The more I listen to no/low-buy definitions, the more I feel it's just the way normal buying habits should be. Buying a new product only if you used up the previous one, questioning (and second-questioning) the use and purpose of what you want to buy before you actually buy it, not buying only because it's pretty/trendy/limited edition/recommended, looking at what you already have before purchasing something new, making sure you have the founds to actually buy stuff...etc. Aren't all of these part of a normal healthy consumerism? The fact that we have to call it a no/low-buy feels weird to me now. Just some thought I had :)
I feel this so hard. Like I love the beauty channels I follow, and I find it very worrying when they start talking about their "low/no buys" because I then question if my habits are "normal". My default is a "low-buy" on most things. Is a shopping addiction considered normal? Is my personal shopping mentality "odd" idk.
I know right, this is what I do normally. I can't say how many times I've seen a guru rave about a palette, wanted it, slept on it for a few nights, then looked at it again and realised I basically already own those colours. I'm always calculating cost per pump on my foundations, avoiding buying backups, waiting for reviews on new products (often they're bad and I feel very relieved!) and going into any sale with a very clear and curated shopping list that I've thought about in advance to avoid impulse buying anything. When I shop I never buy more than one item in a category at a time, I force myself to at least try my new one first before grabbing another. I'm not on a low-buy, it's just what I've always done. This should be the norm.
@@CamilleonProductions usually when I see a new pallette, I immediately look at my collection and usually end up thinking "well nothing is unique" so then I just continue looking at the promo pictures. Pallettes are super pretty to look at lol.
When you were talking about the fantasy self idea. I relate to this so much. This year I fantasized about the Marc Jacob's Coconut bronzer and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting edit 4 palette. I spent a combined amount of R2850 on those two products. About $200. I'm a student and those were my breaking points. I couldn't afford them yet I bought them thinking they would make my life better. I got them and...they are just face products, they are just powders. They are not that special and I should never have spent that money. The MJ bronzer didnt even suit my pale as paper skintone...duh. Anyways these happenings have awoken me, in conjunction to your influence, to do my no/low buy in 2019. I'm tired of consumerism and over spending. Thank you for inspiring me and many others by voicing your inner findings that we may not have understood until you explained it so well.
Tamarind, I moved to Ireland from SA a year ago and I STILL struggle with the Euro. Everything sounds so cheap and the amount of makeup I procured this year is really embarrassing TBH. Just today my Beauty Bay package arrived, just under 300 euro. I did a quick conversion in my head and the amount that I spent would basically be a teacher's salary. That's disgusting to me, no matter how beautiful the products. I'm going on a low-buy in 2019 but it's more of a no buy with a little escape route to reduce anxiety levels. The irony is not lost on me. I have the Edit 4 Unlocked. It's nice but I haven't really used it - and I've had it for almost 2 months. I should be ecstatic that I own it and my only reaction is 'meh'. It's saddening. This not the person I want to be. So yes, here's to us and here's to reclaiming our own financial emancipation in 2019 and beyond.
@@mburrito57939 how are you enjoying Ireland? I have an Irish passport and would love to visit or even live there one day. Yes, I started watching UA-cam 2 years ago and for about a year I was obsessed with having all the new things. And you probably know how hard it is to get those makeup products from the UK and US into SA. I've been abit better the last 6 months but not good enough. Heres to our no/low buys for 2019 🙌🏻🥂xx I'm doing the same as you where I'm doing basically a no buy but also allowing myself to buy a certain amount if makeup and skincare this year so I dont go crazy xx
I'm loving Ireland! I enjoy the rain and the cooler weather, so that's not a major issue for me. Living expenses are insane. Traffic puts Joburg to shame. I miss biltong & guinea fowl ;) but things work for the most part & the personal freedom is wonderful. Even if it's only for a year or two, definitely give Ireland a shot. The people are lovely and culturally very similar to Saffers. We'll rock this no/low buy thing! Xx
don't worry guys, remember I'm a dancer! I'm actually very careful about my feet. My sneakers are fine in terms of support, they're just getting really grimy and possibly a bit suspect in terms of smelliness. That was what I meant by "healthy" for my feet, I should have been more clear. If they really stopped being okay to wear, I'd switch to my gym sneakers, which are in much better shape because I don't work out enough, LOL!
You have completely inspired me, Hannah!! 2019 will be my NO BUY YEAR!!! Thank you for all you’ve done in documenting your own experiences this past year. I cannot wait to see how it changes me and my shopping habits. Love you soooo much! 😘😘😘
I feel like your channel has cleansed my head in such a significant way, the normalized over-consumption that is so common on youtube has been really hard to watch since I discovered your channel. It's so intense how much influencers... influence your brain in the deepest way! hauls I used to watch made me feel like constantly buying a few things a month was nothing compared to their hundreds and hundreds of dollars, but I am only now realizing how many of these purchases were still impulsive and excessive for me. Thank you for doing what you do!!
It's really interesting how we call influencers "influencers" but still have a hard time realizing/accepting that what they're influencing is US! At least for me, it's so easy to think "Oh, I'm an intelligent, thoughtful person, so I'm above all that. I can watch loads of influencer content and it won't affect me at all..." But it hasn't been until I really accepted, "Yes, this can and does influence me," that I'm able to take that into account as I'm decision-making.
@@eikawithac that is so true + ironic!! (i didn't even think of that, I just use the term because I don't want to call them "gurus") I am writing a paper in university on how internet users are the commodity of the "free" internet and have spent so much time being honest with myself about how no matter how smart or self aware I think I am I am still influenced by all types of online marketing!! I felt proud not to be clicking on facebook ads until they perfectly marketed to my taste in books and I admitted to myself that I was going to buy something because of a facebook ad 😂😥
You made a statement at the end of your video that you “refrained myself from spending money on anything “. It made me think of your video that you spent $1k on a no buy year. It made me reflect on myself how I will make statements like that to myself. The reality is that I do spend money on myself but my thinking is that I didn’t. There’s a thinking we denied ourselves to a greater degree than was actually true. It’s an exaggeration that I feel could justify a purchase. A purchase may be NECESSARY or wanted but the expression is not accurate. So much of your video today rang loudly in me. I look forward to more of your videos.
Thanks for the extra content lately, Hannah! I’ve definitely noticed and enjoyed the extra treat of getting to sit down, drink my coffee, and get some additional inspiration several times a week. 😊
I recently bought an Aspinal of London bag, the pot of money I used to purchase it with I had been adding money to for five years, waiting to find the perfect bag for me. And I did! It was £600 🤢, but to be quite frank not once have I felt regret or apprehension over how much I spent on some sewn together leather that will eventually become worn out. To me it was worth spending five years setting money aside for an item that I adore!
Only 10 minutes in the video and I already feel inspired and motivated. I think that the concept of the fantasy self is really a key issue to reflect on if we really want to change the behaviours and be more aware of why we buy so much. The real question is how do we create the fantasy self without objects and without buying?
Watching your no buy year has really inspired me to investigate the emotional place that makeup/skincare holds in my life. Thank you for that! Oh and by the way, for a reasonably priced brow gel, I would suggest the maybelline brow precise fiber volumizer eyebrowgel. I too used to be dependent on a high end brow gel (the lancome one) and went out looking for a cheaper alternative. Now I actually prefer the maybelline one! The colors are ashy and it holds my brows all day. I will say that the brush is a little weird, so be sure to wipe off the excess beforehand so you don't get too much on your brows. Thanks again for your great series!
You have such a calming air about you, and so when I do find myself gnashing my teeth over yet another palette I am not going to buy, I breathe deeply three times, watch you and I feel calmer and more in control (and richer) - thank you xx
I've been watching your videos for a while, and I must say that you have the most beautiful eye looks. It seems lately that tutorials are out of fashion, but if you make one video someday, that would be lovely. Thank you for all the inspiration! I'll be starting a no buy, low buy next year
my grandma's cat goes outside to do her business (or so grandma hopes) but then the cat goes back in the house and goes potty in one of the big plant pots when grandma isn't looking haha
A friend if mine had a similar problem with her cats. She ended up placing a layer of pinecones over the surface of the potting soil. Worked like a charm. Cheers from Idaho!
I use NYX control freak and the other day a friend asked me if I used the blood of scarified virgins to keep my eyebrows up that way so that might be helpful for you.
I cannot get this one to work for me. I have extremely curly and unruly brows and this does actual nothing. I was so bummed after hearing such good things.
This one doesn’t work for me with truly unruly brows. I’ve also tried the Anastasia one. Still haven’t found one that works but I haven’t tried the one she has.
I keep a list on my phone of items that peak my interest, and when I look back at older entries, I usually have forgotten about them and the lust for them is gone. Go figure 😂.
The Anastasia pencils usually go on sale for 1/2 price twice a year at ULTA during their 21 days of beauty sale... just in case you don’t find your perfect color in a drugstore brand. Also, I love the NYX control freak eyebrow gel. It has excellent hold and staying power.
I think it’s wonderful how your thought process and relationship to buying things has progressed throughout your no buy. You have put a lot of thought into why you still might want something or might not, and to not have a sense of urgency to buy something the minute your no buy is up is growth and change.
Love those handbags at the end! I've done that myself, saved up to buy an expensive bag. The thing about doing that is that it makes you really appreciate it when you get it. My problem, though, is that it makes me want to save up and buy ANOTHER bag....sigh. Spending is such a trap. Oh, and a little hint for those hair-covered sweaters: if you have a dryer, you can quickly de-hair anything. Get an old teeshirt, wet it, wring it out, then throw it in the dryer with the shirt. If you have a dryer sheet, even better. Throw that in. Then run the dryer on heat for about 15 minutes; check to see how the shirt is. If still hairy, throw it in for another 15 minutes. Your shirt will come out hairless, minus any wrinkles (I use this tip to "iron" clothes I don't want to iron), and the dryer sheet will make it anti-static and impart a nice scent.
Yes to the fantasy not matching reality. When I would buy anything that an influencer mentioned I would always be disappointed when it didn’t look the same on myself. I’ve come to realize that even thought some influencer aren’t makeup artist , they still probably have hours and hours of practice of doing their makeup so that’s what makes the biggest difference. I spend 15 minutes on makeup vs someone who spend 1-2 hours and it’s their job to have perfect makeup. Thank you for making videos 💜
I’m so happy for you, and your channel’s growth, Hannah! Not just because you’re growing subs, but because your influence is spreading and changing others. I’m loving the extra content too btw 😁
I'm glad I found you a few weeks ago, it could be a sign that I shoul go for a no-buy next year :P also, the fact that you still manage to put out a lot of videos is so inspiring; I wonder what would many of the big youtubers do if the weren't able to get new products all the time...
Great video, very interesting. I always say if you keep something on a wish list for at least a month or so, you can avoid a lot of the hype/impulse emotion and buy with a clear head.
I highly recommend Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon, as winter perfume. There’s also a rollerball at Sephora, I hope you smell it before you commit to the Replica one, I think you’ll really like it.
Elf, loreal, and NYX all have pretty comparable ultra skinny brow pencils (with varying shade ranges), but if you can find a shade in it I'd suggest the elf one on merit of I have the easiest time with it and it's the cheapest of the three!
Loved this video! Please film your depotting process, that would be great to see! Congrats on the new subscribers you gained the past couple of days :)
I used to swear by the brow wiz, but the NYX micro brow pencil is WONDERFUL, the shade range has great ashy tones and the formula works just as well as the brow wiz. You should definitely try it out!
Thank you Hannah that you treat us with so many extra video’s lately,I realy enjoy these so much.I am so proud at you that you did your no buy year so well, and it was a difficult no buy because you were not only allow to buy make-up,but you were so harsh for yourself, that you haven’t bought anything for yourself,or for the house, realy huuuuge compliments for that. You have a very small wishlist for yourself, after that harsh no buy,but it may be sound strange, but I expected that, because you grown so much during your no buy, that your mindset is completely different, and materialism is not something that you find important after your no buy.I only did a no buy with make-up,and I Will go on with it because I still have way to many make-up,and my urge to buy new is gone,I see the same thing happening with you,the urge to buy new things is gone, you only want to buy things that you or your household needs, and there is no feeling of hurry to buy those things,no you need them,so you Will buy this once, when the time is there,or you find it on sale or on a barget.I hope that that feeling Will stay a long time at me because for me that’s the biggest lesson that I learned on my no buy,and I hope that that same feeling last a long time for you to,because I think that for you it Will be one of the biggest lessons to,last year.I still go on with my no buy with make-up,but I also want to buy a lot less ather stuff comming year, like clothes and housewear,I Will buy things if I need it but I don’t want to buy it because of the urge that I need to buy it,and I am pretty confident that I Will buy a lot less comming year, and the things I Will buy,Will be things that I buy after I thought it over and over,I don’t want to stay buying things spontanius, that I don’t realy need.I don’t include purchases that I need to do for my Son or my husband. And the purchases that I Will make,I Will make for myself or the house Will be at second hand stores,I always loved these stores and their prices, and I love to give things a second life.If I make declutters,I always bring my stuff to these stores, after I let my family and friends look if they want something. You realy did fantastic Hannah, and I loved to see the differences in thinking, your Total mindset, all that you shared with us last year, and I think that I am not the only one who learned so much last year, but I think that most subscribers did.You realy did a fantastic job, filming everything, and taking us along with you on your journey.I can’t thank you enough, because without your films and your learning phases, and your peptalk, and your fantastic responses,I don’t know if I could make this year of my no buy without your fully support and help, and your possitivity.I am so gratefull for everything you did last year.Hannah, you are a fantastic person,I love each film of you,I love your calmness in your voice,I hope that comming year Will be even more fantastic,Hannah I love you,a big virtual hug, wendy❤️
It's heartening to see such an elegant, thoughtful, and intellectually brilliant young person! I'm enjoying your videos, and learning a lot! Cheers from The Hague!
I can watch you all day. You are so intellectual and easy to listen to. Thank you so much for your inspirational videos. Everytime I watch a video that you put out, it makes me more and more excited for my no buy year! Cheers!
Shop Miss A has amazing magnetic palettes for $7.50 for the large ones and they're even cheaper for the smaller ones. I highly recommend those! The large ones have mirrors and strong magnets. Also, the NYX micro brow is a well known dupe for the Anastasia brow wiz.
I’ve been binge watching your videos because I want to do a no buy in 2019. You’re so articulate and I really appreciate your insights into your process. I’m glad you’re not buying the DE protini moisturizer. I was convinced I absolutely needed it and that it would transform my skin, but i really didn’t notice any difference. Once I ran out of it I didn’t repurchase. An idea for you to try for eyebrow gel is the ELF eyebrow gel. Its cheap and it works really well for me. I also love the Wet n Wild ultimate brow kit in ash brown. I keep trying to use up my NYX pencil and milani brow gel, but I always return to the brow kit from wet n wild, and I’ve bought it twice now. Such a good little drugstore gem!
it is so interesting to see how your wish list has changed. I keep a list of items that I would like to try or buy, and it is amazing how I often I change my mind after I wait a few months. I also track all of my purchases in a spreadsheet, and I have coded it to to compare my true monthly spend (by category) vs. my projected monthly spend. I know that budgets and spreadsheets are not for everyone, but the power that comes with seeing where my money goes is fantastic! I do not want to be an enabler, but I think that Brija has lovely duochrome (loose) eye shadows.
I just found your channel and am already so inspired by you! You have such a soothing voice, you're beautiful and you speak so eloquently. So impressed!
This was so interesting to watch. I love how much more practical your new list is compared to the list from May! This video was super motivating to me, three months into my no-buy year. I did some (rules-approved) homeware shopping on Black Friday weekend and I've been struggling a little with wanting clothes, jewelry, and yes, a handbag in the subsequent weeks. It's always good to be reminded that the feeling fades. Speaking of, I've been re-watching your old videos such that their timing corresponds with where I am in my no-buy year (i.e., I'm three months in, so I'm on your March videos [I'm falling behind]). It's cool to see how much more comfortable you seem in front of the camera now. I hope I'm not contributing to the embarrassment you've mentioned you sometimes feel about old videos -- your old content is great! But there are subtle changes that seem to me to reflect increasing comfort with being on camera. Perhaps it's also that you've had time to fully develop the style of your channel.
I agree, my comfort with the camera has changed dramatically! And my editing ability, too. I've been re-watching some old videos as I prepare to reflect on the year and it's strange to see such a chance in demeanor and mindset over the course of what felt like a pretty quick year :)
How you were with house plants is how I am with notebooks. I have lined ones, grid ones, dotted ones...so I have them for all the different things I want to write about. I have so many that I need to use up but I still look at them when I'm out! No more notebooks for me!
Hi Hannah! Congratulations on finishing no buy strong!! Please bring back shop my stash. I truly enjoy that series. I think deporting idea will be so fun. I did it with my color pop pallete. Color pop pallates are magnetic. If you cut off the cardboard, it is a self made z pallette. Not that you need to do that. I did it with mine and organized the colors and put some singles in jt. It is so inspiring!! Great idea!!
Hannah, your no buy year has inspired me so much that I also started mine in July. I also stopped watching beauty and makeup channels and UA-camr! I am so glad that I came across your channel. Thank you ❤️
the tarte magnetic palettes are fantastic! they're a little cheaper than z-palettes but BEAUTIFUL quality, super sturdy, large beautiful mirrors. highly recommended!
If you keep an eye on HauteLook, they sometimes have the tarte magnetic palettes on their flash sale for 50% off. There’s usually only 1 cover design option at each sale but i got a pretty one a couple months ago. The mirror inside is excellent so i use it for travel.
First - try NYX Microbrow pencils. I've used them for years (Ash Brown) and can't see myself ever spending up on a brow pencil again. I know a lot of people swear by something from Mabylline, but I can't offer specifics. Second - I find it interesting (and telling!) that this series is why I found and subscribed to your channel. In the past I was most interested in "Yes" Buy videos. More specifically, "Yes Buy NOW" videos. :) But I think the idea of moving toward your philosophy on makeup has been brewing in me for a while, and discovering and watching your videos just gave life to those feelings. In many ways I'd already been on this track, ie keeping items on my wish list for months before either taking the plunge or taking a pass because the desire had ultimately faded. My 2019 will be a much more thoughtful and a much less impulsive year. I've realized that I love what I have in my current collection and don't want anything coming in to compete with those items. I can't say that I'll be on a no buy, but I will be watching a lot less You Tube. UA-cam tends to shout out reasons why my current collection is incomplete, when, in reality, it's more than complete. Thanks so much for this thought provoking and honest look at makeup.
Not sure what shade you were wearing in the ABH brow wiz but I wear taupe and think the NYX Microbrow and the L'oreal Brow definer are pretty good. Also, as others have said, the NYX brow gel is very good. I have the Givanchy brow gel too and like the little brush but if you are ok with a bigger one the NYX is good.
If you like the Givenchy brush could you keep it when you finish the Givenchy, clean it and just use it with the NYX product? Like just keep it with your other brushes and tools and wash it and just use it instead of the nyx one, like you would use a disposable or spare mascara wand if you were using yours on someone else?
Control freak by NYX is supposed to be really good for your eyebrows as a clear gel. You have been so inspiring all year. I never did do a proper no buy. But I have learned so much about shopping my stash. Learning to love what I have already. I don't think I really need anything at all. Maybe a stronger summer sunscreen but that will be a need so I don't burn to a crisp the first sunny day. So, that is an obvious exception. I've learned I just have so much. No complaints. It does me good to look and say I'm happy with what I own. Thank you so much, for your supporting role in my mind set change.
have you tried using hairspray with a clean spoolie for your brows? that's something I do when I really wanna keep them up, especially since I have trouble using up hairspray otherwise haha. ooh and soap brows are slightly less durable but give such a nice and fluffy look (wanted to give some tips on things you might already have since I loved the anastasia brow gel but refused to spend so much on it and love saving money where possible)
It's almost half way through December, and my no-buy December is still going strong :) I agree with you on the idea of being able to spend money on one or two good quality (maybe a little pricey) things because you save up for it/them, and not just doing impulse purchase and not knowing what you're spending on.
I do like your thoughts and perspective. I started working my first adult job this year and I rarely buy make up anymore. My skincare admittedly is quite expensive. In addition to expensive clothes and shoes. But I've always found more pleasure in buying one or two expensive items rather than 10 less quality items.
Super interested in your brow whiz pencil because that’s what I use. I’m committed to cruelty free so maybe a NYX or something will do for me? Let’s see!
I bought a window perch for my fuzzball, and she looooves it!! It sticks on with suction cups (2 at the bed, and 2 connected to cables to stick above) and it works amazingly well. It's never fallen, and the cables are strong enough for her to nibble on and not break. It sounded kinda gimmicky, but it's def a must!
I love your taste in handbags! they are a weakness of mine, the pictures you showed on screen had me fantasizing about "who" I could be with that kind of bag even though I am happy with the ones I have! I am still torn on whether that kind of fantasy is positive self-creation, like an identity moodboard, or whether we shouldn't be relying on material things to try and express ourselves in the first place...I feel like as a visual artist it's a hard internal battle to face for people into building personal aesthetics/admiring beautiful art (on the face/body/etc).
FYI I just bought a small magnetic palette from Make Up For Ever from Sephora for 2 dollars (its misleading because it’s called xl on sephora...I was surprised 😐)
I get the giggles every time you talk about "By the Fireplace." That's my husband's signature scent, and I literally told him last weekend "you know you smell like Hannah, right?" Needless to say, he wasn't amused. Ha!
ah, amazing! Ah Courtney I have some pictures and thank-yous to send you and my inbox just keeps getting fuller and fuller, don't worry, I haven't forgotten you :) I should be able to get through it all this weekend. Your last message was much appreciated. xoxoxoxoxox
@@HannahLouisePoston P.S.: Just in case you didn't see Samantha R. talk about this awesome looking palette... Seems like a good fit for your aesthetic 😉 saltnewyork.com/
New subbie here. I was watching your channel yesterday on your no-buy and how categorize your products and its a good idea. I have done some decluttering this year and this where I have realized that some products I dont need or rarely use. So I have decided to only buy a product if its works and if I ran out of the particular product. Your channel is really informative. Keep up the good work. Cheers
The L'Oreal brow pencil (the skinny one) is a great one. Their brow gels are also really good. The nyx control freak is super good. Your channel is so refreshing! 💜
In my experience the ABH brow pencil is worth the money (especially if bought when 20% off) because the formula and shades are so perfect. One ABH pencil has literally lasted me two years with regular use. I think I'd end up spending more money trying out drugstore pencils since the shades are usually off (too warm for me), and I seem to go through one drugstore pencil in just a few months. But I hope that you find a great one!
It just dawned on me why people keep saying you are so eloquent- you remind me of my English teachers in school! Being a francophone, I have learnt English the way you speak it! (if I were, not ending your sentences with prepositions, etc.) :) I love, love, love your channel. I thought I was a trend-setter wanting to do my own no-buy year!!! LOL I will binge-watch your channel during the Holidays as I believe I have so much to learn from you. Looking forward to see what your project for next year will be!
You hit the nail on the head when you explained how we think and lust about make up. It isn’t just about the make up at ALLLLLL. It’s completely this thought and fantasy in our head of what our life might be like if we just get the chance to use the product. In the end it’s always a bit disappointing when it doesn’t change our lives in some big way.
I have been excited for this video. I was really curious how your list had changed. I frequently have wishlist items sitting on a list for an extended period of time (years) and wonder if that means I don’t really want it or need it. Sometimes I buy those items and I’m almost always let down. But I find it interesting how our wants and needs change. And now I’m obsessed with those bags! One of those may be on my Christmas list for next year. I also went on a hunt for drugstore brow products. I love the L’Oréal brow definer. I don’t know if they will have a shade to your liking but I love light brunette for my light red hair. In the brow wiz I use soft brown and for the dipbrow caramel for reference so I do put a little warmth in my brows.
Wow, 801 comments. So, not sure if Adept palettes have been mentioned but they have excellent magentic palettes. They also sell magentic stickers for non-magnetized pans. They do have a travel palette, but not 6 pan. Love this series!
Soap & Glory Archery Sculpt & Set is the best setting gel I have used. Brows don’t budge without being crunchy. The pencil part is great, very realistic color.
Suggestion for brow gel - you can buy hard hold hair gel (or use what you have at home for hair) and use a clean brow spoolie from old brow gel to apply! It’s insanely cheap this way. I’ve used the LALooks gel which has to be less than a penny per use. If it’s easier you can decant some into a little jar and use the spoolie in it that way.
Hi, from Cary, NC. I’m so glad that I found your channel. I’m inspired to do a No-Buy year, just went through ALL of my make-up, skincare, and shoes. Why would I have ever doubted a No-Buy year?
I really enjoyed your lists. It is interesting how that desire fades for items even if we don't get them. I have said for many years that I want a certain Louis Vuitton Handbag, but when my husband gave me the go-ahead to actually buy it, I didn't really want it...I think I like having the fantasy. I have been in the store, held the bag, had the "ok", credit card in hand and still didn't get it. I was also glad you mentioned some of the home and wardrobe items and not just the makeup, too. I was wondering what size shoes you wear? (I am size 11, so it's hard to find comfortable shoes, I hope you get some soon.) I am blessed to have so much kitchen stuff...probably for a lifetime. When Wendy gave you the tongs, I thought I could have sent you some extras..lol. I rarely even shop for that, but everyone gives it to me as gifts because they know how much I cook. I was wondering if you would have the wallet and sunglasses that you lost or broke earlier in the year. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. I am about to do some baking for a holiday cookie exchange with my neighbors this weekend. :)
The catrice microbrow pencil is amazing. Also check out essence brow pencils, I love them. When it comes to brow gel I love the Hean 3 in 1 brow mascara is awesome
so re: brow gel, i also need a vice grip brow gel because i'm armenian and my brows follow the laws of no mortal, and since running out of my nyx control freak clear brow gel, i've actually been using hair gel as a brow gel and it's been amazing
HI NISA! Thank you for the rec! I don't have any hair gel so I think it might cost as much as a brow gel to buy. But does the nyx one work for your brows???
For drugstore brow gel with a firm hold, the Soap and Glory Archery gel is the absolute best I've found. I bought a 2-in-1 with a pencil on the other end and used up both ends, and while I wasn't totally satisfied with the pencil (the nib was a little too thick), the gel was amazing. It's like liquid hairspray for your brows.
Samantha Ravndahl recently included a new magnetic palette in one of her videos by Salt New York. I have not personally tried yet but it looks quite sturdy and travel friendly and sleek. Love your videos and your message.
This year was the first year I‘ve written down what I spend on makeup and skincare. I‘m at ~2200 $. Mind you, I‘m a student and while I work I don’t feel like I have the money to spend that amount. I‘m not in debt or any of that but I do miss out on a lot of experiences like traveling, going out or even proper clothes because the money I spend on beauty has to be compensated elsewhere. And as for savings: I literally don’t have any. A 500$ check would immediately put me into a lot of trouble if I don’t have the option to pay in several payments over s few months. I‘m not sure I‘m ready for a no buy yet but knowing myself a low buy wouldn’t work...so a no buy is really the only option. I‘ve tried it several times but whenever I did I failed miserably. I was definitely not spending money on makeup...instead I bought jewelry, home decor and what not. Because hey, I was only on a no buy for make up 🤦🏻♀️ I‘m truly a genius lol I might add though that the jewelry at least has hold its value and I could probably sell it for more than I paid for it originally xD
Have you ever tried the soap brows method? I recently ran out of my clear boy brow and didn't want to buy another one immediately, so I've just been wetting a spoolie and rolling it around in some Dr. Bronner's bar soap, and it really is like glue. Super cost effective as well.
Oh yeah! I totally forgot to put that on this list. It's on my Xmas wishlist, so maybe I'm hoping that I won't need to buy it myself. But if I don't receive one as a gift, it will likely be one of the first things I buy. Good memory 😋
Love this!! It's so cool to see how your mindset has been transformed over this year... I can definitely identify with the "urgency" for wanting a new item! As for brow pencils, I have never personally used the ABH pencil, but my two favorite drugstore ones are the Ulta Ultra Slim Brow Pencil (Dark Brown) - $10, and Loreal Brow Stylist Definer (Dark Brunette) - $9. (I started using these instead of the $20 Urban Decay Microfine brow pencil). I am all about the cool undertones for my brows too. I would recommend not using the NYX brand - it's great quality but all the colors I tried were way too warm/reddish for me, and know that's what you said you want to stay away from! Hope this is helpful!
Have you tried hair spray for your brows? Just spray on a spoolie and comb through brows. Not sure if it would replace brow gel for you but worth a try. I personally prefer the look over brow gel. However, I do use the Essence Make Me Brow for the tint plus hold which saves time in the morning.
I've heard that the NYX Micro brow pencil is a dupe for the Anastasia one. I haven't tried the Anastasia pencil, but I use the NYX one and I love it! They have a good color selection, also many cool toned ones. The tip is really precise, and it's an automatic pencil (no need to sharpen). It's less than 10$. It's not too soft but not too hard, for my taste at least. Thank you for your amazing and inspiring content! I really love your intellectual approach on beauty, this is what youtube has been missing before you! :) I'm excited to see what you will do next year!
You are so right about new makeup being a fantasy and then when you get it, no matter how great it is, it doesn't transform you into that fantasy. I am such a sucker for new, colorful, sparkly things and I imagine how pretty they'd look and somehow I'd be transformed into a beautiful sparkly fairy lady if I had it. I've spent tons and I'm still not a sparkly fairy lady.
Hannah I researched a bit for my own magnetic palette needs and found that the Sephora zpalette was made from kinda cheap cardboard material and much preferred Tarte ones which went on crazy sale during the holidays. They’re super pretty and durable and spacious. Just my 2 cents ☺️
Good morning! What a year for you - and you've had so many fun collabs lately - congrats on the channel growth 😍😍 This fall, I went on a 2 week vacation and took only 1 brow product with me, and it was fantastic - soap & glory archery brow sculpting gel & crayon. It's not as fine tipped as the brow wiz, but it's lovely and has both the pencil and gel. 🤗
For brow gel, I used to use NYX Control Freak before switching to only using a brow pencil. For sneakers, check out Allbirds! They're a little expensive but beautiful and the most comfortable walking shoes I've ever owned. I've had mine for over a year and they look great!
I’ve heard the Elf brow pencil is really good although I haven’t tried it personally- Emily Noelle raves about it. Love your channel and have decided to do a no buy year! Also have you tried ‘soap brows’ - need a bar of soap and a spoolly. Pixiwoo have a good video on this as well as Desi Perkins and Katy
Just some thought I had :)
this makes so much sense!
Aimée Goudreau-Côté I agree it’s better to only get stuff you need or need to replace
Xx
If your sneakers are ill-fitting, you should buy new ones January 1, foot problems are no joke
Living In Chrysalis I have to agree with that. Feet are so important.
She shouldn't even be waiting until next year. It's not comparable to makeup or other unnecessary stuff.
@@d.on.in.a given the short time until January, I left that alone lol
don't worry guys, remember I'm a dancer!
Agreed. Once injured, it's really hard not to re-injure or even let your feet heal properly.
You have completely inspired me, Hannah!! 2019 will be my NO BUY YEAR!!! Thank you for all you’ve done in documenting your own experiences this past year. I cannot wait to see how it changes me and my shopping habits. Love you soooo much! 😘😘😘
Nani Leal I am starting a No Buy in 2019 as well!
Same here! Already getting organized!
Same!! Im excited since ive long to live minimalist.
yay! go everyone go!
Couldn't have said it better. Thank you so much for the inspiration. xo
Thank you for doing what you do!!
the mental shift for me this year has been really interesting, too! Thanks for sharing this!
(i didn't even think of that, I just use the term because I don't want to call them "gurus")
I am writing a paper in university on how internet users are the commodity of the "free" internet and have spent so much time being honest with myself about how no matter how smart or self aware I think I am I am still influenced by all types of online marketing!!
:)
To me it was worth spending five years setting money aside for an item that I adore!
wonderful!
Only 10 minutes in the video and I already feel inspired and motivated. I think that the concept of the fantasy self is really a key issue to reflect on if we really want to change the behaviours and be more aware of why we buy so much. The real question is how do we create the fantasy self without objects and without buying?
Hannah I want to know what’s your channel going to be about after the no buy... I’d love to know cuz I don’t want your channel to go anywhere.
don't worry, I'll have a new project in 2019! xo!
It's gonna be a low buy year, I bet. 😊
Jordana Vargas I agree I would love to know as well!
In every video you post, I find myself trying to read the titles of all the books behind you. I wish you did a book tour video, hahaha.
Ana Somo omg same hahaha 😂
Hahaha im the same too!
I'll try to do it next year!
Yes, please do!
Same!
Thanks again for your great series!
thanks for the rec! Glad you are enjoying my videos! xoxo
You have such a calming air about you, and so when I do find myself gnashing my teeth over yet another palette I am not going to buy, I breathe deeply three times, watch you and I feel calmer and more in control (and richer) - thank you xx
Another great video. The constant consumption we see on UA-cam is toxic. So refreshing to see someone who has an attitude of gratefulness.
I'd love to hear more about your non-beauty products shopping habits, has your mindset changed about clothes, books, etc as well?
more videos should be out through Dec/Jan about the other categories!
I've been watching your videos for a while, and I must say that you have the most beautiful eye looks. It seems lately that tutorials are out of fashion, but if you make one video someday, that would be lovely. Thank you for all the inspiration! I'll be starting a no buy, low buy next year
thank you! I have done a few this year and I'm hoping to do more next year.
Omg I love house plants too. Unfortunatly our cat loves to dig them up haha! XD
Sadie has been trying to EAT ONE OF THE CACTI lately!!!
Haha well she is stubborn, I'll give her that XD
my grandma's cat goes outside to do her business (or so grandma hopes) but then the cat goes back in the house and goes potty in one of the big plant pots when grandma isn't looking haha
A friend if mine had a similar problem with her cats. She ended up placing a layer of pinecones over the surface of the potting soil. Worked like a charm. Cheers from Idaho!
Angelica Nyqvist I love house plants also!
I use NYX control freak and the other day a friend asked me if I used the blood of scarified virgins to keep my eyebrows up that way so that might be helpful for you.
EmilyNoel just recommended this one in her Emily Awards as the strongest holding gel.
Yes! I love this brow gel! And for me it lasts forever. Love it!
I cannot get this one to work for me. I have extremely curly and unruly brows and this does actual nothing. I was so bummed after hearing such good things.
This one doesn’t work for me with truly unruly brows. I’ve also tried the Anastasia one. Still haven’t found one that works but I haven’t tried the one she has.
thanks for the rec! If it doesn't work I'll try the blood of sacrificed virgins.
By the fireplace is my all time favorite winter scent. It’s such a pleasure!
soooo nice!
I keep a list on my phone of items that peak my interest, and when I look back at older entries, I usually have forgotten about them and the lust for them is gone. Go figure 😂.
it's so eye-opening to do this!
The Anastasia pencils usually go on sale for 1/2 price twice a year at ULTA during their 21 days of beauty sale... just in case you don’t find your perfect color in a drugstore brand. Also, I love the NYX control freak eyebrow gel. It has excellent hold and staying power.
good to know! thank you!
I think it’s wonderful how your thought process and relationship to buying things has progressed throughout your no buy. You have put a lot of thought into why you still might want something or might not, and to not have a sense of urgency to buy something the minute your no buy is up is growth and change.
thank you, Lisa! So much has changed!
To get cat hair off my clothes I use those rubber gloves normal people use to do the dishes. It works fabulously!!
ooh, I've never heard of this! Amazing tip!
Your shirt will come out hairless, minus any wrinkles (I use this tip to "iron" clothes I don't want to iron), and the dryer sheet will make it anti-static and impart a nice scent.
thanks for the dryer tip! Lovely!
Thank you for making videos 💜
thank you for watching!
Try the NYX micro brow pencil & control freak clear gel!
thanks! I'll check them out!
2nd
I’m so happy for you, and your channel’s growth, Hannah! Not just because you’re growing subs, but because your influence is spreading and changing others. I’m loving the extra content too btw 😁
thank you, Jess! It's been an exciting couple of months, and a bit overwhelming!
I'm glad I found you a few weeks ago, it could be a sign that I shoul go for a no-buy next year :P also, the fact that you still manage to put out a lot of videos is so inspiring; I wonder what would many of the big youtubers do if the weren't able to get new products all the time...
I have more ideas than I can even keep up with!
You’re so calming & interesting.
aw, thanks!
I’m not going to lie the anticipation of knowing what your intro will be starting January 1st is killing me 😂😂 Also I love these kind of videos! 😊
:)
Amy Loves Makeup I’m guessing decluttering and organizing
Great video, very interesting. I always say if you keep something on a wish list for at least a month or so, you can avoid a lot of the hype/impulse emotion and buy with a clear head.
100% true!
I highly recommend Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon, as winter perfume. There’s also a rollerball at Sephora, I hope you smell it before you commit to the Replica one, I think you’ll really like it.
I've had a sample of that before too, you are right, it's right up my alley!
Elf, loreal, and NYX all have pretty comparable ultra skinny brow pencils (with varying shade ranges), but if you can find a shade in it I'd suggest the elf one on merit of I have the easiest time with it and it's the cheapest of the three!
Sublime Lemon I use the ELF one too and like it a lot :)
thanks for the info!
Seeing how beautiful your hair looks has inspired me to grow my natural hair colour back out again! I haven't seen it since I was 16 haha
I just found you and I love your channel. Your frankness and honestly is so refreshing. 🤗🤗🤗
thank you!
Loved this video! Please film your depotting process, that would be great to see! Congrats on the new subscribers you gained the past couple of days :)
Thanks, Lucia! I'll try to film it!
I used to swear by the brow wiz, but the NYX micro brow pencil is WONDERFUL, the shade range has great ashy tones and the formula works just as well as the brow wiz. You should definitely try it out!
thank you!
NYX Control Freak Eyebrow Gel is AWESOME. My brows are super stubborn and that gel works like a dream!
thanks!
How fun to hear what you're eyeing :)
I can't believe how fast my January budget has gone! Lots of things waiting for February, LOL
You realy did fantastic Hannah, and I loved to see the differences in thinking, your Total mindset, all that you shared with us last year, and I think that I am not the only one who learned so much last year, but I think that most subscribers did.You realy did a fantastic job, filming everything, and taking us along with you on your journey.I can’t thank you enough, because without your films and your learning phases, and your peptalk, and your fantastic responses,I don’t know if I could make this year of my no buy without your fully support and help, and your possitivity.I am so gratefull for everything you did last year.Hannah, you are a fantastic person,I love each film of you,I love your calmness in your voice,I hope that comming year Will be even more fantastic,Hannah I love you,a big virtual hug, wendy❤️
sending you a big hug back, Wendy! Thank you! xoxoxo
Cheers!
thank you so much, Kendra! xoxo!
Angela Pennington yes! Love the Nyx micro brow.
yay, thanks Angela!
Angela Pennington I love the nyx brow enchilada. bH cosmetics has a good dupe too.
I have some of their magnetic pallets & they have held up well. The smaller size is great for travel, but the mirror is not the best.
Such a good little drugstore gem!
thanks for all of the recs!
it is so interesting to see how your wish list has changed.
I'm hoping to get some spreadsheets going next year!
Your makeup look today is extra harmonious with your tone and style
Thanks Sonia!
Great idea!!
shop my stash isn't gone, it's just going a long time between videos because I have so much else to film! But it will be back, don't worry :)
The Salt New York magnetic palette is amazing and the creator is one of my favorite people 💜
I love the look of that palette! It's on my radar.
Hannah, your no buy year has inspired me so much that I also started mine in July. I also stopped watching beauty and makeup channels and UA-camr! I am so glad that I came across your channel. Thank you ❤️
congratulations on your no-buy! xo!
the tarte magnetic palettes are fantastic! they're a little cheaper than z-palettes but BEAUTIFUL quality, super sturdy, large beautiful mirrors. highly recommended!
thanks!
UA-cam can definitely make it harder! I talked about this a bit in my "how to do a no-buy" video. xoxo!
Like just keep it with your other brushes and tools and wash it and just use it instead of the nyx one, like you would use a disposable or spare mascara wand if you were using yours on someone else?
great, thank you!
I don't know if you've given this a go but I absolutely love using soap in my brows. The best hold of any "eyebrow gel" I've ever used
thanks!
have you tried using hairspray with a clean spoolie for your brows? that's something I do when I really wanna keep them up, especially since I have trouble using up hairspray otherwise haha. ooh and soap brows are slightly less durable but give such a nice and fluffy look (wanted to give some tips on things you might already have since I loved the anastasia brow gel but refused to spend so much on it and love saving money where possible)
I tried it once and it didn't work out, maybe with a different hairspray?
It's almost half way through December, and my no-buy December is still going strong :) I agree with you on the idea of being able to spend money on one or two good quality (maybe a little pricey) things because you save up for it/them, and not just doing impulse purchase and not knowing what you're spending on.
yay, congratulations Queenie!
It sounded kinda gimmicky, but it's def a must!
awesome!
SUCH an interesting question, Eva!
FYI I just bought a small magnetic palette from Make Up For Ever from Sephora for 2 dollars (its misleading because it’s called xl on sephora...I was surprised 😐)
Rana E I scrolled down to find this suggestion. I like their magnetic palette too :)
good to know!
Those are great little palettes.
Your last message was much appreciated. xoxoxoxoxox
@@HannahLouisePoston Looking forward to it! 😘🎄
@@HannahLouisePoston P.S.: Just in case you didn't see Samantha R. talk about this awesome looking palette... Seems like a good fit for your aesthetic 😉 saltnewyork.com/
I wear By the Fireplace and I love it for a fall/winter scent. So alluring and unique!
thanks!
But I hope that you find a great one!
thanks!
It just dawned on me why people keep saying you are so eloquent- you remind me of my English teachers in school! Being a francophone, I have learnt English the way you speak it! (if I were, not ending your sentences with prepositions, etc.) :)
I love, love, love your channel. I thought I was a trend-setter wanting to do my own no-buy year!!! LOL
I will binge-watch your channel during the Holidays as I believe I have so much to learn from you.
Looking forward to see what your project for next year will be!
I wish I could set the trend of not ending sentences with prepositions!
most of my shopping list is "a comfy armchair", "a bright reading light", "lots of warm socks that withstand wear" so it never changes really
You hit the nail on the head when you explained how we think and lust about make up. It isn’t just about the make up at ALLLLLL. It’s completely this thought and fantasy in our head of what our life might be like if we just get the chance to use the product. In the end it’s always a bit disappointing when it doesn’t change our lives in some big way.
thanks, Alexia! xo!
In the brow wiz I use soft brown and for the dipbrow caramel for reference so I do put a little warmth in my brows.
yes, leaving things on a wishlist really reveals how fickle we are, I think!
Wow, 801 comments. So, not sure if Adept palettes have been mentioned but they have excellent magentic palettes. They also sell magentic stickers for non-magnetized pans. They do have a travel palette, but not 6 pan.
Love this series!
awesome! Thanks!
For brow gel you could try the got2b Glued spiking gel for hair
@Jananner I think it would dry up and harden if she did that
:)
love your channel
Try the Nyx control freak brow gel! I also love the nyx brow pencils, especially the skinny one!
Idk why, but I pegged you for an NYC girl, not LA.
That window perch is really neat though. I hope you give us an update on it when you buy it.
Soap & Glory Archery Sculpt & Set is the best setting gel I have used. Brows don’t budge without being crunchy. The pencil part is great, very realistic color.
woo hoo, thanks!
I forgot to mention the wallet! It's also on my list and my xmas wishlist. And I am planning to get some new $5 sunglasses too in downtown LA :)
Wishing for a color versus a specific product seems really healthy.
yes!!
I recommend NYX Control Freak for brow gel and the NXY Micro Brow Pencil.
thanks!
I saw that, it's gorgeous!
Because hey, I was only on a no buy for make up 🤦🏻♀️ I‘m truly a genius lol
I might add though that the jewelry at least has hold its value and I could probably sell it for more than I paid for it originally xD
Have you ever tried the soap brows method? I recently ran out of my clear boy brow and didn't want to buy another one immediately, so I've just been wetting a spoolie and rolling it around in some Dr. Bronner's bar soap, and it really is like glue. Super cost effective as well.
haven't tried it yet!
Are you still planning on purchasing a wallet next year?
Hope this is helpful!
thanks for the info about the warm undertone in the NYX pencils!
Have you tried hair spray for your brows? Just spray on a spoolie and comb through brows. Not sure if it would replace brow gel for you but worth a try. I personally prefer the look over brow gel. However, I do use the Essence Make Me Brow for the tint plus hold which saves time in the morning.
I tried it once and it didn't work quite right...and I didn't like the hairspray smell on my face. But maybe with a different product?
I've heard that the NYX Micro brow pencil is a dupe for the Anastasia one. I haven't tried the Anastasia pencil, but I use the NYX one and I love it! They have a good color selection, also many cool toned ones. The tip is really precise, and it's an automatic pencil (no need to sharpen). It's less than 10$. It's not too soft but not too hard, for my taste at least.
Thank you for your amazing and inspiring content! I really love your intellectual approach on beauty, this is what youtube has been missing before you! :) I'm excited to see what you will do next year!
thank you! I'm so glad you are enjoying my content! xoxo
:)
The ELF Timted Brow Gel has great hold. They also have a clear version. They have several versions so look for the one with the silver lid
thanks!
I love the colourpop brow boss pencils! I love the Anastasia brow gel and it lasts a long time for me. I also used to enjoy Mac clear brow gel
thanks!
Hannah I researched a bit for my own magnetic palette needs and found that the Sephora zpalette was made from kinda cheap cardboard material and much preferred Tarte ones which went on crazy sale during the holidays. They’re super pretty and durable and spacious. Just my 2 cents ☺️
thanks for the tip!!
ooh, thanks for the tip, Vicki!
For brow gel, I used to use NYX Control Freak before switching to only using a brow pencil. For sneakers, check out Allbirds! They're a little expensive but beautiful and the most comfortable walking shoes I've ever owned. I've had mine for over a year and they look great!
thanks, Avila!
