- PART 2
So, the soft, thick and sticky factory Gibson nitro lacquer is completely removed and now I can start painting with varnishes and dyes. For this project, I'll be using lacquers and stains from Nitrolac, a company that makes amazing materials for finishing guitars. I have already tested all the materials that they sent me and you can see the results in the previous videos.

My comment was not meant as disrespectful to anyone. You sir, are one of the gifted few. All im saying is that i have owned both Asian finishes and US finishes since the 1970's. I am happy with everything i own and am not particularly convinced it makes a difference. Yes, 3 Gibsons and a list of other ones i don't have room for. Keep going Mr. 8... impressive
Thank you
You sir, are an artist! Can't wait to see the finished guitar. Great work!
Thank you
Show me anyone better than Dr Nitro? His skill with colour is superb.
Thank you 😊
I watched both parts now and this is just awesome work. I had watched 7-8 other videos before, including secrets of 59, and refinish projects. You are a source of knowledge my friend. I wish I could have more conversations as I'm sure I could learn more from you.
Thank you
I'm looking forward to seeing how the new paint will turn out.
Nice color build/burst & sandout, look forward to see the final sand/polish and deep shine. Nice work!
Thank you

Well done dude, keep going like that 👍🏽

The people at Gibson should bring you onboard. The only reasons I won’t buy Gibsons anymore is they are overly priced and just… sticky. They feel so user unfriendly to play. Nice work. That’s a stunning finish
@@johnwhitaker545 Thank you
amazing job sir! I would be mad if my Les Paul would do this
Your 1st video is like an audit of Gibson's process. Glad you put this kind of content up. I hope to get mine done. The top is amazing and I think they missed the mark in highlighting it as well as the color (Slow Iced Tea). Nice tones but it would be better if the finish was alive like originals were and could change as its environment dictates.
Awesome as usual. Bravo!
Thank you
Great job. Coming along nicely

Another great video! Keep up the great work my friend.

great work and awesome dedication!

Looks amazing! Talking to you in the comments of your last video you said Gibson is checking to stop you from repainting their guitars… how is it possible they can do that?
It is impossible 😁 I probably should have been scared. But in recent years, other things have scared me. There was so much fear that I gained immunity.
Always amazing!!
Thank you
Once you've got down to the clear coat, how long did you wait for the other layers?.

Will UV light quicken the fade on nitro lacquer’s?
from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, nitro varnish becomes harder, shrinks and darkens, and subsequently collapses.
You do some great videos on finishing guitars and all your content thank you friend wish you could refinish my lp and age it.
Thank you
Fantastic, you managed to get the colour and the wood to meld together. You must have studied "The secrets if colours" from the restorers of old paintings and if you did'nt then you are a serious talent. Your passion is inspiring. How long does a job like that take to complete? I tried a similar thing on les paul special(Tribute) and it took at-least a year but I got it to look like the wood pores were open. Cool and important , thanks.
It takes now about minimum 1,5 monts. It's fast. But not all projects i make so fast.
I'm glad I discovered your channel. Now I want to send all my Gibson LP's to you for refinishing, LOL. How closely does your font match the font of the original serial number?
Thank you. My sn stamp is exact copy of vintage numbers
And beautiful f'n job

They a re-finish lowers the value of a guitar but in this case it definitely increases the value.

@@8BombCustom that is a great news! Would you say 3L of aging clear nitro is enough for 1 guitar? Also, I have Keda liquid aniline dyes. Good enough to mix with this nitro? Many thanks.
@@8BombCustom hello there. How can I order this Relic nitro.

In the Australian sun the dye will fade in just 1 day
😁 agreed
As a fellow aussie i can attest to our bright skies being great for plastics aging as well, and ive got some really interesting results with aging bodies with poly coats in the sun. In most cases the blues will take on a little green hue, Natural finish will get a darker yellowing/light brown/tan, Whites obviously turn to creams surprisingly quickly,...but some reds have slightly darkened on me,...an interesting oddity indeed. * The process of leaving a poly coated body out on really hot sunny days will also lead to interesting grain lines, and other uniform "ray lines" particularly on Alder and Agathis,...the shrinkage on some of these cheap bodies is phenomenal. Silly little experiments but fun none the less,...and it can really lend some more character to a humble squire etc,...and gain the stability that only a fully dried out body and neck can provide. *(I've only had 1 out of 12 necks have a negative reaction, but the glorious natural aged toner effect to the maple is aesthetically very vintage correct, and if you do the fret ends etc while the neck is "too dry", once it settles back to a more stable humidity it will essentially be 100% fret sprout proof, in even the driest conditions on earth. *(just some silly poly guitar experiments:), no one ever mentions this subtle type of poly guitar aging, this is about the only forum where it might come in useful to someone one day. Love your work man, can't wait to experiment more with nitro as well 🤘.
@@dejadejayoutube Great experience and great information! Thank you!
@@dejadejayoutube I have a guitar here, a 76 Ibanez Les Paul Custom (Artisan copy) that was already heat damaged with cracked binding when the owner left it in the car boot for 2 summers, no shade in his parking spot it would have been 50 or 60 degrees. The entire binding disintegrated with all the plastics, warped pickguard (irreplaceable) the press fitted top split from the body, the fretboard cracked. It is a total disaster!
I painted my own Les Paul sunburst and left it in the sun for two days and it faded quite a lot
I’m an Australian, and I will die after a day in the sun.
I don’t understand. Why did the original lacquer finish peel off like that? Was it a polyurethane finish?
It is Gidson regular factory soft nitro with a lot of plasticizers like on ALL Gibson guitars.
@@8BombCustom will be very interesting to compare Gibson's nitro and your - how it separates and thickness
@@spiritby2 ua-cam.com/video/DuHlrh5cQRs/v-deo.html
They are not the same finishes they used to have before the EPA stepped in.
I believed gibson custom shop used a better nitro finish. This is embarrasing

I dont get why people use nitro, a 2 part poly hardens like a rock and doesnt stay soft like Gibsons forever. Doesnt smell like sweet candy though. A harder finish would yield a more resonant body.
You have yet to deal with this.
@@8BombCustom I did a tele and a p-bass in 2 part automotive urethane, They are harder and more resonant than my Gibson.

Looks great! Also, cool haircut!

I already knew that Gibson's modern lacquer wasn't as pure as the original 50s, but damn! Now I want to refinish mine ASAP
If people are paying Custom Shop prices this is the level of workmanship and materials they should expect.
@@stephenharrison7514 I totally agree, but the thing about plasticizers is that(among other reasons) purer nitro like in the 50s can't be used comercially in numbers as big as Gibson would because of the gas pollition
The EPA won't allow you to finish a guitar the same way they did in the 50s.
I believe that the Murphy Lab is using a lacquer that has very similar properties as early finishes, surely the Custom Shop should be using the same product? They aren't exactly cheap.
@@stephenharrison7514 Never from Gibson.
I wonder if Gibson or Fender would sell us an unfinished guitar? It would be easier than stripping the crap finish off first! I prefer thin poly on body, thin satin urethane on neck, like Fender "Professional II" models use.
Man is a freakin' ARTIST!
Great finish! I'd be more glad, if you stop smoking. Awesome painting and nice video!
Many thanks
You do awesome work!

I watched Part 1, very interesting to see how the original lacquer peeled off. Can't wait to see Part 3! Keep up the good work! 👏

If I wanted to spray a very faded light burst, almost orange outside to amber inside (think Slash Jessica les Paul) would it be best to spray a very light coat of red around the outer portion or spray as above and leave in a window for a week or two?
You need to use brown for burst shade. Nor red.

Do you spray the headstock or the logo with an amber lacquer to get that vintage “gold” Gibson logo?

Excellent work mate. Your painterly skills definitely come in handy for this application. A question about the colour you mix for the back of the guitar, was it standard to use mica dust.? Is there a better product to thicken out the mix.
Thank you. I use pumice powder only for porefiller.

@riggioguitars has tested piano lacquer but in my opinion it too soft for guitars.
