My Most Controversial* Find Yet (Sensitive Content Warning)
It is important to teach history even if it is a sensitive subject. Today we are documenting a rare "Rebel Flag" Gibson guitar that the brand briefly made in the 80s. This one happens to be an even more rare custom order to dress a Les Paul Custom up in it. It seems the public's opinion on this flag has changed greatly since these were first introduced.

That emblem was only a part of the true Confederate flag. That is what is known by all military a battle flag. Not to be confused with a regiment flag. All military when showing colors have their lead or country's flag with a regiment flag and the battle flag . This is fact not opinion. No offense either way. Civil war in truth was said to be about slavery but north south east and west had slaves that took longer than the war to be freed. The war was actually about wealth and the lack of it in the north while the south flourished in wealth . Being that its Halloween it would've been awesome if you played Cemetery Gates.
There's also a company that will plant a tree for you but it's your final resting place . And it's not cheap.

No doubt. Trogly has even taught Gibson a thing or two about their own guitars. They ought to be paying him. I also vote for a Trogly signature Les Paul with Trogly's dragon inlaid in the headstock or painted on it or something. Gibson give this man a signature an hire him as the Gibson company historian or something. Curator of the Gibson museum!

I knew the first riff you were going to play before you even started! 🙂As a Brit with no real historical baggage I find the first thing that flag brings to mind is Skynyrd. The second is those darn Duke boys of Hazzard County. Glad you decided to document this piece.

Skynyrd really didn’t even want to use the flag…MCA Records insisted on it , mostly for a tie in with “Sweet Home Alabama”. Even they knew that the flag was associated with the KKK.

There was a Guitar World or Guitar Player (not sure which guitar magazine it was in) in the mid 90's. In said interview, Zakk said the bottle Cape and a grinder to the guitar happened when he heard Brett Michaels had the same guitar. he didn't want to look to similar to his.

That regular Stars & Stripes Explorer is absolutely killer. I'd never rock a Rebel flag, but that Explorer is something I'd love to own.

Your demo introduction took me back to a couple of weeks ago at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.
Took my 17 year old grandson to his first concert… Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I must say you pretty much nailed the sound of those intros! Of course, he loved it! Nothing like introducing your grandson to “Freebird” played live! Great job, Trogly!

I have my own opinions, like “they shouldve let Sherman finish the job”. But it is interesting to talk about. A little weird how Reverb is kneejerking over not selling it, it’s a historic piece and we gotta talk about the whole shebang.
Sherman is the guy who realizes that--the Confederacy will only give up if the price of the war becomes so terrible, that the Southern public will just say "enough"

One day I was in the local music store and in came a man with a Gibson guitar in a new finish and the son of owner came out with a flying V in a new color and they asked me what I thought of it. The color was purple burst. It was a pretty finish but I wasn't in to Flying V's but I did love the color. Boy, if I knew it would be a rare color I would have gotten it. It was a pretty color and the man was a Gibson Representative. 🤔🤯 True story.
I read years ago in Guitar World mag that the "someone" who lit Zakk's rebel Les Paul was an enebriated Ozzy

I've played the 70's deluxe with mini gibson humbucker's Stanley Knight from Black Oak Arkansas owned. Jammed with his son travis in high school. He still had an og dyna comp, early 70's small stone and early dd-2.

Those strap mark on the top of the guitar probably didn't take that long to happen. I have an explorer and the same thing happened to the neck, however, the strap was only left against the neck for a week. You could imagine my surprise when I opened the case and found that :(

A very interesting and significant guitar, I was surprised this is such an unusual finish as I had envisaged a lot of people in the 80s and 90s would have this finish given the popularity of southern rock bands.
Can't sell it on reverb or eBay?!?!? Ridiculous.. so sick of all the woke bs.. woke peeps wanting to cancel history..
Important correction from the tour flyer and what you said about the Allman Brothers. They actually did not approve of using the flag, and Gregg Allman said that if you ever see merchandise, or anything involving the Allmans and the rebel flag, just know it did not go through them. Skynyrds use of the rebel flag actually caused tension between the two bands back in the day (Derek Trucks has a story about this from his uncle, Butch Trucks, who was one of the two drummers for the Allman brothers) .
Thank you so much for pointing this out. I don’t think anyone can argue the Allman Brothers didn’t understand the finer points of Southern Culture.
Skynyrd did not use the flag . That was MCM idea cause those great liberal record execs wantdd to create turmoil to sell records. I cant beleive people still fall for these tactics

The Designer Series white V's, with the blue paint splatter, was what hooked me on guitars as a 13 year old. There were a couple of those Designer Series guitars, aside from just the white V, in the local music store, and I used to just stare at them, up on the wall, and made me want one! A guitar like that seemed sooooooooo far out of reach to me at the time. Here I am today, at almost 52, and I'm fortunate enough, blessed enough...whatever, to have some very exotic and gorgeous guitars in my own collection. But wow, those ads take me back!
I had the white v with black and silver pinstripes with the gibson pos trem , the trem ruined a decent guitar.
I still think the most offensive Gibson is the reverse Flying V 🤷🏻♂️

There's a big difference between forgetting history and honoring history. We don't need statues Confederate or Nazi "heroes" to remember their atrocities.

I'm glad that your talking about it Austin. I'm very middle of the road on the flag myself. Im no historical fanboy of the slavery of man. But its a subject thats gone on since time began for the human race. Tragically, it still goes on today disguised as foreign employment agencies, wage disputes, and passport & Visa thefts. Although, human trafficking is its best known modern struggle. But just because a flag represented a group of people in their struggle, morally right or morally wrong, the loss of historical context is certainly an issue in this arguement. I see both sides in this quite easily. Its easy to pick up something convenient, that you think you know about and burn it for the sake of your virtue signaling. Somehow hoping that a certain group of people will be touched by your gesture. But if your going to do that, why not make the hollow gesture to the slaves in Dubai, or in diamond mines in half a dozen countries in Africa, perhaps Chinese or Mexican immigrants working off their ridiculous human trafficking burdens. What I'm saying, is that there are people that need our help right now, and the best way to help them is by coming together now and putting pressure on the countries and companies benefiting from slavery today. Instead of allowing ourselves be distracted and separated in anger by a chapter of history that should be regarded as historical and possibility for parlay? Was the flag just a symbol of slavery, or was in also about States rights, taxation, Lincolns election, economic issues, and military protection (such as in Texas)? It would seem that its a complex issue, and the flag was obviously more than a singular issue identifier. What people today seem to refuse to see, is that a company like De Beers uses slave labour in unbearable conditions, to attain diamonds and gold, which brides and grooms happily garnish their engagement rings, wedding bands, and anniversary gifts with. This happens thousands of times across America everyday of every year, but we put no effort into stopping the practice by boycotting these jewelry companies, because we get a better deal through the slavery and death of men , women, and children we don't know. Personally, I know the division being sewn is placed there by all political parties, to keep us focused on an issue that has significance, but tha significance is paltry compared to the souls dying right this minute. All we need do, is put the effort we have organized on flags, statues, and hate, to work against modern day slavery, and we'll save actual lives right now, this day, before they're gone forever.

I don't think Zakk was influenced by Brett Michaels when it comes to buying the rebel flag guitar. My understanding is the mods he did to the body were though. He didn't like that Bret had a similar guitar. So, he started adding the bottle caps.

Gibson did make an oversized explorer prototype for Dimebag in the 90s. Probably only the one that’s still in his wife’s possession. Iirc it was plain blue. Saw it on a video a few years back.
Dime did have a very rare Ace Freely played on stage.

Thanks Trogly - Always great to see a rare model. I was a teenager in the late 60's early 70's - the furthest thing from my mind listening to and seeing the Allman brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd was the civil war and its implications. Being a California kid I always associated those symbols with a style of rock that was new, exciting, and yet unheard by the Van Halen and Motley Crue (which I also loved) crowd that hadn't heard southern rock yet.

The trick here is to paint the sides and back orange and add an “01” to the back. Then complete the transformation by hucking it over the nearest barn or creek while banjos play frantically in the background
The guitar is very interesting and odd to keep it simple. I understand the push back from people based on the looks alone but the fact you probably won’t be able to sell it online kinda feels out of pocket. The worst part to me as an artist is that they charged someone a lot of money to build that guitar and they didn’t even take the time to space the stars out evenly! TRAGIC!

The Dimebag guitar is a Dean USA ML. These are incredibly well made instruments and worthy of your review if you ever come across one.
There were also Washburns. Dime had a 10 year contract with Washburn. When it ended he went to Dean.
Yeah it was a washburn not a dean. The only dean he used was his og lightening one, he was at washburn for the majority of his professionally endorced career. He went to dean after his contract ended. Believe he signed in 2003 and was killed in 2004. Dean ran with it and made about 9million "dime" versions before reita went after Dean last year and they pulled everything dime related.
All of his most iconic guitars are washburn minus the lightning ML that he had before pantera
@@jlo7770 U are partially right. Dimebag used deans almost exclusively during the 80sand up until 94. During that time he played guitars such as: FBD ml( tobacco burst), Dean from hell (originally maroon coloured), bullet hole ml (originally a custom lightning paint job by dimes tech), Coors light ml (Custom paint job), Tea burst ml and many others. In 94 (or early 95 im not completely sure) he started a contract with washburn and had that going until 04. In 04 his contracts with washburn expired and he went back to dean where they started making him some custom models and also released some signature models for the public. I hope this information finds you well!
@@anglesupremacy123 no... he had the dean from hell the rest were washburn. Maybe pre fame he played dean but all of pantera/ect were wawhburn. He went to dean during damage plan. Everything else was washburn not dean
@@jlo7770 Sorry man but you're gonna have to get your facts straight. There's live footage of dime playing deans beside the dean from hell, all the way from 90-94. He played at least 4 other deans before he contracted with washburn

Ok, had to post, smile. As a progressive, and lived and born in the north, Chicago, south ,Arkansas and Kansas City. I don’t think of the confederate flag in any emotional way, but understand if it does to some or many, as an artistic design, it’s cool. But I won’t be wasting money on buying the design on a flag, poster etc, I’m not a collector so not on a guitar. Fully understand you buying it, it does look cool and as I’ve seen mentioned, someone in Skynerd played one like that, or am I incorrect?
It is a legitimately great design from a vexillogical standpoint, but it is also undeniably, factually representative of a war for racial slavery.

Read the declarations of secession, nobody was threatening to abolish slavery in slave States. Everyone has a mental image of their "place", regardless of the truth. Say Italian-American and what comes to mind is the art of Florence, not the slums of Naples. Well Southern rockers did the same thing, singing about an easy live and let live lifestyle of "sweet home Alabama". Don't forget that the Allman Brothers were an integrated Band...but had to watch their backs being long-haired "freaks". It seems things didn't change that much from the Jim Crow days, it was just easier to invent a false image of the "new South" than facing up to the truth. So what to do about that guitar? Destroy it, just like that. Yes that's a tough call but if you put it on display because of it's "historical content" then you better damn well make sure your version of history includes the suffering that's reflected in that finish. The world doesn’t seem half as ugly when you’re not required to pay attention.

You cowards only just started parroting "racist! slavery! white supremacy!" when the media started forcing that narrative. The rebel flag was flown when the Berlin wall was torn down. People have always known what it represents, and that isn't what you sheep think it is. It's also insane to suggest all slaves were suffering, like next level delusional to think that. Especially since European slave owners in the US were the least cruel slave owners in history.

As a teenager in the 90's, i never knew what that flag meant. But a lot of the players i liked had that flag on their guitars. It took a few years for me to understand until someone told me. At least you could make your self record the videos & document it. 👍

I would remind you that the "Rebel Flag" represented the heart of the southern man's will to fight and the pride in their homeland whatever state that may have been. Most people from my generation never thought of it as any kind of racist symbol and many of my black friends in Fayetteville and Lexington N.C. sported them on their shirts, hats and jackets in the 80s and 90s when I lived there. At some point it began to be used as a divisive symbol to fan the dying embers of racism in this country. They (the establishment elites who run this country) want us to aim our sites on each other so that we don't align against them and end their hold on power. Together we are strong. Divided we are weak and easily led into conflict. Doing onto others as we would have them do onto ourselves is as sound of advice as anyone has ever given regarding these and other matters involving relations with our fellow man. Love thy neighbor and do benevolence to all and meaningless disagreements lose their influence on the world around us. I do feel that we should be sensitive to the feelings of others and empathetic to what they're going through but, we cannot allow the world around us to be redefined to make us surrender our dignity and our rights without consequence. I do not wish to quarrel about what it has become known as nor do I cling to it as a badge of pride myself. In all honesty, as someone born in the North who has lived the majority of their life there, I have no sense of sentimentality for it at all nor do I feel a sense of nostalgia for it. I'm just reminded of the gleam in the eyes of those aforementioned friends when they espoused their pride in being from the south and bore that flag as their chosen symbol to reflect that pride. I want to thank you for spurring the memories of the times I shared with them into my consciousness today and wish you all the best in your endeavors. Good day.

I got the Dime Bag Rebel flagg axe.
My only complaint is, The ABB in all my 45+ yrs of being a fan, has NEVER flown that flag, but many others have and still do. Not offended. i used to fly it myself, but after becoming friends with many people from differrent backgrounds realized it could hurt their feelings, or their opinion of me for doing so. Im really glad my Colombian girlfriend back in the day talked me out of getting that tattoo!
Exactly. Gregg said that if you ever see anything involving ABB and the flag, it did NOT go through them as they would never approve it. Any piece of merch or tour flyer with the rebel flag and the ABB did not go through the band. Derek Trucks said his uncle Butch said they actually thought less of Skynyrd for using it.

Just throwing this in there but the flag itself for a lot of people represents rebelling against what is felt like tyranny, yes slavery was involved in that during the war but a lot of people today see it as a symbol of independence from a government they didn't believe in, I myself am not one of those people I feel like I need to make that clear.

The flag design looks off center. Maybe if it was centered it wouldn’t work with the pickups. That design works better with Dime’s guitars. Aesthetically speaking.

The only thing wrong with that Union Jack Explorer is the white part of the flag has yellowed significantly over the years. But it looked fine in the advertising photo.
