I've played some vintage stuff even stuff used by artists recording or live with documentation and it made me realize that the magic is in the person not the gear take what you have and create instead of chasing tone or gear
100% agree. People think that owning a '59 Les Paul will make them sound like Jimmy Page in his prime or that a Strat manufactured in the same batch as the one owned by Hendrix, will instantly turn them into a guitar deity. Folk will worry too much about bling and not enough about their own substance as a musician.
I recently got back from a trip to Nashville where I visited Carter Vintage Guitars. I had 2 hours of the most wonderful guitar bliss I’ve ever experienced in my life! I also played a 1951 Nocaster worth $110k! Know what? It wasn’t under glass….it along with a plethora of crazy valuable instruments was right out in the open, completely accessible to everyone! As everyone says, some of the old stuff is awful to play, but when you find those gems, there’s something inexplicably special about them. Carter is a helluva place…I will never not go in there whenever I’m back in Nashville! Oh and if money was no object, on that trip a $14,000 SG with wiggle stick would’ve come home with me…
Being a tinkerer, i enjoy assembling guitar from different kits. I dont have the tools to be able to cut my own bodies or necks, but i can do most of the other things, given the time needed (being disabled really slows me down). Im still a beginner player, but i really enjoy being able to use my time to put the kits together and enjoy them. This allows me to put together EXACTLY what i want.
I agree, overhyped. How much of that was the amp though? And if he pulled a 500 dollar Fender off the wall with similar wound pickups I bet it would sound just as good.
In my opinion that Rickenbacker sounds unbelievably bad 😂, I preferred the two Fender but It is and easy win 😂. Actually I was not impressed by that guitar and It left me indifferent but, hey, it's only my opinion, if you liked it good for you 😉

So, you could buy a hello kitty guitar and put good pickups in it, and place them properly and you would be find and dandy lion. Now, playability wise, well that's where the money well spent comes in for me.
Cheaper entry level guitars, bought by their parents or borrowed from siblings- were often what got our guitar hero’s 75-90% there. I’ve seen them in studios (Yamaha- Nashville in Franklin). These people like variety and play anything. Don’t forget back in the 60-80’s luthiers, fans and experts would get their guitars in rockstar hands backstage. These rockstars didn’t make sure it was a $10k Murphy Lab first, they just liked it. Slash took factory 2nds from Gibson. You can find used 1987 Gibson Stands for $2000 right now at GC. A beat up Standard and a Marshall was really the top for them
I also believe the music is in the artist but the feeling an artist gets from the connection between their instrument is very personal and sometimes vintage instruments just have the worn in,warm,fits like a glove,makes you happy feeling that a new off the shelf instruments don't often have! It doesn't have to be high end to have Mojo! My favorite guitar's I play most are....1979 Ibanez roadster rs300tv,1980 Peavey t-60, and my favorite to play is my 1980 USA Fender lead ii....my favorite inexpensive guitar is my Korean 1991 squire floyde rose series buttercream strat with American performer hss pickups/electronics! Bar none my Peavey T-60 is cool!
You can always trade in old guitars, I had a old Strat that gave me a brand new Marshall valve top and a wah which I needed once upon a time when I had to do a gig. Did the gig on a cheap Epiphone. Useful exchange.
Nocaster, I had one without knowing what it was. It had been modified but I really liked the neck and the bridge pickup. The Joe Strummer signature model Tele is a very similar profile to my old Nocaster.
Fantasy and reality rarely converge. Better to love what you have than to love what you don’t have. Right now my money no object guitars are a Gibson ES330 and an early 2000s PRS modern Eagle single cut with a Brazilian rosewood neck and fingerboard. Not terribly unattainable

I can appreciate this kind of mindset that you have collectibles and rare things that cost a shit ton of money. That said I am not a collector. I am a frugal cheapskate that wants the following out of his guitars. Your opinions may differ but this is what I want. 1. Excellent playability. 2. Light weight. 3. Amazing tone 4. Looks. I just want the guitar to stay in tune and is easy to play with modern playability. I can find that at any price point. I got to have a guitar at 7 pounds or lighter, because I'm old! I don't want to waste money on mods so it needs to sound great out of the box, believe me when I say I've tried every mod known to the general public and even some crazy stuff I came up with on my own. I just prefer now days not doing mods, its a waste of money and nobody wants to buy it after its moved on. Lastly if its not got the vibe I'm not attracted to it in the first place. In my opinion the best of all these requirements for me is the PRS se line. I have a McCarty 594se standard that slays every Les Paul I've ever owned. Also have a NF3 se that is my go to S type guitar now because its a pound lighter than all my Stratocasters, and its basically noiseless. Get what inspires you, and pushes you to play more!
Yah Tyler has the right mix of humility and flex. He has and has access to some really incredible instruments but is always quick to point out that the instrument does not make the player. I have some pretty high-end gear these days, but I will never part with my first guitar (mexican strat) because of the sentiment and how nice it feels to play.
I really enjoy old guitars! Of course less fancy antique guitars aren't nearly as expensive, and i want to get into restoring old instruments, but they really are unique. I have this evidently hand-made balalaika from my grandmother she got at an estate sale. Not the fanciest or most playable thing *by any means*, but it really is unique. Its not super valuable so we put a nice paint on it (it didn't even have a great finish). It really feels like a commemoration of someones past work from a different time! Or how about vintage cymbals? Just neat to see a civilized instrument for a more civilized time.
Personally I think it’s cool to say “this was (insert guitar hero) guitar”, but I can’t agree more with the ending statement. If it gives you the drive to play then it’s worth it’s weight in gold. If anything drives me to spend money it’s the desire to buy now what will become a 51 nocaster in the future. Who knows what the future will bring. All gear is being made mass production style so in 50 years there is going to be an ocean of “vintage guitars”. I try to support and follow the boutique companies that seem to have no desire to be bigger than what they already are. Basically building to order everything they do. Plus they’re more in the community. It gives them the feeling like they’re just like me and my friends. I don’t know, I just prefer when people and their companies have a more human feel and not a cold machine just trying to make another million. No one needs millions. We can live very comfortably on 500,000 of whatever currency a year. Even 250,000 a year. I love guitars and gear and music. I love it!

I suffered damage at a Pil gig in LA in the mid 80s. Lyndon played a Pistols tune. Crowd went ape shit. I fell and had people trampling on me. Thought I was at the Who in Cincinnati or the Hillsborough horror, though it may have been before the futball tragedy. Scared the shit out of me.

Prince played Boss pedals, Slash recorded Appetite on a knock-off Gibson and Kurt Cobain played pawn shop guitars. I understand people's interest in history or emulating their heroes but I would rather do my own thing, have my own stories attached to the gear I use.
The only "vintage" guitar I have is a 1960 Guild Starfire but I have a couple of pretty nice Suhr and PRS guitars. But none of them sound any better than my $125 Kramer Focus IIIS with $340 worth of Seymour Duncan Billy Gibbons Red Devil humbuckers. It stays in tune, plays great, and growls like a cornered wolverine when I tickle it.
I once "had to" play a Rickenbacker at a session, because "tone", although I'm pretty sure we could have gotten darn close to that "tone" with another guitar. I can't even remember the model of that Rickenbacker (black, 2 pieces white pickguard, 2 single coil PUs, pointy cutaway horns and hole, ...). That guitar literally fought me the whole session through, and I really didn't like the neck. I guess some people must like these guitars though, 'cause they've managed to sell them. Anyway, I will never say it's good or bad, but I don't think Rickenbacker is the "thing" for me. One of my current favorite guitars is a ... tah daaaah ... used Ibanez S420 I got for 170E. I shimmed the neck angle and locked the neck into place with guitar picks (yes, I did), and I leveled and polished the frets to perfection. It has that crazy "Edge Zero" whammy bar with locking nut, and the 4th pickup switch position gives a great neck single coil pickup sound without hum. I don't really understand how the switching works on that guitar (which PUs it activates and how), but I get the humbucker tones plus 1 great noiseless single coil tone. And the neck shape on this guitar is an absolute dream (for me). So, in the end, the best guitar is the guitar that your fingers and your ears love. That's all.
I have a 68 SG, and 2 modern SGs, i can say with no doubt that the 68 sounds much much better, it feels better, the vibration, the tuning, the feeling in your hand
I've watched Brandon Acker do this same thing but with classical guitars, what a different world. Electric guitars "John Lennon played that but it's falling apart and doesn't play well? I'll give you 250k!". Classical world "It's one of the most finely crafted guitars with the rarest wood in the world and it plays and sounds like a heavenly dream? I'll give you 250k for it".
They blind tested concert violinists a few years and had them play and listen to vintage Stratovarius and modern violins. At the end of the blind test, the modern instruments had a slight lead. Granted, the modern instruments were expensive, as in tens of thousands, but not expensive as in hundreds of thousand or millions that the true vintage cost.

Yeah the Jonh Lennon guitar is certainly not something I'd seek out but its a cool slice of history and definitely a part of history that shaped everything we have in the guitar world now.
If I could play any vintage guitar, It would be the first Gibson Explorer. For pedals it would have to be the Klon Centaur. For Bass it would have to be an original 54 p bass
if i was rich id own a 1978-1981 dean z, or a 79 z reissue in blue burst, maybe silver burst, dean 4 5 and 6 string spalted basses, dean cadi, and the dean acoustic v. 🍻
In my experience/opinion it’s less about the age and more about how it got played a lot. All my favorite vintage guitars have been VERY used and worn in and feel great because of that. I have a 62 SG Junior that’s well used and I love, any time I run into the same guitar of similar age I like to play it to compare and the cleanest closet queen examples always leave me with the same impression a brand new guitar does. Just meh, feels stiff, not inspiring. Acoustic guitars I do think the age effects the tone as well as the feel, but honestly guitar makers now are getting so good at drying out woods, rolling fingerboards, wearing down finishes, etc that new guitars keep getting better and better sometimes.
I’ve played a few ‘59’s, a couple of 58’s and 60’s, EC’s black Strat and one of Jimmy Page’s Less Pauls. My playing didn’t get any better, but I’m glad I had a chance!✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶
Yea, most of the music by guitar gods of the 1960s and 1970s was played on used instruments that were not real expensive at the time. Alvin Lee's ES335 was bought used for around $200. Page's LP was given to him by Joe Walsh and Page used a not very expensive used Tele for much of the 1st album. Clapton has said he likes to buy used instruments and he play his modern signature Strat live now. If I bought an expensive vintage instrument, I don't think I would feel comfortable keeping it out on stand and playing it all the time. True expensive vintage guitars are for collectors and not for playing. I also don't buy into the statement that vintage instruments sound or play better than modern instruments.
Vintage has its place , not worth looking into for everyone, I personally popped for a fender vintage 2 51 tele that was on big sale, while it was more than I really wanted to spend, it was less than other places were selling it for, and for me , yeah, not completely like the OG , but close enough it gives me that vibe.Atvway less cost than an actual 51 tele. And I agree, if it works for you, it doesn’t matter how cheap or new it is.
Seriously, I would never want to play or sound like Lennon.... nothing against him, but you learn to play an instrument be it guitar bass or drums to be your own musician & invent play & transcend wether you become a god to the masses or not.
Based on trends already with 10-20 year old gear, I’d say no. It’s always “the old ones they don’t make anymore are better!” People always trying to pump up prices saying “when they made them in country A they were better than the ones made now in country B”
EVH's Frakenstrat is budget kit-tar. Its worth is because he played it. Les Pauls sucked until they didn't. Bad tone is just looking for the right song. In other words, scenes are parodies of themselves.
As you say, most of the best guitar-based rock was made on vintage instruments that weren’t vintage at the time. They were regular standard guitars that anyone could buy at the time. This idea that every vintage guitar that still exists now is somehow beyond perfection is rubbish. Like any standard Strat or Les Paul you can buy now, some are going to be ok, some will be rubbish and some may be great.
I get the collector mindset, but from a musician standpoint, I really don't get the fascination with vintage gear. An old instrument is not going to make you a better musician. In fact, you'll probably play and sound much better on a good modern one that's a fraction of the price, because they're just made better now. There's nothing special about the old ones, they're just good instruments from their time. Hell, some of them weren't even good back then. I love Les Paul/ Jr.s, but the ones that were used on the classic records were made cheaply for beginners.
Vintage anything just seems like a pain in the ass😅 Sourcing parts, repair costs… on and on. Honestly I believe a lot of it is baby boomer generation hype

Sometimes you'll start playing and I'll think, "oh wow, he must not have been playing the last year or so" or "weird that he is playing that overtly novice, seemingly sloppy passage" and then in the next second you'll rip off a really cool lick.. I make a habit of not picking things up with a price tag of a house because then I can't drop things that have a price tag of a house.

If I could play any vintage guitar, It would be the first Gibson Explorer. For pedals it would have to be the Klon Centaur. For Bass it would have to be an original 54 p bass

In my experience/opinion it’s less about the age and more about how it got played a lot. All my favorite vintage guitars have been VERY used and worn in and feel great because of that. I have a 62 SG Junior that’s well used and I love, any time I run into the same guitar of similar age I like to play it to compare and the cleanest closet queen examples always leave me with the same impression a brand new guitar does. Just meh, feels stiff, not inspiring. Acoustic guitars I do think the age effects the tone as well as the feel, but honestly guitar makers now are getting so good at drying out woods, rolling fingerboards, wearing down finishes, etc that new guitars keep getting better and better sometimes.

I’ve played a few ‘59’s, a couple of 58’s and 60’s, EC’s black Strat and one of Jimmy Page’s Less Pauls. My playing didn’t get any better, but I’m glad I had a chance!✌️😎🎸🎶🎵🎶

Yea, most of the music by guitar gods of the 1960s and 1970s was played on used instruments that were not real expensive at the time. Alvin Lee's ES335 was bought used for around $200. Page's LP was given to him by Joe Walsh and Page used a not very expensive used Tele for much of the 1st album. Clapton has said he likes to buy used instruments and he play his modern signature Strat live now. If I bought an expensive vintage instrument, I don't think I would feel comfortable keeping it out on stand and playing it all the time. True expensive vintage guitars are for collectors and not for playing. I also don't buy into the statement that vintage instruments sound or play better than modern instruments.
Hendrix could’ve walked out at Woodstock in 1969 with a Squier Affinity Strat and he would have tore it up just the same
I’d buy a birth year Fender Telecaster Deluxe, or an old Martin 000 size acoustic in mahogany.

Vintage has its place , not worth looking into for everyone, I personally popped for a fender vintage 2 51 tele that was on big sale, while it was more than I really wanted to spend, it was less than other places were selling it for, and for me , yeah, not completely like the OG , but close enough it gives me that vibe.Atvway less cost than an actual 51 tele. And I agree, if it works for you, it doesn’t matter how cheap or new it is.
Seriously, I would never want to play or sound like Lennon.... nothing against him, but you learn to play an instrument be it guitar bass or drums to be your own musician & invent play & transcend wether you become a god to the masses or not.

Based on trends already with 10-20 year old gear, I’d say no. It’s always “the old ones they don’t make anymore are better!” People always trying to pump up prices saying “when they made them in country A they were better than the ones made now in country B”

As you say, most of the best guitar-based rock was made on vintage instruments that weren’t vintage at the time. They were regular standard guitars that anyone could buy at the time. This idea that every vintage guitar that still exists now is somehow beyond perfection is rubbish. Like any standard Strat or Les Paul you can buy now, some are going to be ok, some will be rubbish and some may be great.

I get the collector mindset, but from a musician standpoint, I really don't get the fascination with vintage gear. An old instrument is not going to make you a better musician. In fact, you'll probably play and sound much better on a good modern one that's a fraction of the price, because they're just made better now. There's nothing special about the old ones, they're just good instruments from their time. Hell, some of them weren't even good back then. I love Les Paul/ Jr.s, but the ones that were used on the classic records were made cheaply for beginners.

It was a prototype made in 1958. It's a semi-hollow guitar - Lennon's was unique in that it had no f-hole.

I don't mean this as an insult, just an observation... Tyler, you have some of the strangest, jankiest, and unorthodox technique I have ever seen. Sometimes you'll start playing and I'll think, "oh wow, he must not have been playing the last year or so" or "weird that he is playing that overtly novice, seemingly sloppy passage" and then in the next second you'll rip off a really cool lick..
