  • Mick is wondering how happy he could be with the bare minimum of guitars, amps and pedals. Erm…
    Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    Welcome to the show! I was recently introduced to Keith Williams from Five Watt World - please check out his awesome UA-cam channel here: / @fivewattworld
    Keith’s core philosophy is ‘The Most Music From The Least Gear’ and there is something just so beautifully balanced and right about it. How far you want to take that philosophy is entirely another matter of course, so in this video I work through my own thought process on the subject, based on the things I really love about sounds and playing. I take in some of my favourite textures and combinations along the way, before playing a track at the end to provide some musical context.
    Please enjoy the episode!

    Controversial opinion: there’s nothing wrong with being a collector. I can’t afford a bunch of fancy high-end guitars, but if someone else can, who cares? They’re not hurting anybody. Having 50 overdrive pedals goes to help a bunch of small boutique business owners have a career they love. Some people like a stripped down rig, some people like a massive arsenal. No one is being hurt. Why do guitar players care so much about what others do?

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  3 роки тому +21

      Nothing controversial about this at all Keith. I feel the same way about cars. I’d really really really love a nice 911 and I get annoyed when some people have four of them. But, I’m happy for them. Awesome car.

    • @SSStinger6
      @SSStinger6 3 роки тому +3

      @@ThatPedalShow I also don’t think there is anything inconsistent with what Keith is asking - having gone through a few of his vids (thanks for making me aware!) I sort of boil down his point(s) to:
      - Understand what you are trying to do, what activity you are trying to engage in.
      - Have the gear, and in some ways only the gear, that helps you do those things.
      There is no implicit judgement, there, on the an individual’s intent or purpose - and thus no judgement on ‘how many’ things one may have.
      But it’s an interesting question to pose - ‘what are you trying to do...other than just gather’...and take it from there.

Of course there are so much useful info about gear on this channel, but it’s always about Dan and Mick sharing their passion and getting creative with these videos that makes all of this so much more entertaining and actually helps us to not forget that music is about creating what you love and the journey towards that.

    How many guitars is enough? - Just one more...that's always the answer. But in all seriousness, not having enough gear isn't the end of the world. The amount of sounds you can get with limited gear is astounding if the time is put in. But it's about what sounds good to you as an individual, if it sounds good to you that's all you need.

    When covid-lockdown started here in L.A., I started buying pedals out of boredom - always an amp distortion with a tube screamer for a boost .. for decades. I sing and play rhythm, so I rarely even needed the boost.
    I stumbled-across this show early-on and your playing blew my mind. Most American gear-channel hosts are metal-centric ... not my thing. Now I have 30 + pedals & have improved to the point that I’m considering going 3-piece. Pedals inspired me to play more & get better.
    We’re very close to being turned-loose - which means I can start rehearsing the stuff I’ve been writing with other guys. I’ve never been more confident in my playing.
    Thank you for the inspiration & advice. This show has been a very valuable oasis for an at-risk guy who’s been locked-down for a year this Sunday. ☮️

    About a year ago I built a small board with five pedals: tumnus, phase 95, ep boost, sp compressor, flashback mini delay on a small pedaltrain board using pedaltrain's powersupply. My large board (with 17+ pedals, many being expensive boutique units) was too much to haul to a weekly jam with some of the neighborhood rockers, and i was worried about damage or theft. The consequence has been that the large board has been largely ignored lately. Sometimes i miss the wha and fuzz, but it is amazing how much music can be found in the small board. Thank you for your time and attention. Cheers from Michigan.

    I think gathering gear has more to do with an experimental mindset and the musical journey of finding your sound. Than about owning stuff. Alot of people sell the stuff they don't need anymore once they have found their sound or the sound they are happy with and inspires them.

    Hey Mick. I've been playing professionally for some 50 years. In all that time, I've remained committed to my fingers rather than the gear. Not because I necessarily like it that way, just because there aren't enough hours in the day to get my fingers to do what I want them to do. Then came lock down and all the gigs dried up and I found myself with a bit more time on my hands and without gigs to practice for, a touch less motivation. I decided to "allow" myself to explore the mysteries of tone. That was a year and a half ago and I now find myself with two pedal boards and a couple new guitars and an often confused zeal for how do I turn all this gear into music. In my newfound quest I do find myself watching videos like yours all to often rather than working out how to get the sounds I want out of my guitar (and amp and pedals and cables). However, I am having a GREAT time and approaching music in new ways that has opened me up and improved my capacity to both listen and play. Hell, I even play my acoustic differently these days, paying attention to nuances of tone that completely escaped me in the past. So your right - it is the journey that matters and the players willingness to stay open and welcome the beginner no matter how experienced you may be. And anything that kindles that creative spark is well worth the price of admission. That said, I did recently buy the most important piece of kit of my life. A TPS T-shirt. So now, my capacity to play won't really matter as now I can wear the shirt to shows and stand in the back of the club with a slightly disdainful look on my face and feel fully accomplished without ever touching a guitar! Thanks!

      @ThatPedalShow  2 роки тому +1

      Ha! THanks so much Vince, not least for buying the shirt. Please make sure your arms are folded at the back of that club. Hahaha! It’s a continual journey - I’m totally with you. And on that journey you become interested in various things along the way. Thanks for being with us!

      Good story. My's something like that. Had G A S real bad while trying to build my board. Once done I've lost the G A S and haven't got anything but replacement items lately; strings, tubes. Now I could live with 2 guitars 1 amp 1 board and a box I got of anything hookup for stage; wireless, D I , extra cords strings picks, music, tuner ,capo. Anything needed for working on stage. I usual don't even bring stands anymore. But I got everything to put 6 people to work including 3 singers. Most of all that stuff was so cheap or free that I just couldn't refuse it. But when you don't use it you still have to upkeep and store all this.

    • @DavidGarcia-kw4sf
      @DavidGarcia-kw4sf 2 роки тому

      I'm getting back into playing after a long break but I can relate. I recently doubled my guitar collection from two to four. But I still have just one amp and two pedals, one of which is getting repaired. But I'll probably get a couple more pedals just because of what I have learned here on this channel and that should be quite a bit of fun, and that's kind of the point.
