. Also, I've been using EVE for quite some time, and I just put it back in the box the second day I got Studio Display and never thought a second about the high refresh rate. The only reason to get EVE is if you have a PC and you want to prioritize games. Then I think EVE's gsync/freesync is even a bigger upgrade than a high refresh rate. For example, I had to lock globally vsync in nVidia settings to fix flickering in Elden Ring; it probably tried to use a variable refresh rate. I don't play competitive multiplayer, so most games I lock on 60fps, and then it doesn't matter if you have 60Hz or 144Hz. To benefit from 120-144Hz, you need to have a PC to produce 120-144fps, but you probably know that.
That's a great and informing video. I've been using the Dell U2720Q for 6 months now and It is a really good monitor. It's 4k with type c connection and charging my mac at 90W. It has a lot of good ways too, but you have to get desk speakers, webcam, and all these extra accessories are messing up the aesthetic. It is not as clean as the studio display after all. Also It is not created to use it with MacOS and the speed of the studio display is mind blowing comparing to my monitor. I really liked the idea of studio display and it might be worth it.

IMHO the best "stand" option is the $100 Amazon Basics VESA arm. It has pivot (unlike the Apple stands) and will unveil another feature of the display: Automatic pivot detection. It's fast, requires no settings or drivers.
I wish they would make a monitor without camera or speakers .. its just not needed these days in a desktop set-up and makes the monitor too expensive for no good reason other than they added stuff I don't want or need . Great review through
Two biggest problems I have with this display is lackluster basic stand, while height adjustable should've been the basic one and lack or second input. Latter could've been easily remedied by at least offering a standalone KVM switch. I would even pay a few hundred bucks for it. But it is what it is. A 2000$ display (because tilt only model sucks and practically unusable and VESA mount option on it is meh) with a single input. So at the end I guess the inadequate price is what I have the biggest issue with.

Can you comment on noise or heat? I heard the monitor gets warm.
No noise, no heat. If you put your ear to the top in the right spot you can feel some air flow.
@@JerrySchulze Thanks, those were my only concerns. The price is steep, but the "experience" of this monitor is far above any other options. I'm no apple snob but I learned after many expensive lessons not to trust people about sound or computers. The less friction the better,
life hacks: Buy a good chair and bed, tailer your clothes, moisturize and reduce computer/device friction. All those are good investments, imo. Save money in other areas.
Is that wake time consistent, also after longer periods of sleep and maybe even power off?

I went with another manufacturer display, due to price, when I recently upgraded my 2015 iMac. I ended up returning it and ordering the studio display. I couldn’t be happier and it seems like it’s built to last for quite some time. Probably through one or two desktop upgrades without having to get new peripherals. One thing I don’t like is sleep mode either on the display or, in my instance, a docked MacBook Pro. I have heard the Mac studio has the same issue. It’s the usb c hub on the display. It toggles power off/on all day to any device plugged into the hub while sleeping. I thought it may be “find my” but all those power options have been disabled. It’s super annoying and even harmful if you have an external HD or device with a in line usb power lcd screen/button. It constantly turns off and on even though the display and desktop are in sleep mode. Other users are also reporting the issue.
give me an m1 max iMac 5k display, 120hz in 27" or 32" for $1999, all the ports we expect and with the removeable power cable and we are golden.

You can choose that by holding option and selecting the scaled radial. Its not a native resolution so it is not as sharp.
@@JerrySchulze Thanks a lot. Is there any option on MacOS to scale a native resolution? In PC you can choose recommended/native resolution and scale it to 125%, 150%, 200% without loosing qualuity. Sorry to be nudnik, but it is very important to me because I really think to make a switch from PC to Mac.

If you need to connect to windows computers sometimes then Eizo may be better.

This display would be dope (to me) if it had OLED/MiniLED, ProMotion, and a better Webcam. Also the icing on the cake would be if the A13 in the Display allowed the display to run TVOS or offer Airplay. But it doesn't. So while the build quality looks excellent, at $1600, this isn't the display for me.
It’s priced as if it has at least Promotion but it doesn’t. Really feel like it’s worth $1000.

All of your wish points would be nice with the exception of TvOS and Airplay which I'll comment on later.
Regarding OLED/MiniLED/ProMotion you have to remember we're talkng about Apple where nothing is cheap. If you think $1599 is expensive then imagine what the display would cost with OLED/MiniLED (deeper blacks) and /ProMotion (120Hz). IMO you'd be approaching $3.5K for a base model. Hopefully, Apple will deliver on their promise to improve the WebCam with an update.
Airplay is not needed in a display. Any audio source played through the Studio Display's speakers is streamed via the internet or an external device such as an external HD. Both sources rely on a MacBook, MacMini or Mac Studio as the controller which has the requisite internet connection and/or software.
TvOS IMO will never be seen in a display. TvOS requires and internet connection to an Apple server. Displays (as designed by Apple) are just a means to view content sent to them via an external device. They are not tended to act as autonomous units.
@@ajtrek3873 when I speak of airplay I don’t just mean audio, I also mean video just like on the Apple TV. Would be a great video conferencing solution. Although as of macOS 12.0, the mac can act as an airplay server and accept airplay video…so a Mac connected to the studio display would implement what I’m talking about.
Regarding your point about tvOS will never be in a display, I never expected a display to run iOS 15.4 with an a13 either. But A display with an a13 now exists, and the a13 is more powerful than the a12 in the 4K Apple TV. Apparently, the studio display also has 64 GB of storage, the same as the Apple TV. Therefore, given the hardware choices of apple, I don’t think it’s a stretch of the imagination to see how tvos or displayOS could be implemented in a display.
Buying the Studio Display is like buying their Pro Stand + iMac Display. The height adjustable one look very similar to the Pro Stand and it costs $1000 plus $1000 for the monitor. The base version stand cost $600 plus $1000 monitor.
The biggest issue I have is that you have to buy what is essentially an iPhone 11 just to get a monitor. It inflates the price when that cost could go towards making a better monitor. It's not that it's a bad device, it's a bad price for a monitor.
I think it's telling that you said yourself in the video that if you're gonna be doing conference calls you'd probably use a different device regardless of the camera quality.
I am struggling to choose between 4K 144hz or 5K 60hz... especially now Eve Spectrum also has glossy to choose from.

Curious, how does the display audio compare to the HomePod mini stereo pair audio quality for everyday use? These are the speakers to most likely remain on my desk with the monitor and they are easily used as Mac speakers - the video sync issues seem to have been fixed over time. Nothing seems to be published comparing them.
That's a really good question. I have never bought or even used HomePods so not really sure. May be a good experiment.

Great overview as always! Personally I went with the Dell Ultrasharp USB Hub for about $600 as I can’t justify the additional $1,000 price tag for the monitor in my workflow. At the moment I’d rather put that money towards a secondary computer/iPad Pro to increase my general productivity. But then again I’m not a video editor (I’m a coder/excel/Google sheets enthusiast) so my workflow isn’t maximized by the display features. Keep up the great videos!

honestly, I havnt had any issues with any monitors I have tested since getting the new MacBook Pros and before that I had switched back to my 27" iMac. There are still many people commenting about continued issues to this day but I have not seen it in a while.
@@JerrySchulze I don’t recall if you edit with Premiere, but many in the forums - including myself - have been experiencing issues with Premiere Pro’s UI lagging while using existing external monitors. Resizing Premiere’s panels, changing effects settings, etc. have been a headache on external monitors but not on the built-in Retina XDR displays on the M1 (Pro/Max) MBPs.
Finally, a guy who gets it. Yes I have the Studio Display and it is gorgeous. I do a lot of color correcting and I’m completely satisfied with this monitor. But of course it’s also connected to my Mac Studio ultra… the combo is unbeatable. I looked at everybody else’s monitor on the planet and they’re all plastic crap. Unless you can’t afford it there’s no reason in the world not to get this monitor. I’ve never even listen to the speakers… the minute I turned it on for the first time I literally shut the speakers off because I have a real Soundsystem. I don’t even know what they sound like and I don’t even care.
6 Pros != worth it. As you are talking about features without referencing the price. Dell right now has a good quality 4k 27" for less than the price of Apple's height adjustment stand, and it even turns on instantly.

Saw it in the store today... Price is too high. It doesn't have as solid a base as I anticipated (e.g., it can slide around easily) and it should have been 32" not the same 27" as the Imac. To me it's kind of an easy pass especially at that price.
It’s a pro tool. At 5k it’s optimised for 27 in. For 32 in there is a rather more expensive Apple version called Pro Display XDR and 6k. It’s 3 times the price and then you need a stand. It’s brighter than an iMac 27 and designed for pro AV, design and photo workflows where time and effort is money. Using a pair is still cheaper than the 32 in.
I’ve ordered one to work alongside my MBP16 i9 2019 model. I though a long time about it and considered top Dells but ultimately the colour match and workflow with other Apple gear, including iPhone 13 pro and iPad Pro keeps it all consistent and integrated.
Given it cost half as much as my Canon 5D and less than a pro Canon lens, the colour accuracy out of the box is a key feature. It will work alongside my trusty Dell 2715Q which is still one of the best 4k pro screens of the past decade but the Apple is much brighter.
I’ve ordered the nano glass, as I wear glasses and hate high reflection levels on sunny days.
The standard glass in pretty good even in a fluorescent light situation but you need to tilt it slightly downwards. I’ll get back and add my additional comments after I bed it in later this week. To me nano glass is a better investment than an up and down stand as I have 2 excellent glass riser stands that I can store my Apple and PC keyboards under, as my desk is quite small at 1.2 by 0.7m as I recall.

3:31, that's the best argument for a 5k 27 inch.
Apple has listed the compatible Macs on its website that can handle the 5K resolution. However, there are even more Macs that you can connect to the Studio Display. For example the cylinder Mac Pro (2013). This Mac has Thunderbolt 2 ports, so the maximum resolution is 4K. You can also connect this Mac with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 bidirectional adapter plus a Thunderbolt 2 cable of 0.5 m. or 2.00 m. Because the Studio Display has a 5K resolution, you can scale the resolution nicely to 2560x1440 ppi. There are also MacBook Pros with Thunderbolt 2 ports. You can also connect them in the same way. And according to Apple's website, it already works with MacOS Sierra. So you don't need to install the latest MacOS Monterey if you don't already want to.
Apple displays are color accurate out of the box. I profile my monitors and there isn't much change when I do
Here is the problem that I found , when connected to m1 max mbp. The fan never stop unless you unplug the tb4 cable … fan-on while sleep doesn’t make any sense … lol

So it stays on for a minute or 2 after putting Mac Studio to sleep then the fans stop.

Your points are the reason I ordered one, but I still feel like it's not a great value. I was especially annoyed to pay the extra $400 for the height-adjustable stand. It'll be a good monitor for my needs, but I would have been happier to pay $1500, instead of $2000.

you can but its tough I guess. who cares though you can't use without power any way. If it get broke or chewed on then it matters.
I can’t help but feel like apple is either not putting enough effort in supporting other displays, or maybe even deliberately making the experience on non apple displays worse. I had problems with hdmi displays before that just wouldn’t wake up in time before the Mac mini went back to sleep, resulting in me having to keep hitting keys on the keyboard until the display woke up. It took up to a minute. Never had this problem on any other OS. At first I thought something was broken. A hdmi to usb-c adapter somehow kinda fixed the issue.
But none of my displays respond quite as fast as the studio display, even on other machines, so that’s that.
Can you connect the display to a console?
I tried a Nintendo switch using an active hdmi to usb-c and did not work for me.

I am not really a potential customer for this monitor and that is fine. Not everything is for everyone. I have no doubt it will find many people who want it and fall in love with it.
What I found very weird was that the power cable was firmly attached to the monitor, I found that yesterday. I kid you not, I KID YOU NOT, I had an issue with it last night when I went to bed. I literally started thinking of it and I couldn't breathe. It felt like a panic attack, claustrophobia or something. Which makes no sense! I don't even have the monitor! lol.
The lack of power button feels weird, but I guess for most people it won't matter. Still weird.

I really like the video overall. But I can’t overcome the fact that there are actual engineers who were put on task to make a non-detachable cable and stand. That’s just bad design in my opinion

I can buy a Studio Display and Mac Studio for $3500 that blows away the old $4999 iMac Pro. I love that I can use multiple Macs with this Monitor too. Glad I bought one!
short answer unless you are a hardcore Apple fan go for it but if you are not there are other options for you with higher brightness hdr and better display quality and with a far faster response rate

@@alopeztorres well there are Samsung monitor that are 4K with way higher brightness they might not be 5k but guess what they have hdmi and display port that’s what I said unless you are Apple hardcore fan you will find this attractive if you are anyone else you are better off with another brand and guess what the Samsung models have better refresh rate and response rate being 1/3 the price
Why not just buy a 24 inch iMac and just use Universal Control vs just getting a monitor. Also why don't they install Apple TV and add a remote to this monitor, it has the hardware?

Hi Jerry, I’m coming from an iMac 5k to a new Mac Studio M1Max. I feel I’ve our grown the 27 screen for video editing and graphic design (my job). Im looking at the BenQ PD3220u that you raved about. The studio display seems such a lot of money for no real change in experience from my old iMac - what are your thoughts please?

It’s disappointing that Apple insists on 27inch, most people want bigger. I think Apple should revise down the price of its now “old tech” XDR display to give users the option of the bigger screen size at a price point which is not insane. In Australia the pro XDR with the stand will set you back about $10,000!
As the video told, 27” is perfect for 5K otherwise it would be blurry, scaled, not perfect. 27” is incredible in 5K and it is a great side for work and fun.
