What's the most expensive piece of gear you own?
I don't play my most expensive guitar. I don't even look at it....Like Nigel Tufnel.
Everything I own is stolen
Music is Win a boss katana 100 amp for $350 and a squier for $300
Music is Win a 400 dollar epiphone em 2 custom prophecy
A 1998 PRS CE22. It's my favourite.. but lately I'm playing my 200$ Harley Benton more.
Steal a man's wallet and he will be poor for a week, teach him music and how to buy instruments and he will be poor his entire lifetime.
Underrated comment yo
That’s a good one lmao, I’ve actually never heard that one
This is my favorite comment.
100% agree! One of those "Funny but True" sayings................
@LPS IITU ja linnea videot mee töihi

Exactly what runs through my mind every time he picks up a PRS saying "why wouldnt you play this?" I could pay myself through college twice for the same price as that ten top custom 22. ( over exaggerated statement, not for reals fam)

Well, Tyler you got a point. But I think that you can get good quality gear without busting the bank, so you don't need expensive gear, you need QUALITY GEAR
Fausto Hernandez quality is almost always expensive my dude 🔥
Sam Smith not entirely..
GiraffeForPigs well what do you consider expensive tho 🤔
Sam Smith Taylor, Gibson, actual EXPENSIVE brands. Sure they’re good and play good because they’re built and played to last. However in my experience, I’ve seen that playing guitars in the $100’s range ($100-500) that they actually sound nicer-or play just as nice-as a $1,000 guitar. I have a fender strat that came with an amp and it was my first electric that I got for probably $150 (my guess) and I have a fender acoustic-electric, a Michael kelly, and an epiphone les Paul. All of which sound great in their own way, all except the Michael Kelly, were all $150+ (if I’m not mistaken) so in my opinion, expensive gear doesn’t always mean quality gear
GiraffeForPigs I definitely hear you, In drums it’s entirely different ( I mostly play drums ) almost always more expensive the better
So the message is you don’t need expensive gear but get expensive gear anyway
Maybe
it´s a wrong message, this guy is an idiot
@@nicolashunter4131 Speak for yourself bud, this is a great video.

I think this guy likes Paul Reed Smith, just a little
Magnus Likes Tanks And he does this for a good reason...because PRS is awesome!
Most of them were given or lend to him for publicity purpose. This guy would advertise everything no matter what it is
His bought his main prs guitar before he started youtube and it has been his fav guitar ever since.
Him and me both
Even their SE stuff is really nice 👍🏼
@@davidlecours1023 Assumption. He just likes PRS, like many other people do.
I like how you added that aesthetic means a lot. My favorite guitar I own (as well as a lot of them I just had to have....) was hanging on the wall at guitar center and it called out to me as I was walking around to buy something else. I sat in the parking lot in my crappy truck for 45 minutes agonizing over it because it was all the money I had. I ended up going back in and the guy gave me a discount because it had a little ding. This was 20 years ago and I still love it. Prettiest guitar ever.
Well, I wasn't in the entirely same situation but I chose a "beginner inappropriate" guitar (Floyd Rose) over "beginner-friendly" (fixed bridge) partially because of aesthetics - I didn't like the finish and the colour of the latter one. 🤣 (They were otherwise in quite same price range (400-500 €), except the first one was old higher-end one and the second was new one, and this also had affected my choice, tbh.)
You’re an inspiration for me. I started playing guitar about three weeks ago. I bought a $280 acoustic and it’s the best decision I’ve never made. I catch myself constantly thinking about it while at work, out with friends, even when my fingers can’t handle it I just can’t stop. Thank you so much for all the advice on your channel. Keep it up! :)
Aren't most picks a type of plastic? I mean,Yeah, there are Nylon picks but aren't most other plectrum made from types of plastic. What is wrong with plastic? I love a good ULTEX, Celuloid, Totex, Duralin and whatever it is they make the Big Stubbies out of...
bjdenil I also kind of wondered this. I mean, is he suggesting we use wooden picks? Haha. I use the JP Jazz III. Those are nice picks, but I’m pretty sure they’re plastic.
All those things are just different types of plastic... I mean a good Dunlop pick will be a massive improvement over a cut up credit card but no reason to stay away from plastic. Metal/wood/felt picks have their place but plastic is probably the most versatile material for making picks.
Funny though, since the common "plastic" and stuff like Nylon are both polymers, just with different purposes, both are plastics ;)
Pretty sure he's talking about the packs of generic picks you can buy at like Walmart
@@urath55 LOL, true! We just dont usually call Nylon a plastic but I guess you could.......
I can agree 100%, but there’s something special about the high end PRS, custom shop fender/Gibson. You truly appreciate it’s quality and it can make you feel a certain way that makes you a better playing

Same dude. My dad got the 4000 dollar Misha Mansoor sig a couple years ago and doesn’t play it anymore
You need expensive gear
You want expensive gear
But you can't afford it.
Truth
Very true
Bill Primo i have a job but with minimal wage for an 18 year old, so yea.
And you spend all day staring at youtube. Watching a lot of guitarists with great gear who have skill way beyond you. Blame social media for it.
cables, strings, picks in order of money.
you can pick with a coin or your hand.
When I was younger my main acoustic guitar was a cheap-ish Washburn. For the price it was actually pretty decent - was not too bad about staying in tune and having a playable action. It was good enough to perform with and have it stay in tune for at least a short set.
Some years later I upgraded to a Martin D28. Wow, what a difference. It's one thing for a guitar to be functional - stay in tune, have playable action, etc. But there's a whole additional level of sonic richness that comes from a finely crafted higher end guitar. Oftentimes I'll be playing alone and just revel in the sheer beauty of the sound. As a consequence, I play a lot more often and longer after getting this guitar.
Definitely true. The experience takes you when the quality of a well made guitar is right on the money. Add in effects and its like standing on top of the world.
Unpopular opinion: Although not always recommended for children with infinitesimal attention span, beginners need the higher quality gear more than the experts. The last thing a beginner needs is a guitar that fights them, but an expert will have the experience and knowledge necessary to either work through or around the fight put up by a low-tier instrument and still sound great
What about just simply learning patience and dedication?
@@crazygermanviper I don't see the relevance to having equipment that fights the user, it's easy enough to get discouraged in the beginning and a big source of that is the playability of the instrument. A good guitar doesn't bring good technique with it, so patience and dedication still apply because that's what you need in order to improve
@@justinvallange That's not how it works though. A very expensive guitar will probably play a bit smoother than cheaper ones, but if you just focus on getting a guitar that fits you and has decent build quality you don't have to get anything remotely expensive: A simple squier strat is all you need to get started.
There’s two things that make a guitar sound good.. the player and the amp.
Dad bought me a guitar when I was 12, I still have it today because even though I didn't have the attention span back then, it's still nicer than anything I could afford now.
Roses are red

Tyler sits in sweetwater to sell us on gear 😊😊😊😊

yes
Would be awesome to see a comparison of an expensive rig vs a sub par rig vs a cheap rig. Give people some perspective on how little or how more expensive rigs effect the player etc.
I play a fender squire.
I’m Motivated because of music not cause of the price of my guitar
YES
Early on I would've called bs or would've said somthing like: well good for you! I can't afford a freaking PRS or Kiesel! And now ive got my Kiesel and my entire outlook has changed. Id say it's definitely worth it to get the higher end gear. You end up paying for it through setup or repair on a cheaper instrument anyways.
Amen to this. Been playing guitar for about five years now. First three of those I played two budget line guitars and both myself and my parents (I was 15 when I started, twenty now) poured tons of money into just continuing to fix them. Finally, both budget lines broke down. I got a couple PRS guitars as birthday and Christmas gifts... and my outlook changed too. I love playing now, I haven't had to get either of the PRS guitars fixed and I don't worry about them falling apart, and I'm the most pleased with my tone that I've ever been.
This vid perfectly summed up my thoughts on the subject, especially the point about aesthetics/ making you want to play. When I was a teenager and got my first high-quality guitar (a goldtop Les Paul standard) the amount I played basically doubled because every time I saw it I wanted to play it.
Why You DON`T Need Expensive Gear
1) You will always worry as someone may steal or break it
2) You`ll be very sad when it actually happens
😏
JK Expensive is awesome
Alarm system? check. Dog? check. Handgun? check. :)
Just don’t buy gibson with a bent headstock or tuneomatic, then you can at least replace things when they do break
0:00 Fair enough, thank you very much.
My gear is:
Squier stratocaster
Fender frontman 10G
Random cable
Tortex pick
my sister bought my nephew a frontman 10G. it's a better amp than the peavey vypyr i bought for $200 lol.
Same but shittier amp:D
Well, I have a rocktile terrible strat knockoff, a 10 watt practice amp which sounds just plainly terrible, and (luckily) I upgraded to a Stagg cable. Picks are Dunlop picks and picks that were in the strap that I bought. At least, I got an acoustic which is truly unbeatable! It sounds not as bright as most guitars, but it sounds really, really warm. Awesome guitar! It's a Sigma DM-1ST+(Sigma is from Martin) for 320 euros. It's quite heavy, but it's insanely good, for the price! 😊
Fabian Van Der Elst i have got an acoustic too but it costs 120€ and it reaaaally sucks
@@vittoriodelucia5828 Which one is it? I highly recommend buying the Sigma DM-1ST+ :)

The latest gigs I've played with a cheap Boss GT-1 instead of my Helix running into cheap power-amp (Mooer Baby Bomb) - I sold most of my expensive tube amps and my sound is great.
Boss GT-1 is beast...I just love it
@@alifayman6860 : yes, maybe the plexi-models lack a bit but i LOVE the NATURAL CLEAN - I get SRV-tones that I was never been able to get with any other device or tube-amp

I was expecting a humorous, fast-paced video and instead I got something both incredibly comforting and inspiring all at once
And what about those of us who can't afford 1000 dollar strats and les pauls, I can do just fine with a 50 dollar strat copy from eBay
I've played almost my entire life. There is nothing wrong with having nice stuff. But we all know those guys who judge your worth as a guitarist/drummer/whatever by the gear you have. Fuck those guys, am I right?
@@Cugelclever Those haters will end up as music snobs in the audience...eventually everyone around town wont work with them because of their negativity ...keep on rocking!
First of all be certain that those people wont even know that its a 50 dollar guitar if you somewhat mod it and do a bit of guitar work on it.If you sand the logo off...engrave some bullshit with a dremel(that gives a...custom feel) and handmade a pickguard lets say from wood....immediately you ll start to get question about how you got your custom guitar....
I still prefer my higher end guitars for feel alone. Sure I could get by on a Glarry or Squier, but they lack the feel.
I can't even afford the $50 eBay's strat..hmm
I got a 'Vox Super Beatle' setup when I was 18 (1971) ...still have it
"Don't use plastic picks" wait, what? What else is there? Other than using coins like Brian May
Alex Funk teeth
good question
There are Wooden ones and also Metal ones but they are quite rare and weird and I'm also wondering what he meant by not using plastic picks😜
What pick should i use then?
I think we are all meant to be using animal shells.
A mim telecaster through a boss katana sounds great!
seriously. i used to shit so hard on expensive gear until i got a couple nice guitars, its just one of those things you wont understand until you sit down with a nice piece of equipment in your hands and play it for a while. its a night and day difference. playing with the el cheapo stuff is fun, and its nice to have when you want to start learning how to fix/mod your gear, but you really do get what you pay for.
INTONATION GOD I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH YOU NEED INTONATION
I like buying the cheap stuff, and making it great. I take pride in making it better then buying it. I do like the video.
i love both! i love playing my Cus24,makes me feel classy even if im really a loser!
but i also love playing my Harley Benton Cus24 knock off that required a lil TLC but ended up being a fantastic guitar! both make me want to play! its the over priced duds that i really hate.
I love having cheap and top end gear working all together. It gives it a "weathered" sound that's unique to each setup. I also enjoy plugging in to someone else's setup and usually sparks something different I wouldn't have normally explored.
That little demo at the end was pretty badass 😯
Tyler, you are tempting me to spend 6k on a custom shop les paul.
I'll save up for a year and then I'll buy it😄
Well I just finished watching and im gonna get this distortion pedal I've had my eye on for awhile, thanks for the good advice.
Yes I do. Maybe you don't, but I do.
But seriously, I would advise people to just pull the trigger on something that you want and not settle. If that takes a few extra months of waiting and saving, that's still better than settling. Let me give you an example, I've spent about a total of $2,000 on 2 amps in my life, the first was a 15 watt Crate practice amp that I got with my first guitar, then after about 2 years, I upgraded from entry level to a mid-high end Epiphone, and about 2 years after that I pulled the trigger on a used Marshall JVM 210 with 1960A Cab for $1,900. And now I've got my dream amp. I don't have to chase tone anymore, and I'm happy. My buddy, didn't do that. He did the thing where he would buy a $300-$600 amp every 6-12 months, and he's spent more like $3,500 dollars on amps in his lifetime, and he still doesn't have one he likes all that much, but he's got like 6 mediocre ones. It's the same story with guitars. I have 3 really great guitars, and he has like 10 mediocre guitars, and has spent more on them than I have on my Gibson LP Tradional (which is my favorite), American Standard Tele, and Schecter Hellraiser with a Floyd and a Sustaniac.
Bottom line is, I suggest saving up and getting something that you actually want and will love cherish and enjoy, rather than kicking the can down the road so to speak and being a bit let down and spending twice as much money in the long run.
Your channel is on fire now days so many strings at same place never seen before
Thank you tyler for the awesome work you do here on yt. Your videos inspire me on a regular basis to pick up my guitar (her name is also baby, but she is a tele ^^) and rock the fuck out of her as best as i possibly can! Thanks mate and keep your awesomeness going! All the best wishes from germany \m/
Went to the store to buy strings today. Also tried out a couple of acoustics, I instantly fell in love with the cheapest one I tried, cycled home, and drove back to buy it.
As a drummer I really want to start playing guitar or even Bass, I'm poor so I may have to get a cheap guitar or cheap bass but that's why they're called entry-level instruments right? I'm 26 years old and haven't been able to touch my drumset since I was around 21. I want to try an instrument that is able to be played even in my room without worrying about bothering people.
I just have an acoustic bass and I want to play the bass again. The one and only left I could play with Boom by pod and I still remember it LOL! I self taught myself. Overall I may have to get $100 base but you know what, it might inspire me to work hard to get good at the instrument. Thank you for this video Tyler and God bless.
I recommend a Harley Benton bass from Thomann, I love mine! Their guitars are also pretty nice for the low price
@@Flughundi I appreciate it, I'm going to have to look at it. My hands are a little bit big and meaty, kind of like Mr Krabs and his big meaty claws. I might have to look at the base because boy was it fun to play, even if I never do more than a couple of Base looks and don't get any better than that I still had fun playing it.
I recommend Dean or Ibanez basses. They sound good and stay in tune for weeks.
I recomend a cort bass, or what i have is a Squier Fender Jaguar Bass special edition. It has both normal and jazzy pickups. And for the amp, i can recomend a cort 15w amp for practising.
@@NBalint15 you can pretty much play country music on any guitar right? Cuz I'm really into country. I know it's not like the most popular thing to say on a primarily metal Channel, but I like country LOL!

Dude you were right that slide looks awesome!! And the walls of guitars look awesome!! I can’t wait to go up to Sweetwater!!!
Don’t worry, most of you won’t get out of the basement so no one will be impressed by your expensive guitar.
Oof
That is reality
Most expensive piece of gear I own? Ibanez J.Custom 30th Anniversary Limited Edition RG. It's excessively blingy with a AAAAA quilted top and back (yes, the back is quilted LOL). No one sees the back but me, but at least my belly knows it's rubbing against the beautiful quilt :) However, it's not just eye candy, and has some additional really nice appointments (e.g., stainless steel frets, Ibanez's fret edge treatment, Lo-Pro Edge tremolo, etc). As it should, it plays like butter too! :) I did a review of it, if you are curious.
Turned back for a moment because I thought I heard something and my wallet was sitting on my shoulder with a very angry face.
Just wanted to say that I enjoy your channel....and I'm a DRUMMER!!!! I don't play guitar at all, but I like gear in general, and I enjoy seeing how guitarists and bassists deal with common issues, similarly to how we drummers do. Many things are "universal" and the things that aren't universal are still interesting nonetheless.
@2:40 he says quote on quote "comturbility"
The best gear for you is the gear that stays out of your way. Its a conduit for music. You pick up that guitar and music comes out. You play through that amp and it inspires. The price tag doesn't correlate directly to that. My old guitar teacher played at strat for years. He was on tour and had a dream about this red guitar with all these knobs on it. Walked into a pawn shop the next day and there it was. For $36. It changed the whole course of his music.
I showed this to my dad...
He's buying me a brand new Les Paul Custom when I finish high school 😉
I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio and an SG Standard. But my drumset is the money pit of hell. I have a gigantic vintage 3-ply Ludwig kit that I bought piece by piece over a 10 year period. With the drumset alone (26x14" bass, 12x8, 14x10, 15x12, 15x14, 16x16, 18x16, 20x18 and 14x6.5" supraphonic snare, 14x5" tequila sunrise Vistalite, 14x5" acrolite snare drums) and the Paiste cymbals, a mix of 10 1970's black label 2002 and 7 1980's red label 2002 cymbals plus the heavy duty stands, heavy duty drum throne, cases/trap box, 2 different double pedals (Yamaha flying dragon direct drive plus a Tama Iron cobra double chain) plus a stack of premium drum heads, sticks, percussion items like cowbells, tambourines, chimes, and the stupid 55" Symphonic Gong I bought for some reason, I am in over $20K. This doesn't include shipping each piece individually. Plus I have a P.A. system and several lower end guitars/1 bass, and 4 guitar/bass amps including a half stack mesa boogie. What the fuck is wrong with me. I haven't played in a band in years. I guess when I die, someone is gonna have a bitch of a time sorting through and selling my stuff!!!
It would be great if the video was the only first 5 seconds

Got to disagree on the cables - Sure , don't buy the cheapest ones of course (as the quality is often what you'd expect) but there's a lot decent cables that are not expensive - Fender, Ernie Ball, D'addario/PW
Totally agree on the rest though!
I use D'ADDARIO planetwaves, the one with momentary switch. It's cheap and the quality is great.
Cant be at Mogami. Pricey. But I can replace them for free at any time. Helped eliminate some noise issues I was giving as well

6.) Tyler is trying to get kickbacks from gear companies by promoting their products in videos like these.
A highly under rated thing to do when on a budget is to buy used gear, Craigslist, 5 miles and FB marketplace are all great places to look. You not only have more of the option to negotiate price but you can also be as choosy as you want. It may take time but you’ll eventually find your diamond.

I will never regret buying my Les Paul back in '94. It was the most expensive guitar I ever bought and I still have it. I have a couple other guitars I had bought prior to it... mid price guitars. But when I play my LP and my buddy plays the other one, you can tell a difference. You don't have to have expensive gear, for sure. The most important thing is playing and practicing. But great gear is an awesome thing to have.
Hey Tyler, When are we getting Know your Gear, Music is Win Shwagg ????????????
1 second and I got my answers already
It’s almost as if this video was sponsored by a large distributor who’s sole intention would be to make us spend more money
That opener is killer!
If you need equipment to motivate you then ultimately you don't have enough motivation to stick with it anyway.
Not true I love playing but my guitar buzzes and sounds really thin cuz it’s a shit guitar. If I was to get a standard jazz master or something I would play way more often because rock is my favorite genre
@@hamburgerdan101 : A setup can fix that. A pro-level one is only $100. Or DIY with $50 worth of tools and supplies can make a Squier Bullet feel great. I know because I've done it. Don't want to mess with it, a $400 guitar can be fabulous.
I just started playing guitar. I bought a Boss Katana 50 and a Gibson Les Paul Tribute 2018 gold top. It was a lot of money, but I can afford it and do not regret buying it. Furthermore, it's true what's being said in this video. It's a beautiful guitar so I just can't skip a day practice.
It’s not like I live on the street, but there aren’t even a guitar store where I live. Sooooooo
I can relate to that. Nearest place that sold guitars where I used to live was a six hour drive away and stupidly overpriced. There was one place that was an hour drive away, but that was an electronics store that just so happened to have guitars. Cheap, crappy guitars that the store owners didn't know anything about....
I still count that as super lucky though. Cheap gear is better than no gear.
Most small towns will have a small independent music store. But for ones that don't that's where checking reviews on youtube and ordering online comes in.
Man, that private stock model was beautiful. Wow
Ola.
Ola can make a cheap junker sound awesome.
Your fourth reason is so true. I have 24 fantastic guitars and my brother 30. Well, I play all day because is so beautiful having all this guitars in my hands. Of course I am not saying you need so many guitars to have fun because I played a lot md had much fun also when we had just one guitar (a Squier Bullett bought in the early nineties) and one bass (a Squier Precision our father bought a year later) with two little amps and no pedal at all. But we have this strong passion and we don't want to spend our money other than in gear for music (cds, amps, guitars, pedals). One of the best passion a guy can follow.
Expensive doesn't necessarily mean good...
well usually it is, since the high quality material is what makes up the price
You're probably using Gibson.
My two cents is if you’re serious about it and starting out get the most expensive equipment you’re comfortable spending. If you go cheap you’ll hate it and buy something better later on. If you buy something good you’ll grow into the gear. From there once you’re more experienced you can upgrade or that piece of equipment might be all you need.
Yo Tyler I need your guitar 😂
Most expensive guitar is a 1964 epiphone crestwood that was my fathers first guitar that he bought in 1969. He then gave it to me and I love the thing.
Buy a squire classic vibe, best guitars for a buck
This was really well thought out and made lots of sense.
And, now I don't have as much buyer's remorse from the Telecaster I bought last week.
Sounds like Capitalist propaganda but OK
All those awesome Soviet era guitarists made a lot of innovative music on The People's Instrument, didn't they?
Great pedals make it so much easier to get the tone you're looking for.
I agree with needing expensive gear to a point, what I mean by that is once a guitar gets so expensive usually around $1000-$1500 you have a quality instrument regardless if u go more expensive
A good setup is all you need. The setup on my squier 50s vibe strat is absolutely phenomenal, it plays like butter and cost me 350CAD
When breaking, be sure to not raise your head up. Keep your head down. Let your arm excelarate the cue, follow through, and let the momentum of the cue do the work. Cue ball control is key so a half tip low of center works nice at keeping the cue ball in the center of the table. That is the first step of a break and run.....oh yeah and guitar stuff hehe.
I just love my Squires...One Affinity, two Sonics with a BlackStar v4 amp.
Godbless you ! That last tip was inspirational.
Fantastic video! Couldnt agree more. Just bought a Martin D-28 👌
My most expensive piece is my 2003 PRS ARTIST CUSTOM 22. Bought new for $2900 , when my thumb isn't smashed I play it every day. I'm on hold for the next couple of months.
The most expensive piece of gear I own, is the Schecter, Evil Twin that just arrived yesterday from Sweetwater. I have only been playing for a couple months, and this is a huge upgrade. I concur with the statement, that if you spend more money on gear, you are going to want to play it. I haven't put it down.
