Hi, Hannah! You mentioned this was a difficult video to make. I’m sure you must get many troll comments, as most UA-camrs do. I just wanted to tell you how important your channel has been to me. There is so much shame involved with excessive shopping behavior. I felt so alone and like it was a personal failing that would never be fixed. Knowing that someone else has also experienced this and found a way to overcome it, has been so much comfort and inspiration to me. And I am on day 23 of my Hannah-inspired no-buy.

@SabMarCha you aren’t alone. You know it’s a problem when you rush home to intercept the mail when packages come, put things in the purse because a bag would be obvious, and feel like organizing everything takes up WAY too much of my life (and that’s an understatement).
I admire people who can use things up - I’m always trying new things because I haven’t found my holy grail concealer, etc. I never got into pallets until a maybe 2 years ago - I just bought whatever singles I needed from Bobbi Brown (expensive but last forever, and still have several). Once I started watching UA-cam and seeing videos with “older” OG pallets I felt like I was missing out - I didn’t go for the new ones, instead the ones that were in people’s all time favorite palettes. I justified that they lasted the test of time, even among so many new formulas - I HAD to buy them half off Ulta 21 days - I got several for HALF price, which justified me buying them even more. Problem is I won’t use them up in my lifetime - that’s a little upsetting. I don’t want to know how much I spent on makeup, skincare, clothes, shoes, purses, etc. that I never use. It sickens me actually. Hannah’s perspective has been very helpful to me - she’s had revelations I doubt I would have ever had on my own - it takes me forever to use one thing because I have so much, even skincare, and I know it goes bad eventually 😢

Talk about a slap across the face! THANK YOU for doing this video! It is exactly what I needed to put all of my beauty buying into perspective and a wake up call that I am throwing money away! It's so easy to spend $45 here and $39 there until you add it all up and realize how much you have spent for the year. I just took a look in my bathroom cabinets at all the bottles of stuff that I never use and want to cry at how much money I have wasted! This is a much appreciated reality check!

I always considered myself lucky to have clear skin, it was acne free and relatively well behaved. But at the beginning of the year I found your channel and to my surprise you were the first person I saw on youtube that was not caking on foundation. That made me wonder why I always had a foundation on even when I thought my skin looked good. Then I started to explore the ingredients and the steps that you talked about in your skincare and I am happy to report that just a few days ago I went to a friends wedding with my makeup only consisting of eye makeup and lipstick. I have also started using a concealer only under my eyes! The knowledge that you have imparted onto me about skincare and the confidence from seeing your own practice of not wearing foundation everyday is priceless. Thank you so much Hannah!

You inspire so much reflection for me, someone with a common addiction but wildly different habits. I can't imagine how much more people who are also battling with overspending habits must take from these videos. There is so much for any beauty lover to learn and take away from your content. Hannah, I think this video was really brave. I haven't tried to tally my skincare spending, although my problem is hoarding and buying back ups.
I feel lucky that I didn't allow myself to buy Sephora skincare, I just couldn't step over that price barrier, and then I got mad at Sephora over their piddly rewards program, and stopped shopping there altogether. Plus, I worked for a high end cosmetic company in my twenties, and seeing how they try to manipulate women was eye-opening. The employee training in high end hotels, with food and samples, the endless push to sell skincare because women have to continue buying it, creating a need, telling women that they "deserve the best and to take care of themselves"... It's very difficult to resist those messages. For me, it's also the thought that part of the exorbitant prices are the expensive bottles and jars, and all that marketing. I am now using a combination of Derma E, Paula's Choice, The Body Shop, and the Ordinary, and am very happy. For my face and hair oils I discovered the company From Nature With Love-awesome oils without an insane price tags.

I’m just curious, and this isn’t a judgemental comment, but have you visited a dermatologist to ask which skin care products are best for your particular skin type? I finally went to one and it was eye opening.....not only was I using a lot of useless, expensive products but also ones that were doing more harm than good. As someone who has struggled with mild blemishes most of my life, I was told to cleanse with simple fragrance free cleansers twice a day. Also, to use vitamin c, light moisturizer and sunblock in the AM and just a prescription topical gel (that fights acne and includes retinol) along with a HA5 rejuvenator (stronger moisturizer that plumps the skin) in the PM. He said retinol, vitamin C and sunblock are the only things that can really make any difference in the appearance of your skin. Other than Botox, of course 😂. I would suggest to anyone to start with a professional and go from there. I have wasted more money at Sephora trying to figure it out in my own and I never got the results I’m getting now. I no longer even buy skincare from Sephora as my thought is “if these brands are so incredible, why don’t dermatologists carry any of them?” I’ve spent less than half this year than what I used to.

Hey Hannah, I just want to tell you how amazingly helpful and inspiring your videos have been.
I've not been wearing much skincare or makeup over the past few years as I've been sick. In that time I also became cruelty-free and didn't want to purchase my old brands which test on animals, but didn't have the time and energy to research new ones. I've aged more in the past year, I suspect partly due to being sick and partly due to not continuing my previous skincare regimen.
Your videos are helping me learn what I need to add into my skincare, what is worth spending money on, and also offering help and motivation to be sensible about these choices.
In particular, the videos where you've explained how long different items last have allowed me to work out how much I'm willing to spend on these items.
I now know that foundation lasts a long time and is worth the money. I know that eye shadows last a VERY long time, but also I realised that I only really need probably 4-5 good palettes. I have one in my collection that I was gifted over 10 years ago and it's still a staple for me now. Additionally, your videos have shown which palettes really are the best based on which you keep when you declutter. I learned which items are used up quickly and therefore I've decided I won't spend as much money on them. I ALSO learned about skincare, and got a basic idea of what products might be worth trying (and I'm going to order from the ordinary so I'm not way overspending).
I would be interested in watching a series where you go through your current items and tell us which ones you would purchase now, if you didn't have them (but still had the rest of your collection). It'd also be interesting to watch a video (perhaps once you're not in a no-buy) where you explain what items you'd buy if you were rebuilding a very minimal collection from scratch. If something happened and you lost all your skincare and makeup, which would you repurchase?
As well as being very informative you also come across as very down to earth and you're not overly loud (unlike a lot of youtube beauty videos, imo). It's very easy and relaxing to sit and listen to you explain your thoughts on a subject. Your content is very enjoyable :)
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I look forward to watching more of your videos!

Have you considered using a stronger vitamin A derivative to retinol? Over the counter adapalene (differin) is $15 at the drugstore or a dermatologist can prescribe the stronger versions. Differin singlehandedly took care of my acne and evened out my skin tone. It is potent stuff and may be able to replace your expensive acids and retinol. Also I believe salicylic acid and retinol cancel each other out when used in conjunction. Great video!

It's actually a myth that salicylic acid and vitamin A products cancel each other out - studies have shown that they can actually act together to improve exfoliation. However, a lot of derms do not recommend using them together because they can increase skin irritation, and together they can definitely make you more susceptible to sun damage if you're not protecting yourself well with a sunscreen.

It's in the first line of this research paper that they have a synergistic effect together: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4633208/
This article describes the combined usage of vit. A derivatives with salicylic acid peels to improve acne, and peels involve a much, much higher percentage of salicylic acid than over the counter preparations: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27050699
To my knowledge there are no direct studies that exist that look at the combination of the two directly in a regimen for acne, so as far as that goes, we're at a standstill - neither of us has the evidence to make a direct claim. I'm also a physician (though not a dermatologist) and I'm comfortable with the research that I've done that they don't "block the action" of each other, which doesn't make sense if you think about their mechanism anyway. Like I said, the reluctance to use them together is the thought that the combination of the two can increase skin irritation, especially in people not used to acids. This is also consistent with the information I was taught in medical school. Irritation itself could potentially lead to triggering acne, and thus create a "canceling out" effect for those people - but this has nothing to do with their mechanism of action, other than the fact that they are both exfoliators that often cause irritation in novice users. I will say I've been using a combination of both for years under the supervision of my own dermatologist, and it has worked beautifully. Have a nice day!

I really like that you replaced a lot of your products with less expensive products. I know this video is old, but I love how your no buy really got you thinking about money. I have cut down so much on personal care products in the last year, but I have a long ways to go.

This channel is so necessary. I haven’t been spending nearly as much as yourself and no where near the beauty reviewers/micro influencers I follow. But the constant stream of content has definitely changed my buying behaviour. I’ve been that broke student spending waaaaaaay too much money on a pair jeans, trendy clothing and body/skincare. But once I was no longer under employed I have definitely been influenced to purchase products out of my price range or that ended up not being happy with. So I’m glad your content is getting out there!

Great Video Hannah! You worked really hard on this and it was so informative. Your skin looks beautiful and seems to be adapting to the replacement products. I love finding a good lower priced product that will be as effective for the higher end ones. I was so surprised by the masking...sneaky how they never seem to be so expensive individually but add up to so much. I enjoy masking, can't usually tell if they do anything other than feel nice. Don't be hard on yourself...you are figuring out this stuff at a fairly young age. I am almost 50 and how you felt when you added it up was like how I felt when I did an actual "inventory" and started keeping track of my spending on makeup and skincare only few years ago. I had more of a problem with purchasing new items before I ever finished what I already had than the actual items I was using, but I let it go on like that for so many years. xo

Hannah, you realy did a fantastic job to change your skincare routine, and still having the important skincare for you found in other cheaper products,so that your skin still gets the important ingredients. What a shock when you calculate the costs per year before your no buy,and what you use now.You realy save a lot of money a year.Your no buy realy did a fantastic thing for you,and your skin looks as great now as when you started your no buy. This realy deserve a huge compliment.Your mindset has realy done a great job,and I understand that changing so much in your skincare routine and the search to products which still have the same ingredients, would be realy time consuming, also to try and compare the results when you changed your products. You learned so many huge steps past year.I already used cheap skincare products, before I started my no buy,but I have also a few ingredients that I find important to my skincare,so my moisturizers, and cleansing products were already cheap. And I love using oils in my skincare, like vitamine e oil, almond oil,tee tree oil, baob oil,and sometimes coconut oil, jojoba oil. Before my no buy I always bought my oils in a nature store, since my no buy I buy these oils in the drugstore for 25%,of the price in the nature store. The working is the same, and also the ingredients,I have no one skinoils extra, which have a combination from a few other oils where my skin reacts perfect on.I use my oils for my hair and face, and I like to switch oils, and sometimes I Will try a new one,all my oils costs me $3,each,so with this price I can switch between oils.I use vitamine e oil and almond oil,on a daily base, morning and evening.I use those oils now for 2 years and I see a huge improvement with my skin, and my skin loves it when I massage my oils in,and then I Will wait about 30 minutes before I put my make-up on,so that my oils realy have the time to sink in.Sometimes I use instead of a face primer, aloe Vera gel,and that works great.I noticed that my skin and hair reacts very good on natural products,I also use aloe Vera in my hair as a gel,to give more volume, and more curls and it won’t get hard, and it’s healthy for your hair,it also prevents heat burn on skin and hair.I also use it as a pre shampoo, because it’s healthy for your scalp and hair,I let it sink in for about 20-30 minutes, and after washing it I notice that my hair is more shiny. For me aloe Vera is a product that almost costs nothing it’s so very cheap, and it has so many multiple uses,it even helps again sun burn, for me that’s a product that I can’t miss and I use it multiple times a day.I use a jar in a month, and my aloe Vera gel is 96% pure. But I am so proud at you about your changes you Made with your skincare, and finding very good alternatives, which have the same ingredients, and are so much cheaper, and your skin reacts so well on these new products. You have grown in so many different ways last year, and that Will effect you in the rest of your live, all the things you learned, and grown as a person,I hope that many people Will experience the same who does a no buy with all their heart, xoxo wendy

I LOVE Gothamista! I have watched Dr. Dray, Dr. Sam Bunting, and Caroline Hirons, but Rene is still my fav. Buying my skincare mostly from her recommendations, and almost only on sale, has helped (hello gothamista box on wishtrend!). I'm "new" to skin care, in that as a teen i would rarely use a cleanser/wear makeup/have a routine. i had bad experiences with drugstore products, which have left me wary. In my late 20s I decide to dip my toes back in with k-beauty and have learned so much, but there is lots left for me to learn. I think part of the reason products last me so long (purchase 1-2x/year) is because I am a bit inconsistent. Maybe if i was more consistent I would have skin like yours!

Hi again Hannah. I just need to tell you what an amazing inspiration you are for me. I'm doing a no buy for 2019 and am so grateful to have your year of experience to guide me. This video in particular hit home for me. Every single word you said could have been coming out of my mouth. I cannot thank you enough and I'm so excited to see how 2020 plays out for you. I know this might sound weird, but I'm a little scared for you, but probably because I'm a lot scared for myself for next January. I compare my shopping addiction to food. I'm always putting on and taking off 10 pounds, because I can never seem to maintain - it's all or nothing, feast or famine, and I actually think doing a no-buy is easier for me than a low buy because of my addictive personality. I can not shop, but shopping a little bit - that scares me. So I'm eagerly following along to see how this year goes for you and cheering for you all the way cause if you can do it, so can I! But no pressure lol. ;-)

I’d super suggest replacing the cerave night cream with the 16 oz tub of CeraVe cream. It’s 12 dollars at Walmart, and last me (a person with sensitive, dry, acne prone skin) about 6 months of more than liberal use. It’s made my skin go from extremely blemish prone and red, to having nearly no zits. I’d also seriously recommend La Roche Posay, which has this Glycolic and Salicylic Acid toner that was a serious game changer for my skin.

Thank you for this video! You honesty and transparency is really appreciated. I know the struggle, as someone who still has adult acne, and has had acne for the last 10 years on and off. The effect of bad skin on my mental health is real, and I constantly need to remind myself of the balance between clear skin and my savings account. I'm currently rocking a pretty minimalistic skincare routine, after teaching myself the "replacement only no buy" mindset of actually using up what I have. Before, I would run out and get the next new thing and just leave a half empty bottle of something. I'm using my last half empty moisturizer now, and look forward to being able to use the one I've been researching for a while.
I'm impressed by your progress and changed mindset. Hope you have a healthy, balanced 2019.

I found really brave of you to share all your feelings in this video, more than anything else!!! I'm not into skincare as much as you are, I'm more into makeup than skincare (the opposite from you), but I can really understand how you feel. I don't really know how much I spend or spent with makeup, but the few times I tried to calculate it, I came up with an estimated value so high that I actually do'nt want to know how much it is. So you go so deep into the numbers, it is very incredible! It takes courage. And I also get the shame. It's easy to feel that way, specially around people that don't like much makeup and look at us, makeup lovers, as if we were aliens and completely irracional people.

This was a brilliant video and I especially enjoyed the comment at the end about investing in your face now but not at the cost of mortgaging your future. Too often we tend to make impulse purchases without really understanding the motivation, or realizing that there will be consequences, positive or negative, for all the choices we make. I have thoroughly enjoyed the videos in this series, you should be very proud for the work you have done and for being honest on a platform in a way where this type of transparency is mostly absent and kept behind closed doors. Oh yikes, this is way too relatable for me. Based on the ingredients you listed and products you mentioned, I suspect we watch/read a lot of the same stuff. I have the exact same relationship with Good Genes. I have the same bottle as you; it has lasted me since March and is nowhere near empty. That said, for all the same reasons you mentioned, I will not repurchase it.
On moisturizers, I have gone from La Mer to Liquid Gold to finally just CeraVe classic moisturizing cream. My skin is dry and all I need is a thick occlusive with humectants, and the ceramides are a bonus. Part of the problem with expensive skincare for me was that I would use only a little, to try to make it last as long as possible, while things like moisturizer and sunscreen really should be applied liberally and frequently. CeraVe's price point has actually taught me to apply the product more efficaciously, if that makes sense. It's a psychological thing, and I think probably not unique to me.
I'm really curious how you feel about the advice on Dr. Dray's channel. I suspect you have come across her videos, and while your skincare philosophies are different, you'll agree on much of the important stuff.

Watching some of your older videos, as a new subscriber. Every time you blink in this video I am entranced!! That color! I am so glad that it reminded me of a favorite pigment I already have in my collection. Perhaps I will wear it tonight on the town... 🌆
Our skin histories are similar, but we have had very different approaches to products. I also grew up with chronic acne - for me, diet was the first big change, but then introducing sunscreen really showed me how good my skin could *really* look. For me, my big early expenses were with dermatologists who barely understood my skin and threw heavy retinoids and antibiotics at it. Then several years of expensive trial-and-error finding which products were both effective and wouldn't break me out 😓 I am finally at a place where I am happy with my basic skincare cycle, perhaps trying the odd extra hydrator or new sunscreen. It's a journey, for sure.

Awesome video (yes I watched all the way through!) I came to the same conclusion about Good Genes, and all actives that I put on my skin for that matter. I switched to using Good Genes once a week rather than daily. I also stopped using an acid toner (the glycolic toner from the Ordinary). And now I use DE Sukari baby facial once every two weeks rather than once a week. These changes have made a huge difference in my skin and I haven’t had a breakout for months. I think I was causing more damage the more products I piled on.
Thanks for outlining the effect of your changes on your budget. Good skin doesn’t have to damage our wallets!

I was going to mention Timeless Skincare, too. They make their vitamin C (L ascorbic + E + ferulic acid) fresh to order and have excellent shipping. They also have several other types of serums (including pure hyaluronic acid) at very low cost. I first learned about/started using them in 2017 from UA-camr Angie/Hot&Flashy. And of course Dr. Dray. ☺️

I'd be careful with the TImeless Skincare's version of the vitamin C, E and Ferulic acid, as it contains alcohol. Benzyl alcohol, to be exact, which may be ok for oily skin types, but for my skin, no way.

Hannah, have you heard of Dr. Dray? She is a dermatologist with a UA-cam channel. She walks thru different stores and reads the ingredients on different skin care products looking for the most affordable options that pack the most punch . She is a gem! She just came out with a favorites of 2018 video. I think you would love her..if you don't already.

I just bought a Jordan Samuel set for Christmas that includes Étoile with retinol, I'm so excited to try it. I too love skincare, have an acne history, and have very expensive tastes on a teeny budget. Thank goodness for indie brands like Jordan Samuel, Stratia, Stark Skincare, and Korean skincare that are available online. Paula's Choice is also great. Loved this video, Hannah! 💜

I literally JUST watched your vib rouge video and was getting so much anxiety as you rattled everything off. Your progress in this video is amazing and pretty inspiring!
I too always had bad acne (and still do, though I now have nice skin with acne instead of bad skin) and it's amazing how much I always felt I had to spend in order to do something about it. In reality, now I am just cleansing and topping off with a PC moisturizer and my skin isn't any worse off for it.
I'm not doing a no buy next year, but I do really need to re-jumpstart my minimalism journey! I'll def being going back through your other videos for insight!
    xo

This video was inspiring for me, thank you for making it. I did Reverse Rouge this year and used up about $1,200 worth of products-- nearly all of it skincare. I know I have to do an overhaul of my skincare routine but I've been reluctant because I finally got my sensitive, acne-prone skin to a decent place. But if you can do it, so can I!

Thank you so much for all of this information!!! I love how you broke down the cost per year. I hate hearing that you have gotten ugly comments!!! Especially when all you are doing is informing others and being brutally honest. Keep up the great work. I really need to do a no buy myself!!!

Thank you for being so brave as to make this video. It's amazing you were able to find products you like just as well as the high priced skincare you were used to. I kept thinking what a relief it will be to you to have that extra money available to pay for important purchases or to build up your savings. Have a wonderful holiday!

Yes! This video was exactly what I needed as I spent the morning going through all of my makeup and skin care, making an inventory in preparation for my no-buy year. Your entire process over the last year, in terms of just discovering and curating your own skincare routine and makeup collection has been so enlightening and inspiring. I'm so very glad you decided to document your year on youtube, and I can't wait to see the content you come up with next year! Also, the Etoile from Jordan Samuel is really, really good. It's definitely a slow burn product, if that makes sense, but I adore it.

Such great info! I dropped the Drunk Elephant C serum and a Sunday Riley rose oil (Flora) I was using in my morning routine. I replaced both with the Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil 1 oz/ 30 mL for daytime use. I love it, and love that this replaces both for me. 😊

I am so glad I found your channel. It is eye opening and inspiring. I’m working on my no buy rules for 2019 now, so looking forward to how it hopefully helps reshape my idea of “value”. Not just in the beauty products I buy, but other parts of my life.

I really appreciate the self-relection in your no buy year videos. It is really difficult to be that honest with yourself and incredibly brave to do it all publicly.
P.S. I loooooooove the Etoile with Retinol oil. All the benefits of reitnol, but very gentle.

This was super interesting. I've always dealt with acne so I understand the obsession with skincare. Over the summer I saw a dermatologist at my University who finally helped me with prescription 0.05% Tretinoin cream that I use in conjunction with 10% benzoyl peroxide. All the other dermatologists I saw pushed OTC products they were most likely paid to promote. Ugh. The result: I haven't had a pimple in almost two months. My skin hasn't been this clear since I was like 12 lol. I wanted to share this in case it helps anyone. Some dermatologists are FAR more helpful than others. Best of luck and remember you're beautiful and valuable no matter what your skin looks like ❤️

Hannah, I couldn’t tell by glancing at your list of products, but do you use a BHA? The way you describe your relationship with good jeans is how I would describe my relationship with Paula’s choice BHA liquid. I pour a few drops directly into my hands (if you use a cotton pad, it just absorbs the product) and then apply it on my face once a day. It’s about 30 dollars a bottle and it lasts me several months. I’m 36, so a few years older than you are, and while I use peptides, niacinamide, and vitamin C, it is the single most powerful thing I do to even and brighten my skin tone. I just wanted to share in case it might be helpful! 💗

I keep meaning to mention this on your earlier videos but thank you thank you thank you for openly talking about money and personal finances and the reality of getting sucked into (and trying to keep up with) all this beauty consumerism. I think this is very relevant on the topic of skincare since it is so often marked to us as an "investment" that we just have to go along and buy and stick with it and we will see the results in the long haul as oppose to almost any make up product where you can almost tell on a first use (or with a sample) whether it will work. For example it kind of grosses me out that a cleanser needs to be "luxurious" haha it's just getting put on our skin for 30 seconds and then going down the drain! I've gotten my skincare done to almost being exclusively drugstore with 3 exceptions that I haven't been able to replace but I'm constantly on the hunt every time I run out of them.

For sheet mask stuff, unless you specifically want to get the little skincare bonus from the sheet masks themselves...
If you care solely about the physical aspect, I suggest looking into purchasing a reusable sheet mask cover! You can find them for like $5 online, and they're made to help the serum of sheet masks really adhere and sink into your skin, which should work the same way for your skincare! Theoretically, unless it gets funky over time or something, it would be essentially a permanent product that fills that physical purpose you use sheet masks for, and cut out that spending entirely besides the one time purchase!
